Forbes: Tyler Perry top-paid man in entertainment; Elton John fourth

Atlanta media mogul Tyler Perry is wealthy and successful. We all know that.

Forbes just quantified it, estimating his income from May 2010 to May 2011 as $130 million, more than any other man in entertainment.

That’s more than Simon Cowell (ranked No. 5), more than Brad Pitt, more than Leonardo DiCaprio, the only other actor in the top 10 Forbes compiled.

Forbes credited Perry’s five films he has made the past two years and two TV series. He is also starring in author James Patterson’s “I, Alex Cross” as detective Alex Cross.

Part-time Atlantan Elton John also made the list, generating $100 million in that time period and ranking No. 4, thanks to a worldwide tour.

In between are producers Jerry Bruckheimer at No. 2 and Steven Spielberg at No. 3. Dr. Phil is at No. 7.

Way to go Tyler. Thanks for remembering ” to whom much is given, much is required”. Thanks for giving back. Helping the elderly lady raising her grand kids in Newnan was truly heartwarming. As long as you continue to acknowledge God, he will continue to bless you so that you will be able to bless others. Your mother is smiling down and thanking God for our blessings.

Congrats to him. His movies and tv shows filled a niche in the market that was otherwise unfilled. Capitalism at its best! I don’t particularly care for his movies or tv shows but, nonetheless, congrats to him.

Tyler Perry movies and sitcoms are like McDonalds food. You’ve had better(movies/burgers), you know they’re not good for you if overly consumed, and at times you hate the site of it. But somehow you’ve found yourself buying some a few times a year becuase they’re consistent and always convenient. I have not met a child to date who doesn’t like happy meals or Madea movies.. LOL . And for that I say congrats Mr. Perry for everything you’ve overcome and your business smarts to outwork and outperform so many who problaby thought they were better than you at some point in time. There’s a market for everyone and you serve a market that many look over, and brought your audience feel good entertainment with a message.. I personally would like to see you play more masculine roles, but it looks like you’re beating me to the punch with your new role… Now ride through buckhead in your drop top Rolls Royce and show them wf who’s running ENTERTAINMENT.. you’ve be a billionaire soon

I am curious. Why does the title of every movie or sitcom he makes have the possessive use of his name preceeding it? I don’t think I would have any trouble identifying the work as his regardless of whether his name is there or not. Style you say? Or narcissism?

And by the way, just to be clear. I don’t “hate” Tyler Perry. I “hate” when people use that word like that simply because someone is being critical. I certainly don’t “hate” Tyler Perry because he has tons of money. More power to him. This is America. There seems to be a pervasive theory amongst fans of this guy that somehow everyone who is critical of his work is jealous of his money and that’s the motivating factor behind their dislike of him/his work. Which is simply not true.

Have a great day everyone!

Tyler Perry is multi-talented & creative. He is truly blessed, honors God & presents & exhudes positivity. Not only that, he is generous; never forgets where he came from & makes a point of giving back in abundance to those less fortunate. I embrace his humor & I am thankful he has filled a void in the industry with his work.

For you haters, you’re really not even worthy of me stooping to address you, but I am feeling rather generous today. The more your speak negatively of him, the less positive energy & blessings you will receive. Learn to allow positive words to leave your tongue & permeate your thoughts. You’d be surprised how that can then make you think higher of yourself. People that think highly of themselves tend not to take the time to hate on others because self-esteem is a review of one’s self. Now, I could further expound upon that thought, but I won’t. I hope you’re keeping up & further clarity is not required. Why not try working on you, your goals & aspirations instead of belittling him? As far as you questioning his sexuality, what does that have to do with this article? He is still talented & rich – to coin a phrase from Tamar “point blank period!”

I love Tyler Perry as Madea. I love his movies & plays. For those that don’t, diversity is what makes the U.S. what it is. He has enough supporters, he doesn’t need you, so go do you. One last piece of advice for you – keep hating & see how far you get in life.

Tyler Perry should do more shows were blacks are doctors and lawyers. That way black kids will see that it is indeed possible to become a lawyer and go to law school.

Too many black kids see blacks as NBA players and want to be NBA players. they need to see black people pretending to be successful on TV so they will be inspired.

Howard Stern – CRAP

Rush Limbergh-CRAP

I can think of other countless shows on TV that are PURE CRAP that Make a lot of money. but instead of bitching and complaining I simply Change the channel and Dont watch it.

