Chadd Scott, who does sports updates for 680/The Fan, said he was fired today for negative Tweets about Delta Air Lines, a major sponsor at the station.
In a text message this evening, he said he was informed about Delta’s unhappiness when he was dismissed by the Fan.
The Fan president David Dickey confirmed that Scott has been let go but declined to say why. “He’s a good guy and we wish him well,” he said. I’ve also checked with Delta Air Lines and am awaiting a response. (As of 7:19 p.m. Tuesday, I had not heard back from Delta.)
Scott, who has worked at 790/The Zone, Colin Cowherd and Michael Savage in the past, complained about a Delta delay Monday in St. Louis on his Twitter page and the fact they didn’t have enough de-icing fluid. Within a few hours, he was let go from the Fan, where he does sports updates for the station’s afternoon shows and produces the Chuck & Chernoff show. Here’s a sample Tweet from yesterday: “the bean counter who saved delta a few bucks in st. lou hoping he wouldn’t need more de-icing fluid this year screwed a lot of people today”
He apparently deleted this particular tweet after the fact but someone did save it. This is the one that probably got him in trouble because he referenced Buck Belue’s endorsement deal with Delta:
“hey @buckbelue8 ur boys at #delta have botched my travel – & thousands of others – miserably today. may want 2 rethink that endorsement.”
Scott said in a text that the Fan requested he delete that tweet above so as not to threaten Belue’s endorsement or the salesperson’s commission. He complied.
At the time this happened, he had about 800 followers. (As of 7:15 p.m. today, he has 1,085.)
Scott began working at the Fan in October, 2008.
Here are some of Scott’s Tweets today:
I value honesty, openness & your follow-ship. I want 2 inform u I was fired from my radio job Monday for tweets critical of Delta Airlines.
Delta leaned on my station threatening to pull advertising after I tweeted travel difficulties in AM.
While pressure from mutli-billion $ company got me canned, at least I added @deltassist as a Twitter follower. #winning
I don’t blame radio station, huge company threatened to pull advertising $$$. I was easy sacrifice.
To prove I can take as good as I give, I’d like 2 applaud myself 4 being fired on an “off day.” #rare Almost Costanza-ish
The message 4 media: companies r monitoring social media, they have 0 sense of humor & will use power 2 silence critics no matter how small
So if you are a radio station looking for someone w/ 10 yrs network & major market experience, or need some yard work done, I’m available.

Column writer, go back a check this guy’s tweets in regard to other subjects. Low class in every regard. He’s obviously a worm who belongs below ground, not above — not even on Delta!

There is MORE to this story than just the Delta incident.
If you listened to the beginning of Monday’s show, after Matt said “Chadd is not here”, Chuck yelled “Chadd Scott is gone!” (or something to that effect.) At the time, I thought they were stealthily announcing that Chadd was let go. I am sure DD had conversations with C&C before he fired Chadd. They often make snarky comments that they believe are well under the radar of their listeners, quite often in reference to Rodney Ho’s articles.

Radio stations only make money from advertising dollars. If Im paying big bucks to a company to advertise and one of their employees is tweeting followers about his dislike of said company…umm, ya, I would have a problem with that too. He was dumb to make that comment.
Every airline has delays, but Delta’s track record speaks for itself. I wont fly any other airline. Plus their non-stop flights to Europe cant be beat. But Im sure most of you AM radio listeners cant afford that anyways.

AM listeners are the ones that CAN AFFORD it. We are not busy jamming to Bieber or a rap station or country station. Delta is a terrible airline to fly. Southwest is the best by far. And yes, Delta’s record of having to file for bankruptcy speaks for itself

Fact is, Delta is one of the worst airlines in the country and down right laughable overseas. This from someone who has over 120,000 FF miles with Delta. The deal between Airtran and Southwest is one of the best things to ever happen. #Can’twait. Oh, maybe Delta will lean on the AJC and force it to ban my IP. Just laughable.

