Kicks 101.5 shifted its music mix significantly on Friday, salting in more songs from 1991 to 2005 and cutting back on newer cuts.
This means artists that hadn’t gotten much love from Kicks in years (e.g. Garth Brooks, Patty Loveless, Jo Dee Messina, Travis Tritt) are back in rotation. Miss Randy Travis’ “Forever and Ever, Amen”? It’s back!
On Thursday, Kicks played 67% songs that were two years older or newer. By Friday, that percentage had fallen to 37%, according to data from Mediabase 24/7. The average age of a song on Kicks increased five years, from 3.5 years old to 8.5 years old.
Kicks now sounds closer to what Eagle 106.7 was before it died in early 2008.
This is the first major shift in Kicks’ music mix in at least a decade. It has been the market’s No. 1 country station for more than 15 years. From my memory, it has emphasized new music at least since ABC, which owned Kicks at one time, purchased Y106 (later dubbed Eagle) and differentiated the two station’s music by making Kicks focused on currents. Since 94.9/The Bull debuted in late 2006, Kicks and the Bull have gone toe to toe with a similar emphasis on a current blend.
Ratings for Kicks took a bit of a nosedive this summer, though its most direct rival 94.9/The Bull didn’t appear to benefit. The station was tied for fifth in April both overall and 25-54. By September, it was tenth in both categories and its 3.8 share overall was one of its worst showings since people meters were installed in early 2009.
Kicks was recently acquired, along with the rest of Citadel Broadcasting, by Atlanta-based Cumulus Media last month. New management obviously has a new strategy for Kicks. Budget cuts have already been made, resulting in the the departure of Kicks afternoon host Tim Michaels. Music director Mike Macho has taken over that shift.
This change will likely skew Kicks’ audience older. The Bull has generally done better with younger listeners but has generally lagged behind Kicks across the board this year.
See what happened in one day. Here’s a typical hour on the day before the change:

Buy a clue. When Eagle 106.7 was on the air, their format was classic country. They had dreadful ratings. If Kicks wants better numbers… they need an air-staff with less tude.

Mark I know you have both Zack Brown CD’s please play them non stop at the same time to ease the pain of reading my opinion. He is played too much for my taste and he will have just as much money if I change the station when he comes on.

If you really want a mix of country music (50’s thru today), and live in northern GA, western SC, or eastern NC, listen to WCON 99.3 FM in Cornelia. Also some Gospel music thrown in at specific times.

I never liked country that much until the past few years, so I will probably mostly stick to 94.9 since I like the more contemporary songs. I like the folks on 94.9 better anyway, especially Jason and Kristen in the morning. It would be good to hear more Randy Travis though!

Good move. Only so much of that talentless hack Taylor Swift one can take. As for the comment on Zac Brown, uh yeah, that band is actually one of the brightest spots about today’s country.
I can’t believe I am saying this but smart move by Cumulus here. Atlanta needed a mixed country format after what – sadly – happened to Rhubarb and Eagle back in 2008. Keep this playlist, but continue to play new stuff, just not overkill it and you will be fine. Might I suggest a 90s Saturday and country gold Sunday playlist with limited commercials. Also as long as they keep Dallas on the air then I am a happy camper.

Wow, who would have thought this many country fans ACTUALLY have computers, And know how to use them….. I’m stunned.

Good move by Kicks to differentiate. The only difference between 94.9 and 101.5 in the 3 years I’ve lived here has been the DJs. I’ll definitely be listening to 101.5 more often now!

please, enough with the dixie chicks. who cares what they said or didn’t say, they’re just not relevant anymore, period. but on a postiive note, i hope 94.9 the bull will take notice and step up to the plate. i don’t know what has happened to their ratings of late, but they don’t sound nearly as good as they did only about a year or two ago when they were peaking.

THANK GOD! if they elimate Rascal Flatts, and other Poppy “Country” bands it would be awesome. More Hank, Willie, Cash, Waylon, Alan, George (Strait and Jones), Garth, Merle, Jamie Johnson would be just fine with me! Just becasue you have a fiddle or banjo in the band doesn’t make you country. I might actually listen to the radio now!

South107 has been playing the older stuff for awhile. Just because your a bigger station doesn’t mean your better.

Too many older songs – they should play more new than old!