I am not a fan of Tyler or his work. But I COMMEND him for giving lots of talented African Americans jobs something others on TV and the Big Screen do not. Thank YOu for that Mr.Perry. No I dont own any of your movies(dont care for them, but of course there are a Lot of movies I refuse to go see. Namely Harry Potter and Others but I dont get on here bitching and calling them out)

I want to congratulate Tyler Perry’s accomplishments in the field of entertainment. I can remember back when we were portrayed in films and television it was very derogatory (not funny in the least). Tyler’s films are funny and very truthful – laughter is good for the soul. What makes me especially happy for Tyler is that he has become a hero to my grandchildren. My grandchildren, ages 12 and 14 yrs. have all of Tyler’s movies and watch his tv series every week.. My grandson (the 14 yr. old) has decided that he wants to become a film director just like Tyler Perry. I purchased a small video camera for him and he’s already started making his amateur videos. Can you imagine how this makes my heart feel. I feel happy that he’s not chosen to be a Pimp or a Drug Dealer, but has chosen to follow in the footsteps of Mr. Tyler Perry. Thank You Tyler. @ Listen. Is that 100% accurate? I don’t recall ever referring to the Halloween movies as, “John Carpenter’s Halloween”. or Halloween II. There are some as you point out, but not all, like Mr. Perry.

I do find it disturbing that so many of his fans find that either his financial success or faith in God somehow validates the work he produces as quality. I think movies should = art. IMO, Mr. Perry’s movies are far, far, far from being considered artful. The continuation of the dumbing down of America. But I shouldn’t judge. And as they say, ignorance is bliss.

Tyler Perry has the monoply in the Black Movies and has drawn all movies shares and money towards his movie style and of course no one else will tell our stories in Hollywood, maybe this will wake them up! Our stories are successful to us and others, reminder, we are the minority in America only 12% of us and his success and wealth has reached far beyond Brad Pitt, Steve Stielberg and others… That tells me other nationalities are watching our movies, our stories. I think Tyler Perry high viewership speaks to the greater problem of the black community. I mean I think black people would not watch this show if it was white which speaks to they are not color blind. They put everything in context of skin color.

its kind of like obama…..they would vote for him regardless of whatever how far unemployment climbs or how high poverty levels rise. The man takes vacations to marthas vineyard in seperate jets and no one complains cause he is black (half black actually). I personally think that Tyler is a perfect example of how the more fortunate should act. He is a man was grew up in hard times but worked his way to the top but hasn’t forgotten that he needs to still be compassionate. He conducts himself in a way that we all are supposed to conduct ourselves. His movies are very good and you leave them feeling good. I guess the majority of the movie haters don’t like them because they are not filled with drugs, sex and violence. What has happened to the good movies that the whold family can enjoy. I say keep them coming Tyler. You are an inspiration to many and there are a lot more that could follow your example. Maybe your movies are not liked by so many because you use the word God in them. Who knows. But I will continue going to see them. Kudos to you.

Congratulations to Tyler Perry!! For those of you who do not understand why Black America likes his movies, because he relates to were they come from. There were years ago, a lot of Black Mamas and Grandmamas who acted like the character Madea, and Mr. Brown(on Meet The Browns) These were mainly Southern women, who wore the long dresses, no bras, and wigs. They were vocal and expressed their opinions sometimes with violence. They took charge. These characters do not shame the black community because there is someone like Madea that they can remember in their past, and its funny to see how far they have come from this.

Congrats Mr. Perry! I can think of no one who so deserves good fortune more than you do. I’m an educated person, having captured many awards for work-related performances and have helped set standards in my field. I like pretty much everything you touch. I enjoy a good laugh at the absurdity of “Brown”. I don’t have to have every t.v. show be a work of art- it can just be funny. I don’t have a need to critique every show that makes me laugh for its cultural content or bias. I get so sick of people who think it’s their call to sum up who’s meaningful and who’s not.

As for Rush Limbaugh fans having a “slightly higher IQ” than Tyler Perry fans I woild take into consideration who designed the IQ test, sets the standards, administers the test, reviews the results, compiles the data and presents to the public where it becomes a part of a person’s permanent record. The scriptures warn of those who make their own laws and then judge themselves on how well they did.

Way to go Mr. Perry! Keep blessing us. haters, you really ought find something going for yourself.

IJPC — I just recently moved from East Atlanta so I am not that isolated from the neighborhood you speak of. I just think that certain things are self fulfilling prophecies. All people need to aim higher. As long as the stereotyped pimp and drug dealer exist, black kids will become victims of that stereotype and indeed become drug dealers. If they don’t believe there is a way out, then what other conclusion could they arrive?

