Oprah Winfrey is set to appear at the Georgia World Congress Center all-day event called “O You!” October 15.

This is one of those days packed with panels and workshops featuring Oprah proteges such as Gayle King, Suze Orman, Dr. Oz and Nate Berkus. Originally announced in May, this event did not mention Oprah as a speaker at the time. Today’s news of Oprah’s presence should help fuel ticket sales. The itinerary for the day is here.

“Our readers love getting up-close and personal with the O experts they connect to in the magazine,” said Jill Seelig, vp/publisher of O, The Oprah Magazine, in the press release. “When Oprah herself participates, it takes O You to the next level adding an extra layer of magic and excitement

Tickets are $125 apiece. You can buy them here at www.oyouonline.com.

Kristin Klingshirn, who goes by “Kentucky Kristin” on a top 40 station in Raleigh, N.C., will join the Q100 Bert Show August 8.

Bert Weiss, the host of the show, said not to characterize her as a “replacement” for Melissa Carter, the long-time member of the show who left on her own accord in April. (Carter, after 15 years at 99X and Q100, hasn’t decided what she wants to do next but is enjoying her time off.)

“This is a new co-host of the Bert Show,” Weiss said on the air. “I’m hoping you will keep your hearts and minds open. She’s nothing like Melissa. If you are expecting a lesbian newscaster, you’ll be disappointed.”

“She likes boys and her kidneys work,” added jokester Jeff Dauler, referencing Carter’s kidney transplant eight years ago.

Emmy nominee Julie Bowen (’Modern Family’) helps out Adamsville Recreation Center & Maxwell House

Maxwell House, like any good corporation, gives money to good causes. It then publicizes said good causes in hope that this makes people think warm and fuzzy thoughts when they are going down the supermarket aisle and consider buying Maxwell House coffee. To help draw media attention, it helps to hire a celebrity. That’s a basic, reliably useful formula.

In this case, the coffee giant uses Julie Bowen (right) as its national spokeswoman.

The actress, whose had regular gigs on NBC’s “Ed” and ABC’s “Boston Legal” (plus a notable guest role on “Lost”), is now an Emmy-nominated star on the hilarious ABC sitcom “Modern Family.” The show is so well liked and so well established after just two seasons, I expect she’ll be playing the neurotically harried yet fun-loving Claire on the show for many years to come.

Her presence in Atlanta convinced me and three TV stations to stop …

After last year’s impressive array of talent, this first half of the 48 has been exceedingly disappointing. Last week was weak. This week was not any better. The only truly memorable act came at the end.

Two factors hurt many of these acts. This is the first time we are watching them live. Some wilted under the big spotlight. For a few acts, especially …

I just got back from a charity event at the W Hotel in Midtown hosted by the newest “Real Housewives of Atlanta” cast member Marlo Hampton.

Hampton, a 35-year-old Atlanta resident who moved here from Florida eight years ago, herself wouldn’t confirm whether she was “officially” a housewife but based on the publicity material provided for the event, she is.

The event is called “Glam It Up!” according to the publicist’s note. It’s an initiative created by Hampton, who is described as “entrepreneur, stylist, TV personality and philanthropist.” The purpose: “focus on rebuilding the road to self-empowerment in young ladies 13-17 in the Atlanta area.” She is a product of the foster-care system, the release said. During the day, she provided tips on “healthy eating, dressing for success, grooming, etiquette and self-esteem with 25 girls.”

Yo, bro, Pauly Shore is still very much alive, coming to the Punchline July 20

Pauly Shore’s movie career is long dead but Pauly Shore himself? At age 43, he’s still very much alive, his 2003 mockumentary “Pauly Shore is Dead” notwithstanding.

He’s primarily doing stand-up for a living, with occasional Showtime specials thrown in for good measure. “I’m very fortunate I can go on the road and people still want to see me,” he said, 15 years after “Bio-Dome.” “I never really went away. They took the movies away from me. But they didn’t take me away from me.”

