Buck & Kincade, the most stable part of 680/The Fan’s schedule the past decade, is swapping places with Chuck & Chernoff.

Buck & Kincade will take over the noon to 3 p.m. slot and Chuck & Chernoff will do 3 to 7 p.m.

[UPDATED at 3:30 p.m. EST  with comments from management]

The change is expected to happen next week.

David Dickey, who runs the Fan, said he did not base this move on ratings though he has considered it for several months. (He does not subscribe to Arbitron.)

“We’re not doing this because we’re the Titanic,” Dickey said. “We’re doing this because we’re kicking butt right now and want to continue to kick butt and pick up some momentum.”

He thinks the quicker-paced Chuck and Chernoff show will work even better in the afternoons. “We feel the tempo and texture of the John and Buck show looking forward to the next 10 years is better suited for the middle of the day,” he said. “People toward the end of the day want to let their hair down. They want to laugh a little.” And to him, Chuck and Chernoff serves that purpose better.

Moving Buck and Kincade to mid-days is not a step down, Dickey said. Given current research, he said, it’s clear there are just as many people who listen from noon to 3 as 3 to 7 p.m. thanks to smartphones, at-work streaming and traffic patterns.  Other big personalities do just fine from noon to 3, notably Rush Limbaugh.

Buck & Kincade’s ratings have slipped a bit over the past two years relatively speaking to direct rival 790/The Zone’s 3 to 7 p.m. combo of 2 Live Stews and Pollack & Bell.  The Zone’ s strongest daypart is 3 to 7 p.m. and the David Pollack/Mike Bell combo has certainly improved in the ratings over the past two years. For the Fan, its strongest time slot has been mid-days, including Chuck & Chernoff.

So effectively, the Fan is  taking its most popular team (Chuck and Chernoff) and putting it in a more prominent afternoon position against the Zone’s strongest time slot.

Chuck Oliver and Matt Chernoff are both former talk-show hosts at the Zone, both discovered by Zone management. The pair left the Zone separately in the 2007-08 period and reunited on the Fan in late 2008.

The tradeoff: they will both have to give up their TV gigs on CSS Sports Nite.

The Fan is also adding more Dawgs coverage starting next week, including a half-hour Dawgs Roundtable Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 9:30 a.m. Mark Richt’s press conference every Tuesday will air live in the fall.

John Kincade, Buck Belue Oliver and Chernoff are all under long-term contracts, Dickey said.

He was also bemused that Steak Shapiro on the Zone today crowed about the move of Buck & Kincade as a sign that Pollack & Bell had beaten them.

“We’re flattered,” said Andrew Saltzman, president of the Zone. “We feel very good about what we’re doing in afternoons. We’ll keep doing what we’re doing.”

(UPDATE, Sunday, July 17, 2011: Belue texted me a brief statement: “It’s win-win for me. Young family. Get to be more involved with my 3 children after school and have dinner with them. Free’d up to work Braves & Dogs. It’s all good.”)

A new time slot isn’t going to make Buck and Kincade suck less.

John Kincade’s actions regarding the Atlanta Thrashers have been nothing but an embarrassment. He continued to fight for the scraps from management/ownership’s table and had the nerve to place blame for uncaring ownership and incompetent management at the feet of the fans.

So be it; I refuse to subsidize incompetence. I made the complete switch back to 790 for good….the morning show is far better than the 680 clowns over there….Can’t stand Perry; Leo brings nothing; Rude would rather be elsewhere…Buck brings nothing except asinine voice-inflections…

What once was good has gone south quickly. Oh well, it is what it is. Here’s to Kincade getting his much-deserved comeuppance!

(Kincade even blamed ‘me’ for the loss of the Thrashers! Funny, isn’t it?!)

I was told by one of these hosts (the one that is most active on Twitter) that I didn’t know what I was talking about when I gave advise, and even called me an Amateur Radio programmer. Well looks like my amateur thoughts are the same as the professionals. Talk about what the people want. I know C&C talk a lot about College Football, but even they realize there is more than UGA Football and Braves Basketball. Glad to be coming back to the fan.

this really sucks! I listen to both Chuck & Chernoff and Pollack & Bell. Now the two best shows in Atlanta go against each other?

Simple. Uncaring ownership (i.e., all of the derivations of the ownership groups) and incompetent management (i.e., Don Waddell). As I tried to inform you time and again, Atlanta consumers are ’smart’ and refuse to subsidize utter incompetence. Your plastered-lips-to-their-backsides was nothing but an embarrassment–and what little credibility you had was forever lost.

Enjoy the effective demotion, table-scrap-boy. You’re next stop is somewhere else, I can only hope.

After their troubles over the past couple of years, 790 has improved its game significantly. 680 will need more corrections to compete….

I listen to both

As someone who listens to both stations (but not the morning shows, both are terrible), I think this is a bad move for 680.

Buck & ol’ Kincade aren’t going to be magically boosted by a move to the mid-day. They’re ability to draw listeners has banked on the lead in from Chuck & Chernoff. Now they’ll have the woeful Colin Cowherd in the run up to their show. Yikes.

Moreover, Buck & Kincade is a show that is horribly weak on college football info in a rabid college football market. I don’t even think Kincade could name all 12 teams in the SEC. You’re putting that up against a show like Barnhart & Durham that did really well in it’s first run and is a must-listen for college football fans? Yeah, good luck with that. Maybe B&K can outdraw the 2 Live Stews, but they aren’t even doing a good job of that right now.

Chuck & Chernoff will compete well against Pollack & Bell. I guess that was 680’s goal… to take that time slot back from 790. Regardless of how good the show is, it’ll still be hard to come in and steal listeners from an already popular show. What I think winds up happening is 790 becomes a lot more popular during mid days.

