680/The Fan’s Chadd Scott said he was fired for Tweets about Delta Air Lines

chadd_scott

Chadd Scott, who does sports updates for 680/The Fan, said he was fired today for negative Tweets about Delta Air Lines, a major sponsor at the station.

In a text message this evening, he said he was informed about Delta’s unhappiness when he was dismissed by the Fan.

The Fan president David Dickey confirmed that Scott has been let go but declined to say why.  “He’s a good guy and we wish him well,” he said. I’ve also checked with Delta Air Lines and am awaiting a response. (As of 7:19 p.m. Tuesday, I had not heard back from Delta.)

Scott, who has worked at 790/The Zone, Colin Cowherd and Michael Savage in the past, complained about a Delta delay Monday in St. Louis on his Twitter page and the fact they didn’t have enough de-icing fluid. Within a few hours, he was let go from the Fan, where he does sports updates for the station’s afternoon shows and produces the Chuck & Chernoff show. Here’s a sample Tweet from yesterday: “the bean counter who saved delta a few bucks in st. lou hoping he wouldn’t need more de-icing fluid this year screwed a lot of people today”

He apparently deleted this particular tweet after the fact but someone did save it. This is the one that probably got him in trouble because he referenced Buck Belue’s endorsement deal with Delta:

“hey @buckbelue8 ur boys at #delta have botched my travel – & thousands of others – miserably today. may want 2 rethink that endorsement.”

Scott said in a text that the Fan requested he delete that tweet above so as not to threaten Belue’s endorsement or the salesperson’s commission. He complied.

At the time this happened, he had about 800 followers. (As of 7:15 p.m. today, he has 1,085.)

Scott began working at the Fan in October, 2008.

Here are some of Scott’s Tweets today:

I value honesty, openness & your follow-ship. I want 2 inform u I was fired from my radio job Monday for tweets critical of Delta Airlines.

Delta leaned on my station threatening to pull advertising after I tweeted travel difficulties in AM.

While pressure from mutli-billion $ company got me canned, at least I added @deltassist as a Twitter follower. #winning

I don’t blame radio station, huge company threatened to pull advertising $$$. I was easy sacrifice.

To prove I can take as good as I give, I’d like 2 applaud myself 4 being fired on an “off day.” #rare Almost Costanza-ish

The message 4 media: companies r monitoring social media, they have 0 sense of humor & will use power 2 silence critics no matter how small

So if you are a radio station looking for someone w/ 10 yrs network & major market experience, or need some yard work done, I’m available.

Thanks for putting this story out there Rodney. I know Delta has been or maybe still is an advertiser at the AJC and if they’d get Chadd Scott fired, maybe they would try to pressure the AJC too.

Delta needs to apologize to Chadd Scott and ask 680 The Fan to reinstate him. No other result is acceptable.

And the update guy this afternoon dropped the F bomb while trying to say, “Mark Fox.” C&C even replayed it back to him before their show ended.

Wow it sure if funny how stories get twisted. Here is one of @chaddscott original tweets that was deleted. This guy has a history of popping off and making dumb comments. Not his first time. Wonder if he will learn?

It’s pretty sad that Delta would pressure 680 over a few ranting complaints. People rant on Twitter all the time. No offense to Chadd but I don’t think he is big enough to bring Delta down.

I heard The Mitch live today….he DID NOT drop the f-bomb in pronouncing Mark Fox’s name….they edited it to sound that way. I hope they bring Mitchie on fulltime…he has a history with C&C and B&K, is the consummate pro, and having him on fulltime would no doubt add some humor to both shows. Chadd Scott….what a dumb ass.

The funniest thing to me about this whole situation, is he took vacation time to go to St. Louis so he could lift weights. If the dork didn’t waste his vacation on such pointless endeavors, this would of never happened.

Just shows how f’ed up Delta is. I stopped flying them when they deleted 23 yrs worth of miles simply because I didn’t fly for 2 yrs (gee… perhaps because AirTran flys for 1/3 the price??)

Chad has every “right” to say what he did, but when he uses the pulpit of his twitter account (which lets face it, nobody would follow if it weren’t for his radio station gig) to bite the hand that feeds him, he has to accept that free speech can carry consequences. I know I always fly only Delta because Buck Belue tells me how great they are. I came to that decision while eating at the Firkin and Gryphon. I felt safe because my dog was at Man’s Best Friend and my home was being protected by Ackerman security. Thanks advertising. I use these products because my trusty host over at 680 tell me how great they are and I know I can trust them because companies pay them money.

Seriously, who reads Chadd Scott or Buck Belue’s twitter pages? Rather sketchy/big brothery of the idiots at Delta. Shouldn’t they be focused on making new ways to have more late flights than any other airline while nickel and diming people to death?

