"The Mo'Nique Show" axed

Loading ... Loading ...

Earlier today, I heard that “The Mo’Nique Show” had been axed. I had sent an email out to various BET publicists to ask what was up. No word back.

At about 1:30 p.m., I called Rodney Perry, who was Mo’Nique’s sidekick on the show. He said he was running into a meeting and didn’t answer my question. While I was at lunch over at the mall court, at 1:40 p.m. EST, he texted me: “I was told indefinite hiatus.”

That’s a euphemism for canceled.

[UPDATE: At 3:40 p.m., I received an email from a spokesperson at BET which included a slightly milder euphemism: "The Mo'Nique Show will be on production hiatus beginning in the fall." ... Mo'Nique Hicks and The Mo'Nique Show are important to the BET Networks family and we look forward to continuing our relationship our with her."]

In an interview I did at 2:40 p.m., the stand-up comic said he enjoyed the experience working with Mo’Nique. “I’m selling out shows now,” he said. “That’s a win.” He heard the news from Mo’Nique’s husband but hasn’t spoken to the Oscar-winning actress yet. (He wouldn’t say when he knew about this, implying he has known for awhile.)

“We did some good work,” Perry said. “And I think the show is significant. There hasn’t been an outlet for people of color late night since Arsenio.”

The talk show, which Mo’Nique compared to a high-energy nightly party, lasted two seasons and had been taped in Turner Studios, which are now being used for BET’s show “Reed Between the Lines” through October. When I heard that earlier today, I wondered if that meant “Mo’Nique” was not coming back or had been moved to another studio. If her show were coming back, she would be taping by August. (Like many shows, it does not tape original episodes during the summer.)

This didn’t appear to be an issue of ratings. I didn’t have time to do an entire season’s check on ratings so I sampled four weeks in April, 2011 vs. April 2010. Ratings from April 5 to April 29, 2010 averaged 615,000 viewers a night. From April 4 to April 28, 2011, her show averaged 586,000. That’s only a five percent drop.

Mediatakeout, which broke the story, said there were conflicts between BET management and Mo’Nique. Was it creative and/or financial? The story does not say. It also doesn’t say if BET will seek another talk-show host or just drop the concept.

Perry isn’t sure why the show was cut but thinks it might have been a financial decision. “They haven’t had this type of investment ever,” he said. “We did 300 shows over two seasons. That’s a huge investment.”

I didn’t care much for Mo’Nique’s over-the-top home-girl persona but Perry’s comment is right on target. The show did service an audience and those interested in the celebrities, acts and issues Mo’Nique featured on the program. Many of the guests would not have major exposure, in a positive setting, otherwise. My hope is that BET doesn’t replace her show with more “reality” trash.

I thought the show always had great guest and entertainment; however Mo was not a good interviewer. Her questions, or lack there of…left me wanting more. Now speaking of a great interviewer, Wendy Williams always gets the good info.

I was not that fond of her as a host. However, I appreciated some of the guests that she had on. In the end, I could take or leave it and most often, forgot that it was on. Besides, at that time of night, even fewer of my brain cells are functioning as I am winding down for bed time.

I am shocked. This show is needed on Network TV. Could Mo’Nique take her show to TV One, Africa Channel (L.A. Based) or Centric; aren’t they black owned?

Why are black people allowing the white owned mega corporations to buy out their businesses? Do they not care about their communities?

I would say the problem is with the revenue and advertisers. More black people should have bought products that advertised on the show. People will not pay if they lose money. I have watched the show and it was not a good one. I loved Arsenio. But both got a little racy (not racist) but racy at times. Some people just do not like that. I think it showed who the audience was and that unless you sell something for that paticular audience, you will not support the show. Just like you need to advertise beer, and beef jerky for NASCAR>

As much as I didn’t care for the show, it connected with a LOT of people. So for some of you who were just salivating to see the end of the show, here you go…. But I have the feeling that even if her show lasted 25 years, you’d all still be waiting to say how much you hated it. So, just because I didn’t like it, I didn’t bad mouth it either. It had it’s place and actually from reading the story by Rodney Ho, it appears it wasn’t a ratings issue. This is the kind of thing that is one of the main ingredients to a show that “shows” back up on another network. So, haters…. sit down somewhere!!!

Like I said, Arsenio had as guests; Eddie Murphy, Madonna, Ice T and even Michael Jackson. Many A list celebrities. He had great ratings but his A.D.I (area of dominate influence) also know as the demographic that he targeted DID NOT support his advertisers. If advertising on a show doesn’t produce added revenue then advertisers pull out. Simply put..some people just dont tip.

Well, Jay, I did watch, and I got tired of the Ok baby, show what you got, baby this sugar that. She was not good at it. It takes a unique (not Mo Nique) talent. Oprah had it. BET is losing viewers

July 27th, 2011
4:20 pm

Monique was fun. The only reason I stopped watching her show as well as Conan is because there was too much competition for that hour.. With George Lopez’s ratings dropping daily, Oprah choosing cable and Wendy barely hanging on the daytime and late night talk show format blaringly lacks racial diversity and youth which is desperately needed. Anderson, Katie, Bethenny, Jeff I wish you all luck in the talk show arena but I doubt I will be a regular viewer of any of your daytime talk shows. I wish American corporations would feature the racial diversity in broadcast media that is needed in national news and talk shows. Oprah has the power, money and influence to do so but she still refuses to acknowledge the lack of racial diversity in the roles that matter in media. I think Monique should try to get her “friend” Oprah to pick up her talk show and air it on OWN. Maybe then more people will tune in to that network.

