Melissa Carter is leaving Q100’s Bert Show April 15 after nearly 10 years.

Carter, who joined sister station 99X 15 years ago, started doing news when the Bert Show launched in early 2001, but quickly became a full-fledged member of the team. She said she chose to leave with no safety net, no defined plan for the future.

“I’m taking a risk and I’ve never done that in my life,” Carter said on the air this morning.

Jenn Hobby began crying. “I think it sucks,” she said.  She then said she was proud of Carter to “see what life could bring. Selfishly, I’m really upset.”

“We are family here,” Carter said. “It’s a tough decision.”

She plans to take a few months off but has no clue what the future will bring. “It’s this instinctual feeling to move on and try something else. That is it. I’m not hiding anything. I’m not playing games with anybody,” she said. “It’s just time.”

Carter, always known as the voice of reason on the team, was the first openly gay morning host in Atlanta radio. She also lived through a kidney transplant while with the show in 2002 and is now 100 percent healthy.

“I’m being stoic until the 15th,” she said afterwards in studio to the other Bert Show members. She hugged everybody but kept the tears in check.

This is the first significant departure on the show since 2002, when Lindsay Brien left, replaced by Hobby.

Bert Weiss said there were no negotiations when her contract came up. She simply told them that her heart wasn’t in it anymore and it was time to move on.

Chris “Crash” Clark, who worked with Carter for many years at 99X, took a break from doing traffic on Dave FM to call in and sing “Don’t Know What You Got Til It’s Gone.”

“I wish you the best,” he said. “The whole radio community is going to miss you.”

Then he joked, “Can I have your spot on Bert’s Big Adventure.”

Carter finally started crying when a caller, a closeted lesbian, has decided to come out at work today, inspired by her.

“Bert gave me a hard time wearing black today,” Carter joked during a break.

Thinking more seriously, she said: “I try to live my life as aggressively and honestly as possible. To think about it is overwhelming.”

Most radio personalities have to be shoved out the door. What Carter is doing, leaving on her own terms, is rare indeed.

As for the Bert Show itself, will they fill her seat? Eventually. Bert, after the show, said it’s been a draining week and the team will take Friday off.  He said he will seek a replacement for Carter but will take his time doing so. “The show is strong enough with the players on it” to soldier on for now, he said. “Chemistry is so important.”

I hope Cumulus will hire someone from a major market who will have ideas so Q100 doesn’t have to repeat so many segments. TBS may be on the air for 4.5 hours, but the second half of the show is only repeats of the first half, even the bits that weren’t that good in the first place. When Jeff left early on Friday, Jenn just played each of the 24 American Idol singers’ voices…for 20 minutes! “This is so you can get to know the AI people.” Really? You couldn’t think of ANYTHING else to do?

Wendy used to just (try to) read traffic. Now, she’s in-studio the entire time. They still want to position her as a “financially strapped 20-something,” so they will not announce that she is a full-time cast member with a substantial paycheck. If only she would read a dictionary, not call grown men “boys,” etc.

Melissa can get annoying with all her talk about Katie Joe and whatnot but I think she’ll be missed as she’s such a fixture and indeed a voice of reason sometimes. Meredith

I listened to the Bert Show for nearly ten years, every morning on my way into work. Last year I began to realize that more often than not I was rolling my eyes at them. Bert is so arrogant and full of himself that he has become intolerable, Jeff I would put in the same boat and he lost my vote when we were supposed to feel sorry for him when he was negotiating his salary a few years back. Jenn was ok for a while but after her marriage crumbled and then she became this “voice for the divorced ladies” for all of five seconds and then she jumped back into marrying some guy she’s known less than a year because she’s too scared to be alone, she really lost all credibility. Wendy and Joanna are whiny and annoying and Wendy is especially horrible–slutty and bad at her job but the Bert Show has said repeatedly they don’t care what listeners think, they are leaving her on.

So I gave up on the Bert Show and as of Jan 1 of this year I haven’t listened. And I discovered that the only one out of the show that I even remotely missed, that even remotely resembled a human being was Melissa.

All my best wishes to you Melissa. I know there are greener pastures for you.

I believe there were “no negotiations” because Cumulus wasn’t renewing her contract. Melissa has talked about how very expensive invitro is and wondered if they could afford it. SO, why quit your high-paying job? With absolutely no idea of what you’ll do? Not buying it. At all. Agreement was for everyone to say (repeatedly) that this was all Melissa’s decision. It cracks me up to read some of these comments and then I always hear that phrase in my head: “Atlanta–the city too busy to hate”. Unless you’re gay, apparently.

