For fans of the AJC  “American Idol” blog, the content has migrated here.

There is also a dedicated page for “Idol” fans here. As I’ve already done this week, I’ll be tracking “X Factor” as well.

And for folks who normally read this blog and have no interest in “Idol” or “X Factor,” no worries. My coverage of other radio and TV-related topics will continue unabated.

I leave tomorrow! Anyway, X Factor ratings held at 12.5 million on Thursday, identical to Wednesday. According to the New York Times, expectations from Fox and even rivals was in the neighborhood of 20 million, which is what I figured, too. So “X Factor” is not even close to meeting the hype. And sadly, the product has not lived up to the hype at all. It hasn’t even reached the 18-49 demo numbers of “The Voice,” which I think clearly sucked a lot of the wind from “X Factor’s” sails. The show does not add much to the equation so far and while I like L.A. Reid, an upgrade from Randy Jackson, Nicole is superfluous and the host Steve Jones has been a void of personality. And like I have said before, they are letting bad singers suck it on stage for way too long and giving us a surfeit of actual talent. I’m disappointed and not actually upset I’ll be missing next week. I am curious about boot camp. Have fun talking about that. Question: should I create blog entries in advance for you to talk about the show? I can!

Deirdre

If you want to create new entries, Rodney, go ahead. Maybe a fresh thread every 3 or 4 days will help. You’ve spoiled us! However, if you’re swamped with packing and last minute details, then we will find a way to manage. Have fun! And don’t let Helen wear blonde wig! ;-)

Oh and I totally agree with you on X-Factor. It comes across as stale, almost old-fashioned. Maybe that will change when “boot camp” starts but really, isn’t that just Hollywood with more interference from the judges?

Morning!

As most of you know by now, Rodney is on vacation. two more new threads will be posted for the Idol X portion of this blog. A few will also be posted in the Radio & TV section. My understanding is that comments are closed in the R & TV section because he is not there to moderate. Comments are open here because we do have a moderator. Deirdre sheepishly raises her hand While this is a good thing, I also foresee problems with others having nothing better to do than to be annoying. However, I hope we take the high road and encourage new folks to join in.

Good morning! Sorry to leave you all alone, Deirdre! I just got into my office. The entire University campus was without power when I arrived for work at 7:30 AM, but was gradually coming on, little by little an hour later. I just got my computer turned on, so I am late arriving.

I have a class tonight but will be home by 7:30 or so. What time does Terra Nova come on? Is DWTS on at the same time? I know Nana watches DWTS religiously, but don’t know if she will be willing to do a review. Where is Mercedes? She’d probably write a wonderful review. If no one else volunteers, I will watch TN and try to write my impressions.

Deirdre, I was a bit disappointed in Pan Am. I was expecting a higher grade show–something like Mad Men in the air. A higher quality dialogue and story line. I thought the flying stuff was pretty accurate and interesting–the airport, the planes, the uniforms, the perception of the women. And, yes, I agree they were treated with lots of respect by the writers–probably a lot more than they actually got “in the day.”

Sam-A

Not watching TN, since I can’t figure out why they’d have to go back multiple millions of years to “correct mistakes to save the current world”. That seems a stupid premise for me. My only set show tonight is “Castle” which I love after discovering it last season (sadly missed the first one). Usually flip back and forth betw the “Bev Hills H-wives” (the ONLY one other than NY I watch – no NJ and ATL trash for me – just like to peek in at the mansions and jewels of actual rich people, not pretends like NJ and ATL) and DWTS.

Deirdre

Harriett, I agree. I’m one of the few who is not a fan of Mad Men but I thought the flying scenes were well done. Lot’s of opportunity for stories with new passengers every week. I’d hate to think that it could turn into a new version of the Love Boat however. Christina Ricci didn’t have much of a story but maybe, since she’s the only well known cast member, they think we’d be willing to wait for it.

Morning!

