Was Jon Stewart doing ‘Amos n Andy’ imitation of Herman Cain?

cain_804025l

Jon Stewart and Fox News have been going back and forth the past few days ever since Stewart appeared on Chris Wallace’s show. How liberal is Jon Stewart? How conservative is Fox News?

Then Georgia presidential candidate Herman Cain took offense at a recent Stewart imitation of Cain. After Cain jokingly said he’d like bills to be only three pages long, Stewart mocked him via a voice somewhat like Cain’s and implied Cain does not like to read. Here’s the exact joke:

JON STEWART, HOST, “THE DAILY SHOW”: While Pawlenty attempts to get us to face the problem inside us, candidate Herman Cain offers real solutions to fictional issues.

HERMAN CAIN (R), PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: Don’t try to pass a 2,700-page bill. You and I didn’t have time to read it. We are too busy trying to live, send our kids to school. That’s why I’m going to only allow small bills, three pages. You will have time to read that one over the dinner table.

STEWART: Bills will be three pages. If I am president, treaties will have to fit on the back of a cereal box. From now on, the State of the Union address will be delivered in the form of a fortune cookie. I am Herman Cain, and I do not like to read.

And here is what Cain has to say with Juan Williams on Fox News:

WILLIAMS: Tell me what’s your beef with Jon Stewart.

CAIN: First of all, Jon Stewart is a comedian. I understand that. But when he starts to mock the three-page joke, him being a comedian, he ought to have known that that was a joke. But he took it seriously and then he started to stretch it out with all of the other stuff. Now, when he mocked me in the dialogue of the old “Amos and Andy”…

WILLIAMS: Dialect.

CAIN: Dialect of the old “Amos and Andy.” I think that was a bit much. But, you know, he is a comedian. I’m running for office. I’m a problem-solver.

WILLIAMS: You know, one of the things that drives conservatives crazy, Mr. Cain, is when liberals respond to any criticism by playing the race card.

CAIN: Right.

WILLIAMS: Are people going to say, “Hey, Herman Cain is now playing the race card on Jon Stewart”?

CAIN: I’m not playing the race card. Some people in the media are playing the race card. I didn’t complain. Look, the list of names that I have been called and the many times that people have tried to pull me into the race card game, I just have refused. I have got a long list of names in my radio studio where every name in the book they have called me. So I really am not overly — I’m not offended by what he was trying to do. He’s a comedian. I’m a problem-solver. So I wasn’t — I’m not the one playing that card. Some other people are playing that card. It’s not about color. I keep saying that. It’s about content of ideas and it is about character.

And here is Stewart defending himself on his own show last night by pulling the “I’m just a comedian who makes fun of everybody’s dialect” argument. It is actually funny to watch Stewart do mock accents of everyone from Dick Cheney to Pres. Obama:

You know why Stewart mocked him? Cain himself says he is a problem solver and not a comedian. Herman should have clarified his 3-page bill was not to solve an actual problem but was a joke. Its all in the delivery.

So Fox gets up in arms when Obama supporters play the “race card,” then turns around and plays the race card in defense of Tea Party darling Herman Cain. That seems pretty dumb to me.

Where was Fox when Stewart was trotting out a muppet to imitate Michael Steele? Where was Fox when said muppet was uttering things like “hipple-ty bipple” on the Daily Show?

From the persepective of a moderate, it seems that Fox is just trying to drum up drama in an attempt to continue the storyline that they’re merely victims of a liberal main-stream media.

By the way, how can the highest rated news network claim to not be part of the main-stream media. They would seem as main-stream as it gets.

I’m largely conservative but Stewart is funny. He always has been. He’s a liberal, sure. But he’ll point out dumb things that a liberal says too. Look, as of right now, Cain is my guy in 2012 but Stewart was right, that was a silly statement. Stewart didn’t say that Cain can’t read . . . that would have been offensive.

If Jon Stewart (not his real name, btw, because he must be embarrassed by his Jewish heritage) were funny, then this would be a different story. He appeals to the stoners who have not the intelligence to get their news from any other source. But, hey, so long as the sheep will bleet for him, he may as well make a buck.

