Nick Cannon starts new countdown show on V-103

AP

AP

Nick Cannon – actor, stand-up comic, TV host, radio personality – is about to become a daddy. But that hasn’t stopped his workaholic ways. He just keeps adding more to his plate.

Starting Saturday morning, April 23, he will be heard locally on V-103 doing a new weekly syndicated countdown music show. You’ll hear him do a top 20 urban music countdown. (He also does a pop version but not here.)

“I’ve been in the music industry the majority of my life,” said the 30-year-old husband of Mariah Carey in an interview with me Friday afternoon by phone from New York. “I’ve always paid attention to what’s going on the charts.”

Cannon already does a morning show at a top 40 station (WXRK-FM 92.3) in New York City, something he launched in January, 2010. He hopes to syndicate that as well down the road. “I love how intimate radio can be,” he said. “I’m at my best there talking directly to the people.”

He is emulating Ryan Seacrest in many ways by hosting a popular TV show (”America’s Got Talent”), executive producing a reality TV show (”Son of a Gun” on MTV about rap star Cory Gunz), doing morning radio and now a countdown show. Plus, he has acting and stand-up credits on top of that. (He even has a Showtime stand-up comedy show next month on May 14.)

“I have ADD,” he said. “My attention is always on a bunch of different things. I’m kind of the perfect type to juggle all this.”

Cannon is a bit of a goofball at times. He actually gave out a personal phone number on the air a few days ago so people could leave messages. (He admitted to me that he actually has several phone numbers so giving one away is not a big deal.)

With Carey ready to drop twins any second, he is set to go to the hospital no matter where he is. “I know exactly what I got to do,” he said. “I’ll be like Clark Kent turned into Superman.”

He is looking forward, he said, to being a dad. “It’s been an amazing journey already. It’s a journey that won’t stop. It gets even bigger. I can’t wait.” (He even did a rap song for his unborn kids recently.)

But he isn’t sure how much time he is going to take off when the babies come. “I hear I’ll have my hands full,” he said. (Though given his financial stature, he’ll have the benefit of nannies and such.)

When he was in Atlanta last week for “America’s Got Talent” auditions, his favorite spot to go was Waffle House. “I had steak and eggs, smothered and covered hash browns, a side of grits and a side of bacon with two sweet teas. A lot of food. Oh, and a waffle!”

@BOBT, if you think Frank and Wanda are Coonery and Buffoonery, turn your dial to the right two notches and listend to (Uncle) Tom Joiner and J (Ignorant) Anthony Brown . . . I thought Stepin’ Fetchit was dead until I heard them during the Bishop Eddie Long debacle . . . All they needed to complete the act was Al Jolson on the piano, Hattie McDaniel and Butterfly McQueen, and maybe a little Clark Gable . . . Sorry, Scarlet, but I don’t give a damn!!!

I can really agree with anyone about Frank and Wanda. Im not gonna lie, they have set us back about 100 years. I really am dissappointed about Frank. With Wanda you can expect foolishness from a foolish person. Her ghetto ways always surface when they need to.

I’m not feelin’ the Frank & Wanda show either – more Frank than Wanda. Frank is out of touch with reality. I love how he says “hell”, “damn” and other choice words all morning, but then ends the show with an inspiration vitamin?!? No thanks. I’ll stick to the Flintstones, Frank. The sad thing is that Steve Harvey’s show is nonsense. I don’t know why Rickey Smiley got passed day 1 with that train wreck that has his name on it. Thank you, God, for CDs!

YOU ARE AN IDIOT… You live Marietta…Right outside the perimeter. Close to ATLANTA.Obviously you ignored the fact that Atlanta’s boundaries have expanded in the past 15 yrs and will continue to do so.

Not to mention there are more “RURAL” radio stations in this city than the 2 rap.. 1 pop stations…

Why would you guys listen to something you don’t like…Sounds stupid to me

@ST- Yeah, you certainly peeped Frank Ski’s hole card . . . I can’t understand how someone can encourage people to go to strip joints and night clubs (of course that’s where he makes his money), and then turn around and preach about the virtues of Christianity. . . oh, I know how he does it, just like most other pathology in the African American community . . . its tolerated both by the people and the clergy . . .

V103 is the worst radio station we have in Atlanta. Frank Ski is just a clown. No one takes him serious at all. Wanda is ignorant. Why is she even on radio. She is not funny and nothin intelligent ever comes out her mouth. Its definetly a shame that our own radio station that respresents where we live is hosted by a clown and baboon.

