Jada Pinkett Smith's "HawthoRNe" lasted three seasons. CREDIT: TNT
TNT has decided to put “HawthoRNe” down after three seasons. The nurse drama starring Jada Pinkett Smith saw a sizable drop in viewership this past summer.
The show averaged about 2.4 million viewers compared to about 3.2 million a year earlier.
It was TNT’s second lowest rated show of the summer, behind only “Men of a Certain Age,” which was also canceled. And critics never much liked the show.
TNT’s “Memphis Beat,” which averaged about three million viewers this season, is still up for grabs for renewal. Deadline.com, citing no particular sources, said it has a 50/50 shot at renewal.
Other summer TNT shows, including “Leverage,” “Falling Skies” and “Rizzoli & Isles,” have already been given another season.
Here’s TNT’s statement:
TNT has decided not to order a fourth season of HawthoRNe. TNT truly appreciates the tremendous dedication of everyone involved in HawthoRNe. The series gave TNT the opportunity to work with many outstanding people, including Jada Pinkett Smith and the rest of the show’s talented cast, crew, producers and writers. We wish everyone involved with HawthoRNe nothing but the best.

Seasons 1 and 2 of HawthoRNe were good, Season 3 sucked. I hated what the writers did to the show. I am not at all surprised at the cancellation. I think the timing is actually coincidental – the show lost viewers long before the rumors started.

Did not know that Jada Pinkett had a show until the rumors of a failed marriage to Will Smith and those jaw dropping sex scenes with Anthony.
Maybe it is her own fault, too much bad publicity killed her show. Maybe her hubby made her shut it down as mentioned earlier.
You folks needs to be more concerned about our country going down the socialist toilet and turning into a toxic waste dump instead of watching so much low class television. The reason shows don’t survive on all these days is because there are too many networks and not enough decent TV. Listen up Tyler Perry, if Oprah fails you have NO hope!

Glad to hear Hawthorn RN is canceled and we won’t see Marc Anthony kissing around on Mrs Will Smith- Jada anymore on a weekly TV series. If the rumors are true about these two Jennifer should sue Jada Pinkett for alienation of affection. Teach little Mrs Smith (and other home wrecking adulterers) some hard “karma” for the injustice she inflicted on the Anthony Family’s children.

The only show on TNT worth watching is The Closer. The other shows initially piggybacked off of The Closer (including R&I now) when they were first introduced, but, when moved to another day and time they just could not hack it. In order for a show to be successful it must be realistic and sorry a nurse just does not wield this much power in any hospital. TNT needs to find out what USA is doing because they are landing one good show after another.

Marc and Jennifer’s problems has nothing to do with Will and Jada. Jada would never leave Will and I wouldn’t either. TNT made a mistake cancelling the show at this time of rumors, they should of waited til next season. Cancelling now just feeds into all the rumors. People read into tabloids way too much. Grow up people. Loved the show Jada. Sorry it was cancelled.

If there is a massive campaign for HawthoRNe like there was for The Game then maybe BET might pick it up. Acting is a craft and the actors are in character doing their roles but it is astounding how some still have an inability to tell the difference from reality and make believe. So DdT contends that sistas in leading roles are not appealing to a mainstream audience and no one wants to see a ANGRY B_K Woman. Well in the 21st century throwbacks to Beulah or Julia ain’t going to get it. One can only endure so much of watching W_E women whose characters in essence are “train wrecks”. Writers of today tend to throw everything up against the wall in the hope something will stick. None of them would have lasted during the golden age of television (circa the 1950’s and 1960’s)

As several others have already mentioned, seasons 1 and 2 were great. You got to see their interactions with patients and how they were affected by them. This year it was all about them and nothing about actual patients Several of the storylines I didn’t understand (ex. sudden injection of faith in the show). While I don’t have a problem with it, that was not a storyline at any other time. It felt more like them trying to patronize viewers more than it felt real and it was just out of the blue! This is one show that was clearly messed up by its own writers. I don’t buy Will having anything to do with it. After the first few shows, I was just about done with it and the Marc Anthony/Jada PSmith sex scene made me a little uncorfortable because it seemed real. They ruined a very promising show. But I do love me some Leverage! Glad they will be back!