Please. Stewart is an equal-opportunity offender. He is far more likely to adopt a self-effacing Brooklynese Jewish dialect. Everyone is fair game. Jon Stewart is not only a comedian, he is an arrogant, leftist idiot. He is not worth Herman Cain’s time. The only unfortunate part is that when Herman Cain makes a statement like the “three page” reference which pointed out that 2,000-3,000 page bills are rarely even read by those who vote on them, his words are twisted and mocked. Considering the fact that great documents like the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution are shorter than many of our current bills, criticism of our “long-on-words” but “short-on-common sense” politicians is valid.

Yes Stewart and Colbert make fun of liberals. But the ration of lampooning of conservatives to liberals is 5 to 1, and on Colbert, if you don’t count his guests, who he treats with respect, it is 10 to 1. And it is not just the ratio but the tone. The mocking of the liberals is more cushioned and mild…the conservatives get the scathing, running joke, want-to-make-you-a-permanent-laughing-stock treatment. When a friend makes fun of you, they do it with a wink…Stewart and Colbert are never winking at the conservatives.

FWIW-Colbert is 50X funnier than Stewart. Stewart is an blowhard who has come to think of himself as a real intellectual, I get tired of his preaching. At least Colbert seems to still realize he is a comedian. Stewart is the left’s Rush Limbaugh…and I mean that in a bad way.

Big Jim the Rush song was parody of an LA Times liberal article and precisely quotes the liberal author, David Ehrenstein. Do your context research. It’s hilarious in the way he intended is as a “tweak” to you stupid liberals who now use it to support your false thesis.

By contrast Jon Stewart has no depth to his schtick, it’s just mean. And if a conservative used the “Negro dialect” (Google this and Harry Reid) as a comedy prop they’d be out faster than Imus.

Ummmm

Personally, I would have found it more racist if Stewart DIDN’T make fun of Cain and the reasoning for being hands off was because Cain was black and Stewart didn’t want to seem racist. He’s an equal opportunity offender, and at least Cain understands that.

The issue isn’t whether the dialect is racist. It’s that Stewart – a comedian who takes serious issues and lampoons them – took a joke and lampooned it, as if it was a serious statement.

So his audience is laughing at Mr. Cain for being oh, so stupid, rather than laughing with Mr. Cain for making a joke in the first place. I like Jon Stewart, but lampoon comedy shouldn’t fake facts to make someone look silly. There are enough real, silly facts/subjects to lampoon, without stooping to this.

It makes me wonder why Jon Stewart chose to allow his audience to think Mr. Cain was making a serious statement, just so he could make him look silly. I admit that, for me, it appears Stewart was more interested in making a republican candidate look bad, than creating good comedy. But that can’t be true – Jon Stewart makes it clear he’s far superior to that kind of low-brow stunt.

What shows focus on Stewart? I’ve seen him mentioned on 3 shows over the past 10 days for about 5 minutes? Yes that is really focusing. Bernie, since you are a complete idiot, said he DOESN”T think stewart is racist but he decided he would ACT like a liberal does and just say yes he’s racist. It doesn’t surprise me you missed that part, being the typical dumb liberal idiot stereotype that is evident everywhere from Obuma getting elected in the first place. Nice change you voted for moron!!

Sorry, fail. I didn’t see anything racist about his skit. (See the way Bill Maher ALWAYS pulls the “brotha” card when a Black is on his show. To me that’s borderline. But this Stewart thing is not even close.)

Folks, this is a non-story being hyped by FoxNews for one reason–Stewart continues to EMBARRAS S them! He EVISCERATED Bill O’Reilly on the whole Common non-story, and he played Chris Wallace a couple weeks ago like an old piano. They, being the juevinile, faux news organization they are, are known for doing tit-for-tat, so this is their M.O. They try to bury “enemies” whether a story has merit or not. This story, as Stewart shows in his montage, has no merit. I’m surprised so many folks continue to fall for Fox’s okeydoke.

TG

P.S. Herman Cain’s “three page bill” spiel was not a “joke.” It was hyperbole. He meant it, but not to that degree. Basically he was just saying bills should be short enough so that the Congress folks WHO HAVE TO VOTE ON THEM, will actually get a chance to read them. That’s not a novel or contraversial idea. I think most would agree with that.