Great move for 680. Buck and Kincade have become very stagnant (not “The Rude Awakening stagnant,” but getting there), and have honestly held on to that afternoon drive spot for far too long. Pollack and Bell have achieved high ratings mostly due to lack of another option; and this move certainly provides that. This will boost 680’s afternoon drive ratings, while keeping its mid-day ratings high. Buck and Kincade were at their best when they were competing directly with the 2 Live Stews, which is where they will be now. Afternoon’s just got taken back by 680.

Now…if 680 can just do something about that horrendous morning show (Perry and Leo getting fired would be a really good start).

Have you ever heard Kincade on Sunday mornings or when he fills in on espn radio? Have you ever heard him when I am on vacation? He is fantastic. He has to play the heel on our show because I stink so bad. I mean really, have you ever tried listening to me when I am by myself? Heck, I don’t even like it. I’m just skating by on the national title that Hershel won me.

Surprised to see so much vitriol toward B&K. I love me some Pollack, but Bell is hit or miss at BEST. 2 Live stews are really funny, but not enough local coverage. I’ve always enjoyed C&C AND B&K. Can’t stand listening to Barnhart. Only advantage 790 has is the morning show. Will still stick with 680.

Chuck and Chernoff are entertaining and funny, ditto with Mike Bell. It’s why people listen. It’s not all about sports. Yeah, I like sports, but I don’t want to hear exclusive sports talk. I like ‘guy talk,’ and they excel at that. Buck and Kincade are strictly sports, no real entertainment, nothing funny on that show…

For what it’s worth, if you can’t listen to the show live, you probably can record it using the TuneIn Radio App (free on both Android and iOS) and listen later, or in your car. You’d just have to see if the stations are on there.

In a dream world the Perfect pairing would be Chuck and Pollack, IMHO. Mike Bell never was funny, and he needs to chill out with the fake accents he thinks is cool every time he has to mention a Hispanic or Asian sounding. I consider Kincaid the “Joan Rivers” of local sports talk as he never misses an opportunity to take what I consider cheap shots, Like a lot of posters, I too am rescued by XM radio, where it’s all about sports, and not about morals, making fun of other nationalities, or snide remarks.

680–Yeah, I like listening to 10 minutes of ads followed by the on-air personality doing 5 more
minutes of ads then 5 minutes of Braves talk (double yawn) then back to the ads.

790–Somewhat shorter ads, David (but, but, but, but–For God’s sake use proper English, didn’t you
graduate from College?) Pollack, and the smarmy, although more intelligent, Mike Beer eh…..
……Bell.

Perhaps this is why I mostly listen to my book during drivetimes.

I just read the updated article–and I believe Mr. Dickey is delusional. This is nothing but a slap-down on the formidable combination of arrogance coupled with ignorance, which is what Buck and Kincade is all about.

Only one of his station’s shows is worth anything–and it’s being moved to the afternoon drive slot.

More changes–and drastic ones, especially in the morning–are needed before I make the switch back. 790 has taken complete control of the momentum–and if they can keep to their current balance of sports and entertainment (and away from the baby-Sophie talk), they will return to their prominence of years ago…

C&C is hands-down the best show on 680, and the only one I listen to. As a previous post stated though, now it’ll be P&B v. C&C. That means I can’t listen to both anymore. Although, Buck & Kincade will get the nod over the Stews any day. So, all things considered, my listening will remain about the same – mornings 790 (geez, 680 mornings are just awful), middays to 680, evenings 790 (though I could get sucked in over @ 680 if I flip over during a commercial). I see no way this isn’t considered a downgrade for Buck & Kincade though.

sports talk in atlanta (680 and 790) lame compared to the real stuff in LA and NY—total sports, not all the non-sports chatter, race based stuff (2 stews), local braves homers (680) etc. Get XM radio and do 24/7 real sports with the top people in NY—you will not listen to this local stuff again—book it.

I thought i was the only one who hated the smirkness and holy than thou attitude of Kincade, i seldom listen to 680 though i do enjoy Cowherd, sure i disagree with him often but i need a break from local talk. I remember how Kincade use to take shots at Stuart Scott eye, imagine if someone took a shot at his health issues, which are well documented.

Now that he has that horrible show on ESPN, now he holds his tongue, just goes to show that ESPN is the devil. How in the hell can Amy Lawrence and Kincade have shows? That is unlistenable radio. Anyway, i have no interest is 680, Buck Below is totally unlistenable he sounds like Speedy Gonzales sidekick! Affirmative Action Baby!!

I didn’t realize 790 was still on the air, my radio is frozen on 680 and will remain so. I have never understood how Kinkade has kept his job, his views, interest, and loyalty are much more Northern than Southern. Buck is handicapped by having to carry him, and has done well to survive. I can’t comment on 790 because I honestly haven’t listened to them in the past 4 years, nor will I in the next 4. Dickey is a good owner and promotes Southern institutions, Braves, Dawgs Etc.

Chuck and Chernoff is basically the best sports talk show in Atlanta right now and this is a good move. The Zone has become complete garbage in the past few years since letting their best talent go to The Fan.

How anyone can listen to the Stews or Pollock and Bell for more than 5 minutes is beyond me. Especially the Stews who jump out of this town first chance they got. They have absolutely no appreciation for Atlanta sports teams.

On another note, both stations actually put that annoying caller “Mel” on the air who is a cheap sterotype joke and is never funny or amusing, but for some reason gets airtime constantly. No matter what station I listen to…I turn it when that dumb character gets put on the air.