Shore, who is going to do a single show at the Punchline Wednesday July 20, said he went through cycles of anger and resentment over capricious Hollywood more than a decade ago. But now he says he looks at his life as a cup half full, not half empty. “I don’t compare myself to others in the business,” he said. “I look at what I have compared to what I don’t have.”

The comic talked to me while in Daytona Beach, Fla., which brought him back two decades to his days with MTV and covering …

Fox 5’s “Good Day Atlanta,” which now airs nonstop from 4:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., is getting a line-up makeover at least through the summer.

To give WAGA-TV’s reliably hard-working Mark Hayes more time to do reporting, he will now be anchoring only from 5 to 7 a.m. (He had previously been doing a bulk of anchoring work from 4:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. with only a short break.) Hayes has worked with “Good Day Atlanta” since 2002 when he teamed with Suchita Vadlamani. She left last December and I have heard nothing about her future plans.

Karen Graham will continue to helm the 9 a.m. hour but will also take over 4:30 a.m. for Hayes. She’s been with Fox 5 for more than a decade.

Shawn & Marlon Wayans headlining Uptown Comedy Corner July 19-21

From “In Living Color” and “The Wayans Brothers” to “Scary Movie” and “White Chicks,” Shawn and Marlon Wayans have been inseparable as brothers.

But the two youngest Wayans brothers are hardly twins. Shawn has been doing stand-up comedy for more than 20 years. Marlon just started recently in preparation for a possible movie role as Richard Pryor.

Marlon will open for Shawn at the Uptown Comedy Corner July 19 to 21.

I spoke with both on the phone last week.

“We heard it’s a great room,” Shawn said. “I’ve been there a long time ago with Damon [probably in the old space in Buckhead.] We’ll show up where there’s a mic stand and a good, classy audience. That’s a perfect size room.”

Shawn noted that it’s tougher to work rooms and fail because of mobile media. “There was a time where people let art be art,” he said. “People now  bring cameras into comedy clubs. You used to be able to go to little clubs and talk [crap.] Nowadays, you can’t do that. You’re always under …

VH1’s Atlanta-based “Single Ladies” renewed for second season

Single LadiesJust a few days after MTV’s “Teen Wolf” was renewed for a second season, another Atlanta-based scripted show “Single Ladies” on VH1 gets the same nod.

“Single Ladies” has shown impressively consistent ratings since its debut May 30, drawing 1.8 million to 1.9 million every week.  For VH1, which has struggled to come up with a big shows since the days of “Flavor of Love,” those are hit numbers.

According to Variety magazine, the show will be back in Atlanta later this year, with season 2 slated for 2012.

The show stars Stacey Dash, LisaRaye McCoy and Charity Shea as single ladies in Atlanta.

“It’s a hard thing to get television right and have a successful television show,” said Alex Motlagh, one of the executive producers. “It’s really exciting. We’re grateful and happy it’s received the reaction it has had from the audience and promotes Atlanta as well. We’re stoked.”

This was VH1’s first attempt at a scripted one-hour drama.

The number of scripted TV shows shot in Atlanta …

TV best bets with returns of ‘Hell’s Kitchen,’ ‘Entourage,’ ‘Top Gear’

entourage-season-8-airs-july-24

It’s a world where someone is nicknamed Turtle, “AquaMan” was a huge hit and a biopic of Pablo Escobar wasn’t. HBO’s “Entourage” starts its eighth and final season Sunday. Vince, fresh out of rehab, is back with his buddies and seeking a comeback while Ari struggles with his personal life. Welcome back, guys, even for just a little while longer.

And speaking of Escobar, the late Colombian drug lord actually kept wild hippos. Animal Planet checks up on them 18 years after his death. And you have to love the TV title: “Drug Kingpin Hippos.” It sounds like a childhood game gone amuck and it airs Tuesday .

Fox’s “Hell’s Kitchen” is back Monday for a ninth time and after previewing it, I have to say: it’s the same ol’ same ol’ if you’re into that sort of thing. History’s “Top Gear”? It’s back, too, trying to pick up after a disappointing first season, ratings wise.
