Fox 5/WAGA-TV’s Justin Gray was blocked by state troopers from a public immigration bill signing held today by Gov. Nathan Deal at the Gold Dome. Why? Deal’s press office was angry about an unrelated, unflattering story Dale Russell had done the night before about Deal.
VIDEO: Governor Deal’s Office Bans FOX 5 Reporter from Immigration Bill Signing: MyFoxATLANTA.com
Below is the story that upset Deal’s office. The campaign had paid $90,000 to a fund-raising company the I-Team had never heard of called Southern Magnolia Capital. Russell discovered that company was connected to Deal’s daughter in law Denise Deal. Phil Wilheit, identified in the story as Deal’s campaign manager, told Russell the transaction was “transparent” but Russell said the firm has no website or any obvious public information or direct link to Deal’s name.
Fox 5 news director Mike McClain sent a statement today at about 5:30 p.m. to me: “FOX 5 Atlanta stands by our I-Team investigation and Reporter Dale Russell. The barring of FOX 5 cameras from the bill signing today was unacceptable and obviously an emotional reaction to our I-Team investigation. We’ve voiced out concerns to the Governor’s Office and hope that they will reconsider that decision.”
Deal’s spokesman Brian Robinson, when I called him, was still hot under the collar. He said the campaign never hid the fact Denise Deal ran the governor’s fund-raising campaign and having a family member do so is not illegal. He challenged me to Google the name “Southern Magnolia Capitol.” There was one site that immediately came up with her name attached to it: the Georgia Chamber of Commerce. (It was added, however, on May 10, just days before the report aired, so when Russell was first working on the piece, indeed, there was no sign of Deal’s connection with Southern Magnolia online.) He said she was compensated at a market rate. A P.O. box number Fox 5 identified as connected to Southern Magnolia was a clerical error, not a way to hide anything, he noted.
The person identified as campaign manager in the story Wilheit was the chairman, Robinson said, not the campaign manager, and he didn’t know all the details Fox 5 had showed him. Robinson thought they had “ambushed” him. The governor chose not to talk to Fox 5 about it because he didn’t want to be ambushed either, Robinson said.
He said the reason they blocked Gray was not anything Gray did but the fact the station did “a shoddy piece of journalism in which they should be embarrassed.” He is demanding an apology. He felt this was one way to punish Fox 5 because “we don’t have a TV station. We don’t have the power of the airwaves.”
Ironically, he said Deal has developed a good relationship with Fox 5 before this, noting the governor has has appeared on “Good Day Atlanta” since coming into office. “We’ve given them incredible access,” Robinson said. “That’s why this was so particularly upsetting to us.”
He said the story has “lots of innuendo but no context and very little facts.”

It’s really disturbing to see the GA state patrol following the instructions of the governor’s office instead of enforcing state law. What other illegal activities are the troopers doing at the direction of the governor’s office?

The Governor is a servant of the people, and should not exercise the power that has been entrusted to him maliciously.
If he did nothing wrong, how can you get ambushed? Get the facts from your people, share them with the public, move on.
Fox5 should have the same access that all other news outlets have. If this were an athlete, or an entertainer behaving like this, they would be blacklisted.

First of all what do you expect he is a politician which means he’s a liar and a cheat. Did any of you people actually look at his record before he was voted into office. I hate to remind you of this but the governor couldn’t get a real job outside of politics based on his credit worthiness. Every job I have applied for wants to run a criminal check and a credit check, so either vote them all out or quit crying once they take office.

Just shows yet again that ALL politicians, regardless of party affiliation are corrupt, could care less about the public and are only in office to funnel as much money into their bank accounts as possible. And you are still complaining about the political situation and nobody is listening.

This is indeed shoddy journalism. The story is the about the reporter’s search, and not about actual substance. His search was pretty poor. Was there an obligation for Southern Magnolia to list Ms. Deal on the databases he searched. No, so why list that as an example of coverup? Did he need to devote so much time to the PO box search without calling the politician’s office who incorrectly listed it, especially when the PO box was correctly listed on Gov. Deal’s disclosure? Nope, he turned a typo in another allegation of coverup. This was piss-poor journalism, and if it was about you or me rather than an elected official, we’d have a slam-dunk case for slander. Instead, this “journalist’s” only punishment was to have a reporter from his company excluded today. That is a slap on the wrist.