Terra Nova started by reminding me of the excellent sci-fi film Blade Runner and then morphed into Jurassic Park Meets Lost. This show was a winner, imo. Interesting characters, interesting premise, action involving both dinosaurs and “bad guys” I put the bad guys in quotes because I’m not all that sure that they are bad. Teens, adults, children, authority figures, experts in various fields fills out the cast promising a wide variety of stories to tell.

The premise involves our world’s eco system failing and the bunch of people who are either recruited for their skills or lucky enough to win the lottery who inhabit the new old world in a settlement called Terra Nova. It actually works pretty well. Yes, it’s better than that Saturday morning show.

Deirdre

Sam, that’s where the “portal”(discovered some10 years earlier) took them. It wasn’t a choice, they had no alternative. And the idea was more to escape the collapse of the world than to rebuild it better. The leadership at Terra Nova hopes to not make the same mistakes but…as explained…they are on a dfferent “time thread” and can’t have any effect on the future.

I think that war was just listed as one of the many ways that humans failed the planet…not necessarily as a major contributing factor. Lang’s character is, first and foremost, a soldier. Isn’t it amazing how we revere soldiers in real life but turn them into villains in fictional works? Why is that?

Harriett

September 27th, 2011

I think it is because they are often portrayed as one-dimensional, with violence an easy solution to problems. Not right, but often true, IMO.

I don’t think we’re in the middle of a 1950’s western with Terra Nova. There are no white hats and black hats(with the possible exception of the lead family) I’m pretty sure we’re going to start understanding both sides in the “sixers” battle with Terra Nova.

The “Slashers” attack on the teens was really well done, I thought.

Hi y’all,

I checked out Terra Nova…it was interesting for the first hour…I’m not sure what happened, that my interest went down hill after the son went with the other teenagers exploring outside the gates. I agree that it felt like Jurassic Park meets LOST meets Avatar. I’ll probably try to catch the part I missed and check it out again next week.

I did finally watch Revenge…and I liked it. The pilot revealed quite a bit of background and the pacing was effective. I hope it can sustain it for the long run, but I realize we’ll probably slow down at some point as they only went 5 months prior to the present time.

In other stuff, the Braves are killing me! I was perfectly happy with having an 8.5 game wild card lead and could have done with this “exciting” end to the season.

Sam-A, you crack me up regarding Kelly. I do understand her constantly saying that she’s not gay, the problem with that is that people tend to take that as “she doth protest too much.” It’s been a big topic of conversation whenever she’s done promo the past 3 years. If she wants to know why people think that, I’d be more than happy to let her know. I joke around about Kelly, but I do think that she gets a bad deal as people tend to throw the “lesbian” word as some sort of accusation, even as somewhat of an insult. That’s the part I have a problem with… She’s a very pretty and awesome singer with a great personality. Who wouldn’t want her to “play for their team?” :) In all seriousness, I take her at face value. If she’s telling me she’s not, I’ll believe her.

Re the Braves…it’s the same Oct. nightmare we get every year. Used to be the Falcons could cheer us up but, not this year. I guess I’m just going to have to rely on Tech for my sports glory. So far….

Lot’s of inteesting things pop up in the second half of Terra Nova. Try it again but if it isn’t your thing, no biggie.

Sam-A

September 27th, 2011

K&CF: Agreed. Accusations of one’s sexuality are cruel, hateful and plain stupid. You are what you are, what you were born to be, and people who can’t understand/accept that are not worth anyone’s time dealing with. I do understand why some gays do not admit it, if it would cause trouble in their chosen profession (sadly) or destroy their families, but there are few things sadder (animal abuse and homelessness) than a parent who refuses to accept and support a gay child! I love Ellen’s mom so much – she radiates love for her daughter. I know if you were my daughter I would love and accept you and a partner you might love. It’d be harder for me to accept a child with tats and piercings all over his/her body! There, now you know my biggest prejudice!