@Rodney King, @Outkasted,@everyone (hate i have to go here) but I’m black and there was absolutely NOTHING wrong with Matt’s comment. I AGREE with him and those comments were not racist. Racist is when you think that your race is superior to any other and you cannot draw that he believes that based on that comment. What I hear is a person who is fed up with the double standard and realized that actually many blacks have become the new racists. You have to realize the framework and time in which BET was formed and even then they shouldn’t have named it BET. Martin Luther King dreamed that sons of former slaves and sons of former slave owners would sit down at the table of brotherhood, be completely integrated. Not become free and recreate for themselves (segregation)what had been dissolved. http://www.campaignofone.com- check it out. The network should re-brand and change the name. This is a new day and ask yourself what is “Black” Enterainment Television? Does that mean it is only for blacks? I have made the same argument as Matt time and time again b/c if there were a WET “White” Entertainment Television, most blacks would go running and screaming to the NAACP and and whoever else that you feel represents you. See BET, in its’ entirety does not represent the views, lifestyle, culture and perception of all blacks. So, please strongly reconsider referring to it or percieving it as “our station.” (especially for the guy who mentioned 1 out of 300) I do not have any shares (or majority share) in BET anymore than I do FOX, therefore they are not “my” stations. There’s no “white stations” or “black stations. They are stations that have a target audience, regardless of color.

I personally have never liked Mo’Nique, it did not matter if she had a late night show. It still didn’t make her a nicer person. She lost my respect when she was in comedy. Im just as open minded as the next but when you constantly here the same insults over and over and over- first impressions seem to have a hard time leaving anothers mind. If she was a nice person her profession %#@&*! that up. I’m sorry she dosen’t have her show if it was a financal need for her and her family(which I’m not seeing that with my own eyes.) Ceez, please stop. Whites don’t have to name anything White entertainment “anymore”. There used to be a White sign for everything from drinking water to restaurants to restrooms. There are some places in this country that still do that. Tell me that Conan, Letterman or Leno are trying to reach a Black audience and they’ll tell you no. But just like BET if they reach an audience of a different race, they’ll be cool with it too. BET was NOT born from a whim. It was relevent when it was created and it is still relevent. She stepped out on faith and tried something new. Good job Mo’Nique. It’s so sad that race plays a role in every event or situations in America (President Obama, even the Mo’Nique show). It would have been smart to just let Trailerpark or MattGrant Park have his opinion without firing back. Maybe not so nice of me, (sorry) but we are better people than we act. You know when things like this happen, GOD got something else he got for you to do. Just like Tyler Perry said, Hollywood wanted him to do his dream their way, and that didn’t work for him too long so he bought his own outfit and is doing things the way he wants to do them. Monique is too real for most people and instead of people honoring the person she is, they want to put her in a negative light. Well, guess what? She got enough talent and talented friends to go and run her own S—-! Don’t even sweat it Monique or Rodney, because I believe in my heart that they sought you guys out, you didn’t go getting at them with your tongues hanging out, begging for nothing. maybe it’s not, as it looks funny that way, but I hate to see canceled & Monique in the same sentence. She was actively trying to make a difference and bring the ol school family dynamic to the show which no one does any more. Monique’s heart was in the right place, guess her rating werent.

She should talk to Oxygen or another subsidiary who will pick her up as there is a market for her product as her concept is viable.

What’s up Rodney? Let’s be frank, Mo’nique got fired by BET Executives for her big mouth, arrogance and demand for a new contract, despite a large viewership and a thirst for late night entertainment. In fact, Mo’nique’s show was brutal for the eyes and ears, and lacked creativity, leading to many dissatified viewers. As a BET Cable Subscriber, I was turned off too. Mo’nique was not the answer, and BET Executives knew it too. As a comedian, Mo’nique should have done a 1-hour BET/HBO Comedy Special and call it the day. Nice try, but a change was dearly needed for the best interest of all parties, including the viewers.

I would have supported the show til the end but for one reason. I prayed that she would not not come out screaming every night. It was so unnecessary. She had the opportunity to be something great with her show and she took it another level. There is no way her people could not hear the same complaints over and over again.; She is too loud. This is late night. It’s time to get quiet not a lot of screaming. I for one am glad to see it go and I stopped watching after the second or third show..

I loved the Monique Show. I am actually surprised at a lot of the negative comments that I am reading. The show was very conscience and gave black people a chance to see other black people on a national level, and talk about things that concerned us. The question now is: Without the Monique Show what truly black conscience show is on national TV now? She needs to be paid more money and the show needs to be properly financed. I do not know the reasons for the disagreement, but I believe it boils down to those two things, and that is a travesty. Monique was not afraid. She would call black, black and white, white and I guess ultimately when whites (Viacom) own the station that could “unjustifiably” get your show axed. Now, that’s the real.

Shut up and give support where needed. Now you will be bitchin because there is not enough of us on TV. What the hell. If you think you can do better and survive the BS that comes with being a black entertainer in the business go for it. I see why some blacks sell out. Look at Oprah (billionaire). It wasn’t because of support from blacks. I am disappointed. Good Luck Mo.

