THE CELEBRITY APPRENTICE -- Season: 11 -- Pictured: Garey Busey -- Photo by: Virginia Sherwood/NBC
Here’s a word association game nobody would win. Donald Trump, Manhattan, Gary Busey and Celebrity Apprentice. What comes next? Last night, try “camping.”
Camping World, an RV retailer and supplier, decided to work with “Celebrity Apprentice” last night. No, NBC did not send the “Celebrity Apprentice” cast into the woods in an RV, though that would have been deeply amusing. (Busey trying to start a fire! Meat Loaf cooking marshmallows! John Rich doing a campfire sing a long!)
Instead, Camping World camped itself in Manhattan to promote itself for two hours. It brought four RVs into New York City where the teams had to create “experiences” and a “branding presence.” And since it doesn’t have a store anywhere near New York City (and why should it?), it to create a fake retail site so the teams could buy supplies for its experience.
And it’s obvious that very few of these actors, athletes, models and singers have ever camped, much less spent time in RVs. “I’m black. I ain’t never even slept outside,” said NeNe Leakes in her usual blunt (if not grammatical) style.
The men’s team Backbone decided to give the project manager title to Gary Busey because they felt he was unfocused and wanted him to prove himself. The women’s team ASAP opted for supermodel Niki Taylor.
Neither team came up with terribly creative ideas or slam-dunk themes. The producers have fun with Taylor’s “Camping in the 21st Century” concept Taylor kept saying 20th century. In fact, she has fellow model Hope Dworaczyk go to Google to confirm that yes, we are in the 21st century. And the editors catch Taylor still saying 20th century after that. (Haha! She’s a model! Get it?)
Both teams seemed a bit frayed and lost at points. While Meat Loaf, Richard Hatch and John Rich worked on branding and messaging, the other four – Mark McGrath, Lil Jon, Jose Canseco and Busey – did very little. A neurotic McGrath and annoyed Lil Jon fretted a lot about not doing anything while the other two sat on lawn chairs and relaxed. When Ivanka Trump stopped by to check in, Canseco seemed virtually comatose and didn”t even bother to stand up to greet her. (His excuse later: he was on a break, then claimed more strength and stamina than anybody else. Uh huh.)
Later, McGrath took video of Canseco and Busey throwing a baseball. He was so convinced they were going to lose that he figured he could use that in the boardroom later. (He didn’t need to.) Fortunately, when Rich, Meat Loaf and Hatch came back, they make the place look pretty good in the end.
Rich. who clearly worked his tuckus off, also came up with a simple, catchy country theme song for Camping World, which impressed the Camping World CEO Marcus Lemonis.
The women more or less got along, though Star Jones opined about the lack of a vision. In Taylor’s mind, it was a “camping experience.” What more theme did you need?
During the actual challenge, the men’s exterior site looked sharper thanks to the greenery and big “Camping World” banners. Their presentation was also more energetic with Busey coming alive, putting on a frenetic show for curiosity seekers and the CEO. The women’s interiors were much better thanks to their decorating prowess and the low-key but sweet LaToya Jackson surprisingly gave an adept tour of her RV. The Camping World CEO later said she did a better job than some of his own sales staff.
But despite the men’s early ennui, they won. It was back to the women to fight it out again. Except Niki didn’t fight. She grabbed the sword and landed right on it, saying all the women worked out great (despite a silly spat with Dionne Warwick over where Hope was where Hope felt Dionne wasn’t talking to her in a respectful tone.)
So Trump just fired Taylor and she was out lickety split.
- Here are some other notable moments and observations from the night:
- The men’s team talked about demographics and camping. When Rich tried out his theme song, Canseco rejected it, saying it would turn off the non-country crowd (”too hick-ish”). Then Hatch helpfully added that the country crowd is “less educated” and “backward.” Rich took offense. “If anyone in this van wants to step up on that subject, I’m will be more than happy to square off with anybody,” he warned. “Please be careful how you bring up my audience.” Hatch backed off quickly.
- NeNe Leakes’ first camera-ready confrontation with Star Jones was brief. After the second challenge, moments after Star Jones and Warwick returned from the boardroom, NeNe gave Jones some advice, prefacing it by saying she keeps it “100,” as in “100% real:” “Stop trying to be the damn project manager!”
Jones said: “I promise you I will not step into that role… trust me!” NeNe, to the cameras but not to Jones, said she didn’t believe that at all, saying she will take over because “that’s Star.”
True that. This lays the seeds for future confrontations.
- Atlanta’s Lil Jon also got into a conflict. Busey kept cutting off the rap singer. “Lil Jon turned out to be an antagonist for me,” Busey observed later. “But it’s his issue, not mine.” Lil Jon: “I wasn’t feeling him after a certain amount of time… definitely not a good project manager.” Even after they won, they kept right on arguing. Busey felt like there was an “alliance” against him, including Hatch, Meat Loaf, McGrath and Lil Jon. Busey has good reason to be paranoid.
- Warwick, at age 70, is clearly not the most energetic. (NeNe gives her a break: “I see Dionne does not do much but she is 70. When I’m 70, I won’t want to do much either.”) Marlee Matlin critiques her as someone who does what she is told but nothing more. Warwick, in the boardroom (at least what we saw), keeps her trap shut.
- The four celebrities likeliest to make it to the finals, based on the first three episodes are Meat Loaf, John Rich, Marlee Matlin and Star Jones. All have fire in their belly to win this. Canseco? Not so much. McGrath may be too neurotic. NeNe’s temper and relative lack of business experience could hurt her. Jackson is too sweet. Dworaczk is eye candy. Busey is a wild card and way too out there. Dionne is too passive-aggressive. Lil Jon is wild card and a bit hard to read at this stage in terms of his potential leadership abilities.

