Gurvir Dhindsa returns to ‘Good Day Atlanta’ as host
Gurvir Dhindsa returns as co-host of “Good Day Atlanta,” a job she last held from 1997 to 2000.
She replaces Suchita Vadlamani, who left in December after eight years with no explanation. Dhindsa will start again at “Good Day Atlanta” March 28 and be at the anchor desk with Mark Hayes from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. weekdays. (Newsblues.com, a subscription-based broadcast news site, broke the news.)
“Coming back to Atlanta has crossed my mind many times over the years,” Dhindsa said from Washington D.C., where she is a morning anchor at the Fox affiliate. “I’ve often said ‘Good Day Atlanta’ was the best job I ever had.”
She said she left in 2000 because she felt it was important to be an evening anchorperson in a major market. She got that opportunity at the CBS affiliate in D.C. A talent consultant warned her at the time that it’s not all that it’s cracked up to be. But Dhindsa said she felt like she had to do it. In the end, the talent consultant was right: “I made really good money but that was about it.”
She spent four years at WUSA-TV until the affiliate had a “housecleaning” and her contract was not renewed. She landed at the D.C. Fox affiliate at WTTG-TV in mornings, where she has spent the past seven years. It was a pay cut, but she preferred the challenges of doing mornings, where she’s talking about Libya and political wranglings early on, then juggling cooking segments and celebrity interviews an hour later.
“I am a morning person,” she said. She said she figured she’d live out the rest of career in D.C. but then she had twins in 2008. With family in Tennessee, the tug of the South beckoned.
When she heard about the WAGA-TV opening, she approached her boss at WTTG-TV in D.C. and told him her intentions. Though she was still under contract there, her boss was understanding.
Given her popularity in Atlanta during her time here, it was an easy decision for both WAGA-TV management and Dhindsa. And her husband, Tom Sater, a meteorologist who is currently freelancing, may have more opportunities in Atlanta, especially since the Weather Channel is based here.
“I’m really excited about it,” she said. “I’m really looking forward to it. I can’t wait!”
In a way, she added, “it’s like putting on my favorite pair of boots that have been re-soled!”
Angeline Hartmann, who worked mornings at WAGA while Dhindsa was there and now produces and reports for “America’s Most Wanted” in D.C., said Dhindsa has a Katie Couric quality about her. “She always had a girl-next-door feel,” Hartmann said. “Women weren’t threatened by her. She could be their best friend. She loved being in Atlanta. That came across on the television. People could sense that.”

Well maybe I will start watching again, because I just can’t stomach Karen Graham after what she said about the Virginia Humane Society director when her dog died accidentally. The dog (which was 14 years old and a rescue dog) was put in the director’s car by her husband to take to work. He neglected to tell her and the dog was in the car most of the day in the summer heat. It died. The Humane Society Director was devastated. Karen Graham, when talking about the story with Mark Hayes one morning commented, “Yea, and she was the one throwing daggers at Michael Vick, and now look what she’s done to her dog”. Mark Hayes didn’t bother to point out that what Vick did was intentional and what happened to her dog was an accident. Jeff Hill also kept his mouth shut but Cheryl (traffic) pointed out that this was accidental. I just can’t even look at Karen Graham without thinking of her insensitive, idiotic, Michael Vick loving comment. I haven’t watched the morning show since she replaced Suchita. Good riddance Karen!

I’ll always remember the incident with Gurvir and Paul Osman when he mentioned Chia Pes and she had never heard of it. He brought in a couple of the m and she had a good laugh.

Suchita said something big was in the works but probably had a clause in her contract that prohibits her from being seen or interviewed in the Atl for 6-12 mos. I love Cheryl because she is a real woman and is not a skinny young stupid chick like all on CbsAtlanta. But Stacy irritates me soooooo in either role. I just wish Karen would do the sports and shut up about all else. I like the dynamic between Cheryl, Mark and Jeff. Mark is crazy and Jeff is dry but funny too. Cheryl is real. I hope Gurvir is cool. I’m glad Gurvir is coming back. I’ve been a GDA viewer for a long time and I remember her being good on the show when she was on. I agree with others that I have not been able to watch the show since Suchita left. I liked Karen Graham better as a sports reporter; I’m happy for her that she got to advance, but I don’t think she has the presence to carry a show yet. Besides, that show is on so long that they need a rotating cast, so there’s still room to add Gurvir to the mix and keep Karen.
But, I still miss Suchita. Gurvir is a pretty lady in a non-threatening way (which I guess makes her more appealing to women), but Suchita is a rare beauty.

I leased an apartment to Gurvir when she first came to Atlanta to do “Good Day Atlanta” and I will tell you she is a very sweet and sincere person. I started watching the show during that period and stopped after she left. I am so glad she is back. Welcome back to Atlanta.