I love Mo’Nique but a late night talk show was not a good look. It was a good show. I liked the platform. But Mo’Nique lack interview skills and she couldn’t fill the void that Arenso left. She had some great guests. I want to see her do more acting. She surprised everybody with her dramatic performance in Precious. Now that she got an oscar. she should use it to get better roles.

I want Bet canceled the show because they want to produce more original television series. If they do another talk show, I want Steve Harvey to host. And Steve wouldn’t need no co-host like Mo’Nique. And Bet should give Mo’Nique her own sitcom. The Parkers was the only sitcom that starred in. Who want Mo’Nique to have another tv show?

Why are people so hard on Monique? She didn’t hold BET at gunpoint and make them put her on TV, she was hired by them because of who she is and her celebrity. I was never a big fan of the show but I always smiled when I saw that it was on TV. And as for WET, white people act as if the government funded BET. Robert Johnson came up with an innovative concept that black people to gravitate to because it is interesting to them. So either the problem is that no white person has been innovative enough to come up with such programming…or white people just aren’t that interesting. I opt for the latter.

The cancellation reason was financial and the fact her husmanager is a “Nut”. Back when Mo’Nique won the oscar Time wanted to feature her on the cover and the husmanager wanted a guarantee that she would be bumped from the cover in the event of a larger story including a world disaster, death of a head of state or a financial crash etc. Plus some other weird unreal things. The Time execs told him to take a walk. A clear lost for Mo’Nique. She also would not participate in the pre-oscar luncheon prior to her winning the award. Again terrible move on her husband’s part. Needless to say this isn’t racist. BET cancelled her show which is a black network. Can’t claim racist move unless we are talking light-skined v/s dark-skined. People come on love one another regardless of color or network watched.

Haters..The Mo’nique Show is a great late show. Even though she started out loud, she calmed it down a bit. Her interview skills were okay. At least she was not annoying and full of Gossip like Wendy Williams. Mo’nique brought to her show black entertainers that have been forgotten, and never known by the black audience. She brought black entertainers that we wondered what ever happened to them, and what are they doing now. She brought to her show unknown black entertainers. She had a good run, did a great job, and I don’t think its over for her yet. She was no Oprah, because Oprah pushed through the other persuasion, Mo’nique is for her people. And folks are angry about that. Mo’nique wanted the black heritage to be known by all. Keep your head up Mo’nique you represented your black family well.

Stop………Mo was everything that an Oscar winning actress and please don’t make me repeat that (Oscar winning actress: couldn’t help myself), as well as a very incredible stand-up comedian/mogul, who has been doing the damn thing for some time; should be, while venturing into the talk show arena. It’s brutal and I don’t think Mo went in thinking that she was going to be Oprah or as big or popular but then again Oprah never thought she would be that big too. Many other celebrities whether they are the biggest players or small ones have ventured into the talk show circuit and it’s tough. I really enjoyed Mo’ being herself and believe it or not most people really enjoyed her. It was refreshing to have guest on a Black network and have the guests that don’t get a chance to express themselves for multiple reasons. Basically, she allowed her guest to not only be the rarest of the bunch but to talk about what they got going on and how we can either join the party or support some worthy cause. She had on Terry Kennedy and he is pretty big news in the skateboarding world. You have to remember that he isn’t getting the exposure and opportunity to be a household name say like Shaun White. Both of these guys are great but Terry is Black and Shaun is White (how fitting for his name). It seems that Terry is someone that other talkshow outlets should have swooped up because he is a very kind and generous human being, who just happens to be amazing and we can’t forget the extremely good looking part.
Mo’ would have her friends on in the business (show business friends) and people that she just didn’t admire or adore but people she developed close relationships within the walls of show. How many guest did she have on the show that were completely in awe of her for so many reasons. The best was Snoop (her co-star in Soul Plane) and he put his people (his team) on blast because he claimed they advised him against come on Mo’s show. He said there was no way he wasn’t coming to support his girl. Yes, she is everyone’s homegirl and I don’t think she was loud or rude but showing compassion and showing her softer side. Her personality looks big to others because she is a tall gal, who had some serious meat on her bones. Mo’ lost a serious amount of weight but she was completely fabulous and still will continue to be fabulous for ever. She conducted herself always with class but she made you feel like guest were her friends and she was now introducing to her friends. Please leave MO’ alone, she isn’t bothering any body.

MattGrant Park

american history 101:
the reason that there are things made especially for peoples of color, be it “black” entertainment tv or anything else, is because these peoples have been traditionally EXCLUDED from “mainstream” offerings. Everyone’s needs are not met when everyone has to look think and act the same (i.e., like white people or in a way that they are comfortable with), so people who realize this, create spaces and things that express or meet needs to go beyond the few that white people seem to think EVERYONE should have. Nothing is going to meet everyone’s needs and there is nothing wrong eith making SPECIFIC things. White don’t need anything made that says white on it because everything that we see is made BY OR FOR white people and their tastes are being met and expressed in and by the mainstream.

and black people can’t be “racist” unless they believe in and practice WHITE SUPREMACY, because that is the only functioning form of racism in the world today. anything else may be biogtry or prejudice and some of that is JUSTIFIED by the way we are treated by even the nicest white people, who condescend and look down their noses at everything about us. no one with good sense likes being treated that way.

Seriously?