My employer (multi-billion dollar, HQ’d in Atlanta)has a team of people who do nothing except scour Yahoo message boards, fbook, twitter, linkedin, etc. all day, every day of the week, looking for anything that portrays the company in anything other than a positive light. Employers care just as much about what anyone outside of the company says, as it does it’s own employees (case in point). All the big companies are linked through business and will handle things exactly like this. If you have a decent job and half a brain, you should already realize that big brother is always watching.

This is kind of the proverbial “don’t bite the hand that feeds you.” Advertisers pay huge amounts of money to have ads on the radio. I don’t agree with Chadd being fired however. I think a suspension of some kind would have been enough.

He gave my sons & me a tour of the studio and was really nice to us. It is a shame that Delta would rather get someone fired than admit it made a mistake in St. Louis and handle this quietly with a polite phone call to 680. Just ask him to remove it and forgive & forget. Geez.

It’s amazing what a has-been DAL has turned into and thank God for AirTran Business class (though it’s going away in the merger). I remember when about every 10th adult on the southside of ATL seemed to work for DAL but short of the pilots, mechanic and talking Coke machines the rest have bailed in the last 10 years.
Notice the DAL full court press radio ads every since the SWA/AT merger was announced. It’s pretty sad they even have to remind ATL that they are the biggest carrier in ATL. Their service sucks, their planes are old and decrepit and their talking Coke machines are grandmothers.

Hey “Get Real”- “Deltas track record speaks for itself.”
Yes, it does. They were recently rated worst major airline for getting people to their destination on time when the reason for the delay was within Delta’s control. The article was on the front page of ajc.com just a few weeks ago.
For whatever reason, they do suck now. Maybe they should spend less money monitoring tweets and more money fixing their problem.

I know double D David Dicky personaly he is one of the coolest people I have ever met and I have met everyone. We do have something in common I got fired on my day off for fighting the bright side of it was I won. You will get another job some where your good at what you do you just learned something you can’t say about a company that pays your bills. Delta was wrong for going after you I guess they were your fans who listen to your show.

Talk about a business that shoits itself in the foot at every turn, Delta, what an embarassment you are! As for 680 the Fan, it’s call freedom of speach, I hope Chad Scott sues your ass for wrongful termination, and i know a few guys that will be calling him in the next few days to jump on that. For shame to you both!!! No BALL!!

Further….. Delta does a crummy job. I was raised in ATL and remember when it was a great airline. It has done nothing but suck for years now. Very high prices, bad service, every flight is late. When you can fly from here to point B for $600 (for example), or drive to Birmingham or Greenville and go to the same point B (thru ATL) for a lot less, you dont have to be Sherlock Holmes to tell that they are raping the Atlanta market. Some great corporate citizens they are. I remember when everyone in ATL swore by Delta. No more, that is for sure.

Obviously a civics lesson is in order …..freedom of speech doesnt pertain to the private sector. this was an offense that justified firing. It may be a bit petty but in principal its legit. Besides, did anyone really enjoy listening to the same updates over and over and over? who was the guy he replaced? I remember him being somewhat colorful and bright.

The Dickeys just LOVE turnover. They shuffle their Atlanta radio deck as often as possible…ensures that none of the on-air talent gets popular (vis-a-vis, powerful) enough to be indisposable. The Dickeys steamrolled Fred Toettcher a few years ago, so he and his crew took their act to Boston and have been very successful. What Chadd tweeted wasn’t libelous or destructive; the easy (and cheap) route was to fire him rather than bring him in and find a resolution.
Delta’s PR people have bigger issues to sweat than an AM sports jock’s unfortunately true comments.

Guess Buck & Ol Kincaid will never ever be allowed to criticize the Thrashers or the Hawks again…seeing as where they have to run those non-stop 90 second commercials about being the voice of ice hockey and basketball.
Nothing like turning to a sports talk radio station in the south in the midst of football news and NFL labor disputes and hearing…..uh…non-stop schmoozing with the brass of an ice hockey team. Yeah boy.
