The Voice recap: battle rounds #2

nakia-reynoso-voice

This is the second of four weeks that breaks 32 people down to 16.

Team Cee Lo Green: Tje Austin vs. Nakia (Ne-Yo’s “Closer”). Both are good singers. Tje is a more traditional R&B singer, a smooth Ne-Yo sound a like. Nakia is more like Joe Cocker, a white soul singer. Nakia is more unusual and the quirky Cee Lo opted for him.  Winner: Nakia (right)

Team Blake Shelton: Duo Elenowen vs. Jared Blake (”Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”) – Reba advises Jerry to keep eye contact and fight for his attention. The male-female duo needed more confident, she said. I never really liked Elenowen. They seem like a latter-day Captain & Tennille. I always preferred Jared. And on stage, Jared blew away the duo both in terms of stage presence and vocals. I was surprised it took two tries before he was picked at all. Winner: Jared.

Team Adam Levine: Javier Colon vs. Angela Wolff. (”Stand By Me” by Ben E. King) – NBC told me last week that Atlanta’s Rebecca Loebe was up this week. Guess not.  Promotions show she’s up next week. Javier is Mr. Soul. Angela has a sweet voice and persona. This is a simple song that Javier sings with passion and life. Angela smiles her way through it. I like both. Javier wins out. Winner: Jared.

Team Christina Aguilera: Beverly McLellan vs. Justin Grennan (”Baba O’Reilly” by the Who) – Justin is more the soul singer vs. Beverly, the bald rocker. This is totally Beverly’s wheelhouse. Both sing their hearts out. But Bev shines on stage. Winner: Beverly.

First of all, thanks for The Voice blog. The Voice along with the Sing-Off are my favorite “singing” competitions.

Team Cee Lo Green: Tje Austin vs. Nakia. The winner of this matchup is simply a matter of preference, not who’s better. Cee Lo is starting to tick me off, by pitting his two best singers against each other. It’s been two weeks in a row he’s done this. He should’ve seeded his singers, and used the basketball tourney system to have them compete. He’s been placing #1 seed vs. #2 seed, then in week 2, placing #3 seed vs. #4 seed. This makes interesting TV early on, but it could come back to haunt him.

Team Blake Shelton: Duo Elenowen vs. Jared Blake. I probably would’ve ditched Owen and kept Elen early on. Probably wouldn’t have mattered anyway, because Jared was just the stronger singer out of all three of them. I agree with Blake on his choice to go with Jared. Excellent song choice by Blake too. Great idea to start off with a fairly simple song, but seeing what they can do with it. You can tell Jared is a “seasoned” performer.

Team Adam Levine: Javier Colon vs. Angela Wolff. This wasn’t even close in my opinion. Javier came off with more “swag” (confidence), he was more cognoscente to blending, his notes were well placed, tone was more balanced, and he knew when to hit his runs. Angela wasn’t in the same league, and it appeared her confidence was a bit shaken. For some reason, it seems that Adam is a bit perplexed about “something” when it comes to Javier. It’ll show itself later on, but Javier is one of the more talented singers on The Voice AND American Idol. (He does have a released CD to his credit)

Team Christina Aguilera: Beverly McLellan vs. Justin Grennan. Bev killed it!!!! Justin did a good job by getting the crowd warmed up, but how hard can it be to get people moving to “Baba O”?! Justin had confidence and did his best, but that kid was off key during the entire song. Also, his lack of phrasing was extremely noticeable. Bev really didn’t have to work hard to get the job done. She sings with so much emotion. Even though she tends to be a bit “quirky” in her performances, she still hits the notes. I admit………she’s one of my favorites. I’m always excited to see her perform. GO BEV!!!!

“Beverly is more the soul singer vs. Beverly, the bald rocker.” I know the first Beverly is supposed to be Justin, but this just made me laugh. Between that and spelling Elenowan 2 different ways, you must’ve been in a rush, or tired.

I know there’s nothing OTP in your world and you wouldn’t wast your time writing about anyone from the “other Georgia”, but the Wolffe girl was Metter, small Southeast Georgia town. She did well, but didn’t stand a chance in her battle. It is amazing how much better all of the Voice contestants are than the Idol finalists.

Sorry, typos: It should have been “waste” and “from Metter” of course.