Hello my Atlanta friends! I’m a dude from metro Washington DC. Prior to Mo’s nite show, which I’ll say was basically positive if not always that entertaining, she hosted a very popular and successful radio talk show here in DC. She’s from Baltimore, MD, only 40 miles up the road so some of her radio fan base was from Baltimore too. We loved her. But sadly SHE QUIT THIS POPULAR SHOW SUDDENLY AND ABRUPTLY WITH NO PARTING THANKYOUs AND APPRECIATION FROM HER DC FAN BASE!! I’m like “what the h#^( !! How could she do this to folks that supported and loved her! It’s ok that she moved on to what she thought was bigger and better things but leaving her fans hanging like this was absolutely classless. So I loose my class now and say to her — Ha! you fool. Now you see how it feels to be unceremoniously DUMPED! And if you come back to the DC area with your tail between your legs like a pitiful dog to start your radio show again, you absolutely won’t be welcomed back without an apology and explanation that is owed to your fan based on this fiasco you orchestrated on DC fans!!

I tried to watch the show several times and I could not accept all the screaming and hollering. The LOUD noise cancelled ALL the good contents of the show. I kept checking back with the show thinking that they would tone down the noise.

I actually liked the Monique Show for her different artists and performances she had on there. She does lack interviewing skills and was loud at times, but she had good topics for having certain people on the show at the same time. I liked the show and I will miss it only for the music performances and for giving the spotlight to the different artists who are not mainstream or are under-rated in the media. I certainly appreciated her for giving them that attention and publicity. Now on to bigger and better things for Monique.

I found it hard to fight off the raging nausea on sight of this woman…not that i ever watch BET ( and yes…Im a man of color)…but BET as a whole has become a ghetto fabulous mockery of the Black experience..i guess thats how Viacom sees this market…Im giving BET another 5 yrs to fold…steadily losing its audience, ultra low content value, a clear and obvious disconnect with its market and a lack of advert dollars ought to do it in…sit and wait.

Love Mo,I think the show could have been done a whole lot better. I don’t know the control she had over the show but when I looked at it, seems like she was trying too hard; it wasn’t natural she didn’t have that flow. As someone else said she was too loud I don’t think that was necessary. But she came to Atl to do what she had to do. Done it so on to bigger and better things. I wish nothing but the best for her and everyone involved.

Thank the Lord! That was not a talk show. That was a “How black can you be?” show. Monique’s real talent lies in her comedy and, surprisingly, her acting. That’s where she thrives. She is not a good interviewer. There’s an art to it. Yep, she’ll bounce back. But in her own comfort zone. There are lots of roles and comedy tours waiting for her. Time for her to get back to doing what she does best.

Monqiue “tried” to appeal to a black office? Really. She’s black, she doesn’t have to “try”. Obviously the formatting was so the show would be something that black viewers watch because our interests are not represented on late night TV. It was a niche that could be filled.

SOmetimes she was loud, but she had REALLY good guests. SHe’s even had white folks on the show, so it wasn’t JUST a black show.

I just think Black folks need to get away from someone else’s std of what this or that “should” be. She made it her own. I am not a HUGE Monique fan but I didn’t think after the first few weeks, the show was as bad as some have said. She toned down a lot.

And those talking about advertisers not making money, the same commercials come on all day as does during Monqiue THUS, your logic would apply to the entire channel.

Let’s face it BET is owned by white folks and they don’t want anything competing with their other stations like VH1 and MTV which needs to be buried.

You see what they did to Ed Gordon’s show, while Washington Watch is running circles around any news programming BET has.

Monique’s show content was better that Wendy’s by far. An dboth are loud and big

I hear that Monique changed up while doing the movie Precious. She stopped being down to earth and got diva. Monique got really demanding. A lot of people weren’t having it. She already had been sued by a former employee of the show.
Believe me, certain people remember when you don’t do promos for the movie you are starring it (where they do that at?) and when you opt not to show at Oscars to present. Some people never learn the game until they get played.

I loved Mo’Nique and her show who brought on guest that Never get invited to the other Talk Shows. It was a good vehicle to shine! I didn’t care if she spoke loud or whatever seemed to bother some people. She is who she is and she is perfectly alright and talented. Doing what she did is not easy. As far as advertisers are concerned, Black folk are some of the biggest spenders but get no respect for their dollars. These advertisers act like we don’t buy their products, so maybe we should stop supporting them because they definitely don’t support us or our projects, functions, festivals, etc. In fact who is their future dollars going to come from since the white dollar and demographic is going flat. Black people need to stop being so critical of our artist out there and stand with them and write these advertisers to be careful how you treat us because the future is upon them. Black people realize your worth and your power and we should start with BET!

I enjoyed the guest stars but I do have to agree, Mo’Nique is not a great interviewer. Her baby this, sugar that was tiring and underscored that she wasn’t very polished or well spoken. However, as a comedian and actress, I love her and appreciate what her show did provide – an avenue where entertainers of color would have an accepted audience and venue where we, the fans, could see and hear more from them. I wish her the best. Maybe over the break she can/will tune up her interviewing skills and tweak a few things about the show. I think it had plenty of potential to be very good and I hope it comes back.