Deal is not going to change his stripes just because he is in the public eye now. All politicians have an entitlement issue. They think they are entitled to screw all the rest of us for the benefit of their friends and lobbyist. Just look at the financial shape of this country today. Everyone needs to quit crying about it because we put them there. And it has NOTHING to do with the party affiliation. Each party screws us-just in different ways!

Very disturbing! When you are a public official, you can expect to be questioned about actions and motives. If you have nothing to hide, you present your case and let the facts speak for themselves. Countries run by tyrants and despots ban the media and try to snuff out opposing voices. I didn’t expect this to happen in my own state. However, this yahoo did resign from Congress when he was being investigated for possible wrong doings in his family business under the guise of running for governor. It was because of this that I did not vote for him. I hope others find his actions today just as disturbing. Government must be open and transparent. Keeping a news organization out of a public event because it ran a story that you disliked makes it appear that its story had substance and you have something to hide.

Where they eat, drink, and be Merry ? Gather all that eye opening information and see if it leads to any personal decisions they may make in the public that could be viewed as questionable ?

You should never give a politician the benefit of the doubt – they all have a tendency to bend things the way they want to and what will benefit them the most. By the same token, you should never give the news media the benefit of the doubt. Most are liberal leaning and report as much info that is anti conservative as they can – they would not know the truth if it hit them up the side of the head. A good reporter looks for the facts and reports the facts – not taking things out of context or misreading, and not making misleading statements.

The Governor’s office can complain about “shoddy journalism” all they want, but not responding to the story and then putting limits on the media looks a whole lot worse than the original story.
So we now have gone from an unflattering piece about the Governor that only a fraction of the viewing audience likely even saw… to making the State Patrol look like stormtroopers and the Governor look like he’s about to be indicted.

I consider myself very conservative and very my anti mainstream media after the last Presidential election and with current reporting of the President. But the story Channel 5 did was factual and more illegal Dealings (a little pun) will be out before his term is over. Nathan Deal cannot stop the facts and if he wanted to hide from the facts he should have bowed out of the election. He was not the right Republican for the job and got the nomination by default.

It’s good to see the Governor of GA is throwing six figures worth of campaign funds to his daughter in law in such a opaque way… If they did nothing wrong, they would clear up any misunderstanding, or at least not be stupid enough to ban the station that did the reporting from a public news conference. That reaction only shows them as being corrupt, by using the GA STATE PATROL to BAN reporters they don’t like for getting too close to the truth. Great use of taxpayer resources…. What a joke.

Take a deeper look dude. Obama pitches a fit anytime someone puts him in his place and throws the truth on him, He is a complete cry baby and can’t handle the pressure of the truth. He has vowed to no longer give interviews to certain news stations, and interviewers. Turn this any way you want, but the fact still stands that no one in the media ever skewers Obama, but aims for Republicans. Be short sided and not believe that, but it shows to your intelligence if you don’t even somewhat agree with that. I can agree that there are negatives on both sides of these political parties, and I’m not naive to that, but the media favors the Liberal side of things.

Matter not. We will elect criminals and allow their families to receive government contracts despite their past.

This new immigration bill is modeled after Arizona legislation that never made it to becoming a law. The Ninth District Court, Judge Bolton eviscerated the AZ bill and now it is on its way to The Supremes. It would have been a wiser choice for the GA legislature to wait and see what is going to happen to the AZ and UT bills. The ACLU and the Federal Government are going to take this law apart in court and the thugs in the GA state house will be held up in court for the forseeable future.
An intelligent body of men and women would have waited on this racial profiling bill, but no one ever accused the men and women of the GA legislature of being intelligent. Good luck, the GA legislature and Deal just spent a lot of time and money on a law that will never pass a judicial review.

