I just got back from a charity event at the W Hotel in Midtown hosted by the newest “Real Housewives of Atlanta” cast member Marlo Hampton.
Hampton, a 35-year-old Atlanta resident who moved here from Florida eight years ago, herself wouldn’t confirm whether she was “officially” a housewife but based on the publicity material provided for the event, she is.
The event is called “Glam It Up!” according to the publicist’s note. It’s an initiative created by Hampton, who is described as “entrepreneur, stylist, TV personality and philanthropist.” The purpose: “focus on rebuilding the road to self-empowerment in young ladies 13-17 in the Atlanta area.” She is a product of the foster-care system, the release said. During the day, she provided tips on “healthy eating, dressing for success, grooming, etiquette and self-esteem with 25 girls.”
NeNe Leakes, Cynthia Bailey and Phaedra Parks were supposed to stop by, according to the publicity material provided to me, but they weren’t there while I was there and I didn’t have time to wait for them to show up.
Hampton, in a brief interview, said she was a fashion stylist who has worked with Young Joc and Jazze Pha. She also owned the Red Carpet Boutique at Perimeter Mall for three years but recently shut it down. She is launching an on-line boutique August 1.
According to a Nexis search, she has been arrested at least seven times from 1998 to 2003. The folks at Starcasm were nice enough to create a gallery of her mug shots. Among the charges, she was arrested in 2002 for firearms possession in Florida. In 1999, she was arrested for aggravated battery.

Straight From the A first reported Hampton’s presence at a charity event at Piedmont Park next to Parks, fueling speculation she was joining the cast. She was also with Charles Grant, an NFL player.
Hampton responded in a statement to Straight From the A after it broke news of her felonious past:
“It has come to my attention that some of my past indiscretions have come to light. Let me first state, I am not ashamed of my past, as my past has helped me become a better woman today.
We all have a past; and my hard-knock childhood in the Foster Care system is a reflection on a bigger issue we faced in America, a broken Foster Care system.
I remain deeply sorry for my actions and I will continue to work hard to contribute to a better community.
My present charge in life is to live with God in my heart and help young women, especially from the foster care system, avoid the challenges I faced.
I’m more than just what is being said of me and I look forward to telling my story and helping others.”
– Marlo Hampton
Straight from the A also speculated that Hampton could be a potential replacement for NeNe Leakes, who has alienated herself from virtually the entire cast. But there has been no confirmation that Leakes is leaving the show.

Here’s a short interview I did with her:
Bravo itself has not confirmed to me whether she has joined the cast but I saw no sign at this event news to the contrary.

I’m always amazed at how judgemental people are on this blog. First, this show does NOT represent black women, it represents the women that are on the show! Just as the other shows don’t represent their races. Please stop with that madness. If you think that every black person on a TV show represents the race, you are a sad person.
@George, who cares who Phaedra married? It’s her life. She doesn’t marry felons, she married A felon. You don’t know him so you really can’t judge him. He’s paid his time for his crime. Move on!
@Southern Stereotypes, just what does RHONJ represent? Have you seen that show? Their behavior is pathetic. As a matter of fact, I think it’s worse than the Atlanta show. They cuss and fight all the time.
@Amy, you must not really watch the NYC show because only two are married. They are no better than ATL.

Is she married. I’ve been telling them to change the name to what it actually is AtlantaHo’s. Who is a wife? Phaedra only. I would appreciate if these reality show would keep it REAL (100)Then I would have more respect for these show’s. Stop the Lying. Stop exploting yourselves.

I wonder why is that we as humans, who have messed up many times before (most likely not being caught), holds someone’s past against them even when they are trying to do good things in life now. I don’t know this lady’s story, don’t really know her past and definitely don’t know her future, but I hope that she has turned her back on her criminal ways and is only focused on positivity and good things in her future.

The ghetto-fabulous attitude this show promotes has done more harm to Atlanta than the hood rats and urchins Beverly Hall failed to teach in her taxpayer-supported, government houses of “education”.