Sorry to hear that Monique’s show is being canceled.. Though I didn’t watch the show, because of her loudness, I still love her as a comedienne and an actress, and this definitely will not be the end for her. And to the white people ( and the white people in disguise), who feel that Blacks think they’re racist, because they have opposing views–you’re right. When you make comments like, take Oprah with you, and comments about Tyra Banks in the same sentence, what else is it? At least throw in a Chelsey Lately or someone else to throw us off. It just makes you sick when anything is labeled, as Black or see any Black person doing well, because that gives you more fodder to keep labeling us all as welfare recipients and thugs and gangsters, and I’m sick of it!

I cannot believe we are losing Monique. That was the best thing we have had since Arsenio Hall! We were able to see what our people, as well as others, were doing and what they are truly about. Yes, Monique did start off a little loud i the beginning because she was excited, but when she calmed down, she was GREAT! I have been watching her since the beginning and still love her show. I just hope someone has the sense to pick her back up, like Cathy Hughes on TV One. Or even a regular broadcast channel. This is going to be a HUGE lost to viewers. I have no doubt that she will be back on-air because, regardless to what the poll’s are showing at this time – WAY TOO MANY PEOPLE LOVE THAT SHOW! Once everyone hears about this, there is going to be a Monique Rally to get her back on! I like Wendi Williams, as well, but Monique wasn’t about getting gossip on people; she was about showing the positiveness of people. BET, I’m surprised at you; but your loss is going to be someone else’s gain. BET had such a good thing going with The Game, Let’s Get Married, and Monique. Please, Get it together~

Why so much hate? I’m appalled at all the hate messages about The Monique Show. For one, she showed so much love to all the black guest — and the white guest, too — that appeared on her show. I’ve never seen so much love coming from a talk show host(with exception to Oprah, of course).
At the same time, I’m not surprised that BET axed her show, though. I thought it would have been sooner because they have a history of getting rid of good shows. As soon as Monique won that Oscar, I knew that when jubilee cooled down, Monique’s days of having her own talk show on BET were numbered.

When I visited the show as the first season was starting, everyone was cool, though I was only able to talk to Mo’Nique by phone. While I was there, she was not available to talk. I understand that. She’s busy. Last year, I did a piece on Rodney Perry and visited again. This is what happened then and left me with a bit of a sour taste in my mouth (I’m simply copying and pasting from my blog entry last year):

I would have added more from the day I spent at a taping last Tuesday at Turner Studios (George Wallace was a guest, Vernon Jones was in the audience) but minutes after I started Tweeting about it, production manager Tony Strickland came running into the green room in a total panic. Apparently, some folks at the show get my Tweets. He told me sternly that I wasn’t supposed to do that although I told him nobody had given me any warning. But he acted as if I were committing a federal offense or possibly wielding a weapon. He was pretty peeved. I figured one false word and he’d have booted me from the premises. So I cooperated. In fact, he demanded I delete my Tweets and my notes from the show. He even made sure a lower-level employee watched me do so since he had to go back to running the actual show. I was planning to interview show producers about Perry for this story but given the elevated level of paranoia, I decided to skip it. (Things were a lot looser a year ago when I visited the set before the show debuted. Times change!)

I did not like the Mo’Nique show. She was too loud, and uneducated. Atlanta is an educated city, and I am afraid she didn’t appeal to a lot of the viewers. One thing I noticed was that the audience didn’t clap as loud as they did on Oprah, they just sat there like nothing had happened or been said of interest. Arsenio lost his show because he allowed Louis Farakhan to appear against the wishes of many important people. He wanted to let everyone know that was his show and he could do what he wanted, but he found out that he was not the boss. BET is owned by white people not Blacks. I think it was sold years ago to Sony, for a big sum of money when it was real popular. Oprah will not pick up The Monique Show. All the shows that Oprah has on her network, appeal to mixed races, mainly white people who made her rich.

We cannot let this happen! This was a great venue for showcasing our people in a positive manner! As another person mentioned earlier, WE need to start standing up for US because others are continually putting us down, no matter what we do; but they stand up for their own races. WE are the only ones who don’t stand up for each other! Let’s appreciate and support what each other are doing instead of criticizing. I think Monique was doing a wonderful job of portraying Blacks. Once her show is gone, we won’t be represented this way. Wendy Williams don’t portray us in a positive way, even though I like her show; but if I had to choose between the two, it would be Monique! Outside of Monique, Ellen is the only one who will portray Blacks in a positive manner; but not like Monique. I have gained a lot of additional respect for many people, after watching her show. This is 2011 and a lot has changed. Let’s change how we uphold our people and do better. Let’s not be the only race who tears each other down. WE must do what we have to do and get that show back. I can’t believe BET let us down like this. Please contact TV One, OWN, Centric or whoever, but let’s pull together and make this happen~

Test Tube Tommy must really have something against Monique or black people becuase he can not stop commenting in here about us. I honestly wish we could go back to the days before BET TVOne and Centric just as a reminder and see how it was then. I wish we could get that taste back so we could see what it is like to be disrepected and disregarded as a people in the entertainment industry again. To see what it is like to NEVER see anyone of color represented on the TV and if so it is once every blue mooon. For YEARS/DECADES we complained about this and BET gave it to us. Now has it gotten away from what it once was? Yes but lets not forget the fact that without channels like BET or TVOne or Centric we would not be represented on TV or in Movies like we should be. Once it was realized that we can do it on our own and put our own talent out for the world to see then the rest of the entertainment industry took notice, but it was not until then. We are quick to jump on those that create their own lane and make way for people that would otherwise have no opportunity to make it in the entertainment business (Tyler Perry and his actors/actresses) but when they don’t exist we complain about how we are not represented on TV. Sometimes I wish we could take a step back for a reminder just to see what it was like before. I think we need that reminder sometimes becuase it seems we have forgotten. We do not have to be like white America, we can be ourselves. Was Monique loud at times? Yes, but she was not loud throughout the ENTIRE show and anyone that really watched it knows this. Other than Moniue when was the last time we had a late night TV show hosted by someone black that was not on HBO? Oh yeah Arsenio Hall. Yeah so lets not forget. We are not wanted on TV, mainstream america STILL is not comfortable putting us live on TV. Let us not forget that fact although I am sure that most of us have.

