Frank Ski, the V-103 morning host, is aware of the pitfalls of opening a restaurant. Among them: high start-up costs, staffing issues, competition in a lousy economy. He could lose a fortune.

But for ten years, he has been envisioning a restaurant/lounge under his own name. On Thursday night, he finally unveiled it in the space of the Original Mick’s restaurant on Peachtree Road. Tanya, his wife, said they’ve been prepping the space since February.

“It’s all about living out your dream,” he said. “It’s fruition of a dream.”

The party drew hundreds of friends and family, including former mayor Bill Campbell, Tamika Raymond (Usher’s ex) and Ray J, Brandy’s brother.

The restaurant/lounge opens on Monday, Sept. 19.

“It’s straight American and has my influence of places I’ve been all over, growing up in South Florida to living in New York to being in Baltimore,” Ski said in an interview Thursday night. “It has a little of all that put together.”

His favorite dishes on the menu: fried red snapper, seafood pot pie, short ribs and Baltimore crab cakes.

There are plenty of open spaces and couches during lounge hours, plus an outdoor area. As a wine connoisseur, he also created a wine room where people could socialize as well.

“People just want a drink and some appetizers. They don’t necessarily want a full meal,” he said. “We have to create that environment.”  Frank Ski’s will be open for dinner and late night at first, and will open for lunch in a month.pouring wine

Why did he pick this location? “We’re right on Peachtree. We have our own parking. We’ve got good visibility. It’s a great building.”

Ski also poached the general manager from the nearby Houston’s, James Johnson. Johnson said three keys to success he learned from seven years at Houston’s: consistency, efficiency and hospitality. Master those three and customers will come back, he said.

Tanya, his wife, said they are both foodies so she is supporting him 100% in this venture. They are in a lease-to-own arrangement with the landlord, she noted.

I know Frank Ski loves seeing his name in lights. He and and his wife need to quit sampling the menu items, or he, his wife and big ego aren’t going to fit in a booth.

…it will be because he had that slime ball Bill Campbell front and center on opening night, as most of Atlanta has not forgotten how he reamed the city and state, first with the “shanty town Olympic” t-shirt sales, and then the “straight to jail” financial shennanigans…better check your pockets Frank, anytime you are dealing with, or near, Campbell…

I’m sure Fake Ski loves seeing his name in lights. Did his wife really need to say they are both foodies? From the looks of them, that is quite obvious. Oh well, I don’t listen to name dropping Fake Ski on the radio and I certainly won’t patronize his restaurant. Hopefully, V103 will replace him on the morning show soon. Then, and only then, will I start listening again.

Restaurants are difficult businesses to run; most celebrity places go out of business in 6 months.
I will support you. Bad thing about Atlanta – too many haters.

At least you have the courage to try to live our dreams, other folks spend too much time being negative. In a down economy – you are one brave soul!

Since he claims to have been influenced by South Florida/ Baltimore and New York then he needs to take his old looking self back there.I don’t listen to him and haven’t listen for atleast 3 years but I recall how much he bragged on those places that he couldn’t make it in.Atlanta radio is so lame to even put a clown like Ski on a pedestal because he’s nothing but a name dropping phony and only phony wanna be’s support him and they are the ones that always scream the word “hater”…

The minority partner status means that Frank Ski owns the majority of the stock in the restuarant. In this case minority is not a reference to race.

Thanks for your investment in our local economy Frank. You could have kept all of your cash to yourself, instead you’re taking a chance in a horrible economic climate by providing lots of jobs to those who need them. Architects, designers, dishwashers, servers, painters, carpenters, valet attendants. electricians, plumbers….and many more all owe you a debt of gratitude. This is the type of “job creation” that deserves a tax break. Bravo!

@Parker…Blacks are not monolithic therefore Blacks can feel what they want for Frank Ski who has let it be known that he sees himself as Latino, which is neither here nor there but that is what he claims….Like I said the people that mainly support him are “fakes” that will always scream out his favorite word and that is “hater”.If you want to support him,do that no one is stopping you but you don’t dictate what others do with their money or time.

White people in Atlanta aren’t any more racist than they are in any place in America. There are racists in every corner of this country so lets not even mislead people into believing Whites are more racist in the South because that is one lie that sho nuff need to cease!

Rodney, thanks for the announcement. Wow, there are so much Haters in this city/state of Georgia, most of whom do not support anything positive, but seek negative in everything. Yes, it is a sickness beyond recovery! No wonder in this state our entrepreneurship is extremely low and our unemployment rate is extremely high at 10.2 compared to the national average. Folks, STOP, STOP, STOP HATING in Georgia and start welcoming and supporting entrepreneurship/new businesses in the city/state, which as you should know, helps boost our local economy! Congrats Frank! As an entrepreneur, my wife and I will be there for support. Please remember the key to your restaurant’s success is to keep it simple – Manage the operation efficiently (bookkeeping) and provide Good Food/Price, Great “friendly” Service and avoid “the Haters/Distracters/Nonpaying customers” by all means necessary (think big/think global). We look forward to a wonderful dining experience at Ski’s as well as future announcement on locations #2 (NYC), #3(MIA) and 4th (MD). Again, Good luck and knock ‘um out!

