The theme this past year is the big got bigger. The top five shows a year ago are all up in ratings, according to Nielsen Media Research.
For the eighth year in a row, the most popular TV show was “American Idol” for the 2010-11 season.
The performance shows on Wednesday, according to Arbitron, averaged 25.97 million, up about 1.2 million viewers from a year ago, its first increase in viewership since season five. The Thursday results show came in No. 2 at 23.87 million viewers, up 400K from a year ago.
Both “Dancing With the Stars” performance and results shows were also up more than two million viewers year over year, as was NBC’s Sunday Night Football. “NCIS” gained about one million viewers a week.
Most shows, as is typical, saw a drop-off in viewers year over year including “Undercover Boss,” “CSI,” “The Mentalist,” “Two and a Half Men” (forced to play more repeats because of the Sheen problem), “Desperate Housewives,” “Survivor,” “Grey’s Anatomy” and “CSI: Miami.”
Here are the top 50 programs of 2010-11 season, which also includes repeats.
Since these are overall viewers, CBS dominates. These include all viewers including DVR usage up to seven days after it aired through 5/15 and live plus same day for 5/16 or later. Episodes designated as “special” are not included.

I think the stuff listed under American Idol is more telling about uselessness.

Well, it’s pretty simple, I mean, look at my name…..if it’s not on FOX, I didn’t watch it. I absolutely refuse to watch any programming on ABC, CBS and NBC except in the Fall when College Football is dominant. I may be narrow minded, but I’m consistently narrow minded
I don’t like watching Trash on TV and that’s all that’s shown on ABC, CBS and NBC.

Boy… it’s a good thing that Idol’s on its death bed. We won’t have to watch it next season.

Well, what do you expect? AI is a family show. Outside of the somewhat controversial performances from Iggy Pop and Gaga, a wider age range can sit around the tube to watch and participate (thru voting of course) with AI. At least at the season’s beginning of AI there is enough variety to keep people engaged. Most folks are hooked by the end of the season whether their favorite has made it or not.
It’s like an interactive game. Whether you vote on talent, genre of music, gender, race, etc. you’re free to vote based on any criteria. If you’re lucky, maybe you win in the end. That makes people feel good. Everyone wants to be a winner.

I am glad that “Idol” and “Survivor” continue to fare well. Some folks keep trying to bury one or the other, but neither is near death yet!
Hope the good showing for “Body of Proof” signals a return. Enjoyed watching Dana Delany, for sure/

I’ll stick with CBS. At least they haven’t sold-out totally to ‘reality television’.