Frank Ski . . . Baltimore’s gain is ATL’s loss . . . but he does have a kid’s foundation, I have to give him props for that . . . but I would like to speak to his former English teachers because he’s got some serious grammar issues . . . but what the heck, I haven’t met but a few African Americans here in the South who can or will say “We were” instead of “We was . . . ” I can’t understand how that is so difficult . . . and I’m not just talking about pants-sagging hip-hopsters . . . I’m talking about educators, businesspeople, politicians, and others who should know and do better . . .How can we fulfill Dr. King’s and Dr. DuBois’s great visions if we who are members of the so-called black intelligensia sound and act just as ignorant as someone without a high school education??? but I guess that those so-called educated folk are afraid that they will sound “white” if they speak the King’s English correctly . . . then again, which would you rather say, ” I am unemployed,” or ” I done got me a job yesterday”? . . . As for Wanda . . .talk about ghetto-fabulous . . . she fits every negative stereotype of African American women . . . loud, ignorant, boisterous, ghetto, religious yet vulgar, vulgar yet religious, overweight (80% of African American women fit this category, according to recent reports) . . .criminal intents . . . but deep within her heart I’m sure Jesus sees greatness . . . glad I’m not him because he sure does have to to some deep-sea fishing to pull greatness out of us . . .

@TIWJM- The fact that they’re adding Nick Cannon is a bad (or a good) sign . . . it means Frank and Wanda have it their Peter Principle Learning Curve . . . in these times of great economic social upheaval, people, and in this case African Americans, need to hear conversation that has substance . . . it doesn’t have to be as dull as CSpan, but this 24 hour Amos and Andy schtick has its limits, even in the normally very tolerant of foolishness African American community . . . why can’t Frank and Wanda, or Tom Joiner and JAnthony Brown mix their schtick with some serious public policy/political science talk . . . they seem bent on continuing the very negative assumption that all African Americans want is slapstick, Stepin’ Fetchit, Yassuh bossin’ coonery and buffoonery . . . @YourPoliticalAnimal. You seem to have many criticisms about the African American community and culture, some of which are legitimate. I’m curious, what are you doing to help change the landscape of what is obviously frustrating you so much? Do you volunteer at a Boys and Girls Club, are you a mentor to any young men, do you donate to any causes that aim to help the African American community? It’s very easy to sit back, point fingers and place blame. It’s much more difficult to roll up your sleeves and do something to help change the situation.

I have admired Nick’s hustle since his days on Nickolodean. This man is indeed a businessman and knows how to make sound business deals that will keep him in the limelight as well as keep his pockets full. I will not be surprised when we hear the hundreds of millions he will be worth before he hits 35 years of age. Following Ryan Seacrest’s footsteps is not a bad idea when it comes to producing various shows. Many are laughing about he and Mariah but he is the one with the last laugh — all the way to the bank.

@JP- Yes, I do contribute to the African American community by (1) raising and taking care of my own children and not asking you or some athlete to do it for me, (2) sleeping in my own bed at night and not someone else’s (3) setting an example for others to follow, whether African American or other (4) going to work, earning damn good money and paying my taxes on time, not living off of someone else, (5) As far as mentoring, I’ve taught for almost 25 years in some of the worst hellholes in America . . . while you were sitting in a cubicle I was putting up with your children all day . . . (6) by realizing Dr. King’s dream that “It’s not enough to be a good Negro teacher, a good Negro preacher, a good Negro lawyer, a good Negro doctor, etc., for if you’re only a good Negro professional, you’ve already failed your matriculation exam into the University of Integration . . . ” , (7) by staying apprised of the political-social-economic issues of the day and not being content with the modern-day Stepin’ Fetchit, Yassuh bossin’, Coonery and Buffoonery that’s out there on many, though certainly not all, African American radio and other media outlets . . . Tamra at 2pm on MSNBC would be a positive example of what we need . . . Any Questions???

I agree Jp. But, what really interest me, is how people can have so many criticisms and still watch and listen. I stopped listening to Frank and Wanda a long time ago. He seemed a bit off and she reminds me of the person you avoid in high school. However, unlike many of you, I feel these people are on air, because people, somewhere enjoy what they do. Furthermore, Nick Cannon is a young Black American Male who has been in the entertainment business since he was a young teenager. I think we should be proud of him. I do not ever remember hearing about him being on drugs, abusing alcohol, or going to jail. I would say, he has done a good job in his young life. He may seemed a bit immature to some, but he obviously gets the job done, otherwise the powers that be, would not continue to hire him. Lastly, Mariah has certainly had her choice of lovers. Nick is the one she chose to make a life with and more importantly, to be the Father or her children. To me that says a lot.