I quit listening to terrestrial radio years ago, so my recollections of Melissa are mainly from 99X. Good luck to her–it takes a lot of guts to just up and say, “Well, time to try something else.” She may be back after a while, or she may go on to the next thing and be happy. As an avid TBS listener, I will say that Melissa will be missed. While I do not always agree with everything each of the cast members say, I do feel that each of them contributes something worthwhile. The worst thing Cumulus could do is fill the slot with someone else immediately. I definitely agree that Wendy needs no further air time. I too tire of her voice. She’s superfluous to the show altogether. At least Melissa added something a bit more concrete!

Instead of listing to TBS, switch over to 95.5…you might actually learn something of value to your lives, like how Obama leading our country right down the drain into a socialist abyss, full of massive spending, unwillingness to cut anything that would make a dent into our 3 trillion debt, entitlements for baby making machines who cannot afford to raise their own offspring, entitlements for all illegals, healthcare rammed down our throats by hiding funds in a 1,200 page bill that was released 1 hour before a vote on it was scheduled, failure to secure our southern border, etc. Oh, he did do one thing right…a 180 on keeping Gitmo open, so I’ll give him props for that. And Wendy is horrible…

The Bert show is Jerry Springer on the air. The morons calling in with two boyfriends, or someone sleeping with someone, or they guy never called me back after a date, these are the topics of the show. Heck, Katie Joe should have changed her name. These people are annoying and condescending especially Melissa. Who cares if she is gay if you are going to be on talk radio at least make it interesting. Who’s next..Jenn Hobby or producer Tracy another annoying voice? I happened to tune in when they started putting these interns on the radio it started going to the crapper especially with Kyle…geeezzzz..where did they find that one.? Did it ever occur to anyone that TBS is meant to be listened to on the drive into work, and since not everyone drives to work at the same hour, they intentionally repeat segments? I drive into work at 6:15, but if I drove in at 8:15 I’d still enjoy hearing the bits they put on. I don’t think this is really all that unique of a situation.

And who cares if Melissa mentioned Katie Jo? Wendy mentions Billy Elliott and Bert mentions Stacy, so who cares? They talk about their lives. And?

controversy

March 9th, 2011
10:32 am

Melissa only mentions her homosexuality when it is relevant to the point she’s about to make/the story. Secondly, in a major metro market, there should be enough talent to have all-new bits for a 4-hour period. Shouldn’t be only for “the drive into work, so let’s repeat stories 3x in one morning since most people aren’t in their cars the whole time.” And it’s Tracey who does the laser hair removal ads.

I am sad to hear that Melissa is leaving but relieved that this is a positive choice for her. I know the show will survive but it won’t be the same, and I hope she comes back every once in a while. The show isn’t perfect, but it’s a pleasure to have listened to and gotten to know each of these people over the three years that I have listened. She often has trouble reading and is so shallow that she lowers the quality of the show. With Melissa leaving I’m afraid they may turn to her. Wendy needs to go.

@BehindEnemyLines: That is a surprise. “Southland” averages around 2 million viewers. Leverage? Around 3 million. White Collar averages about 4 million viewers. Rizzoli & Isles and the Closer? 7 million-plus viewers. One thing TNT is touting: DVR+7 numbers. “Southland” is popular on DVR–> it averages close to 3 million viewers counting those.

I am proud of Melissa Carter for being “out” on radio. She is obviously one of the toughest people out there having to go thru a kidney transplant and come out the other side. Good for her for moving on when it is time, not just when it is safe to do so. Best of luck. You will be the most missed on the show.

People use the space to vent their anger & frustration on people they don’t even know. Trashing people online is one of the most cowardly things in the 21st century.

I’m really surprised that TBS doesn’t at least have some professional urging them to stop with the “like” and “you know.” Not to mention the upspeak. I am very concerned that they will turn to Wendy, and frankly, I believe she offers nothing. I have called TBS before and they say to email about complaints. Melissa is a great on air personality. As a straight conservative there are more than a few issues I disagree with her on. However her handling of her own sexuality and politics on air has been very professional and insightful. There are also many areas where I agree with her on nurturing relationships and raising children. Without her professional and considerate discussions of sensitive issues I would missed out on her wisdom.