The one time I happened to watch the show Antoine Dodson was a guest. Mo’Nique kept inquiring about the status of the rape investigation of his sister. You could tell he could care less about that. They both came off looking dumb (Dodson for the obvious reasons and Mo’Nique because she was interviewing him like he had just brokered a Mideast Peace Treaty). She also kept referring to him as a “success” which was even more annoying (and disrespectful to people who have actually done noteworthy things).

I never watched the show again.

@Rob @Outkasted @Nat Turner-
Rob- I’m aware of what used to be in this country and still is in “some” parts. However, we have to forgive the past and let it go. Our ancestors paid too great of a price/sacrifice for me/us to do anything otherwise. I was not implying that BET was born on a whim nor that it was irrelevant then or now. I said it should have never been named BET. BET is known “primarily” for what? music videos? Music videos/content that contains primarily what? Sex, drugs, and money. I’m sorry that does not represent me or an entire race therefore it should not be “Black” Entertainment Television. It is still a media outlet that is resourceful to black people, but should be re-branded. Sir, I have no contempt for my own kind. I just have no problem giving an honest criticism… “for my own kind.”

@outkasted- He did not say there aren’t any shows geared toward him/his race. He was implying that the name BET is obviously inflammatory/offensive to some whites and I can see how. Regardless of how many colored water fountains there used to be, regardless of how much land and culture was taken, how much wealthier they are, you must forgive and let go. It’s a new day and you are the catalyst for realizing your own dreams. I can’t worry about the past man. Also, being black does validate my opinion, but not b/c i need to “prove” anything to you, but to let people (black/white/asian/hispanic..) know what other blacks of a different opinion have to say on the issue. (let’s discuss, all that kick rocks stuff is not necessary… lets keep it simple)

@Nat Turner- I love the diversity here too. Love it here period…all my life. I feel we’re getting there especially with the new generation coming. I just don’t want my generation and the one after to be stuck on emphasizing the message of civil right and highlighting disproportions. That was the previous generation’s assignment. Our assignment is different, we have to take action in a different way. Go out and achieve, acquire and attain what it is that the previous generation paid for (with their lives) for us to have. If there are not enough media outlets for blacks, go out and create some! Accumulate wealth through buying land, houses. Build productive families.. Teach the next generation!

Monique Is very good at her job.She asked question that she would want others to ask her about her personal life .It’s all respecting her peers.,Remember she have worked with alot of people and some are her friends that she respect. If you put your peers or best bud on the spot she or he may go off on you.So get off Monique and pray. Everyone hear needs prayer cause this isn’t judement day just another black show gone down the drain like Girlfriends .Why is there so many haters in this world? I guess cause the haters make motivaters.People we all in the same ship and it’s sinking fast.I know a lot of you have something better to do than gossip about Monique life.If you don’t get a life.

BET: “Black Entertainment Television”, right? Why is it then you cancel all shows that your supposedly demographic enjoys?? Example: Tavis Smiley, Ed Gordon to name a couple.. I will cancel all subscriptions to BET, boycott any advertiser on BET and encourage others to do the same, as is already happening. I first heard about this today on Michael Baisden’s Radio Show, and I was deeply upset and apalled!!! Bring Mo’Nigue back!!! “We” haven’t had a talk show to identify with since “The Arsenio Hall Show” and we want Mo’Nique back now!! Thank you, Bea n TX

Is it true that BET got ‘rid’ of Mo’Nique to bring in ‘Reed between the Lines??? Well, I hope not, as it will never replace Mo’Nique!! I love Malcolm Jamal Warner and I like Tracey Ross, but Mo’Nique is a better viewing experience. The new show looks like a ‘wannabe Huxtables” and it will not fly, I promise. Keep Tracey on ‘Girlfriends
and give Malcolm a good drama or an original comedy series. But, at any rate bring back Mo’Nique!!!!!

There is only one thing I have noticed that is correct so far that is posted here; Mo was too loud. That was the reason I stopped watching it in the beginning. For some odd reason I never did take it off my DVR to stop recording. I ended up watching a few episodes and I was amazed at some of the guess she had on the show. Granted she was a bit hyper. Mo brought guess on her show that we had fallen in love with so long ago that other shows dare not have the on. I still remember sitting watching Anita baker and Betty Wright. She gave the unknown artist a chance for the world to see the. I also saw a lot of hip hop artist get a chance to tell their story. Monique as far as I can tell fro the saw is a kind hearted and considerate human being. She had black and also white guess on her show. By the way to the one the calls themselves “A FAN” Mo did not play in the movie for colored girls. So are you really a fan or are you here just to complain.