Sam-A, beautifully said. I understand both sides, which is why I don’t agree with outing people. But I think eventually we reach a point where we have to be honest with ourselves and others. One of the best interviews about coming out I’ve heard was actually Ricky Martin. As far as tats and piercings…I guess I’m in better shape than Kelly who has about 10 tats now. I just have one! :)

Good Morning.

After the second week of DWTS, who will be leaving the Ballroom tonight? The answer will be revealed tonight. Hopefully, your favorite will be sticking around a little longer.

Hope Solo and pro partner, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, stated things off with a lively Jive that failed to make a good impression with the judges. Their score was a mere 19.

Next up was Kristin Cavallari and her partner, Mark Ballas, who performed the Quick Step as a Marilyn Monroe look-alike to Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend. The judges gave their a score 22.

David Arquette and Kym Johnson dance the Jive and really wasn’t good. Their score was 18.

Elisabetta Canalis and partner, Val Chmerkovskiy, who made his debut as a professional, did the Quick Step. IMO, she wasn;t that good and has a bad attitude, but the judges scored them a 21.

Rob Kardashian and partner, Cheryl Burke (a 3time champion on the show) danced a very good executed Jive and received the first staning “O” of the night. Judges score was 21.

Carson Kressley and his partner, Anna Trebunskaya, failed on the Quick Step. He reminded me of watching Pee Wee Herman. Their score was only 18.

Ricki Lake and Derek Hough danced the best Jive of the night and received the 2nd staning “O”. Also, they received the highest score from the judges, a 23.

Chaz Bono and Lacey Schwimmer performed the Quick Step and this was painful to watch. Chaz had injured his knees and was in pain during the dance. However, he did get through it, but did receive the lowest score of 17.

Chynna Phillips and Tony Dovolani danced the Jive and it was very well done. The judges scored them a 21, dropping them from 1st place last week to a tie this week in 3rd.

Nancy Grace and partner, another new professional this year, Tristan MacManus, danced the Quick Step. They were an improvement from last week, earning a score last night of 21.

J.R. Martinez and partner, Karina Smiroff, ended the night with the Jive. The judges were impressed with J.R.’s abilityn to dance and gave them a score of 22. And, I will have to say, that I am pulling for J.R. to win the Mirror Ball.

My guess who will be going home is a toss up between Carson Kressley and Chaz Bono.

Not to give JT nightmares or anything but there are pictures on the internet that show Nancy Grace had a major wardrobe malfunction and ended the dance with one nipple peeking out of her dress. The camera guys caught it right away and stayed off her until it was remedied

OMG, I didn’t proof read before I hit the submit comment button on my review of DWTS. I apologize for the typos.

I watched Revenge last week and really do like the show. If any of you were fans of Sisters and Brothers, you will remember Emily VanCamp as Rebecca. Revenge is set in the Hamptons, has a good cast of characters and IMO, is well written. I will continue to watch each Wednesday.

Speaking of Chaz and DWTS, which I didn’t watch, saw some pictures of him without a shirt on and I have to say there is something wrong. No, I don’t mind seeing a guy with his shirt off… well ok I do, but I don’t have more of a problem seeing Chaz as opposed to any other guy with his shirt off. When you see the picture you can tell something is off. Off, that is actually a good choice of words for it.

As for Terra Nova, I don’t want to be drawn into it, but has anyone told them that time travel is not possible? It just doesn’t work. Now let me get back to watching Doctor Who, the season finale is coming out soon.

I watched the whole 2 hours of DWTS and yet, I failed to catch the Nancy Grace thing. if I had, it would have been in my review. This is not the first time this has happened on the show. The very first season it happened to Kelly Monacco while dancing and she had to hold her top up with her left hand. It has also happened to two of the pros, Cheryl and Karina. You would think that the wardrobe people would not push those girls to the limit so that there wouldn’t be a chance of them popping out. A lady can dance without her girls showing.