Sorry to hear about Jeff’s divorce. I listen to the show everyday, and don’t know how I missed that announcement.

First off Melissa you will be missed, and you are a great asset to the Bert Show.

I really amazes me how people like to talk smack about The Bert Show. Everyone of you have made negative comments saying that you don’t listen, but you gave so much information in your comments that proves that you do listen. You know way to much about there life history. Only a long time real listener would know that information.

You say that you don’t like when Melissa mentions Katie Joe, really! Why did you have to bring up the name if you couldn’t stand her talking about her. Be for real, you liked when she did so you could something to talk about around the water hole. Who doesn’t talk about there partner. If you didn’t that means you really don’t care about them.

You say you don’t like Jenn Hobby, but why? You say that she is “snobby”. How do you know? Jen is a very intelligent woman for her age. Her vocabulary is out of this world. She has so much to offer The Bert Show.

Jeff: Not to many comment on Jeff only comments about divorce. How would a non listner know this kind of information?

Bert everything positive.

Wendy: Why so much hate for her voice? Have you ever stopped to listen to your own? Noone’s voice is perfect. She is a 21 year old lady that is actually doing good for herself. She is holding a steady job with o.k. income and long hours. Who doesn’t stumble over there own words at some point in time or laugh funny. At least she is a happy individual with a lot to bring to the Bert Show.

I know someone will have something to say about the post, but you know I really don’t care. If you really sit back and think about what you say before you say it you might rethink it.

Bye, Melissa. Thanks for providing one of the two voices of reason and fairness for all ( Bert being the other, except when it comes to animals). I hope you find something great that offers new experiences for you.
Now, please can we listen to someone else read the traffic besides Wendy? I hate to bash anyone, but her cutesy over-enunciating is anything but cute. There is no accent that warrants saying “hiieeeway niieeenty-two” and “IEEE – Seventy-fiieeeve”?

amanda

Karen, I agree so much. It’s such a fabricated little girl voice, and rarely do you hear her get through a traffic report without giggling or stumbling over words. I LOVED it when Natalie read traffic during BBA; she has a melodic voice and did not overenunciate or say “weather FOR today” over and over. Sometimes I just don’t get that channel changed fast enough. She’s a Jenn clone and is banking on taking over for Jenn when Hollywood calls for good.

Thanks, Clyde. I can’t believe how it’s not being mentioned. It is so very obvious that Cumulus had no desire to renew her contract. To be more believable, she should’ve at least made up something that she was planning on doing. Cumulus doesn’t want Melissa fans to be angry, so the agreement was to say Melissa isn’t passionate anymore and has decided to wander about instead. And pay for invitro and a family. Right.

I’ll agree with others … jenn and wendy do get on my nerves, so when jeff and bert are out melissa just isn’t enough to dilute those two. But, as someone else said, to each his own, some might like them, I just really hope they don’t replace Melissa with wendy.

Good luck Melissa, I hope that you will do great in your life.

FYI – for all of those who think Wendy isn’t annoying on air – she is absolutely horrible off-air. Arrogant, ugly (I mean it – her face looks like a pizza), and absolutely intolerable. I’ll give you some inside info, as someone who worked for Cumulus for a bit – if a young, and clearly talentless intern becomes a regular fix on a show out of nowhere, it’s because she slept with one of the Dickie brothers. Who, you know, own the station. And how do you think Wendy got her little slot on the show? No one there likes her because they ALL know how she “got” her job. :) Melissa probably got fed up with it too. The more you know!…