Hey, “Your Political Animal”, you got that right!
Hey “JP” sit’cha butt down, please!

The reason Frank Ski has bad diction, allocution, and grammar is because he’s basically uneducated (no collegiate pedigree whatsoever) and fundamentally as ignorant (not dumb) as that red brick hangin’ on the side of your house. But it’s not the slowness of his “uptake” that’s fascinating to listen to and watch, it’s the blatant hypocrisies that he abides in himself:

(1) Playing violent, sexually explicit, and anti-social music at 7, 8 and 9 in the morning WHILE telling kids they need to stay in school, practice celibacy and be socially responsible. Well, if you’re on the radio, Frank, playing that kind of music that early in the morning to young, impressionable, horny and confused kids, you really think the first thing on their minds is math, english, spanish, reading, or social studies after getting hefty doses and doses of degenerated music? The next time you hear him play a Rick Ross, Trey Songs, or Li’l Wayne tune that early in the morning, think about this: does he let HIS kids listen to that garbage that early in the morning? Of course not. Of course not, Frank! You and the Mrs. are gonna make sure your kids aren’t “infected” since that would interfere with their learning at the private schools that you probably spend $30,000 a year sending them to.

(2) Frank spent time on the phone one day last year with a certified, bone-headed gangster’s mother (Demetrius Flenory, AKA Meech), and actually sympathized with her and consoled her about her son being locked up for 30 years on various organized crime convictions WHILE simultaneously palling around with members of Dekalb, Clayton, Fulton County law enforcement officials at his annual wine-tastings in his home. Now understand, this fellow Meech ran one of the most “successful” criminal enterprises (Black Mafia Family, BMF) in the United States that sold tons of drugs, murdered countless number of people, and continued as a main source of drugs in our communities.

(3) Making soaring, high-falutin’ speeches at various business, education, political and social functions to extol his middle and upper class values/virtues as if he’s some kind of pillar in the community WHILE at the same time ignorantly yelling into the microphone in one Atlanta club after another that “we gon’ tear this mutha-fu@@ah down cause we gon’ get fu@@ed up tonight”.

(4) Talkin’ hood-smack from 6 till 9:45 AM after which he to reads off that “inspirational vitamin” that Eddie Long gives him to read every day WHILE at the same time supporting, condoning or excusing anti-social, immoral/degenerate and/or criminal behavior from a whole host big-wig chums (TI, Eddie Long, Big Meech, R. Kelley, Bill Campbell, etc.).

(5) Although he presents himself as this self-deprecating, free-giving, philanthropist whose only interest is to serve the poor, disadvantaged and downtrodden, he never fails to poke a finger in their collective eyes by bragging about what he’s got, who knows or where he’s been (at his Foundation’s expense). Whether he’s sipping wine from a $700 bottle of Opus 1, traipsing around Europe, Africa or Asia on foundation generated funds or bragging about the food he and family eats, this man instinctively knows how to keep his audiences salivating and hanging on every word of his latest adventure! The masses he claims to serve and represent are poor, desperate and gullible, and Frank Ski knows takes how to advantage of it.

(6) Constantly telling people to “give back” to the community WHILE at the same time all he is interested in is “GETTING A NET BENEFIT BACK” for his private persona, celebrity and bank account. There is nothing this man does for anyone that is not expressly intended to burnish his radio show, his image, personal well-being, status in the community.

The bottom line with Frank Ski is that the man is rich, successful and famous YET he has no moral scruples! And although he’s a train wreck of morality, Frank Rodriquez does not care about what anyone thinks because at the end of the day, he’s still rich, successful, famous AND on the radio everyday! In sum, at the end of the day Frank is just a record spinning loud-mouth douchebag with no moral compass who is still able to sleep like a baby at night because he lacks a conscience.

I Agree With Bob!

April 23rd, 2011
1:53 pm

Bob is exactly right about Frank Ski and Wanda! I’m so sick of that grown, rusty man trying so hard to be cool and hip. I truly believe he thinks he’s 20 years old, it’s over, it’s a wrap, he’s middle age, deal with it! Talking out the side of his neck and supporting murderers, drug dealers and criminals. Both of the idiots had Gucci Man on the show, talking about him and to him as if he were some sort of college professor!

