CNN’s Don Lemon says he’s gay

CNN’s Don Lemon, who last year stunned audiences when he said he was molested as a child, has revealed he is gay.

Lemon, 45, has a new memoir coming out called “Transparent.” He told Bill Carter of the New York Times of the inherent risks of coming out as a news personality.

“I’m scared,” he said to the Times. “I’m talking about something that people might shun me for, ostracize me for.”

Although some TV personalities are out, most notably Rachel Maddow of MSNBC, he said being a black male makes it even tougher to be gay.

“It’s about the worst thing you can be in black culture. You’re taught you have to be a man; you have to be masculine. In the black community they think you can pray the gay away.”

okay, before the foolish comments start, let me say that not just the Black community believes that homosexuality can be prayed away– it is a fundamental christian thing where people believe that. he is very good looking, i wish him well. personally, my problem with gay men of any color is when they practice it, but hide it and endanger the lives of the women they also deal with. other than that– life is too short.

Big deal, he’s gay! Move on, and give the dude his privacy. BTW, I am a heterosexual.

I agree with carlaroqs…. I think it’s more about the christian aspect that makes it difficult. The African American community just happens to be very religious. All boys are raised to be masculine and be a man and all girls are taught to find a husband and raise a family. It’s not a race issue, it’s a religious one.

Unless you’re Tyler Perry, is being black and gay, in Atlanta of all places, really STILL an issue?

Care less about the orientation, it’s his flaming liberalism that makes me want to puke. Can’t stand the dude. I always click when I see he’s on the desk

Agree with Buckeye, mostly. I care less about skin color, sexual orientation, etc. I just am not a fan of his political views. That said, I wish him every happiness and peace – good for him for being honest about his life.

I don’t care if he’s gay, blue or tried to fly over Snake River Canyon in a rocket jet.
As long as he doesn’t display any personal biases in his reports/comments then it’s all good.

I don’t understand why it’s anyone’s business. WHO CARES what you prefer in the bedroom? Why is a news person writing a book called “Transparent?” I thought newspeople were supposed to stay behind the mike, not in front of it. Everyone wants to be an entertainer, everyone wants folks to know their intimate business. I guess the limelight is too much.

Sorry, he is entitled to be who he is, but I just don’t see the upside in broadcasting one’s intimate business. Anderson Cooper, for all the rumors swirling about him, keeps his business to himself and keeps it moving. I hope he doesn’t fall into this “I must confess to the world who I like to sleep with” trap. Sorry, the world just doesn’t need to hear it.

well the good thing is him being honest about his preference. the bad thing is he shouldn’t have spoken on the behalf of the Black culture. all Black people are not the same.

I like his show.. his orientation doesn’t bother me one bit. Whatever floats his boat. I don’t see any reason for people to come out except to sell a book. I’m sure the ppl close to him know that he is gay.

He’s a very good commentator and I appreciate that. What a person does behind closed doors is personal and their business. Being what is titled ‘Gay’ is a personal choice of sexual preference, this doesn’t mean someone should blast it all the time. Children don’t need to know and hear about all of this at an early age.

@TG, you, like so many others, tend to be unable to separate one’s orientation from one’s behavior! Based on the way you look at it, every heterosexual, regardless of age, MUST be engaged in sexual activity! Mr. Lemon is NOT revealing his behavior; he is revealing his orientation!!! There are countless individuals of various gender orientations who are not engaged in sexual activity/behavior!

I met Don several years ago when he came to my office building and found him to be a very pleasant person. It took a lot of courage for him to make this disclosure about his personal life, but it does not affect his professional journalism in any way and I will still watch him becuz he is such a cutie and is an asset to CNN.

It must be disappointing to come out of the CNN closet, and nobody’s in the room.

CNN hasn’t been relevant in 10 years.

Black and Gay, that’s enough to hired NYT, CBS, NBC, ABC, Wash. Post, AJC, or any local anchor job. You don’t even have to be smart. It was a good career move on what’s his name part.

I continue to have a problem with the gay lifestyle. I continue to wonder what a gay man is missing when he looks at a fine, delicious, and breath taking woman. What enzyme or switch remain in the off position when she smiles at him.

At the same time I am wondering when was the last time a gay man broke into one of the houses in my subdivision or carjacked a woman and baby from QT.

Infrequent responder, okay, how’s this? It’s no one’s business who the f he is attracted to or “orientated towards.” Is that better? Bottom line, it seems the homosexuaal community is absolutely OBSESSED with broadcasting their sexual preference. I just don’t know who told them someone wanted/needed to hear it. I just don’t know why they are so bent on making others accept them or something. By and large, they seem to be troubled individuals seeking acceptance from the larger society, and the larger society is telling them, “you’re good. Just keep your business to yourself!”

For everybody that is proclaiming that they don’t give a hoot about this guy’s personal business and why is this a story.

This is a story because of people, much like you, who write and pass discrimiatory laws against people like me and the news anchor here.

It matters because coming out and letting people like you know that there are people like us is the best way to stopy people like you from wanting to write those laws.

Until people like you know that there are people like us all around you and that there is nothing to be afraid of…. people like you will keep writing, lobbying for and passing those laws that keep people like us from living our life, quietly, with the people we love.

When LGBT people in this county have equal rights and there is no more discrimination, then we’ll stop publically proclaiming who we love.

Until then, consider youself ahead of the curve and let us do what needs to be done.

“All boys are raised to be masculine and be a man and all girls are taught to find a husband and raise a family.”

If that’s the case, the girls are failing miserably. With a illegitimacy rate of 80%+ in the black community, they are raising a family all right, but not finding too many husbands.

Don has been gayer than a $3 for a long long time. When a grown man wears UGH boots, you’re not hiding anything. Eyeroll! Please, but this on the ticker. He has diva fits on air all the time. I’m surprised he doesn’t read the news wearing a pink boa!

I didn’t want to know this. Don is so cute and such a professional at his job. When he said he was molested as a child and never told his mother until he was 30, I should have known something was going to come out next. I thought I saw a wedding band on his finger, and I dismissed that thought. I sure hate this because some nice woman could have made him very happy. I don’t know why gay people have to tell everyone that they are gay. Why is that?
