Gordon Ramsay’s ‘Kitchen Nightmares’ coming to Atlanta

Gordon_Ramsays_Kitchen_Nightmares

Do you want to see irascible, tart-tongued TV chef Gordon Ramsay up close and personal? He’ll be in town the week of Sept. 5 to try to fix two restaurants for his Fox show “Kitchen Nightmares.”

He’ll first stop by Michon’s in College Park, which has been around for 21 years, according to its website, and features seafood and smoked meats.

Ramsay and the show producers will be shooting at Michon’s Sept. 5 to 8. The reservation email address is collegeparkrest@gmail.com

He will then travel to Park’s Edge in Inman Park, which provides contemporary cuisine.

The show will be at Park’s Edge from Sept. 9 to 12. The reservation email is inmanparkrest@gmail.com

On the surface, Park’s Edge does not appear to be a restaurant that needs help, based on reviews.

One of our Food & More bloggers Jenny Turknett in January visited Park’s Edge and liked the food. So did 80 percent of reviewers on UrbanSpoon.com.

Here’s how the restaurant itself markets itself:

The menu offers an enticing array of dishes imagined from Old and New World flavors, made bold by the unique arrangement of spices inspired by the kitchens of Executive Chef Jorge I. Pacheco’s Latino upbringing. Inspired by the history and warmth of the small neighborhood where it is nestled, Park’s Edge is an oasis for those seeking an elegant and contemporary venue to sample delicious cuisine and seductive cocktails. Join Jorge and Owner Richard N. Wadlington for a unique and memorable evening out in Atlanta.

Nine reviewers on Yelp.com gave Michon’s an average of three stars out of five.

During production, the two restaurants won’t be able to take  reservations by phone because producers have to turn phones off while shooting.

Curious to see if Ramsay can help both restaurants and whether the subsequent publicity will boost business. This is the show’s first time in Atlanta.

“Kitchen Nightmares” has been, at best, a moderate success for Fox, falling short of the ratings of Ramsay’s better known competitive reality show “Hell’s Kitchen.” The  last episode of “Kitchen Nightmares” May 23 drew a mere 3.86 million viewers on a Friday night, but its 18-49 rating that night was by far the best during the 8 p.m. hour. Despite the show’s modest ratings, Fox obviously likes Ramsay. He is the only personality on the network who appears on three different shows: “Kitchen Nightmares,” “Hell’s Kitchen” and “MasterChef.”

“Nightmares” is currently shooting its fifth season, which appears to be scheduled for the mid-season.  About 44 episodes have aired so far, not counting “revisited” episodes in which Ramsay checks in on restaurants months or years after he originally came to fix things.

I love this show! Also visited Michons a couple years back… I could’ve done better in my own kitchen.

OMG. I like Michon’s. I know the food is not 5 Star, but the atmosphere is nice, especially at this new location.

I like Ramsey’s Kitchen Nightmares on BBC better. Unfortunately, I don’t think he is doing new British versions now. They seem more refined and less dramatic than the American version of the show. Maybe it is the announcer’s accent…

I have been to Michons once and the waiter was horrible the food was ok not great. After that experience I didn’t want to go again. Maybe after Ramsey helps them I’ll try again.

Lat me tell you about my experience at Michon’s. About 18 months ago I had a business lunch there for a client. It was about 25 degrees outside. We had a young and inexperienced waiter. After seating he promptly spilled the entire pitcher of ice water on me. I was soaked through from my jacket, shirt and pants. I didn’t make a big fuss because this was business and I maintained composure. After the meal (which was just not great and over priced) I did feel that I should be compensated for sitting in wet clothes and the dry cleaning. Maby a dessert. So when I mention this to the waiter he tells me and I quote “No, I spilled the water on YOU, not your food”. In astonishment I asked for the manager. She comes over looking and acting very skeptical, like two people in corporate business attire are scamming her for free food. You know what she does? She insults me and my guest by deducting $1.00 from a 40.00 bill. If they can’t tell corporate expense accounts from homeless people and value their customers then they need more than Ramsey! I have told everyone this story and advised them to stay away. However I did give the student waiter an adequate tip because he was just doing what his enviromental culture told him. I am sure he will do better.

