"The Mo'Nique Show" axed

Earlier today, I heard that “The Mo’Nique Show” had been axed. I had sent an email out to various BET publicists to ask what was up. No word back.

At about 1:30 p.m., I called Rodney Perry, who was Mo’Nique’s sidekick on the show. He said he was running into a meeting and didn’t answer my question. While I was at lunch over at the mall court, at 1:40 p.m. EST, he texted me: “I was told indefinite hiatus.”

That’s a euphemism for canceled.

[UPDATE: At 3:40 p.m., I received an email from a spokesperson at BET which included a slightly milder euphemism: "The Mo'Nique Show will be on production hiatus beginning in the fall." ... Mo'Nique Hicks and The Mo'Nique Show are important to the BET Networks family and we look forward to continuing our relationship our with her."]

In an interview I did at 2:40 p.m., the stand-up comic said he enjoyed the experience working with Mo’Nique. “I’m selling out shows now,” he said. “That’s a win.” He heard the news from Mo’Nique’s husband but hasn’t spoken to the Oscar-winning actress yet. (He wouldn’t say when he knew about this, implying he has known for awhile.)

“We did some good work,” Perry said. “And I think the show is significant. There hasn’t been an outlet for people of color late night since Arsenio.”

The talk show, which Mo’Nique compared to a high-energy nightly party, lasted two seasons and had been taped in Turner Studios, which are now being used for BET’s show “Reed Between the Lines” through October. When I heard that earlier today, I wondered if that meant “Mo’Nique” was not coming back or had been moved to another studio. If her show were coming back, she would be taping by August. (Like many shows, it does not tape original episodes during the summer.)

This didn’t appear to be an issue of ratings. I didn’t have time to do an entire season’s check on ratings so I sampled four weeks in April, 2011 vs. April 2010. Ratings from April 5 to April 29, 2010 averaged 615,000 viewers a night. From April 4 to April 28, 2011, her show averaged 586,000. That’s only a five percent drop.

Mediatakeout, which broke the story, said there were conflicts between BET management and Mo’Nique. Was it creative and/or financial? The story does not say. It also doesn’t say if BET will seek another talk-show host or just drop the concept.

Perry isn’t sure why the show was cut but thinks it might have been a financial decision. “They haven’t had this type of investment ever,” he said. “We did 300 shows over two seasons. That’s a huge investment.”

I didn’t care much for Mo’Nique’s over-the-top home-girl persona but Perry’s comment is right on target. The show did service an audience and those interested in the celebrities, acts and issues Mo’Nique featured on the program. Many of the guests would not have major exposure, in a positive setting, otherwise. My hope is that BET doesn’t replace her show with more “reality” trash.

I thought the show always had great guest and entertainment; however Mo was not a good interviewer. Her questions, or lack there of…left me wanting more. Now speaking of a great interviewer, Wendy Williams always gets the good info.

I was not that fond of her as a host. However, I appreciated some of the guests that she had on. In the end, I could take or leave it and most often, forgot that it was on. Besides, at that time of night, even fewer of my brain cells are functioning as I am winding down for bed time.

I don’t suscribe to racist comments but yours was very blantant! I don’t watch BET but Outkasted is right, its a disproportionate number of stations for your WET. SO SAD that you don’t get it, Matt. I pity you for making such a comment.

It’s time for “Mo” to re-invent herself. Loud, brash, over-the-top, ghetto-fabulous, angry black woman sooo last year. This may be a blessing in disguise….provides time for reflection. Carry on y’all!

I worked with Mo when she was just doing stand up at “Uptown Comedy” She’s a really nice person, and good comedian. Now as far as talk host go, I’m not so sure. However some of your dumb comments on this board never stop amazing. Any chance to get a low blow in. Pull up ya collar ’cause ya red neck is showing.

I am shocked. This show is needed on Network TV. Could Mo’Nique take her show to TV One, Africa Channel (L.A. Based) or Centric; aren’t they black owned?

Why are black people allowing the white owned mega corporations to buy out their businesses? Do they not care about their communities?

Half of the people commenting, I can tell, didnt even watch the show. The talk show was vastly different from her stand up act and sitcom (The Parkers) and was surprisingly good. The topics of her shows were interesting and she had a wide array of guests.

I would say the problem is with the revenue and advertisers. More black people should have bought products that advertised on the show. People will not pay if they lose money. I have watched the show and it was not a good one. I loved Arsenio. But both got a little racy (not racist) but racy at times. Some people just do not like that. I think it showed who the audience was and that unless you sell something for that paticular audience, you will not support the show. Just like you need to advertise beer, and beef jerky for NASCAR>

As much as I didn’t care for the show, it connected with a LOT of people. So for some of you who were just salivating to see the end of the show, here you go…. But I have the feeling that even if her show lasted 25 years, you’d all still be waiting to say how much you hated it. So, just because I didn’t like it, I didn’t bad mouth it either. It had it’s place and actually from reading the story by Rodney Ho, it appears it wasn’t a ratings issue. This is the kind of thing that is one of the main ingredients to a show that “shows” back up on another network. So, haters…. sit down somewhere!!!

Although I am a fan of her comedy, I was not a fan of the show. She was way too loud. I could never get through her opening segment. I’m sure she will be just fine though. She is a great comedian and one heck of an actress.

Like I said, Arsenio had as guests; Eddie Murphy, Madonna, Ice T and even Michael Jackson. Many A list celebrities. He had great ratings but his A.D.I (area of dominate influence) also know as the demographic that he targeted DID NOT support his advertisers. If advertising on a show doesn’t produce added revenue then advertisers pull out. Simply put..some people just dont tip.

Well, Jay, I did watch, and I got tired of the Ok baby, show what you got, baby this sugar that. She was not good at it. It takes a unique (not Mo Nique) talent. Oprah had it. Conan, does not, Jay Leno sometimes has it, Jimmy Kimmel does not. And Letterman needs to retire. He has not had it for a long time. Lopez is a baffoon and needs to go also.

BET is losing viewers

July 27th, 2011
4:20 pm

Monique was fun. The only reason I stopped watching her show as well as Conan is because there was too much competition for that hour.. With George Lopez’s ratings dropping daily, Oprah choosing cable and Wendy barely hanging on the daytime and late night talk show format blaringly lacks racial diversity and youth which is desperately needed. Anderson, Katie, Bethenny, Jeff I wish you all luck in the talk show arena but I doubt I will be a regular viewer of any of your daytime talk shows. I wish American corporations would feature the racial diversity in broadcast media that is needed in national news and talk shows. Oprah has the power, money and influence to do so but she still refuses to acknowledge the lack of racial diversity in the roles that matter in media. I think Monique should try to get her “friend” Oprah to pick up her talk show and air it on OWN. Maybe then more people will tune in to that network.