To all of you idiots whining, complaining and debating the merits or quality of Mr. Perry’s work: Did you even bother to read the article? It has little to do with the quality of his or any of the other entertainers’ skills, talent or artistic ability. JT — Who wouldn’t want to win the lottery? Sure, I’d like to have money like that. But it is absolutely sickening to see the glorification of money and material things as the sole center of happiness for some people. Success makes us happy. Love makes us happy. Those things are independent of money. Sometimes a parallel can be drawn, but it doesn’t HAVE to be that way. And it sure as heck shouldn’t be put on a pedestal as the pinnacle achievement in life, for God’s sake.

@Timbo

The entire reason the AJC puts a comment section in a blog is to encourage discussion (which you are also engaged in). There are no specific rules or direction of said discussion outlined by the AJC, so in essence they are allowing us to take the topic down whatever path we choose.

And I think it’s a pretty valid to argue the merits of Mr. Perry’s work considering there is much controversy regarding the use of stereotyped characters and dialogue.

As a Black Male I resent you saying blacks would watch Tyler Perry regardless of the content. That is a FLAT out LIE. And for you to include an entire race clearly shows you need to Get out more and get to KNOW some REAL Black folks.

How DARE you lump us all in the same barrel. There are Many blacks like myself that do NOT endorse or go see any of Tylers movies. Personally I hate the Buffoonery and Stereotype casting. I cant Stand Meet the Browns and I dont care for Madea which is just a Man in a dress.
That should not come as a suprise to you as Whites were in DRAG long before Blacks..Milton Berle, Tony Curtis jack lemmon in that movie with Marilyn Monroe. We did not Create The DRAG character. You NEVER hear Blacks complaining about how much Money Harry Potter rakes in and that is nothing but PURE FICTION. Yet it grossed probably a Billion dollars or close. NOTHING in Harry Potter is REAL. But you dont hear blacks saying whites flock to it because its Mostly Whites( the little I saw had maybe on or two blacks from the Little I saw) acutally we could care less.
So your post is clearly RACIST if your going to put all black people in the boat.(no pun intended) I can think of Several Black programs I never watch. Some are cancelled now, but I Never watched them..Meet the Browns, None of the Madea Movies, None of Tyler Perrys movies, The Game, Several BET shows..the defunct Source Hip Hop Awards I watched once and Never watched again(Hated it) and was thrilled when it was cancelled.
So I guess that makes me Not Black? You Need to Educate yourself More about the diversity of Blacks in America because clearly you dont have a Clue who we are.

Truth Believer- 1) I’m sure you are just angry and don’t actually believe that I owe you money because my great, great, great, great grandfather wronged yours. Should I be imprisoned because of the laws that he may have broken at the time too?

2) Would you expect to paid in today’s wages or 200 years ago’s wages? Minimum wage in 1955 was .75 so how much would that equate to in 1830?? Let’s say it was .05. In a 40 hour work week you would be owed $200. 50 weeks in a year (2 weeks of vacation) times 30 years of work brings the total to $3000. I make more in a month of teaching school.

3) Since the North abolished slavery in 1820 and the South in 1865 who is going to go back in history to trace the lineage of who owes what to whom? People moved, families branched out, plus expansion, etc. Since their isn’t the resources or the manpower to track all of that I’d say it’s a lost cause. Move on.

4) It’s not the white man’s fault that gangbangers, “gangstas”, “hustlas”, and males with several kids out of wedlock are cool. Until 1)- 4) change your culture won’t.

From all the productions I’ve seen by Perry, it seems like there is ALWAYS at least one character who is strong, wise, and could be a model for anybody, any color.

Cannot all you who are nothing but critical of his works at LEAST give him credit for THAT? Maybe that is an underlying message: that amid all the nonsense and pitiness of life, there IS yet strength, stability, and character still to be found.

btw – I considered Obama because McCain was not exactly some lights out candidate but in the end I chose the candidate that was not in a racist church, did not have ties to terrosist Bill Ayers….did not have ties to felon George Soros.

I did not base my vote on race, but on what I could see. I saw one president who spent extra time in the hanoi Hilton to show his men he was not getting special treatment and I saw another guy tied to radicals.