Shame on Dickey broadcasting and Delta. Ohh…and Chadd is a moron for doing this.

Lost In Translation

March 15th, 2011
6:39 pm

This is the problem with Twitter, Facebook, Email, Texting…..messages get lost in translation. Chad thought he was being humorous, well obviuosly the humor was lost in the 140 chracters he had to post his message. companies are all about emailing to get messages across, when verbal communication should come into play more often. Either way, hiding behind written words to get your point across, as in twitter, is pretty lame. Think chad would have walked up to the girl at the airport who was eating the candy and told her it would have helped with her stomach as he pointed out in his tweet??? I’m going to guess probably not. Getting good information from reporters on twitter is one thing, following guys who just spout off to be shocking is another. How many times do we see people getting pointed out for making foolish remarks on twitter or facebook….A TON! It’s just all about common sense…period!

Chad should be ashamed for getting the reference wrong, getting fired on your day off is a Friday(movie) reference, not seinfeld, booo chad…… But everyone should tweet until delta gets 680 to re-hire the guy!

And screwdelta, I too lost tons of skymiles because I didnt fly for a few years, I never knew they went bad and thought I had them until I tried to fly again, yeah I avoid delta every chance I get and now that we got southwest coming in here we can avoid them even more.

I love that Delta pushing their weight around just keeps the bad publicity in the media. Face it, Delta has long been known for poor customer service by those of us that travel regularly.

I do think Chadd’s tweets were not very well thought but firing the guy seems a bit…premature.

JAS, are you naive enough to think either party you mentioned would ever comment on this matter. The only information we can be left to go with is what Chadd’s latest tweet implied, which going by his previous tweet, probably reeks with honesty.

I fly Delta pretty much weekly, get quick customer service when I call or email them, and as for delays…they HAPPEN. No airline is immune to delays, and when your main hub is at the busiest airport in the world, you’re more likely to have system delays, just b/c of volume.

As far as you people that lost your miles…have you ever heard of READING your user-agreements? I find it difficult to believe that Delta would just willy-nilly take your miles away, without a policy in place to handle the situation. Yes, their old policy sucked…which is why they changed it. Caveat emptor…dummies.

You’re ignorance towards corporate monitoring of social media is astounding considering who your past employer was. I say good for 680/The Fan for being able to cut-loose such an ignorant employee. I hate to see self-induced career changes. I wish Chadd the best of luck finding work in this market. He’s talented, and a nice listen.

As for going back to DaZone, you never know. They’ve been down to Steakie doing updates at times when things were REALLY lean, but now that Lincoln Financial owns things, they might look into his services now that he’s a free agent again.

As for The Mitch – you gotta love him. And, as a bonus, Mike Bell can do his ‘Mitch & his Wife’ bits again, now that he’s got the potential for a permanent gig. “Oh geezzzzzeee, hunneeeeee”…

This is making me laugh. Let’s get real, people. Just about all of us have done what he did! Everybody has tweeted a complaint or put it on Facebook. He has every right to speak his mind.

Yes, it wasn’t the smartest thing to do but what he said was true. They were out of de-icing fluid in a major city that has snow/ice on an almost daily basis in the winter. Dumb move on Delta’s part and a legitimate gripe.

What I find appalling is Delta acting like a big bully. They make themselves look like an immature tween boy who gets his kicks from beating up on everyone. To make this big of a deal out of it makes them appear incredibly petty and thin skinned. If everyone even remotely connected with Delta makes a complaint, are they going to get all of them fired, too? Is this guy’s opinion that important?

Seems like their energy would be better spent on actually doing their jobs right so complaints like this wouldn’t be made in the first place.

“Delta’s bringing the Brown Coats back!” The airline with the worst customer satisfaction in the industry year after year, with horrible on-time arrival stats, provides yet another reason to disdain them. Why would any other station hire a guy who was fired after he “Tags” the name of a sponsor in a negative social media post (the tag that drives the message to the advertisers account)? Absolute stupidity – biting the hand that feeds you.

As for SWA being some sort of “answer” in ATL – sounds like you guys haven’t flown them. We have AirTran, and they are about to gut them. No more business class and hot new destinations like Tulsa and Kansas City (after stops in Baltimore and Oklahoma City)? Can’t wait for that!

I’ll save my money and fly coach on an efficient airline that doesn’t charge for baggage and actually gets me where I’m going ontime. And I guess San Diego, Phoenix, San Francisco, Vegas, and Dallas are all boring destinations currently serviced by SWA.