Clearly I’m in the minority but I thought Suchita had no personality or enthusiasm. Yes, she’s attractive but it takes more than that to be a good newswoman. She’s coasting by on her looks IMO. I think GDA was best when Paul Ossman and the black lady were on…can’t remember her name, she was there right before Gurvir got there. Now, they had chemistry. I wasn’t crazy about Gurvir and I don’t like Mark at all. I stopped watching when Suchita got there. Fox 5 is not good at recognizing and using their reporters’ strengths. There was a brief period where they had Dana Fowle anchoring the weekend news. You could tell she was uncomfortable and out of her element. I don’t know why she was put in that position but I felt bad for her.

This is great. This gal really was cheery and comes across much more down-to-earth than Suchita (I’ve met her off-set). I remember her well in Atlanta until, boom, suddenly one day she was gone. A couple of years ago flipping channels in a D.C. area hotel one morning I caught her, and–there she was. Her and Mark (whom I’ve also met off-set and is a very down-to-earth, cheery guy) will be great again. And I do think someone with pull at Atlanta’s station must clearly like hot Indian gals. Mark isn’t that bad. It’s really about the chemistry on that show. Suchita, Mark, Jeff, and Cheryl were a great group to watch. Furthermore, Jeff is a clown; he has his funny moment’s just look at that smirk tomorrow morning. Karen was the sports anchor for a while so you can tell she was a Vick fan. Talk about Karen, don’t go there! However, Stacy said something that was a little thoughtless one episode about the Super Bowl. She said something to the fact of painting a live parrot the Packers colors. Mark, turn around and said “Nooo, you can’t do that.” I thought that was so funny and thoughtless. But lets face it, can you get up that early and entertain millions everyday? It’s a tough job. I think they are a great crew, but the magic crew needs to stand up. The morning shows around here is “blah!”

I loved the morning show when Guvir was there. I didn’t think it could get better until they brought in Sucita got there. The chemistry got even better. I would much rather have Sucita, but Guvir is a good replacement. That Stacy girl is HORRIBLE!!!!…even as a road warrior. I keep thinking to myself, please make this stop when her segments are on. I can’t flip the channel fast enough. Now that Brett guy was GREAT. Funny as you know what. Bring him back. I love Mark, Jeff and Cheryl. I am happy to see people of all sizes on the television. They seem like real people who get along well.

GOOD JOB Fox 5!. So glad Gurvir is returning. I was heart broken when she left in 2000 but I got over it when Suchita came on board. I still miss Suchita but Gurvir will do just as well. She has the experience, professionalism and personality. This is a good move for Good Day Atlanta. I lost interest when Suchita left and really haven’t been watching. Now I will have a reason to watch again. Lately the show has been very boring.

I was the Road Warrior for Good Day Atlanta from 1999 to 2007. When I first came to the station Gurvir made me feel welcome in every way. I had a young family, a son on the way, and I was overwhelmed by the demands of the job. Our desks were near each other and she always gave me a heads up on things to see and do and proper protocol at Fox 5. She was a great help to me.
I remember her last day on Good Day. In fact, she was the last anchor or personality on that show to ever be allowed to say good bye on air. There wasn’t a dry eye on the set when she said her goodbyes. It was a sad day.
As the Road Warrior I was constantly in the public eye and out in public. Years later people continued to ask me “What happened to Gurvir ?”. Well, she’s back ! That’s a good thing for the show. Gurvir is not replacing any slouch. I am a friend and colleague of Suchita Vadlamani and I believe she did a wonderful job behind the desk.
I know Mark, Jeff, and Cheryl well from my days on Good Day. Gurvir will fit right in. Having her on Good Day can only be considered a good thing for the viewing public.
Gurvir, however, will be facing challenges. When she left the show Good Day was only 7-9 am.
She’ll be working many many more hours and probably make less than what she was making before.
If anyone is up for that kind of a challenge, its Gurvir.
I really do hope things work out for her !

Anybody notice Mark is not a nasal as he used to be. I think he got some coaching. He was the worst for taking breaths and talking through his nose.
None of the news stations in Atlanta can touch WGN in Chicago for professionalism in delivery though.

I lost interest in GDA when I woke up one day and Brett Martin was no longer the “Road Warrior”. He always kept me laughing and in great spirits which is tough to do at 6:30am!!! BRING BACK BRETT!!!!!!!

Bring Brett back as the road warrior, and the GDA would have me every morning. Surely, Suchita has gotten her ego in check (trying to use Atlanta as stepping stone to National anchor status), a family will do that. I do wish that FOX 5 would bring back Brett Martin as Good Day “Road Worrier”… Karen Graham stay on as morning sports anchor, contributor, and 9AM co-host. I do miss Suchita Vadlamani too. I’m not all that crazy about Mark Hayes either, and wish he’d leave… FOX 5 hiring a new male co-anchor. I’m okay with Jeff Hill and Cheryl White continuing their weather forecasts and traffic reports.
Good Day will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2012. I still remember the original Good Day cast with Amanda Davis and Paul Ossmann. Amanda moved to the 6 & 10 newscasts, after Brenda Wood moved over to 11… and Paul will be leaving 11 come late May or early June.
