Project 9-6-1 dumps morning show of Shaffee and Klinger

Shaffee and Klinger were only together for a few months, but Project 9-6-1 decided to dump them. The morning show appears to be gone. They are no longer on the rock station’s website.

I’ve texted messaged both Klinger and Chris Williams, the program director, for possible explanation and will update if I get them. (My computer with Shaffee’s number on it is down with some malware problem so I’m using my wife’s computer. I’ll try to track him down once I get this fixed.)

Project’s morning numbers have generally lagged behind the rest of the station. The station, which morphed in late 2006 from being called 96rock and is now what is known in the business as an “active rock” station, created its first morning show back in the fall of 2007 with Giant Brian Carothers and Shaffee. Carothers lasted two years. Shaffee paired with El Jefe for a year before Klinger came along from Florida.

The station overall is doing well, landing at No. 4 last month among 18 to 34 year olds.

In February, I sat down with Klinger about the prospects of the morning show, which has been always been (to various degrees) music intensive.

“Tighten it up, then build it up,” he said at the time. “We’re in our infant stages. It’s a long-term prospect. They’re committed to that.”

A shot of Shaffee with the Thrasher mascot on the Project 9-6-1 before it was deleted.

A shot of Shaffee with the Thrasher mascot on the Project 9-6-1 before it was deleted.

And Shaffee in March, 2010, facetiously said goodbye on air, just in case. Smart man. Here’s how he explained it at the time:

“In this business, shows suddenly disappear all the time and they never get to say goodbye to their audience. So this morning I said goodbye to Atlanta. I never fear losing my job, but I feel good knowing that I had my chance to say goodbye in case it ever happens.”

Shaffee has also been an announcer at Atlanta Thrashers games at Philips Arena. With the Thrashers on the verge of moving to Winnipeg, that job may be in jeopardy as well.

It was a really bad show that appealed to listeners with IQ’s even lower than the average Regular Guys fan. Project 9-6-1 plays music for middle class white teenagers with undeserved angst.

I’ve never heard the show before, but do have to say that ‘active rock’ format is one of the worse things I’ve ever heard. Hair metal is right up there, but all that warmed-over grunge just sucks.

LOL!! I knew it sooner or later this day would come. I like Klinger, Chris, Jordin, Aly and the rest of the Project 9 6 1. But Shaffee is just an ass. He always insults people on Facebook/ Twitter. He’s an arrogant prick. I don’t feel sorry for this son of a bitch a bit but I feel sorry for the rest of the project family.

When it was The Giant Brian show I always said Giant Brian was lame, bu they need to keep Shaffee. Shaffee and El Hefe was ok but too many skits. Shaffee and Kilnger just never seemed to take off. I liked Shaffee’s voice and his attitude sometimes, but there was always too much talk about wrestling. On that note, I feel very bad for Shaffee this weekend. Losing his job and the death of Macho man….. I will pray for you Shaffee.

Horrible station and the morning show was aweful. In this economy I could no longer justfy Sirius (and XM damaged the Sirius format), but as soon as I can afford it I am gone from Atlanta radio.

Giant Brian and Shaffee had chemistry and seemed genuinely happy to be working together. Never heard that with Klinger. I thought Shaffee was quick witted on the show and offered levity but Klinger never seemed comfortable with having a partner. He was always interrupting Shaffe and seemed peeved he had to share the spotlight. This caused Shaffee to sound like he knew days were numbered with this duo. At least that is what I heard coming through the airwaves. Good luck Shaffee you tried to be a good partner.

All I listen to now are the oldies stations, (106.7, etc), only shifting to another when the irritating commercials come on. The high quality music of the past is more preferrable than BS morning shows, most of which are crass and boring, and current music, of which I could write better songs myself. (Dallas on 101 is especially repulsive). If I had a mp3 connection in my car for a flash drive, the only radio I’d listen to would be 750 AM, and only for the traffic, and even that is incomplete most of the time. I haven’t tried Satellite radio yet–maybe “narrowcasting” is the answer. It sure isn’t the fare on Atlanta stations in the AM–or at any other time for that matter…

Does anyone even listen to local radio? Seriously, the only local station I listen to is NPR. The rest of the stations on the dial (”talk”, music, sports, etc.) in Atlanta are garbage. Thank goodness for Internet radio.