To all the haters: Why waste your time & energy to bash the show/members of the show?!?!? Get a life! It’s easy to hide behind a computer & say such rude, hateful, & hurtful things. We all know that you would never have the balls to say any of these things to their face, heck or even over the phone! If you don’t listen to the show, how do you know so much about it? If you don’t listen to the show & are not a fan…why do you care? Why are you reading this story? Why take time out of your miserable life to put someone down? I love the show. I look forward to it every morning. What they have is really special. I hope they continue to be successful & that they are around for many years to come. I think some parts of the show may need some revamping & new segments, but overall it is by far the best radio show & team in the South. Just about every other station in Atlanta is jealous of their success & are constantly trying to create their own version of TBS (not gonna happen-too fake & boring). Good luck Melissa & I hope you remain a friend of the show & that this isn’t the last time we hear from you on the show. Before I started listening to The Bert Show, I despised any kind of talk radio/morning show. I wanted to turn on the radio to hear music, not conversation, commercials, etc. That all changed when I found TBS. I actually look forward to my morning commute, they make it more than bearable but enjoyable. The cast has me laughing & crying with them every morning. I love how they aren’t afraid to talk anything. Some of the segments hit so close to home & I completely understand what the caller is going through. It makes you feel better that you aren’t the only one who has problems or are going through something. Its great to hear the advice of the cast & fellow listeners that call in. You can count on receiving honest advice. The chemistry of TBS cast is like nothing I’ve seen in radio before. You can tell that they all really like one another, although they are so different & they do disagree. I think each member of the show is so important to making the show what it is. Melissa will be missed so much by the Bert Show community. I just hope the show will be able to find someone who balances the show out as well as she does. They need someone that is willing to be honest while respecting others opinions. I hope this doesn’t hurt the show in the long run. To the true fans of the show, every member of the cast feels like a close friend. It’s an escape that we all look forward to every morning. Only a true fan can really understand this.

Laura, two things. First, please learn how to use the word “their”. “You know way to much about there life history”. Seriously? Second, not everyone lives paycheck to paycheck. Some of us are educated and smart with our money.

carry on.

I got so tired of the long commercial breaks that I actually timed one … NINE MINUTES. Between the breaks and just repeating bigs, they make a lot of money for doing very little. I’d get up at 3:45 a.m. for that gig.

Funguy70 – she slept around with everyone she could to secure her job. Period. And the funny thing is, she’s so intimidated by other women that she doesn’t speak to them. It has a lot to do with why so many people dislike her not just at Cumulus, but listeners as well. You can tell she’s absolutely not genuine. Everyone who works on the same floor jokes around about it because it’s so blatantly obvious – she is an inhumanly slutty girl and will spread it for anyone. And when you sleep with a Dickey brother, you ain’t goin’ nowhere. :) Not even Bert can get rid of you!

On Q100 not negotiating a contract, I bet Melissa got a bonus if she didn’t admit that. Q100 doesn’t want to alienate the gay community. But Melissa said she won’t state definite plans because she wants people to know Q100 didn’t renew. I think she has morals and ethics.

Melissa will be missed. It’s a shame but I wish the best for her. Also, all the people on here who seem to hate Wendy like she is the spawn of Hitler really need to get lives. It’s pretty easy to not listen to the show if she bothers you that much. I like her so I will keep tuning in.

I agree with xtra. I don’t know anyone who walks away from a six figure salary/benefits, who must have health insurance, with no future plans at the age of 41. Not to mention 15 years in radio, what else can she do? I’m not saying she’s not capable just limited in experience. Good luck to you Melissa.

I have listened to The Bert Show for 10 years. Will miss Melissa. At least she has integrity. Jeff makes me laugh. Bert is a good moderator. Wendy adds nothing. Over Jenn Hobby. Too bad it wasn’t her leaving instead. But then again Hobby won’t make it national or on TV – doesn’t have the talent. So, guess I’ll have to get satellite radio or switch stations.

Now if they would just get rid of the rest of the cast, it will be all good. Jeff is just fat and obnoxious. He isn’t funny at all. Most of the stuff that comes out of his mouth is usually stupid, Melissa made a good move. She knows the show sucks.

For those of you who believe Wendy offers nothing to the show: I suggest you email each cast member. I just CCd all of them the same email. I was told by 2 of the members that they take anything on the blogs with a grain of salt. If change is to be made, they must recieve emails from people, as they do not put any weight on criticism conveyed through a comment section like we have here today.

jesus the 6 am hour must be the repeat hour. 30 min of melissa making her announcement. Then Jenn Hobby pretending to give real advice via IM chat..what a boring segment. Come on Burt. Grow some balls and start doing real bits instead of repeats the first two hours of the show. I mean why not just wait until 7 am to come into the station if your gonna do repeats from 530-7am..Plus lose the jenn hobby bit on her sending ims to people cause thats just f’n boring to listen too

The show plays to the lowest common denominator. And the radio business is one where you have to do to shameless promotions to survive. No matter what happened with Melissa’s contract, she was the most well-spoken and intelligent one on the show. The rest of them suffer from deep insecurities that correlate directly to their inflated egos. I hope she goes on to something bigger and better.