The big complaint the Deal campaign cited in the story was that Philip Wilheit was identified as “campaign manager” rather than “chairman.” It is worth noting that Wilheit was the “campaign manager” during the time in question – Deal’s run for Governor. It is also worth noting that Wilheit’s son, Philip Wilheit Jr. was appointed as a Board Member to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources by Nathan Deal. Wilheit Jr. – the son of the campaign manager/chairman identified his experience in hunting and fishing as qualifications for this appointment. Go figure…

If there is no truth to the story then he shouldn’t be upset. The fact that he is upset sems to me that he had something to hide & he is upset that FOX 5 reported the story. I am a republican born & & wrong os wrong no matter who the individual is. What happened to freedom of the press? Juston should not have been barred from a PUBLIC bill signing. Let me understand this:Nathan Deal signs the immigration bill in which one of the laws says that police will have powers to to arrest people who are suspected of being such, yet he wouldn’t let Justin Gray witness the signing of the bill? Well…well…well, who is the real illegal person here? If he was innocent, he should have nothing to be afraid of and let Justin to do his job.
Maybe it was also meant to for that to happen the signing of that bill is a national disgrace. It is not a great time in Georgia, it will be a hostile one. Let’s be honest, there is a racial agenda behind this bill. As I mentioned one of the laws under HB87 is that it gives the police powers arrest “suspected” illegal immigrant criminals( gee, I wonder what they are supposed to look like? ) and those who are in the the U.S.A illegally, but you know that some of those cops are going to abuse their powers and not only going to continue to harass them and other minorities as well and have then the nerve to say that still want you business. I hope boycotts and sickouts will prevail.

I would agree that the governor has a right to be mad if he feels that Fox 5 has treated him unfairly, but he can’t use the governors office to fight personal battles……and in this case it appears he’s done just that…..so this case should be heard by an investigative committee with no ties to either party !

I believe Gov. Nathan Deal is a crook. FOX 5 cameras and reporter Justin Gray being banned from the Immigration Bill signing could very well prove something isn’t right. Deal’s predecessor (Gov. Sonny Perdue) was a crook too… my grandmother and I haven’t forgotten about the “oaky woods” hubbub from a while back.
One thing to understand is that… Elections have consequences. Gov. Deal could be subject to impeachment, if an ethics investigation is to prove any wrong-doing. Gov. Deal could also be subject to recall election attempts… Georgia being one of several states with recall laws on the books.
The media landscape has changed drastically over the years. B&C had an interesting story (from April 26, 2011) about FCC Commissioner Michael Copps wanting to see better, and more accountable journalism… I believe the story applied more toward local TV news. Some might see the FCC Commissioner’s proposal of better, and more accountable journalism as a reinstatement of the Fairness Doctrine, in disguise. When Jim Axel was still living… he was the gold standard when it came to local TV news.

Who knew? Nathan Deal believes that the government is better equipped than private business to handle tasks that he considers vital to Georgian’s safety. It’s right here in the Congressional Report. Who will be the first from the Tea Party to scream “Socialist!”? Here is the quote from the report… “Representative Deal and his business partner maintain that although it was not in their financial interest to do so, at the third meeting they expressed to the Revenue Commissioner that the pro-
gram should not be changed. They argued that any inspection should be conducted by state-employed and authorized inspectors to ensure the safety of drivers on Georgia roads. Representative Deal and his business partner stated that state inspectors are often former body shop workers or law enforcement personnel who have experience with vehicle safety specifications. They explained that they were concerned that inexperienced, private inspectors would
jeopardize vehicle safety.
37. The Revenue Commissioner stated that the vehicle inspection program never covered the safety of vehicles. He stated that the state inspectors’ only role was to grant title to salvaged cars; thus,
their position was named ‘‘Salvage Title Inspectors.’’ These ‘‘Salvage Title Inspectors’’ examined the title of the vehicle, with a limited examination of the physical vehicle itself, to make proper title

Interesting read here. I never saw such demands for “transparency” when the news concerned the past administration of the mayor’s office in Atlanta. Where was the outcry for “transparency” when the immediate past mayor was in office? Where did those millions of advertising funds from the airport that never got collected go? Where did the missing budgetary funds finally get sorted out to? We have seen none of these questions answered during or after the reign of the former mayor in Atlanta. Why not? Why is no one seeking to find those funds from over-charges in water-bills and other assorted funds collected? You want “transparency” in state government? How about some in local government, too? Just like Barack has been banning Hannity and many Fox reporters, so can Governor Deal ban reporters when he chooses. The difference is that Hannity and many Fox reporters are reporting the facts, unlike Dale Russells story. Those of you against this should be on a story about Barack doing it, not this story. You people are like the kettle calling the pot black.
Republicans rule and don’t forget it. The mess the Democrats have made is in the process of being straightened out. They’ve been so irresponsible that it will take years. So, stand by and do nothing like you’ve always done while responsible men act like men and gets the job done. But go ahead and get your BarackHandout while they’re still available because I can assure you that your handout programs are going away quickly. First initiative…..Illegal immigration bill – “Round em up, move em out.” That would probably save us around $65 million alone in our state and create 400,000 jobs. Imagine what it would do for our entire country while Barack sits around and does nothing for our country about illegal immigration. Can’t wait for the 2012 election to help Barack and his cronies find another residence.