Tim at 10:56 a.m., I couldn’t have said it better myself: “It was a really bad show that appealed to listeners with IQ’s even lower than the average Regular Guys fan. Project 9-6-1 plays music for middle class white teenagers with undeserved angst.”

You are RIGHT ON. Music as a whole has slowly seen its quality dissolve over the last 20 years, since musicians stopped going for ALBUMS and only starting trying to make one good SINGLE. Our latest, microwave, nano-second, no-attention-span generation is to thank for that. I mean, Itunes is great for finding older music, but you should have to buy entire albums, not just one song — that’s how a lot of these crap groups get by now — One decent song and 9 fillers. In the past, some CDs I bought, the NON-SINGLES were better than the singles!

Next up — David at 11:15 a.m… you’re right about the worn-out grunge, but don’t hate on hair metal! That was a GREAT and FUN genre of music! It made you want to have a good time, as opposed to grunge garbage, which makes you want to shoot yourself. I would LOVE it if somebody would resurrect the old 96 Rock format — they could weave in some QUALITY new rock (which is hard to find, but there IS some out there) and also play some of the classic stuff that us older listeners grew up on in the late 70s and early 80s… play what made 96 Rock SO DANG POWERFUL back in the day! AC/DC, Scorpions, Rush, Pink Floyd, Def Leppard, Ronnie James Dio, Van Halen, etc. I have plenty of old cassettes recorded off the radio in the early 80s if any program directors need some help!

Finally — Billy at 1:03 p.m. and Ted at 1:07 p.m…. yes, Satellite radio is worth it — any trip over 10 minutes in my car, if I don’t need to check traffic, I have my Sirius radio going — GREAT music, narrow-casted, and no commercials. (Somebody please tell the Chevrolet dealers in Atlanta that NOBODY BUYS CRAP CHEVYS ANYMORE!) And Ted, I will disagree with one thing — the sports stations in Atlanta are pretty good. I love the 680 morning and mid-day shows, and they carry all our local sports teams, so I get good information and interviews on the Braves, Hawks, and Thrashers (for now!) I mean, ESPN radio on my satellite is good, but I like LOCAL when it comes to sports talk.

And Ted, you listen to NPR? really? you can stomach that pretentious, unabashedly liberal drivel they spew out every day? My hat’s off to you, my friend… NPR shouldn’t exist at all, in my opinion… why should the government subsidize radio with an OBVIOUS political leaning and agenda?

Here’s hoping some program director with kahones will come to Atlanta, not change formats and on-air lineups every 2 months when ratings come out, build a talented sales team that can gradually build sponsors, and work on developing a loyal fan base… the only people that listen to radio now are people over 25 or 30 (kids under 25 don’t do radio, they do Ipods and internet radio and smartphones)… so quit trying to cater to THEIR musical tastes! Go after the 30, 40, 50 year old market… THEY are the ones in the car and sitting in offices most of the time. 19-year-olds are “chillin” with their “homies” and listening to crap on their Iphones.

Long live 96 Rock! Wish we still had Mark & Steve in the mornings, John Boy mid-days, Katie in the afternoons, Willard at night, and McKenzie Scott’s smooth voice in the overnight. God, I miss those days!

I used to listen to Klinger on “Planet Radio 93.3 out of Jax, Fla when I lived on Jekyll Island. He always seemed like a cool dude and was very good at what he did. I’m sure he won’t be unemployed very long. Wish he’d get hired at the rock station here in Wilmington.

I never warmed up to Klinger, but I’ll miss Shaffee. Like someone above said, he’s having a rough week; lost his job, lost Macho Man, and about to officially lose the Thrashers gig.