At any rate, Branch is back and glad to be home. Papa Loveless’ surgery went well. He is having a few issues post-op but the doctor believes he can straighten those out soon. We were going to stay longer but Papa ran us off. I’m checking on him daily and will go back at a moment’s notice if he needs me. As far as the Sing Off, it was pretty good last night. The groups from last week were much stronger. However, it seemed a bit down IMO. First of all, last year’s winner “Committed” performed a snippet. It was “Take 6” tight. I MUST purchase their cd.

Dartmouth Aires – They sang “Higher Ground”. Typical a capella group. All the harmonies and voices were in place from lower and mid baritones to the high tenors. They were full of energy and the lead singer was powerful.

Sonos – The performed “Wicked Game” by Chris Isaak. Interesting arrangement of the song, but their beat-box guy was off the charts. They’re usually used to working with electronic fills, but they did a decent job in covering. Although they lack the full harmonies of the other groups, the girls have that “Pia affect”. That may keep them around in the fan voting phase.

North Shore – They sang “Runaround Sue” by Dion. There’s nothing like an old fashioned doo wop group, that happens to be one of the best in the business. All of the harmonies were clean and the crowd really got into it.

G

September 27th, 2011
3:15 pm

Deltones – College group from University of Delaware that sang “Feels Like Home” by Randy Newman. Overall strong performance, but the lead started a bit shaky. Short skirts probably edged them over the highschool group Sol’d Out (eliminated).

The Collective – This group from Nashville performed “Rolling in the Deep” by Adele. The lead is solid and unique. She has a very “rich” voice (as Shawn mentioned). The group didn’t blow me over. They’re basically a group of lead singers from other groups, and they’ve formed their own group for the show. Meh?

Messiah’s Men (eliminated) – They performed “People Get Ready” by The Impressions. Not the most technical group, but the sound was strong and full of bass and baritone. It felt good, but they’re not strong enough for this type of competition.

Pentatonix – They sang “E.T.” by Katy Perry featuring Kanye West. Not much to say about this group other than the bass singer. Not low baritone, but real bass.

JTesla

September 27th, 2011
8:59 pm

You probably would. She almost got me roped into Terra Nova, there is a reason I was avoiding it. The father/son drama was enough to get me to walk away, but otherwise a very well done show.

So, how do they communicate with the future if the gateway is one-way? Did someone step through and go “oops I can’t get back” and everyone on the other side just decided that they weren’t disintegrated or warped into the middle of the planet or worse yet warped to a realm filled with Nancy Grace’s mommy bags?

Deirdre

September 27th, 2011
9:17 pm

Be careful, JT or I’ll post that picture again………it’s science fiction…suspension of disbelief and all that….and teen boys are notorious for father/son conflicts…believe me, I know! That was the most realistic part of the whole 2 hours!

Other than that, it was just good fun. Ask Mrs. JT.

JTesla

September 28th, 2011
12:28 am

Oh I liked it, my favorite TV show right now involves a time traveler in a small blue police box, so suspending my disbelief isn’t a problem.

The father son thing was just too cliché for me, I’ve seen that type of realistic too many times. For me it’s become akin to “framing”, where the main character is framed for something and they have to clear their name to friends and the world. Blech I will not watch any movie that I know involves that premise. I just hit a point where I decided that I’ve had my fill for life. No more for me thanks. So ‘angst riddled teen son rebelling against a dad who is really trying’… nope. That woudn’t force me to stop watching Terra Nova though, it is just that I don’t want to get sucked into a new series.

Deirdre

September 28th, 2011
7:02 am

Morning!

No angst ridden cliches for JT…sort of like no sad animal movies for me. We all have our standards.

I taped Glee last night but I fear I might not be watching it much longer. What started out as a clever show with great musical numbers has deteriorated quite a bit, imo.

Harriett

September 28th, 2011
7:58 am

Good morning!

I quite agree about Glee, Deirdre. It lost me midway through Season Two. It just was not the same show and began taking itself way to seriously. I loved the bitchy wife/student crush thing, and the tension with the pregnant girlfriend, unrequieted love thing. They could not sustain that, and I know it, but somehow something got lost along the way. I watched for fifteen minutes last night and then turned to something else.