While we are at it, let’s penalize the hardworking people by making them pay for health insurance because as we all know, it’s not fair for only some people to have things. Everyone should get a trophy, everyone should be the same no matter how hard you work (or lack thereof). Why wouldn’t an illegal hispanic family have 8 kids in this country. Look Mr. Champagne drinker. Here’s what I think. I have a big problem with the black community’s obsession with all things material and thinking that material posessions somehow buy you class. Precisely the way you behave. If you really had the money to nonchalantly drink Champagne in France and Monaco, you certainly wouldn’t have to blurt that out on a blog so that you would be perceived as someone who has class. You have none, it’s clear. Unless you believe there are not social problems within the black community, you might think that financial resources could be better allocated to address some of those issues, instead of perpetuating the “bling” lifestyle that so many foolishly desire.

What happened? Did someone tie you down in front of your TV set and force you to watch every episode of his shows? Drag you to his movies kicking and screaming? If you don’t want to watch it, don’t! BUT quit whining!

I’ve never seen any of his shows. They aren’t my type of humour. But my congrats to him. He came from homeless to one of the wealthiest men in Atlanta. Also one of the most “giving” people in Atlanta (and that’s more important, in my book)!

Are his works “crap?” They probably won’t win any Academy Awards any time soon but then again, he didn’t make them to win awards, he made them to entertain. AND that, they do! One person’s “crap” is another person’s “entertainment”. Go into the black community and ask a young kid if his work is crap. Then ask if ballet and opera is crap. A whole different outlook! An outlook that made him $130M!

And if you’re suggesting that there’s even a remote comparison to problems within the black community to those of Indian, Asian, Persian (formerly Iranian, cough cough), Portuguese, Hispanic, and/or White communities, well, then I think you’ve been overseas too long.

I agree Beanster…the problems with the black community far outweight those others and I think the problem is internal. Could it be that those other communitties have a strong family value culture?

Let’s see…you found “A” black person that you “Love” (not that you would vote for). If you would vote for him that would leave you voting white the rest of the 99.9% of the time. Why do YOU white people ALWAYS vote for the WHITE candidates? Huh? Just askin!

(Yes…I’m white.)

Lady K

One thing I’m not is thin skinned. Had to laugh at that because I anything but that!

How can we tell you if black people are going to vote for President Obama next year. You might get a better answer asking if the black people WE KNOW are going to vote for him next year.

@ Ron Burgundy, you’re not as intelligent as you claim to be. And no one’s answering you, because I’m pretty sure…they’re thinking along the same lines as I am…one person can’t speak for an entire race of people (because everyone’s reason for voting one way or another is different, hmmm since we’re all individuals) or do you believe the theory that “we” all think alike and have the same rationale….like “we” all look alike???. So, once again LET IT GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Seriously!!!!

@ Ron….first and foremost, your relentless concern about how Black People vote is crazy to me. And secondly, just because I’m Black doesn’t give me the monopoly on the Black Voting Agenda. I can only speak for me, and how I vote. But, here’s a suggestion: why don’t you contact your local NAACP or write your local Black Congressman or even President Obama and ask the same question….maybe you’ll get an answer…

Yeah. I don’t get it. His shows are not watched any people know I know. I never see anyone going to any of his movies when I am at the theater. His characters are dumb. His audience must be too. He is a copy cat of Eddie Murphy, Martin Lawrence and even Arsenio Hall but just not as funny.

Obviously jealous idiots-posting-here aside, Mr. Perry’s innate genius runs freely through his productions. This sensitive, gentle man’s success is clearly due to his perseverance and hard work … and EARNING it through his admiration of, devotion to, and inclusion of the Ultimate Creator in his productions. The only shortcoming apparent in his brilliance is the lack of inclusion of Mr. Perry’s UC’s own oft-persecuted and misunderstood members of the LGBT community. Otherwise, Mr. Perry, YOU D’ GREATESS!

It is so funny to see how so many people dislike him so, but you find time out of your “precious” schedule to comment about something you don’t like. I think the most important question is WHY ARE YOU POSTING IN A BLOG THAT COMMENDS SOMEONE YOU DON”T CARE FOR? Yes you are entitled to your own opinion, but why waste time you will never get back on something you don’t care for.

Congratulations Tyler Perry and I look forward to seeing your upcoming projects as well as supporting you.

Congrats Mr. Perry, well done! I see that you have all of these critics all claiming to dislike your work and even you personally. So I guess you became the Top Man in Entertainment because of your critics just as much as you have from your supporters. I Love You and it seems everyone else does as well. I guess you have to be a on drugs, or a woman beater or maybe you have to be Charlie (Sherm-head/alcoholic) Sheen, George Clowny, or one of those Baldwin boys or even the Sad Situation and just maybe this blog wouldn’t be as hateful and disrespectful. Stop acting like a Mad Black Woman, with all of your bitter selves.