i dont know where to start. the show is just that, a tv show for entertainment purposes. everyone on that show is making more money from trump and the network, than most people on this blog will see (maybe except for rodney, grin). donald s, you are an idiot. glenda briley, i truly hope that is not your real name. back to bama– do you even understand what you wrote–because we sure don’t. b real, just stop, lmbo, they do not get you at all. dreniesha, if you think the majority of rap artists are really into the life they rap about…. i…i…don’t even worry about it–i cannot address your issues. love how john rich stood up for his fans. loved how he worked. nicky was indeed a class act. dionne? bless her heart. not sure why you people think she will suddenly change from someone she has always been.

carlaroqs – artists sing/write about their lives? right? or are rappers/hip hoppers fakers? Their fans “relate” to their “stories about life” – right? These guys are artists? right?

@Dreneisha- unfortunately many youth labor under that illusion. but again, not all rappers, “hip hoppers” are living the lives that are heralding in their songs.

Watching these folks and their actions and reactions is really eye-opening. I know I personally need to remember that what you are when you’re younger is usually what you are when you are older, only magnified. I know I have a lot to work on! Hopefully some of these younger ladies will see how Dionne Warwick is acting and make a change for the better now. Age deserves respect, but it is not a “get out of jail free” card to act however you want.

@carlaroqs – ok – from your answer then, I will change my questions to a statement.
Then they are not artists. Rappers/hip hoppers are fakes/posers. Their fans “relate” to their “stories about life” – so their fan base is still as I called it. These posers are just making their living off of adicts and trafficers.

Didn’t appreciate Dionne calling Niki a hussy. Dionne also just stood around when the ladies first went shopping; and it was a losing decision to forget the greenery. I remember Dionne as always
being someone who thought very highly of herself; and Star is more of the same. Yes, they are both racists. Are they likeable? Heck, no!

It seems to me that the men either work to help the team or just don’t work at all while some of the women (Star and Dionne most notably) work to undermine whoever the team leader is. They just reinforce the stereotype that a woman has to be a bitch to get along in business. Star Jones gives the female gender a bad name. And ‘The Donald’ certainly doesn’t help, spending several minutes talking about Lisa Rinna’s lips!

actually, i am neither an “addict”, nor a “trafficker” and i listen to hip hop sometimes. i am very straight laced and i also listen to gospel, christian, 80’s pop, and some rock and roll. i think it is called being well rounded. i like the beat of hip hop, the words and rhythm of gospel and the beat and words of popular white, 80’s music. jan, interesting that as vocal as dionne was most of what she said, she kinda muttered hussy! i missed it and had to rewind to catch it. i agree with you mandy– i may need to work on some changes starting today!

@carlaroqs – thought we were sterotyping here. I think I missed the part where sterotyping was only supposed to apply to those who listen to country music (for which you did not do, but the person I was original responding to did).
I am a black woman raised on a country way of life and listen to country music (and always have – along with some other types such as jazz and gospel). I listen to country for the stories about the “way of life” and I relate to it. I don’t listen to rap because of the stories about the “way of life”, as I don’t even want to relate to it. Generally, people listen to music they relate to. While they may dance to whatever the “club” is playing, they don’t sit and listen to club music.
And, the reality is, you are someone who listens to some music for the beat. But, a large number of rap fans are just that for what it provides them emotionally – the stories about the way of life. Country music may tell stories of some bad stuff, it is balanced with the good and it doesn’t glamorize the bad (anymore). Rap music still glamorizes a thug way of life and gives fuel to its audience to live that way.
I mean Brad Paisley and Kenny Chesney haven’t shot at each other lately. Where is Biggie Smalls and why is he there? The lifestyle he glamorized, and by other participants. Where is Tupac Shakur and why is he there? The lifestyle he glamorized, and by other participants. What about Jam-Master Jay? The list is pretty long.

Diionne was a star back in the caveman day, but acts like she better than anybody. Why is she moves so slow? I am waiting for NENE to put a depend on Dionne and maybe force a B12 shot down that big mouth or a iron pill, That all she able to move is her mouth.
And Star Jones, I know she lost weight, but the clothes she has make her butt look like a sack off flour half use,We know you are a lawyer, we also know you marry a gay man, and lie to people on tv about how you lost all that weight.
I went to a place to eat the other day, And while waiting in line glance over and seen a goldfish , I thought Star what are you doing here

I find Dionne Warwick, and Star Jones, to be very witchy like. I had no idea that Ms Warwick was like that off stage….wow. And Lisa Rinna, like Nikki, did not deserve to be fired…which proves to me that Mr Trump just keeps the ones that causes drama on the show for ratings…plain and simple. I for one, like Gary Busey, and after he is fired, I don’t think I’ll even watch.

On tonight show I was really disapointed in NENE management skills…hello!! she made a statement to Deon saying that she isn’t nobody’s babysitter so that is why she said “ok” to her leaving …but what a real manager would of done was ..first ask was everything ok and ask what can she do to help..and then if it wasn’t an emergency she should of let her knew that she needed her to stay because they are a team and you never know what they may need her for ..but end it with ..now of course I can’t make u stay but if you really must leave ..then go..
at least that way it would of been a clear understanding with both parties.. I think NeNe mindset was not being a manger but being a competitor against her team!! (basically, u do what u do and I’m going to do me.. self-gain..don’t think teamwork was in her head at all) sorry ..but call it like I see it …!

Dionne Warwick is one ignorant. lazy, selfish has-been. Chewing gum is so trash, just like her.