Scott routinely mispronounced words (ex: Falcons CB Dun-tuh Robinson) and put the emphasis at wrong points in every sentence (ex: This IS At-Lan-Ta’s SPORTS station…680 THEE fan). He came off like a robot that was programmed poorly. I have met him, and he is not a pleasant person. I couldn’t be happier about his firing. It will make C&C and B&K all the more enjoyable. Good. The guy is arrogent and runs his mouth to much. I think that 680 must have agreed when they hired him to let him read the same boring news update every 15 minutes just so he could get some air time. Got to the point where I would flip to another station every 15 minutes just so I wouldn’t have to listen to his voice. Thanks Delta!!!!!!!!

I for one applaud his comments and I will fly Delta less and listen to 680 less because of this. I have experienced issues flying Delta over the last year. Lots of delays due to things that are within their control. And the ones that have been out of their control could have been handled better. Running an airline successfully should be THAT difficult. People, seats, flights, occasional weather issues. Nothing should EVER happen that hasnt already been accounted for. Dont give people a ticket, then tell them they cant issue a seat assignment because that seat is still closed and wont open for a half hour. Use logic and common sense. And be prepared for the small amount of variables you may encounter (like ice). I have not been impressed with Delta lately. I have not been impressed with 680 either (except I do enjoy Chuck and Chernoff- honestly their other shows either grind me to not listen or bore me to sleep). Its tough to blast one of your own sponsors, and it probably wasnt worth it at the end of the day, but I know I have been put in situations with airlines where I wish I had a forum to reach a few thousand people and tell them EXACTLY how bad Delta screwed up over something they should have been in control of. I applaud Scott for doing just that. Sadly, he lost his job. But I hope a few people out there are like me and give Delta just a little less business because of this…and listen to 680 just a little less. If they want to hurt the pockets of the people who speak the truth, then I hope they get hurt right back…if only a little. If you want to have a little more of an impact, call those who advertise on 680 and tell them you were thinking of going to give them your business, but are choosing to go to a competitor because of 680’s poor choices in firing people for speaking the truth. Its worth it to me to stand up for someone who speaks the truth against people who think they have so much power. Hey Delta guy who blew the whistle, how about you spend MORE time trying to actually fix your problems with your airline, and less time trying to come down on the little people who speak out when you screw up and you shouldnt have.
Rant over.

I’m not convinced the Delta tweet was the only reason. That’s only his side of the story. Maybe some listeners weren’t the only people under whose skin he got. Many major companies monitor Tweets and Facebook posts. Entire departments dedicated to monitoring social media. That’s how they stop bad service from going viral, er, I mean, that’s how they provide a better level of service.

This is part of what is being social is all about. If companies don’t here from consumers than how do there know what is really going on transparency is the key. If I’m Scott I would ask to see companies guidelines and code of conduct for utilizing social media. Gilbert Godfrey’s firing was the right move this however is not. Delta is not company that is transparent with there customers like Southwest and JetBlue. It more of Delta problem and maybe will lead to there fall as Southwest comes to Hartsfield Jackson.

The funny part of the story is the fact that airlines don’t handle their own de-icing. I think Delta Airlines had a right to express concern over any possible negative pub through social media, but, seriously, how many other people who were on the same flight as Chadd felt the same way. Delta had a right to relay their concern (and agitation) over the posting to the appropriate personnel at 680 due to their advertising relationship. However, the better option would be to account for the delay due to supposed lack of de-icing fluid and respond to Chadd’s Twitter posting with a reasonable and plausible explanation. 680 management could then offer Chadd an opportunity to explain and publicly apologize to Delta via Twitter and on-the-air once Delta made it clear what had occurred. Everything is wrapped up neatly and Delta doesn’t suffer any additional negative fallout from apparently overreacting to a minor social media issue that probably occurs everyday for Delta.

RoswellJacket

Stone Age, not sure if you’re under the age of 35 or not, but e-mail and text messages are easily in the public domain once one of your friends or associates decides to take it viral by forwarding to others without your consent or knowledge. E-mails or text messages require a 3rd party to introduce your message to the public domain. The sender can always scrutinize the persons to whom the message is sent and decide whether or not they trust them with the content.

Not so with the social media sites. It’s up for public consumption the moment it’s posted.

Chadd only said what (probably millions of) others have felt, that is, that Delta ruins people’s trips by being late very frequently!!! This is a form of censorship that is where the socialist left is trying to take us!

If you listened to the beginning of Monday’s show, after Matt said “Chadd is not here”, Chuck yelled “Chadd Scott is gone!” (or something to that effect.) At the time, I thought they were stealthily announcing that Chadd was let go. I am sure DD had conversations with C&C before he fired Chadd. Employers care just as much about what anyone outside of the company says, as it does it’s own employees (case in point). Hey “Get Real”- “Deltas track record speaks for itself.”