I went to the opening of Frank Ski’s restaurant last night. The staff was pleasant, polished and professional. The drinks, the food and service was excellent. Out of the 11 years i’ve being dinning out in the Atl. I would say this have been my best experience in dinning out. Great job to all the “Master Minds” in this venur. I will continuously enjoy dinning at Frank Ski’s restaurant.

Stop the “Stop Hating” speech. Frank Ski is a poser and only does this to boost his ego. I hope the restaurant will be good because at the end that’s why I go for the food and not any celebrities because them being there doesn’t make the food any better.

I am very skeptical that this will be another black Hollywood poser spot with mediocre food, bad customer service and overpriced menu. The same way that Shout, Twist, Strip, etc were and are. And the reason I say this has nothing to do with “Hating”. It is simple. The man is not a chef or known for his food expertise, he is simply a radio jock who “knows” celebs and made a lot of money off it. So anyone that promotes his restaurant after himself and has no ties in the food community shows me just that. If he would have called it something else and maybe promoted his “Chef” because he will be the one that puts the food on the menu.

So until he proves me wrong, that’s how I feel. However I will give it a shot and it either will be what I expected or not.

Don’t listen to Frank or anyone on V-103. Having said that, I do know that anytime you open a business and hire people, it has a postive impact on federal, state, and local tax revenues. Not only that, it has a postive impact on local businesses in the employees communites; not to mentioned the self worth a person feel when he/she is working.

Every blog you read on the ajc is just full of hate and negativism. If you feel that bad about life, do us all a favor and go play in the traffic on 285…….on Fridays evenings.

NH – you are right that a business does improve the economy but in order to maintain it you have to have proper business etiquette which means paying your employees and your vendors on time and not give them BS when they put their time into your business. I give him the benefit of doubt but from what I have seen in the few years for establishments owned by the likes of a Frank Ski a lot of people wind up being burnt badly such as people that worked for Jermaine Dupri or your favorite housewive Sheree with her defunct boutique then you there are bunch of others around town.

So let’s hope that this spot can be an actual business and not just another ego booster or a place for Frank Ski and his partners to pick up women or just have a bunch of posers that just want to be seen but don’t know how to properly tip for service.

The Voice Of Reason

September 18th, 2011

It’s amazing the amount of hate and vitriol that surrounds some of you (and i think we can safely assume, your lives), I mean it’s one thing to have been to the man’s establishment, had an experience, and then write some of what you’ve written, but the place just opened, so it’s safe to assume most of you haven’t been. It seems as if some of you take issue with Frank’s “on-air” personality or (what you’ll never admit to anyone, i know) the level of success he’s been able to achieve. Everyone has a right to their opinion, but to “anticipate” a bad experience, or bad time, is it really difficult to understand how someone would think you hate?.. Frank’s not perfect, and he’ll tell you that.. but he’s far from a bad dude or a phony, He’s done much more good for people personally and professionally than (obviously) some of you know, and never looks for adoration or recognition..he’s a DJ, genius.. it’s his job to be a bit grandiose, he wouldn’t be good at doing what he’s doing if he wasn’t.. he’s no more disingenuous than you or anyone else. don’t be upset because he seemingly does it better or better than that.. gets paid for doing it

Fact is no matter who did this some of you people with negative responses would take shots, because there will always be people who’ll take aim for the cat on top, plainly.. for no other reason than just that..Go, make your assessment based on your “actual” experience, ( i know thats a stretch, but try it..if you hate it, hey’ tell everyone about your experience, he’s a restauranteur now, he will be subject to that kind of criticism , but if you have good time, then make sure you THAT too..and stop being so damn negative, it has a way of consuming you before you know it..and no i do not work for Frank in any capacity, but (obviously) i do know him

(sidebar: if you respond negatively to THIS, you’ve all but reaffirmed your place as “that guy” )

Enjoy your experience..

For the person that I guess suggested the second frank ski restaurant will be in nyc…..listen. the atlanta location MAY (and i capitalize to emphasize) survive for a year but there is no way in hell a New York City location will even get off the ground. See in Atlanta blacks will support a black celebrity (for example mike vick, TI etc) or thugs or black criminals no matter what a piece of crap they are. See in NYC (and everywhere else outside of Atlanta for that matter ie the civilized world) they wont go for a place just because its “black run”. Thats an Atlanta phenomenon because Atlanta is 60% black. If this place is still open in 2013 in ATLANTA I’ll be SHOCKED!!!

In response to “that guy”, your ignorance confirmed you neither have been to Jay-Z’s 40 Club, neither ate at B-Smith Restaurant nor dined at the many-many African-American restaurants in New York City, which are minority owned. Please let go the hate. Again, not every African-American/Caribbean entrepreneur is a thug and bad for business (legal business) – just ask the Taxman. In fact, if more African-Americans customers in Atlanta finally wake up, stop going to the mainstream restaurants outside their communities, like the Atlanta’s Cheesecake Factory, Ted’s, etc, and start supporting minority-owned business, you and others would see many more success stories as well as see many more failed mainstream restaurants/business. My brother, open your mind, Stop Hating and start supporting local businesses in the ATL. Maybe one day you too will have a piece of the “American Dream”. Peace!