The only reason why Oprah now likes DWTS is that is seems to now be more ‘gay-friendly,’ with Chaz and Carson Pressley. Oprah needs to just GO AWAY!!!! When you up and change the entire synopsis of a TV show in its third Season that is in total contradiction of the first two Seasons, this is what happens; YOU GET CANCELLED!! I called it quits after the episode where Christina did the Ewwww with Marcs character but some fans vowed to hang in there. I feel sorry for thoese fans because this is a slap in their face. Did not watch any of the episodes this season as I thought that last season started to show a decline. There was just too much of an agenda of Nurses knowing everything, and doing stuff way outside their training and skill level. If she wanted to do all that stuff on the show….make it about a doctor…or at least a nurse who works as a team member. It kinda became all about her……..

I liked the show and thought the third season was the best although I have to agree that them focusing more on the characters and less on the patients probably doomed it. What they should do is bring it back and jada let Shonda Rims who produces Grey’s and Private Practice to take over. She knows how to integrated the hospital drama with the character’s personal drama.

I don’t think a network would cancel a show based on rumors. If anything, rumors create interest from viewers who wouldn’t normally watch the show. More viewers correlate to higher ad revenue for the network.

I truly enjoyed seeing the talented Jada Pinkett-Smith spread her wings and put this show on the air. Seasons 1 and 2 were great. I wanted to support season 3 but it became too unbelievable to me. The writers needed to delete the scripts and start over. Here are the problems with the 2011 storylines that I saw:
1. It abruptly began with the marriage scene of Christina and the doctor. That required better set up.
2. The doctor suddenly developing a drinking problem and gun fetish was really weird. He never seemed like a violent guy.
3. The alcoholism of the hospital administrator just went way off the deep end. There were no hints of that. Foreshadowing helps the viewer accept these crazy ideas.
4. The love story between Christina’s daughter and the older surgeon was sickening. The slap from the surgeon’s wife was worth watching but this storyline turned my stomach.
5. It was extremely inappropriate for Marc Anthony’s character to chase Christina so hard after she told him she loved her husband. He was like a selfish puppy dog.
6. Enough has been said about that scrotching hot scene between Marc and Jada after the mother’s party. I dropped Cinemax a long time ago.
Positives:
1. Seeing Christina’s daughter show maturity. Big plus.
2. The episode in which Christina saw the counselor and revealed information about her father’s alcoholism was very well done.
3. It was interesting to see the drama between Christina and her best friend/successor.
4. It did not bother me that Christina was a nurse. It showed her as a strong advocate for patients and the intricacy of the nurse’s role.
I look forward to the next Jada project. I too will miss The Closer. I’m hoping for a spin off with Captain Raydor that could somehow involve that babe Fritz! (The end)

I agree the way she jumped from her husband to Nick, I think turned a lot of people off. There really wasn’t any foreshadowing of him even being that kind of guy in the second season. And they never to me, totally explain who the hell beat her up. I always thought the way Nick acted that he might have been involved some how.

I will miss the show. The writers for season three did not write good plots or maybe the show did not have a writer. I was waiting for the next season to see who shot Marc. TNT, I think it was bad idea to remove the show. Maybe the writers should have beeen replace or take a poll from the viewers before cancelling the series.
I am not a person that watch TV constantly but I really enjoyed the show and will miss the actors. What I notice in season three that the show plots went to far in left field. The show was not about what went on in hospital anymore it was to much focus on Jada.
Keep the show and bring back the real reason the show broadcast in the first season.