I watched Unforgettable at 10. Meh.

Deirdre

September 28th, 2011
8:05 am

The creator of the show seems to want to turn it into a campaign for human rights. Not a bad thing at all but he’s so heavy-handed about it that the fun has gone away. Sue Sylvester, who started out as a funny adversary has turned into a monster, Kurt’s story, so warm and gentle, especially with his dad, now starts to grate on my nerves. His boyfriend is so talented but too perfect and all-knowing for a hs kid. And while the slushie attacks were funny and had a point in the first season, wouldn’t hs tormentors have moved on to some other torture by now?

Deirdre

September 28th, 2011
8:10 am

As far as the new and returning shows are concerned; The Walking Dead returns Oct 16th. Homeland, a new show that looks very interesting(with Damien Lewis and Claire Danes)begins Sunday on Showtime. And Hell On Wheels brings westerns back to tv and I WILL be watching it when it begins on AMC in Nov. Hubby has been hoping for a new western. He liked Deadwood a lot on HBO. I hope this one lives up to the promise.

Harriett

September 28th, 2011
8:11 am

Exactly, D! I was thinking about the Kurt story line too. The thing with his dad was heartwarming. I don’t believe the boyfriend as the hs kid either. And, I do not like the Sue character at all any longer.Sad, because I was definitely a Gleek the first year. Don’t care at all now.

TV Guide is also picking the hits and misses from the first week of new shows. So far, The Playboy Club is the only solid “miss”(who didn’t see that coming) X-Factor is listed as “Jury is still out”, with this quote:

9:19 am

I watched the Sarah Michelle Gellar Twin thing first show, but it didn’t excite me enough to return (and it runs against “What Not To Wear” which I’m addicted to). My sister said it’s gotten much better but so complicated that I would be totally lost to try and watch again. Tried to watch the one with the guy trying to prevent crimes before they happen, but after 20 mins I was bored and moved on. Not at all excited about “X Factor”, but will watch a couple more before I ditch it. I think that’s all the new shows I’ve watched. Just finished “Food Truck Race”, which I really like, and “Closer” which I adore. Looking fwd to (or already enjoying) new seasons for “Walking Dead”, “Amazing Race”, “Chuck”, “Hawaii 5-0″. I’m having the same DVR problems. Seems like a couple nights are jam packed with stuff, and my DVR only records 2 shows, and while I’m supposed to be able to watch a 3rd, it ain’t happenin’! And try to get info from Comcast – haha! I’ve called a hundred times trying to get help setting up PIP – and still don’t have it or a clue how to get it going!

Deirdre

September 28th, 2011
9:25 am

I have Comcast and only 2 shows can be recorded at the same time and you have to watch one of them. Makes no sense to me but that’s the way it works. On the up side, if you have Comcast, often as not a show will be on On Demand a few days after its first airing. That helps the dvr situation a lot!

Sam-A

September 28th, 2011
9:27 am

It does – I spend a lot of time “On Demand”. And thankfully, many of my shows are available there. It really helps.

Harriett

September 28th, 2011
9:30 am

I have Time Warner Cable here in SC and we have the same trouble. I’ll be watching a show, having set to record two others, and at the appointed time a notification flashes up that a recording is set to begin in one minute. Then, the show I am watching flips to one of the ones being recorded–without me doing a thing. Aggravating. As you say, D, makes no sense. If you had time to watch one of the recorded shows, you’d already be doing it and not recording.

Deirdre

JTesla

Your DVR has two tuners, tuner A let’s you watch one show and tuner B let’s you watch another. Its like having two VCR’s. So if you are watching channel 2 on tuner B and tuner B is scheduled to record channel 8 in a few minutes you get switched. To watch a show that isnt being recorded you’d need a third tuner. Now they just need a cheap box with 4 tuners, or make it easier to feed cable through a PC.