Ironically, the two people you’d think would be the most douchey off-air are the nicest: Bert and Melissa are down to earth, always friendly, and not arrogant at all. It’s Wendy and Jenn that are the rude ones who actually think they’re significant.

Wow, I have not listened to them since 2 years and everything is news to me. Jeff and Jen are divorced and Melissa is leaving…. I wonder what major life changes did Bert go through? I had quit listening due to the snobbish attitude of Bert and frankly the show got to dull and annoying. But I did like Melissa. Best wishes to you.

I agree with Annie. They have attitudes that they think they are better than everyone and know everything.
Bert is whipped and needs to grow a pair. Wendy has to be the worst air personality in Atl yet they keep her on and talking. Go away Jenn and Wendy. The show was better last week with Bert gone for some reason

When is Q and AJC going to get rid of Jeff Dauler’s soon to be ex wife. She is horrible and has no business being employed. Also, it still annoys me that people think Jenn is a good person. Everytime I hear a Sister Hazel song, I am reminded how she did that guy wrong. Shame!

Who cares? My god, who LISTENS to Atlanta FM radio anymore? Let’s see — nobody plays music… the “new” music that’s out there these days is pretty much crap… and how interested can people possibly be to listen to these uber-trendy people at Q-100 babble on about their average lives???

The only reason to listen to FM radio is to get traffic and weather updates and some news — that’s it. The “witty banter” and “new rock” gets old. And, to be perfectly blunt, a lot of people like Melissa kind of offend the moral sense of some people, so they really don’t care to hear her talk about her life every freakin’ day.

Q-100 had some decent moments when it first came out, but just like the majority of Atlanta FM radio, things at EVERY station got stale and boring by the mid-2000s, and EVERY attempt by so-called program directors to fix them has not worked at all.

With satellite radio and Ipods now available to consumers, the need to be glued to an FM radio station during a morning or afternoon commute is unnecessary and worthless. The only good that FM radio can provide is background music in an office or doing some live remote broadcast at some event.

I’m a big fan of radio… I’ve even worked some in the industry… but aside from a SMALL core of dedicated listeners, most Atlanta people I know don’t give a crap about the FM dial, nor do they listen for more than 2 minutes at a time. Bad management by mega-companies like Cumulus and Clear Channel, coupled with failed format changes and increased competition, have pretty much killed every station in one way or another. When I was a kid, Z-93 had a HUGE audience… 94-Q was separate and had a HUGE audience… 96 Rock appealed to a different group and STILL had a HUGE audience… Kicks 101.5 had the country audience… etc. etc. etc. Now, you can’t tell one station from another, and like I said — with Ipods and smartphones and satellite radio, FM stations are really hurting.

As a consumer, I either listen to my Sirius radio or some of the AM stations — 680 for sports and 750 for news. That’s about it. I haven’t had an Atlanta FM station on my radio at night or during the morning rush in almost 10 years. And it’s sad, because I have a lot of great 80s radio memories. But unless some smart person comes along who is IN TUNE with the public and can radically shake things up at a station, Atlanta FM radio will continue to be stale, boring, sophomoric, offensive to many, trite and quite silly.

Somebody please just come along, play some classic rock hits of the 70s and 80s, mix in a few lost tracks and deep tracks that are fan favorites, and have a decent news, traffic and weather team, and you’ll be fine. No more silly schtick, no more cackling laughter, no more fart jokes, no 14-year-old boy humor, no metrosexual programs with a lesbian vibe — just play some U2 or Bob Segar or Jackson Browne or R.E.M. or Cheap Trick or Styx or Bruce Springsteen, tell me if it’s gonna rain, tell me if the interstates are clear, and what happened in the news overnight… that’s all I need.

I listened to the show when the announcement was made, and while I fully support anyone’s right to do as they please, I also support the listener’s right to react.

To be blunt, I was disgusted at the notion that what she is doing is “courageous.” Leaving without having another opportunity is a luxury that few can afford. I support anyone “moving on” and “making a change” if one’s current path is not desired, but most can not do this.

The factory worker hates his job, hates his boss, has no advancement and would very much like to take a few months off to “find him or herself” before moving on to another job. However, he or she has kids to support, and can’t quit without another opportunity lined up.

The office worker performs boring, repetitive, mind numbing work. How many times would these workers love to walk out the door? They can’t. They have obligations.

It takes no courage to leave. It takes courage to STAY.
