Forbes: Tyler Perry top-paid man in entertainment; Elton John fourth

Atlanta media mogul Tyler Perry is wealthy and successful. We all know that.
Forbes just quantified it, estimating his income from May 2010 to May 2011 as $130 million, more than any other man in entertainment.
That’s more than Simon Cowell (ranked No. 5), more than Brad Pitt, more than Leonardo DiCaprio, the only other actor in the top 10 Forbes compiled.
Forbes credited Perry’s five films he has made the past two years and two TV series. He is also starring in author James Patterson’s “I, Alex Cross” as detective Alex Cross.
Part-time Atlantan Elton John also made the list, generating $100 million in that time period and ranking No. 4, thanks to a worldwide tour.
In between are producers Jerry Bruckheimer at No. 2 and Steven Spielberg at No. 3. Dr. Phil is at No. 7.

IJPC — I just recently moved from East Atlanta so I am not that isolated from the neighborhood you speak of. I just think that certain things are self fulfilling prophecies. All people need to aim higher. As long as the stereotyped pimp and drug dealer exist, black kids will become victims of that stereotype and indeed become drug dealers. If they don’t believe there is a way out, then what other conclusion could they arrive?

To all of you idiots whining, complaining and debating the merits or quality of Mr. Perry’s work: Did you even bother to read the article? It has little to do with the quality of his or any of the other entertainers’ skills, talent or artistic ability. The article simply states that Mr. Perry is the Highest Paid Entertainer….That statistic pretty much speaks for itself. No debate required. So all of you broke, envious hillbillies may now go back to your trailers…

I have never watched one of his movies but have seen him in several interviews. The man is intelligent, kind and genuine. He deserves his success ..he gives millions back to his community.

JT — Who wouldn’t want to win the lottery? Sure, I’d like to have money like that. But it is absolutely sickening to see the glorification of money and material things as the sole center of happiness for some people. Success makes us happy. Love makes us happy. Those things are independent of money. Sometimes a parallel can be drawn, but it doesn’t HAVE to be that way. And it sure as heck shouldn’t be put on a pedestal as the pinnacle achievement in life, for God’s sake.

The entire reason the AJC puts a comment section in a blog is to encourage discussion (which you are also engaged in). There are no specific rules or direction of said discussion outlined by the AJC, so in essence they are allowing us to take the topic down whatever path we choose.
And I think it’s a pretty valid to argue the merits of Mr. Perry’s work considering there is much controversy regarding the use of stereotyped characters and dialogue.

I almost sent a letter to Tyler asking for my money back for the “Why Did I Get Married II” movie, but I do congratulate him for all his successes. It has not been handed to him, he did not get into the business because his “daddy” was in the business and reached back to help him, and it takes a lot of blood and sweat to make all this stuff happen: the plays, the movies, and television. By the way, I like “Meet the Browns” and its mindless humor. It’s absurd sure, but pure escapism.