I am not or ever was a fan of Mo’Nique until the movie “Precious”..she came across to me like Vivica Foxx, a wanna-be, round the way girl who was NOT & it just was rubbing me the wrong way..I’m a brotha from Bedstuy, Brooklyn, so I can decipher a true ghetto-fabolous, round the way girl and a sista who is “over-acting” trying to be one..and all that “baby this, baby that” & that annoying “sugar this, sugar that” was really & truly annoying..howeva, I do wish her the best

I finally did catch Brat rapping tho I missed the beginning bcuz I refuse to leave my tv on BET (except for New York Undercover)..BET lossed my viewing after Justin Timberlake was nominated for R&B (no disrespect to him or Justin Bieber)..but again MoNique, jus bring it down a few (actually alot) of notches & focus on drama type films..that seems to be your niche’!! Weather you like her or not its not nice to dog anyone at anytime because she don’t fit your style well while you dogging her you not doing nothing but sending her to the next level in her life witch will be a better place and trust if she to loud for you then turn down the volume on your (TV) and no she was not loud in the studio. This is a prime example of why our children of today act the way they do because of all the negative input that they get from the adults that act like they are teens. Black TV operates under the gist of MSNBC, lies, lies and bigots. S’okay someone told me blacks can’t be racist because of their experience with racism however living in the ATL seeing the killins every night with the broturas, the jackins cars, the hold ups, and killings, I understand some blacks are no better than the Klan, NO intelligence , NO class, bigots and like the great Redd Foxx said a bunch of big dummys. .

Mo’s show was the best late nite talk show on the air. She brought on the folks that you knew but didn’t know. She did not recycle the same old folks that Jay and David have been doing for years. I looked forward to her show each night and will never forget her concerts with Lenny Willams and just recetley with the Hines brothers and the new Huffers. You won’t see this type of entertainment on the major networks so if she is gone so is the best entertainment on late night TV. Ps: Remember Bootsy and Rev Al that is classic TV!! Say no more……….

TO ALL YOU STUPID AZZ HATERS…Mo’Nique had one of the BEST late night talk/party shows that has never, yes I said NEVER been on the tube before. When she would come out of the elevator every night she told your stupid ass this was not a late night talk show it was a late night party. Who you know that’s quiet at a party? She brought people to her show that otherwise would never have gotten the exposure, from all walks of life. She is not racist, she doesn’t need interview skills to have a party, you simply talk and ask questions to and about you guest. I never missed a night of watching her show and I loved every episode, was terribly upset when she stopped coming on five night a week to three nights. Weather you liked the show or not, you try dealing with 3 year old twins, a husband, a six year old and a twenty year old….dam how good your interview skills are. She still let the kid in her come out and play/party every night. If you never took the time to watch the show SHUT THE F**k UP!!!! and you try getting your OWN Talk Show. Oprah had one for 25 years when she finally left, because she really stayed to long and ran out of black and white. Talked about TWO subjects she never has any experience in – Marriage & Children, and with all the experts in this & that left the stage the same fat she was when she came on it. I Love You Mo’Nique and I am so proud of Your weight loss your persona your make it known affection. every body needs a hug every now and then, the kid in you and most of all, of all the talk host you’re the only one with a GOLD MAN along with Sidney MR. You hit the head on the nail. The show was broadcast at a very late time slot and people were not watching the show. 615,000 viewers is not huge for a network like BET. I am going to keep it real. As a guy, I never watched the show more than 5 minutes. Nevertheless, the women, who were probably the core audience and who have most of the jobs in Atlanta are probably too busy and exhausted to watch the Monique Show. I don’t think anything is wrong with The Monique Show appealing to Black audience. If she doesn’t who will. As a Black women, I long for shows like Monique because other talented people are given a chance to showcase their talents/gifts; otherwise, they may never be known on other mainstream media. Many, many talk shows lack racial diversity. Somebody has to stand up and be bold enough to embrace Black. Monique started out being loud, but she toned it down a bit. Some people say that she wasn’t a good interviewer, well in my eyes she was. Why have a talk show or radio show if you can’t be yourself? Why try to imitate some other talk show host? I believe in being an orginal instead of trying to copy someone else. Ok, I get it. Some people don’t know how to acclimate to something different – that’s what a closed mind will do for you – knock what you are not used to. Some people say that she should stay with comedy and acting. Well, I say she is multitalented and should keep doing talk shows, as well. Monique interviewed guests that others ignored and didn’t care to interview. Blacks are big time consumers. We spend just like any other race. I pray that somewhere someone will pick up the Monique Show. I want to see a Black talk show host on TV at night. Quit downing the woman. It takes time to grow into your craft, but many of you who are belittling her, wouldn’t know how to interviewer a guest, because it is not as easy as it may seem. Monique than a great job!! I for one is going to miss seeing the show. I always looked forward to seeing the show.