Cain should take this as a lesson. He needs to be more careful with his hyperbolic language, he continues to dig holes for himself. He was made a FOOL of on that last Republican debate when he tried to back out of his “I don’t feel comfortable around Muslims” statement. Instead of just saying, “I will take the war against radical Islam seriously,” he chose to by hyperbolic, thereby making himself look foolish. He needs to stop trying to grab headlines and be a serios person who THINKS before he speaks. Not that he has even an iota chance of winning, but in the process of running, he can at least be taken more seriously with less gaffes.

Fox Bibble has decided to let this little bibble get under their bobble and now we’ve got a whole bibble-ty bobble on our hands. Everybody bibble? You see, Fox Bibble gets ratings by fostering this false bibble that the mainstream media is all liberal-bibble. So then everything ever said by any poor bibble that in any way conflicts with the conservative viewpoint advanced by Fox Bibble is an attack on conservatives and evidence of liberally biased bibble. Fox Bibble is running with this bibble because they know that their viewers will get up in arms and watch more TV.

And yes, Stewart does poke more at Republicans than Dems. But you have to admit: the poking he does is deserved. You may not think it’s funny (I do), but it’s not inaccurate.

I don’t think it’s much of a stretch to say that left-leaning individuals have better senses of humor than right-leaning individuals.

Where do I start with this one??? Cain is offended by Jon Stewart’s joke which was a response to Cain’s joke. How ironic is that? Just like Cain was joking, Jon was joking so that should even out, right? A comedian’s job is to make fun of people. Show me a comedian that doesn’t incorporate stereotypes (racial, gender, regional, age, cultural etc) into their routine and I’ll show you a starving comedian. What makes it offensive is when a comedian targets one specific group.

Having said that, if he intends to run for president, he can expect much worse things to be said of him during the campaign. Things that almost every man, woman and child will agree is racist or offensive. If he’s already complaining about offensive remarks by a comedian, it tells me he’s too thin-skinned to make it through the most grueling test in the world.

Say what you will about Obama, Bush, Clinton and any of their predecessors but they’re not men who complain about being made fun of.

Sticks and stones, you liberal morons. When Jon Stewart gets called on the carpet, he’s just “being a comedian”. But the rest of his show is “real news”?! Give me a break. His show has always been a stage to bash republicans. But, always remember it’s on the COMEDY CHANNEL and can be somewhat amusing at times. His problem is he tries to be serious and gets defensive when not taken seriously. All you have to do is see how he reacts in interviews when criticized or worse criticizing a democrat. He looks like a baby, crying out “please take my politics seriously”. If you get your “news” from a comedy channel show, you are definitely an mtv generation illiterate. Johnny Carson wouldn’t act that way in interviews. Also, Jon Stewart wasn’t the original funnyman who got that show off and running.

However, all of his impressions are bad and therein lies the humor….like it or not. He is not a racist….just a bad impressionist…funny, but bad. Was it in good taste, probably not. Was it insulting…in this case I’d have to say maybe. Was it intended to be so…no.

Adam

June 29th, 2011
5:58 pm

THIS is the reason why Herman Cain has no shot of winning or even elevating his national profile to have a shot at winning another office one day. This episode indicates that he lacks a fundamental understanding of where this country is at in its dialogue on race and politics.

Regardless of whether you like his politics or not, has Obama ever, EVER accused anyone of being racially insensitive towards him? He hasn’t done it, not one time. Think about it, has Obama ever called anyone out and even intimated that their comments were even racially insensitive?

Whether you like him or not, objective observers of politics have to acknowledge that President Obama’s refusal to “play the race card” even when he would be justified in doing it, helped distinguish him from being a “black” candidate to just being a candidate.

If you want to be a “problem solver” Mr. Cain, then be a problem solver, you don’t need to lecture on racial insensitivity. If you ever want to be a serious candidate, PLENTY of people will do that for you. Juan Williams, Boortz, Hannity, Limbaugh… all of these people have vigorously defended conservatives who are people of color from racially insensitive/hypocritical comments from the left. They will support you too.

But, when you offer the criticism yourself (and, let’s not be naieve, no one believes you when you say, “I’m not playing the race card” when you’re accusing someone of acting like notorious racists) you don’t look like a serious candidate. You look like you (1) can’t take a joke and (2) are trying to interject a critique on race to elevate your national profile.

In other words, taking such offense to this, even though it may be unfair, makes you look like Al Sharpton, Jessie Jackson, other African American candidates who are not serious contenders.