The other day, he’s on the radio talking about how he’s at the gas pump and the meter start moving BEFORE he started pumping gas, yet he doesn’t give the location of the gas station and he stated that he didn’t even bother to go in and say something about it. “I just paid. I was tired.” Seriously?! But hey, he has the money, so who cares about the common person barely able to buy food, let alone gas. He has a voice to report things like this, yet chooses not to.

Their show does nothing for the community! Plus, they are just to damn old to act like they do! I rarely listen to them, but I make it a point to, because I must hear what the kids in the community are exposed to. I thank God for the CAU radio, that’s the station I listen to in the morning.

@ Political Animal – Don’t blame Frank Ski’s ignorance on his former teachers and there are a whole lot of fat, loud white people walking around. Stick to point, race has nothing to with, these are just to ignorant, self-absorbed, middle-age idiots.

@BobTisdale . . . sounds like you somehow have the inside scoop . . . I almost had my head chopped off the other day because I questioned why Bishop Eddie Long, who swore that he would “use five stones as David did,” to fight the homosexual coercion charges against him, is now mediating in court. I suggested that this implied, if not explicitly stated guilt . . . I was only seeking clarification, but you would have thought that I shot MLK, Jr., the way that I was attacked . . . I asked, “Did he apologize to the congregation for the pain and embarrassment that he has caused them?” Did he even consider stepping aside, at least until this matter is cleared up, and maybe, at least temporarily, appointing Dr. Rev. Bernice King to the pulpit, seeing she and her family’s name carry tremendous gravitas in the ATL community? . . . but no, he’s still wearing muscle shirts in the pulpit . . . it’s almost as though he’s thumbing his nose at God and his congregation . . .

YourPoliticalAnimal

@IAgreeWithBob- No, I’m not blaming Frank Ski’s teachers . . . that’s just a common colloquialism when one wonders what happened to a person’s basic abilities . . . for example, you might wonder who my math teachers were if I’m terrible in math . . . not their fault . . . but mine . . . I know that we as African Americans have a long history of code-switching . . . talking one way in front of some and another way in front of others . . . but when you have an audience of several million, as FSki does, it would behoove you to “represent” black intellectualism better . . . We can’t fulfill Dr. King’s and Dr. Dubois’s and President Obama’s visions if we’re acting like Stepin’ Fetchit and Skillet and Leroy . . .

Bob Tisdale

April 23rd, 2011

@Your Political Animal:

I agree with you.

Anyone who is even remotely informed about American jurisprudence knows that once you enter into “negotiations” or with a party (or several parties as is the case with the right reverend) who have accused you of sexual misconduct/malfeasance, there is an extremely high likelihood that there is some weight of TRUTH in whatever it is that you were accused of doing by said parties. It’s just that it’s easier, faster and more profitable for those young boys and their lawyers to “cash” in rather than go thru a difficult trial where even their dirty laundry is exposed and the outcome is subject to the whims of the gods.

Of course, Frank Ski has long been one of the Rev. Long’s staunchest supporters/apologists since he has long (pardon the pun) made direct or in-kind contributions to Frank’s foundation so it shouldn’t surprise anyone that Frank’s not going to throw his benefactor under the bus like just like that. In other words, Frank knows on which side his toast is buttered.

Finally, Eddie Long knows that his flock is prepared to put this behind (pardon the pun) them and forgive him once an “undisclosed” settlement is reached so he will continue to fleece them. But this man is a recidivist. He will continue to do things (or past actions will continue to be uncovered) that will give rise to when the next scandal surfaces. At the end of the day, anyone who believes that Eddie Long is innocent of these accursations/charges will also believe that there’s a man on the moon and that it is made of cheese.

Look, the folks who support Eddie Long’s style of “Muscle Ministry” are folks who will never wake up, act in their own best interest or banish this down-lo charlatan to the bath houses of San Francisco. They’re just not going to do it. Just not!

Just thought I would skim through

He’s (FSki) is pimping God’s church for mammon gain . . . and now Long has lost the authority that a Bishop needs to spiritually discipline/correct Ski . . . how can Long say anything to him??? It’s like Moses killing the Egyptian and then telling his fellow Israelites to stop fighting, whereas one of them replied, “Who are you to tell me . . . will you kill me as you did that Egyptian???” . . . that’s why I said it might have been a good idea to put someone in that pulpit, at least temporarily, who could restore order and honor to God’s church . . . but no, Popeye had to reign supreme . . .