My family and I watched Dale Russell’s report last night and were deeply disturbed by what we saw.
Mr. Deal, by denying Mr. Gray access to a public meeting was in clear violation of the Georgia Open Meetings Act, which states:
“…The public at all times shall be afforded access to meetings declared open to the public pursuant to subsection (b) of this Code section. Visual, sound, and visual and sound recording during open meetings shall be permitted….”
http://www.gfaf.org/open_meetings.html
If Mr. Deal had nothing to hide, then he would not have had to retaliate against this (or any other) news media outlet by using law enforcement to bar their access to a public meeting.
When all is said and done, it is hoped that Mr. Russell and his investigative team of reporters will garner (at least) an Emmy nomination for
uncovering the REAL truth as to why they were
barred from this meeting…and those responsible
are held fully accountable for their actions.

The state’s business and the governor of the state’s business should be an open book while he’s in office. Particularly any dealings with his family should be disclosed. To ban a news organization simply makes their point of view look correct—better just to issue a clear and simple statement that corrects any misstatements in the news article. I’m sure all the other media outlets would be glad to publish that for the Governor. If this continues then the nickname Shady Deal should stick. He ran for governor so he should be willing to have his affairs be an open book. All Government needs more sunshine not less.

I am just happy that Deal signed the immigration bill….now companies are going to help accountable for hiring illegals & taking good paying jobs away from Americans who pay taxes & would love to pay taxes because they are working…we need to clean up the illegal crap we have here; tired of seeing them standing on the corner with their cell phones waiting for some contractor to pick them up & pay them a few hundred dollars Cash so they can go home to their multi -family complexes go shopping with food stamps & buy better food than I can..so Thank you Gov. Deal for having the stance & signing this bill into law. Who the hell cares if they blocked Fox 5 from the signing…I mean really?

Feel good about the fact that the hillbilly Deal family is headed off on a two week European vacation on your dime. That stinking coward waited until the day before his vacation to sign the HB87 bill. Then he bars a news outlet from attending the ceremony out of spite. I hope Fox 5 runs the Denise Deal story every day, three times a day for the next two weeks while Nathan Steal is in Europe. In fact, I’ll be watching Fox 5 News exclusively from now on.

Good journalism or bad, let the public make their own determination. But blocking the media from a public event, by force, using state troopers, sets a very bad precedent. I hope this isn’t a sign of more to come from our gov. and his staff.

I did not vote for Mr. Deal, but so far his performance in office has not bothered me. Having said that, people on here defending what happend between the media and state troopers who are an extension of state government is glaring state controlled media. You simply cannot spin it any other way. It was also petty. The office of governor should symbolize dignity and should not bar the media out petty, personal spite.

People on both sides need to stop looking at politicians as they are saints, and will conduct themselves as such. If a politician is giving his family business, from his campaign or state money, PEOPLE SHOULD CARE. Why do you prefer not to be informed?
Politicians are PUBLIC SERVANTS and need to be held accountable for how they make money, raise money, and where it is going, WHILE THEY ARE IN OFFICE!
Trying to block the press from covering state business, for purposes of revenge, is unacceptable.
I guess freedom of the press is not important to the posters here.

Well all the hillbillies and rednecks voted for Deal just because he was a Repub. If they would have did their research (oops that requires reading) they would have seen how corrupt and bankrupt (morally and financially) he really is. Georgia doesn’t seem to care about being a forward thinking state. They only seem to care about UGA football and voting for whatever backwater yokel runs on the Republican side of the ticket. Two things appear to be true. First, Nathan Deal IS a crook and may have earned the nickname Nazi Deal for his hamhanded attempt to control the media.
Second, Fox News isn’t much better at the local level than at the national level. Sensationalist, half the facts, and their own slant on things.
Now the clincher – Politics and government is much more than ‘what’s good for business.’ It is about what is good for all citizens. Not just the governor and cronies.