Michon’s is terrible. No flavor whatsoever.

That’s not a typo folks – in all fairness, they are WHOLE wings but nonetheless waaaay overpriced – two things make or break restaurants – marketing and management – from a mktg perspective Michon’s needs to fix the pricing, portions and presentation and from a mgmt perspective they have fallen prey to what a lot of black businesses suffer from which is tepid, lackadaisical customer service (without a smile)

I just hope he’s able to get out of College Park alive. He obviously doesn’t know anything about that part of Atlanta but hopefully he’ll learn in time and bring a security force with him

When I was there they served us the powdered Countrytime lemonade and the mac & cheese was the worst ever. I can’t believe they served it. Very dry and crumbly.

I really didn’t feel welcome when I visited Michons when they were on the other end of Virginia Ave. I got the roll of the eyes from the hostess, like, “what are YOU doing in here?” Never been back, and besides what’s the big deal about smoked meats, when they don’t even season the meat to begin with. I had the smoked wings and that’s all they were. No seasoning and no LOVE put into their food. And it was expensive for what they served. Maybe that’s why Gordon is doing the show there, to put some FLAVOR in the food.

I’ve been to both and enjoyed both. The service at Michon’s was a little slow, but for regular down-home food, it fit the bill. My grandfather and I always had a nice time when there. Could it be better? Yes….Does it deserve the beatdown that Ramsay will give it? Probably not. The same could be said for Park’s Edge….I’m looking forward to the so called “improvements”

Michon’s is a great choice for local publicity. However, I agree, They do not deserve some of the harshness of Chef Ramsey. I dont think they will qualify for a “Kitchen Nightmare”. I have been going there for several years… yes the service is sometimes slow… But I’d rather have that come with my GOOD FOOD!…. Wow..!!! Their SMOKED WINGS are to die for!

TO: CHEF RAMSEY… DO NOT CUSS THEM OUT! THEY ARE GOOD PEOPLE WITH GOOD FOOD!

Congrats to Michon’s! and GOOD LUCK!

Again, the restaurants in Atlanta are way below average compared to other metro cities. Even Birmingham, AL kills Atlanta when it comes to quasi fine dining experiences. Bottom line, you are all a bunch of COWS and Gordon can’t fix this city. AJC, give Gordon my e-mail address and I’ll take him to Greenwood’s. Oh yeah, I forgot. You are a bunch of COWS.

Good, now maybe Michon’s will be able to pay back the city of College Park the loan of over 150 thousand dollars they got from the tax payers to open up that location after they were kicked out of every city down the length of Virginia Av

We went tonight to Park’s Edge for the first night of filming. Food = way disappointing, overpriced; mistakes were made throughout the evening, not only at our table, but at 3 tables next to us! Ramsay’s got his work cut out for him at Park’s Edge. Gordon Ramsay was not even on the premises on this night. We were bamboozled. What a shame.

Went to the filming at Parks Edge on Saturday night 9/10/2011. Saw G. Ramsay. He spoke to us when we were seated at our table. He just said “Good F…..g Luck!” I thought it was funny. Wasn’t sure what to think until we were served. The Flash Fried Oysters were tasteless, The steaks were bad. Either raw or overcooked. Bad sauce on the steaks. We sent three entrees back twice. Never got it right, so didn’t even get the three entrees. Ordered two desserts, Apple Crisp and Choc. Cake. The only thing good out of two appetizers, five entrees, and two desserts was the Sea Bass and the Choc. cake. Mashed potatoes were horrible. Wish we could try the food when G. Ramsay cooked or showed the how to do it. May give it one more shot to see if they learned anything from him. If not, won’t eat there ever again. Overpriced and tasteless!!! Had to ask for salt and pepper at the table and still tasteless.