He may be the nicest guy on the planet – yay for that – but his TV shows and movies are unwatchable junk. Yes, he portrays black people as doctors and lawyers at work, but they act like uneducated, insulting trash when they get home. Junk.

Ten years from now (unless we get stupider) we’ll be wondering what all the fuss was about.

If you are white and you make a negative comment about anyone who was born black in the USA you are automatically called a racist.
They have a very deep inferiority complex caused by slavery and cannot engage in conversation with a white person without feeling inferior.
The response is anger, name calling, play the race card, blame.
No matter what you say that’s the extent of the conversation.

First, I would like to commend Mr. Perry on his work in the industry and in the community. It is Inspirational. We need to look at the heart and the character of a person.

Second, There are psuedo-intellectuals on this blog ( Ron B. and Vote for Obama cause he’s black) that can not convey their thoughts in a fully articulate manner. These individuals come up with outdated numbers and information and attempt to pass off their personal opinions as facts 95 -99 percent of African Americans voted for Presidentt Obama because he is black. Where are you getting this information from? What source? Then there is a individual that claims ” They have a very deep inferiority complex caused by slavery and cannot engage in conversation with a white person without feeling inferior.” Where is this coming from? Inferior to whom? The topic is Tyler’s success and the good he does in and around the community…. We should stick with the positive topic and leave the Politics to another blog

Thats Probably the Most unbias Post thats on here. This Person “I voted for obama because he’s black’ and that Ron person continues to attack Blacks as a whole. Then get Upset when we attack them back. Inferior? No that would be “Vote for obama because hes black” To bring up slavery which has NOTHING to do with how African Americans think today. that would be the same as saying whites think the same way today as they did back during the civil war. Some do. Many dont. Same as Blacks. Fact is you bring your tail on here attacking blacks and you will get attacked. Plain and simple. no exceptions. You bring your tails on here using words to describe a people such as Inferior and what do you expect to get in return? Why not Think before you speak?

Don’t particular care about his TV programs but I have viewed some of his movies. His wealth comes from the paying public who feels his works are entertainment…its a CHOICE…how many movies or TV shows has one viewed and felt afterwards that their time was a waste of time? I do agree that he should produce more positive/upbeat movies or TV programs that will inspire African-American youth to feel that one can achieve greatness and wealth through hard work and some lucky breaks. Keep on pushin’ !!

After readin this blog I think we can come to a few conclusions.

Tyler perry = nice guy
Tyler Perry makes crappy shows
If you criticize his shows you are a racist
White people hate when blacks make money

My question is this….if white hate blacks making money they must love Obama cause African American poverty levels and unemployment have shot up higher then the averages nationally since he arrived.

I think blakc people need to be less sensitive when a black man is criticized. Tyler Perry is a giving man, but his shows are TERRIBLE, I mean Saved By The Bell was terrible yet many people remember those shows. Baywatch was terrible, but white people aren’t getting crazy over hasselhoff getting flack.

@ Normal Person …or so you believe

Just because you think his show’s are terrible, doesn’t mean that millions of others think the same. Apparently many others don’t feel as you do, or Tyler Perry wouldn’t be the number one money maker in entertainment. Not only black people go to his shows, movies and buy his DVD’s. Many white people too.

Tyler Perry is an entertainer. Entertainment comes in different forms and fashion, and there’s something for everybody. I love Tyler Perry’s movies, tv shows and stage plays, which have a lesson that can be learned by all. Tyler Perry is doing him. He even gives back to the community. His hard work has paid off, and he gets to enjoy the fruits of his labor, and believe me, Forbes has done their research. Tyler Perry is the perfect role model of someone … Moving from Success to Significance. Keep it coming Tyler Perry, I GOT MY EYE ON YOU AND I’M WATCHING FOR SURE!!!

Once again Ignorance is NOT Bliss! For those of you who can’t relate to the messages portrayed in Tyler’s movies,plays,sitcoms- my advice to you is ‘Keep Living!’ Life experiences come in various stages. I have been a fan of Mr. Perry’s work for many years. Not only does it help me (and many of my friends) when going through trying times to laugh sometimes as we cry, it also teaches a lesson (that many of us who make repetitive mistakes and NEVER learn from our experiences) to focus on what’s really important- God’s grace, mercy & favor as we experience life at its best or worst.