Scrutiny comes with power. It matters not if it is because you are wealthy, an elected official or pastor of a mega church. Close scrutiny comes with the position. It amazes me that people pursue these positions of power, then shout that they are being “ambushed” or “victimized” when the press inquires into their activities.

This is about Deal, the guy who ran home from national politics to get out of the heat, acting like a 5 year old, a badly behaved one at that. If they throw him out of this office, or he leaves of his own accord, the locals will next elect him mayor of Gainesville or Hall County commisioner. “face the truth”….see here you go believing what Russell has written. This is Gov. Deal’s exact point. People like you believe it because some reporter wrote it.. Gov. Deal will teach people like the reporter and you to understand the facts before you run your mouth. He doesn’t take crap off no one and stands his ground. Which is why he signed the immigration bill…he’ll stand up to B.O. and his crony feds and Ga. will defeat the feds attempt to control this state. Get the facts and then come back and let’s talk. And yes, check the budget for B.O. it’s there alright, you just have to look for it while B.O. tries to hide it from the taxpayers but his mother in law gets a check. Again, you have a problem with the parallel comparing B.O.’s payments to relatives to Gov. Deal’s. Try again and you’ll see that pointing out the comparison is relative. You Barrack Hussein fans can’t see past your nose and when he’s in the hot box you try to defend him. There’s no more defense for him how. The Republicans have him and the Dems on the run.

Rich: There is enough here for everyone and the more people who can share in the prosperity the more products and houses will be purchased and the more tax money will come to the state.
For a fact, 80 to 90 percent of the illegal residents in this state (and nation) are not paying soc sec, state and federal income taxes). Over 90% do not pay property taxes..which pays for our SCHOOL SYSTEMS. Yet well over 35% of our school systems are attended by children of these same illegals. FACT.
Grady Hospital estimates that $25,000,000 of their medical services (Emerg Room and Child Birth) were NOT paid by illegals. Emergency Rooms are FULL of illegals that are not paying a dime. Something is wrong with this picture…and Deal made the right call on this one.
If one is not a legal citizen & paying their fair share of taxes they should not be benefiting from the services that the LEGAL citizens are having to pay more and more far. The main reason our school systems are financially broke is having to take existing resources to teach ENGLISH, to those that are not even paying anyway.

Having said that, this has to score in the top 5 of political PR stupid moves of all time. Hopefully the media will do their jobs an rip the cover off of politicians’ malfeasance (as opposed to shootings, stabbings, apartment fires, and – really??? – celebrity goings-on) and keep We the People informed about what bad stewards of OUR money these goobers are.
As for Guvna Deal, we’ll see what comes out in the wash. One thing I can say about him, he seems to have put out more effort in five months than Sonny ever did in eight years.

A minimal amount of investigating on your part would have uncovered the fact that the Chamber of Commerce listing in the Google results was added on May 10. The governor’s office is using you. They knew you wouldn’t try to verify how recent the Chamber of Commerce listing was, and they were right.
The governor’s office caught wind of the Fox story before it was broadcast and pre-emptively had Mrs. Deal join the Chamber of Commerce (look into it, they list her’s as a new company).

Why wasn’t anything done under Bush(es) terms, Reagan, Clinton, etc. Now it is all of sudden Obama’s fault. it is a ploy, by the GOP. They ruined the economy from 2000-2008, and now have to find a scapegoat. If these so called immigrant law supporters were sincere, then why didn’t they pass laws during previous presidential or governor terms?

Often however, that soft clouds isn’t what exactly you had planned and can often times spoil an otherwise good photograph, especially if you thinking about enlarging it.

I have realized that of all forms of insurance, medical care insurance is the most questionable because of the issue between the insurance plan company’s necessity to remain afloat and the consumer’s need to have insurance. Insurance companies’ profits on health and fitness plans are incredibly low, so some organizations struggle to profit. Thanks for the concepts you reveal through this blog.