Herman Cain, you just marginalized yourself. I hope you learn a lesson from this because I think your opinions would interject a fresh perspective in the national debate. But you won’t be around for very long if you keep this up.

You don’t know me or about other Tea Partier’s.
We don’t care about color, unlike your side.
We care about fiscal issues. The govt has to balance their books just like we have to at home.
It’s not rocket science.
BTW, try to go to the store, car dealership or any retail place tomorrow & try to purchase something that you don’t have the cash to cover. You will go home empty.

Herman Cain is a fraud. I hope the Tea Party invite him to tea and then lynch him when he gets out of his car.

People hate Herman Cain because he doesn’t fall in line when it comes to politics. Being black, he must be an Uncle Tom because he doesn’t lick liberal boots. Why is it when you believe people should work for what they get instead of waiting for it at the mail box on the frost of the month, you ar automatically racist? The party that wants people to be open minded sure hates it when the built in voting base uses their own for something other than furthering the moocher agenda. In his current form and abilitiy, Herman Cain is twice as qualified as the man in the white house now, and this Honkey is gonna vote for him til he can’t anymore.

I find it funny how the conservative slanted posts are struggling to find ground to stand on to continue their attacks on Jon.

There’s a reason why there are no conservative comedians (good ones anyways), to be a comedian you have to be informed and you have to critically think. Those two things are crucial to setting up a joke and to have to audience follow you along for it. The other important thing for most comics is the ability for the comics to be able to laugh at themselves, as well as the audience be able to laugh at themselves. A good example is Russel Peters who can get almost any ethnic and cultural group to go along with a laugh at pretty much at their expense (in a non-racist way) That I have to say non-racist is because people who take themselves too seriously cannot laugh at a joke.

With all that in mind, conservatives have nothing but a smug sense of superiority in which the only laughs they can get are at the expense of others; or in other words standing on top, pointing fingers at everyone else, whist spitting on them. A “We are right, everyone else is stupid” mentality. Such is the reason why the sentiment of most heavy right leaning posts seek to demean and degrade the target of their ire.

BTW, Obama has been the target of comedic jokes on his ineptitude, lack of drive and momentum; but you’d have to watch ‘liberal’ comedians to hear them. Though if you’re a heavily right leaning conservative, you wouldn’t tune in to those anyways; you’d be too busy listening to the right-wing pundits talking about how he’s destroying the country. Hyperbole is another tool of a comedian, but how do you do a hyperbole of the talking points on the right? It just doesn’t work.

One thing is very clear, from reading all these comments. At least half of the conservative commenters commenting on this story (dismissing the ones who insist on commenting on Obama’s policies instead of Cain or Stewart) did not bother to even watch the video the story is referencing. For people to say things like “He never does this to Obama etc” when Stewart is RIGHT THERE in front of you, doing the same thing to Obama (and Kennedy, Kerry, etc etc) just reveals a level of ignorance that you should be ashamed of. At least watch the video before making a comment about it.

Stewart is the perfect example of the left wing media bias in this country. Everyone time I accidentally come across his program, he’s ripping on Fox News and the GOP. Not once have I heard him rip on or even impersonate Obama, which is suprising given how much of a joke Obama is. A few things come to mind, such as:

-Being the first President to require a teleprompter to be able to get through a press conference
-Inviting a rap-artist that celebrated killing cops to the White House
-Criticizing a State Law that he admitted he never even read
-Making a joke at the expense of the special olympics
-Stating that there were 57 states in the United States
-Mispronouncing the Marine Corps as if it were the Marine Corpse
-Feeling the need to apologize for our country’s ‘arrogance’
-Doubling the National Debt, which took more than 2 centuries to accumulate
-Joining Mexico in suing Arizona to force the State to allow Illegal Immigration
-Putting 87,000 workers out of work by using a forged document to place a moratorium for offshore oil drilling on BP, which had one of the best safety records of any in the industry prior to the oil spill
-Reducing theretirement plan holdings of GM stock by 90% and giving unions a majority stake in GM
-Spending hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars to take the first lady to a play in NYC

And the list goes on and on.

Come on Obama voters admit it, this man is a complete fraud and you know it. Just give this man four more years and watch the country our patriotic founding fathers worked so hard to build become what Greece is today.