That said, I wish more stations would do away with morning shows and just play music. I turn on the radio for tunes, not jabber.

I never listen to the radio and am not sure why I even wasted my time reading this story. I listened to 96Rock back in the ’80’s when I was in high school- best station around at that time. If C.M. is right, and it is now definately “carp”, I wouldn’t want to listen to it, either. :-)

It is a shame Shaffee and Klinger are both gone just like that! I wonder if Dubs will be kept on as a producer and if Chris will fill in mornings until a new show is put together. Since Knox is still with Clear Channel, will he be brought back to the Atl. Could El Jefe be brought back in the fold? To those of you saying Shaffee was too mean, like the replacements will be nicer.

It’s Cheap Channel folks. They’ll just beam something in from a station they own in Moose Jaw, Idaho, slap it on the air and try to make it sound local. It’s what Cheap Channel does. They were the destruction of broadcasting.

Yeah, Klinger had a good run at Planet Radio before they moved down the dial and then eventually dumped the format … dumping their morning drive programming along with it (Klinger was afternoon drive time, IIRC).

The suits never allowed Brian to do HIS show. I still think it was the people of Atl, who lose out. Brian & Shaffee had more to give, but never had front office suport. They were told what kind of show to do. They pretty much had ZERO artistic freedom. Klinger sounded like a robot/ mngmt ass kisser. How can shaffee have any chemistry with a statue? Best thing that ever happened to Brian AND Shaffee was becoming detached from a 90s rock station

I’m amazed how many people take their time out of their day to post “I can’t believe people still listen to radio”. . . on a RADIO BLOG!

Since my commute is only 15 minutes, I’d usually tune in just in time for Shaffee Sports. If I missed it, no big deal. But again, this is the kind of thing that frustrates a listener – when you want a good laugh at certain times during the morning – and then it’s not there anymore.

I hope Fat Kid can get the gig now that he’s back in Atlanta. But, knowing Clear Channel, they’ll just move an unknown into the AM slot. My hope is for a better show, but. . . I’ve hoped before. . .

I like the 9 6 1 format. I am old(er) hair band listener, this is the closet thing we have to the rock of the 80’s with out having to listen to the rock of the 80’s over and over as on 97.1 and 100.5.
Hopefully, the Project will remain a real rock station and not convert back to another uneeded (classic) rock station.

The problem with that show is that they would bring up a topic on Monday, and then stay on the same topic for the ENTIRE WEEK!! That does NOT work in radio. I usually listen to TRG and suring their LOOOONG commercial breaks I switch over to 96.1 to listen to some of their music (I say some because about 40% of that crap is new age garbage which is more pop than rock). All in all I thought they made half-way descent observations. Sucks for the Schafee guy though, potentially being out of two jobs. Maybe he’ll move up to Canada with that joke of a hockey team.

They totally lost a listener. I totally loved listening to Klinger and Shafee in the mornings. It is such a shame how that business is. Just brings in people and rips them off the air. It is a slap in the face to listeners too. I think the program director at Project 96.1 should be ashamed! Bringing in Klinger from another state and then axing the show before it had a chance to take off? Sucks man. Both guys are talented and will do well in radio.

I have been listening to the project since Giant Brian. I like Shaffe and Hefe best. I think it was a mistake loosing Shaffe for sure, He trashed a lot of people but it was all a big joke, like you do with your best friends when you are joking around. I’m pissed at the Project because he is gone, but will still listen. If they change the programing though I will be gone with a lot of other fans. I work in Macon and we stream the project because there are no stations there that play new rock.

Shaffee and Klinger were both good DJs. remember a radio DJ’s on-air personality that is sometimes different from their actual personality, like shaffee. but I have to agree when I first heard klinger I though he would be a better actual DJ than a morning host especially because of his knowledge in music. so him and shaffe did not mix well. Giant brian and shaffee had more to offer to the project family, but hey that’s just my opinion.