One of the many things I detest is when some idiots always refer to the Black woman as being loud and/or angry. Why do you suppose Black women are loud and/or angry? Last week there was even black astronauts on the show. Come on black people why are we always hating on each other instead of supporting one another. Maybe she was a little loud sometime, but she toned it down alot. This is a Oscar Winner. Not many blacks have that kind of honor. Hey Monique this is your time to try something else or nonetheless spend time with the family. I know your long lost ones miss seeing you since you have entered the life of fame. Sit down, rest end enjoy life. Everything happens for reason, don’t be like my friend Oprah and decide to retire when your almost to old to do anything else. Although I love Oprah she has another vision as well. A little about me, I left corporate america after 15 years. I was making a decent salary, but I’ve always wanted to own my own business and work for myself and when I wanted to work. Not to make it seem very easy, because working for yourself means you have to generate your own income and make your money work for you. I am now an business housewife and work out of my home. Also I have a college education, own my home, 3 cars ( 1 is mine, other is my husband’s and one we share together for weekends), should I add its a 2 seater and we have 2 children and working on number 3). Just brought my parents a home paid for and everyone is happy. No more commutes etc. Life is tooshort, so Im glad I made the decision to spend more time with those whom I love and care for dearly and feel the same about me. the best thing is doing what I always wanted to do and thats to get paid but hardly working and still have an decent income while still looking better than ever. Should I add no stress. and for those who are wondering Im only 36, my goal was to accomplish this by 40 so Im doing quite well, blessings to my Lord God!

Monique is not a good interviewer. “So let me ask you this” “You look absolutely Amazing” Sugah. Sounds so rehearsed. Monique and Rodney were not funny to me – just my opinion. Corny to be frank. With that said. I like what she is trying to do. Which is establish a platform for black people. Not being racist – just saying hey – you don’t get exposure on any other show – come here and I will let you be on national TV to showcase your talent. I love that part of her. One thing you notice is there are not many big stars joining her on the couch. They don’t support her. Shameful but true. There were too many unknowns on the same show. They should mix it up with a big star and an unknown. AND BET IS WHACK!!! They have nothing absolutely nothing. BKTV is what it should be black kid tv. No good movies – all about shooting, robbing, and gangster crap. No good video shows to showcase all types of talent. Nothing like it used to be. CHEAP BLACK TV. Monique is a personality that is not caving into what WE want her to be. Another thing I like about her. That has paid off for her. Now she can focus on her acting career. She has that under her belt and is a strong woman who will succeed.

I don’t know if any of you r in entertainment business or know anything about running a nation, I doubt u will ever get a chance to be a Academy Winning actress like Monique or The President like Obama. One thing for sure God gave them each a gift and they are doing fine.

They do have WET (White Entertainment TV). It’s called ABC, NBC, CBS

Monique used her show to champion several black-oriented shows such as The Game et al. It is now time for the favor to be returned and have someone come to her aid.

In response to the ignorant comment from MattGrant Park

WET (White Entertainment Television) would be NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX, TNT, HBO, SHOWTIME, STARZ, MTV, ETC. I could go on but I am sure that you get the hint. Just turn on your television set and there you have WET, as you so affectionately call it.
FOH with that ignorant racist comment.

I was thinking the other day how much longer would Monique’s show last and ironically I heard that it’s cancelled. I noticed that she began to come on three nights a week instead of five nights. I thought to myself maybe she wants to spend more time w/her family. Yes, her interviewing skills need improving; but I APPLAUD HER FOR HAVING PEOPLE THAT LOOK LIKE HER & ME ON T.V. Like last night the young black kids that are entrepenuers. We would have never heard/seen them if NOT for Monique. She brought many black artists out that we’d not seen/heard of for a long while. Alot of the guests (i.e., Louis Gossett, Glenn Turman), just to name a few talked about OUR HISTORY that i didn’t know. We are not taught alot about us in schools. So, we do research, which is fine. But I loved the fact that she kept it black and there’s nothing wrong w/that. She, did, however, have the occasional white guest. The white shows aren’t and never will showcase us the way Monique did. I was always concerned when Bob Johnson sold BET to Viacom. And, then when I heard that BET now stood for “BRINGING EVERYONE TOGETHER,” I knew things were changing. So, if you’re so inclined write, call BET to keep her on the air; just like people did to get The Game back on TV. We must be careful as blacks how we speak about our own. While Oprah is good and I’m proud of her accomplishments and the things she has done for blacks (i.e., scholarship to Spelman each year & the many black children she supported to go to school), her network is white; which blows my mind and I’ve had conversations w/her regarding that via emails. She hasn’t changed yet and I don’t know that she will. Let’s pray for Monique rather than put her down. And, regarding her being loud when my family is together we are loud too. Thank you for reading Marilee’s Moment & HAVE A SPECTACULAR DAY!

I watched the Monique show, I enjoyed the show. She had guests on that hadn’t been in the public eye in years. And she showed that there were more sides to an actor, rapper and TV personality than met the eye.Such as their contributions to society. So she was loud BFD that’s just her.She has a big heart and a big personality to go with it. And to small minded haters out there, well thats just what you are small minded and pityful.

Thank You. I did learn a lot from this show. I was educated about a lot of guest she brought on the show. She didn’t bash people but always tried to lift them up and encourage. Thanks

Thank God this show was cancelled…Monique was too loud and she spends too much time kissing the guests ass. And call the the guest baby…was so inappropriate. Monique needs further education on interviewing and how to conduct herself….she should have got some pointers from Oprah

Oh well, you knew it was coming. No one can stay around who is just too real and show casing african american talent. This is a no-can-do. Anyone not following in the exact steps of oprah will be put on hiatus — even on BET. Oprah had some moments but Mo can smoke Oprah by far and do it just being her very natural, confident, really real and “stuttin her stuff” mama. I just love Mo’Nique!!!

her show was canceled because she had a black following and BET is owned by white people. Any time black people are happy and get ANYTHING that is for us, it will be destroyed/canceled/killed in this country.