Fox News had all their program leads complaining about Jon Stewart. It’s interesting to see how all the mouth pieces speak as one voice. They were all on message. This appears to be the result of several days of FOX trying to decide how to respond to Chris Wallace’s interview of Stewart. They still have not responded though to being called out on a long list of inaccurate (trying to be kind here) reports they have run as fact.

When Chris Wallace first made the “Amos n Andy” suggestion two weeks ago – Stewart should have looked at his watch and said, “Gee Chris – less than a minute and your already playing the race card.” This isn’t about racism – it’s all about FOX getting even for Wallace giving Stewart a chance to expose their “other side” of the news. FOX would rather talk about anything other than Stewart/Wallace – so they go whole hog on Stewart being a racist liberal disguised as a comic.

When I smoked dope 30 years ago in college, Jon Stewart would have appealed to me, too. Now (and not due to college) I am more enlightened, and am amazed at the bias, and what liberals like Stewart are allowed to get away with. To you conservatives trying to convince the liberals that they are ignorant and shallow-minded: reminds me of the old joke of trying to teach a pig to sing…just don’t do it.

What’s with all my fellow Republicans getting all personal when attacking Beef Stew and the bibbles that watch his show? Can we please criticize the program without resorting to name calling and claiming that the viewers smoke dope?

Listen, let’s just be good boys and bibbles and realize that there’s a lot more important bibbles going on in this great big bibble called America, baby.

Why are people criticizing Obibble? He didn’t have anything to do with this bibble last I checked. So lets keep the discussion on the matter at hand, that Hermain Cain is a big ol bibble with nothing better to do than waste time and other people’s money in an effort to get him a better book deal, more radio syndication, and higher speakers fees. It’s all a bunch of bibble, ya bibble?

I remember when libralbibbles used to attack George W Bibble. I always said “you may not like the bibble, but you should respect the office of President of the United States.” Can’t we all just heed those words and try to be more civil bibbles?

Bibble out, y’all

dawgfan, which way are you going? ummmm, yeah–it is funny when comedians like bruce bruce do “white voices”, he was paid well on “triple x, American”–(something close) when he was riding in the cheese truck and the good guys came to steal the guns that were being transported. and yes of course Blacks can be racist- but…. who is racist MORE–that is the question. and no–i cannot answer it, i do not know the answer, but i know that the matter is tiresome. if it is funny, laugh. if it is stupid, dont. if it offends someone, apologize. but, life is short, keep living, daggggg.

Enough with the hypocrisy already! I get sick and tired of ‘conservative’ (aka redneck/right-wing reactionary) bloggers criticizing Jon Stewart for making fun of Herman ‘Whiner’ Cain and then say if a conservative radio/TV host did likewise to an African-American they’d calling for his/her head. Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck, Boortz, O’Reilly and Ann Coulter have criticized, mocked and otherwise made disparaging remarks about minorities and they still have their radio/TV shows. The problem these crazy right-wingers have is they are happy to criticize, skewer and lampoon their opponents and ‘enemies’ but when they are the ones on the receiving end they whine and complain worse than a spoiled brat.

Wow! Did folks actually listen to the bit John Stewart actually did? Nowl, I just watched a bit of an Amos and Andy episode and the only similarity is that Stewart used a gruff sounding voice, could have been a Louis Armstrong voice, but not as gruff. It sounded a little more gruff than Mr. Cain’s own voice. I have a radio show and I commented on how the 3 page idea was a dumb idea. Does that make me a racist? Mr. Cain says that anyone who took his 3 page idea seriously was dumb because they did not get that he was joking. So the comedian Stewart made fun of the politician’s “joke” and it is racist. Before you start shouting that he only attacks conservatives and only does voices for Conservatives, watch the clip above or maybe watch 1 or 2 episodes. The guy skewers everyone. Yes, he is a liberal and he does not try to hide that, but he tries to attack hypocrisy and dumb ideas regardless of what political flavor they are.

Bottom line, if you are a politician, make sure you have a good comedic writer on staff, so your jokes are actually funny. Everyone else, take a chill pill and listen to the whole story.

I have no comments regarding the incident.

However, I see that Cain said to Williams, “…he mocked me in the dialogue of the old “Amos and Andy”…

And Williams corrected him… “Dialect.”

I thought that was funny. But I have a strange sense of humor.