Of course, more tuners costs more money, cable companies being as they are.

Harriett

Sam-A

AT&T advertises that you can record 4 shows on their DVR system. Don’t know if we Comcasters can have it, as cable has always been a monopoly in each area of the city. Seems like I’d have 3, with my cable box, tv and home theater unit, but don’t know how I’d put them all together to record.

Rickster

I already pay $100 a month, with only 1 box, no premium channels (HBO, Show, etc) and only a $16/mo DVR/HD addon. Can’t afford much more with Comcast! And the sad thing is they offer all these $25/mo for first year for NEW customers only. I was first on the system when it was called “Marietta Cable” back in the late 70’s. It’s been thru several name changes since those days. They never offer any really good prices for faithful customers of many years. Sux!

JTesla

Sam-A, give them a call. The wife called up a few years ago looking to lower our rate, they gave us a deal just to stick with them. Of course she did that again a few months ago and they couldn’t offer anything, but you don’t get anything if you don’t ask. Just last week she called and was offered lower rates for signing a 2 year contract. It pays to call them every year or every few years.

I don’t understand how some AI fans aren’t the least bit positive about XF. To me, it’s the same as AI only with a few tweaks to the format. The only setback I notice so far, is they allow too much time for bad acts. That’s kind of AGTish to me. As the show progresses, I expect better talent to bubble up and get more air time.

G, re XF…I absolutely hated the Roman gladiator-like responses of the audience. It’s like watching group-think in action. The second episode was almost all bad…2 hours of bad just to get to the angelic voice of one contestant. Don’t put me through 2 hours of bad! And I also have a “been there done that feeling about it all. I think Simon may be too late for audiences to care.

I will watch the “boot camp” to see where it’s going but it better start getting good at some point in the near future.

G: “it’s the same as AI only with a few tweaks to the format”

Bingo. As Deirdre said: “been there done”. I like Simon, I like LA Reid, I like to look at Nicole, but the “been there done that” with Paula and Simon… I don’t like it. “Been there done that” with… well quite a bit of it.

Now, why doesn’t that translate over as much to my views of Idol for me? Well in a way it does, I’m steadily tiring of the genre, Idol included. However, if given two equal products I’m going to stick with the one that I’ve always used. In this case, so far, Simon has failed to provide a better product, in fact there are several areas that make this product far inferior.

What I like most about XF so far, is the seasoned acts. That part of it reminds me of The Voice. Yeah, I’m biased to older acts, because I really appreciate folks paying their dues. The majority of young acts sound young and inexperienced. I still believe in a higher age limit (18 and older). Kids belong on a kids show.

LOL @ D! “Gladiator audience”. I actually like that format. You get an early temperature from the public.

Between LA and Simon, this show SHOULD be able to produce a quality talent to win it all.

G: I agree with what my fellow oldtimers have said. Except Paula is actually the only thing I DO like about XF! It’s like a “poor man’s” Idol for me. Too much like AGT, which is too much like the old “Gong Show” Hate the very reactionary audience! Don’t like all the ages – too young and too old! 15 to 30 enough of a span for me. And the “bad” ones have not been nearly as funny/nutty as Idol gets. Like Tameka from season 1 or 2 (can’t remember) – funniest thing I’ve seen on tv! Just bad singers.

The first week was pretty dull. As Deirdre said, will finish off the additions, and maybe first show, but if it doesn’t get better, I’m outta there.

I think JT and D may be onto something, as far as my thinking goesd. D said Simon waited too long, and I think that is so. JT said “been there, done that,” and I agree somewhat. I do enjoy seeing the two of them together, but this does not resonate with me the way it did on Idol (in the first five years or so). However, I can tune “gladiators” out and not let them bother or influence me at all. JT said he preferred to stick with the one that started it all, and that is the way I feel. I did not feel any allegiance to The Voice, and I will never feel anything special for XF.