Yes, it does. They were recently rated worst major airline for getting people to their destination on time when the reason for the delay was within Delta’s control. The article was on the front page of ajc.com just a few weeks ago.

For whatever reason, they do suck now. Maybe they should spend less money monitoring tweets and more money fixing their problem.

I know double D David Dicky personaly he is one of the coolest people I have ever met and I have met everyone. We do have something in common I got fired on my day off for fighting the bright side of it was I won. You will get another job some where your good at what you do you just learned something you can’t say about a company that pays your bills. Delta was wrong for going after you I guess they were your fans who listen to your show.

If you do-expect to be held accountable and move on. It sounds like Chadd knows the score-he dosen’t blame the radio station and is moving on-good luck Chadd.

Talk about a business that shoits itself in the foot at every turn, Delta, what an embarassment you are! As for 680 the Fan, it’s call freedom of speach, I hope Chad Scott sues your ass for wrongful termination, and i know a few guys that will be calling him in the next few days to jump on that. For shame to you both!!! No BALL!!

Further….. Delta does a crummy job. I was raised in ATL and remember when it was a great airline. It has done nothing but suck for years now. Very high prices, bad service, every flight is late. When you can fly from here to point B for $600 (for example), or drive to Birmingham or Greenville and go to the same point B (thru ATL) for a lot less, you dont have to be Sherlock Holmes to tell that they are raping the Atlanta market. Some great corporate citizens they are. I remember when everyone in ATL swore by Delta. No more, that is for sure.

Obviously a civics lesson is in order …..freedom of speech doesnt pertain to the private sector. this was an offense that justified firing. It may be a bit petty but in principal its legit. Besides, did anyone really enjoy listening to the same updates over and over and over? who was the guy he replaced? I remember him being somewhat colorful and bright.

The Dickeys just LOVE turnover. They shuffle their Atlanta radio deck as often as possible…ensures that none of the on-air talent gets popular (vis-a-vis, powerful) enough to be indisposable. The Dickeys steamrolled Fred Toettcher a few years ago, so he and his crew took their act to Boston and have been very successful. What Chadd tweeted wasn’t libelous or destructive; the easy (and cheap) route was to fire him rather than bring him in and find a resolution.

Delta’s PR people have bigger issues to sweat than an AM sports jock’s unfortunately true comments.

I can understand companies firing employees for some things said on Twitter or Facebook (Gilbert Gottfried and Aflac come to mind). But this sounds like reasonable criticism and frustration. I like Delta and try to always fly them, but this is a bush league move to get someone fired for a fairly innocuous tweet. I have tweeted this article to bring negative publicity on Delta. That is the great thing about the Internet. People can easily speak against this type of behavior. If enough people do it, then positive change can be effected.

Just for the record…Delta purchases de-icing fluid from many of the airports they serve, so Chadd should have been upset at the St.Louis Airport Authority, NOT Delta! And for “Screw Delta”…Southwest will be good for Atlanta as far as competition goes, but they will need pontoons on those 737’s to make it across the “great pond”! But since it sounds like you only make it as far as Panama City Beach, then you keep Southwest!

I won’t miss him. He sounded like he should be doing radio in the smallest market around. He read his sports updates by the word instead of talking like he was having a conversation with the listener. He barely could say his name right. He always said “I’m Chad Scott?” like he didn’t know who he was. He added nothing to that station and what exactly did he do with “The Herd?” Why in the world he would think anyone would be sitting around wondering is Chad Scott getting home okay is beyond me.

In the halls of 790 the story is that Chadd came back from ESPN Radio to Atlanta and did the exact same thing to Kroger! Then he was taken off any hosting duties and relegated to updates. If that is true he swung and missed twice. He was banned from the other sports station from hosting for the exact same behavior. That would be really dumb. Any truth Rodney?

Shame On You Delta!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38w1wInRArA

This video is a result of being jacked around by ticket agents and gate grunts. Everything from confiscating a computer bag that was within size regulation, being charged excessively for checking bags, and even more so for having to change flights, as well as assistance on the phone.
Now they fired Chadd Scott of The Fan in Atlanta for calling them on Twitter on a problem. They threatened to pull all of their advertising because of it. That’s why nobody has run with this video, except for the folks that agree in the media, but don’t want to be martyrs. Chadd was and should be commended for standing up to the Delta slugs. But Delta is still a crap airline.and they gave bonuses to 80,000 employees when they should be fixing their planes.

The Dickeys are basically narcissistic sociopaths. They treat employees like inanimate objects. Sure all businesses have to be aware of the bottom line but what these clowns miss is that if you actually treat good employees very well and with respect they would in turn give you their best effort. they just want to collect radio stations without worrying about quality of programming or treating employees well.