@ Beverly Hall – First PLEASE don’t feel like you have to tolerate Atlanta, I will happliy get you back home where you came from. Your comment also lets me know that you surround yourself with less than classy people. Most people attract people like themselves (Birds of a Feather Flock Together), with this being said if everyone you know or everyone that you meet are less then tasteful characters then you may need to step back and look at yourself. What kind of vibe are you putting off? When you are done reading this please leave you conatct information so that I can have the moving company head over and we can get you on your way back home!!!!!!

In the earlier mug shots Ms. Marlo appears to be enjoying the experience, as if she knew the photos would enhance her “celebrity” one day. However, in the later years it not so funny anymore!

I agree with most of the statements here.
Why can’t Bravo’s producers do a better job of selecting cast members? Where are the Jack & Jillers? Where are the 2nd & 3rd generation MARRIED lawyers & doctors? Where are the 2nd & 3rd generation college graduates & debutantes? I know they exist because I AM ONE!
No, I may not be willing to participate in this kind of show, but I can surely point a producer in the direction of contacting a better crop of potential cast members!
PLEASE STOP THE MADNESS with glorifying convicts, cross-dressers, broke-down, no education, no husband or skill having BLACK WOMEN ON reality T.V!

Another example of Bravo portraying the women of Atlanta as classless, ghetto trash fame seekers who have noting to offer for the betterment of society. Of course s the latest thuggette states that she is working to help the “victims” of the foster care system so in her own mind she is attempting to be a positive influence on these young wayward souls. Too bad the producers cannot find someone such as “Working Black Woman” to portray the females in the ATL but as she said in her post she has no drama in her life, just the basic, everyday, run of the mill life. Obviously that does not make for entertainment. “Characters” such as NeNe and Kim make me thankful every day that I live outside the perimeter and away from such a poorly portrayed major U.S. city.

@Unreal, @Ellen The other RH casts are lily white, as is most of what is seen on television. There is nothing wrong with having a majority African-American cast for a change. The problem is the African-American women that Bravo chose to cast, none of which reflect what a housewife is in any way. They are all there simply to feed into negative stereotypes about African-American women and for drama and ratings. If you only want to watch white folks on TV there are plenty of other shows to choose from.

@Sick of RHOA. The lone white chick on the show is just as “ghetto” and trampy as the BLACK ones. So you think bringing more white women on will make the show classy? It’s the drama that keeps them the highest rated franchise, and by your comment, you’ve helped keep the ratings up. Turn the damn channel. No one is forcing you to watch.

People do know that there are whites in Atlanta, right? Just asking because it seems like every show associated with Atlanta is full of nothing but black people. That seems kind of like a stereotype to me.

@Clint Jeez. What’s wrong with white people? Can you not accept that you don’t represent the majority of the population anymore? Where are the black people on the other RH franchises? Where are the Asians and Hispanics? I’m sure they exist in OC, NY, NJ & Beverly Hills. Are you fighting for diversity on those shows or any other TV show. Or is it that you only care because you live in Atlanta, so it’s a bad reflection on where you live?

People kill me when they say “The show does NOT represent black women”. You may feel that way as many of the black women that aren’t that way. However this is how the rest of the nation views Atlanta and Black Women. Just because you don’t feel that way doesn’t equate that a majority does stereotype and this will count against ALL black women.
I have been around many other people in different cities and states, that actually feel that black women are classless regardless how much money they have. They feel that black women are combative with no etiquette and are just drama. So when you go to another city as a black women and your service will suck or someone disrespects you than maybe you need ask the question where it may come from!

Disappointed and not impressed! Please tell me she is not a new Housewife! Bravo can do better. I am glad she turned her life around but I will not be rushing to see the new episode. Atlanta has some beautiful, classy, sophisticated women who are true housewives. Bravo needs to let them represent.

Why does every show filmed in Atlanta, or show having to do with Atlanta only have black people in it. Every time I go out of town and tell them where I’m from they think everyone who lives here is black. Why didn’t they get some REAL housewives from Buckhead that have real money and are really married.

And why does Lawrence have to be Miss Lawrence? If he wants to take dictation, thats his prerogative…but at least try to be what God made u in the process….gee whiz.