SOmetimes a free for all or do what you want to marriage cannot be covered with money. (Will/Jada). The Closer should be next. Everyone knows that she is guilty of conspring to have that subject killed. That is why she left him in the neighborhood. She is to much of a spoiled little girl thinking everything should go her way and what she do is completely right. At first glance, I knew that show wasn’t going to last. A drama about a nurse? And with Pinkett as the lead? She’s not that great of an actress to pull of a drama. After shows like Chicago Hope, Grey’s Anatomy, House and heck, even Scrubs, HawthoRNe didn’t really pushing the envelope for a groundbreaking show.

I saw this coming a mile away. The infidelity rumors had NOTHING to do with it. This show–per the numbers–was losing steam. And to be honest, it didn’t start strong in the first place, so going down from an already mediocre position can only mean one thing: buh-bye!
And let me just add this, I tried watching the show the first two seasons, mostly because I liked the leading man (I thought he was cute, lol). Other than that, the show seemed horribly miscast (that lady who played Jada’s daughter should never get another acting job, omg she was bad) and the writing left a lot to be desired. Instead of fixing these holes though, ie getting better writers and replacing some of the miscasts, they decide to do some weird turn into soap opera-ville. The Marc Anthony/ Derek Luke characters, who brought the inappropriate relationship storyline was just horrid. They represent the death nail to a show that was already on life support.
All that to say, good riddance “Hawthorne!”

Jada’s character was not credible (a nurse involved in every aspect of the whole hospital–not answering to anyone.) She tried being tough too hard, she didn’t let it flow. I think Marc added to the show, but too late.

If they cancel “Memphis Beat,” I’m officially quitting TNT! They can’t take “Men of a Certain Age” AND “Memphis Beat” away from me!

I can understand Hawthorne…However, “Memphis Beat” needs another season..Nothing like it on TV, and can only get better..Great cast, writers and producers..

On the contrary. I think the publicity was a ploy to try to get the show to survive. It works for so many other publicity stunts.

I think that was a bad decision, because that was a great show. We loved to watch it. Sometimes twice in one night. What you all need to do is change the time, not cancel the show. I believe if you would view it earlier more people would watch it, say around 9:00. My heart is truly broken. That show was as if it was reality. Please reconsider your decision. Heart Broken!

Yes, this was a horrible decision. TBS, BET, TV One or somebody need to pick up this show. And let the drama go on.

I don’t care how good or bad “HAWTHORNE” was. Let’s face it. The real reason TNT cancelled the show was due to the rumors. Open your eyes and stop pretending that the rumors had nothing to do with the cancellation.
This society is so damn hypocritical!

Never really got into the show. What the Heck. plot did not make sense gets married then have affair then all confused about things.
No wonder show did not last long. Why would you marry a couple then the ink is not even dry turns around and has an affair. Who does that!!!!!!

Seriously, how does this blog determine which comments not to post? I don’t understand why my post isn’t going through. It is very annoying to take time writing and then having nothing to show for it. It sucks.

@Tim It may have been a technical glitch. Sometimes that happens.

It’s ineresting to read the varios comments. Some are artistically savy being able to assess the writers’s talent and caliber of actors’ talent; while others are plain emotional idiots, basing commits on worthless press fodder. The show had value but unfortunately did pull in ratings. Wish there was one more season to tie loose ends. MEN OF A CERTAIN AGE: great first season.

WELL I think maybe that sexual scene was a bit much for BIG WILLY as some on you call him which is a good name for him…Marc is a VIrgo and believe me they cannot be trusted. Jada acting is so so…They got money get your OWN NETWORK. but dont let Jada be the star…However I love all of them BIG WILLIE, my Marc skinny Anthony and Jada…But its a whole lot of shaking going on in those families..LOL

LOL yeah TNT is going to cancel a show that is making it money because of “rumors”. It was the SECOND LOWEST rated show of the summer, but no you celebrity leaches think it was the TV company that shut it down because of TMZ. Must be nice to blame all of your failures on someone else. I am guessing you will blame her failed marriage on the cancellation of her TV show.
