The late Royal Marshall left behind a wife and two little girls. A special memorial fund has been set up in his name to help them out.
The Punchline Comedy Club, where Marshall dabbled in stand-up comedy over the years, will be holding a benefit in his name at 5 p.m. March 6. Tickets are $50 each and 100 percent of the proceeds will go to the memorial fund.
Among those scheduled to speak: Marshall’s boss Neal Boortz, traffic reporter Mark Arum, Dave FM’s Mara Davis and Jimmy Baron, 680/The Fan’s John Kincade, Rock 100.5’s Eric Von Haessler and 94.9/The Bull’s Kristen Gates.
Marshall spent about 17 years at AM750 and now 95.5FM News/Talk WSB, most of that working with Boortz. He died unexpectedly last month of a heart attack.
You can buy tickets at www.punchline.com.
To mail a donation the address is: “Royal Marshall Memorial Education Fund“, Wells Fargo, 1601 Peachtree St. NE, Atlanta, Ga. 30309.

If the girls do well in school and want to stay in state they will get to use HOPE. It is not like the African American community is going to stop playing the Lotto. It is that cultural thing Red Bull talked about. What if the girls are not smart enough to get in college? What if they get Pregnant and can’t go to college because they have to support a family too? Then can the money be made as a scholarship for kids that want to go to college and put in the work to make it happen? There mom has many contacts I am sure. She can get a job. Not that there is no LOVE in our hearts. It is that MONEY is not LOVE. I will bet Royal made more than 90% of the people posting about this issue.
Mr Ho is doing his job and getting HITS. That is what makes him more money.

It’s no wonder Kimz’s been out of work, she spends too much time on the internet spewing her opinion and miding other peoples business instead of her own. If someoen wants to throw this benefit for Royal it’s they’re deal, regardless of how much money he may have made. if everyone thought like you no one would show up at the benefit and they wouldn’t get any money. Royal was a very nice guy and people are willing to do nice things back, no hands are being held out.

No one helped my family when my father died suddenly. He was a good guy as well. Just because he was famous should not mean his family gets the spoils of wealth.
So sorry for his family, but as someone pointed out, he was making good money. He should of planned ahead.

you people have veered way off subject. this isn’t about NOT helping people who are worse off and it’s NOT about ignoring bigger problems in the world. obviously there are people in much worse situations out there. this has nothing to do with them or eathquakes in new zealand or soldiers in iraq. it’s about honoring a good person and helping his family. it’s that simple. if you’re truly outraged at money being spent on the “wrong” things or outright wasted, go protest the federal government.

That is a great point. Royal worked with a man that complained about the Federal Government to make a living. Now the same man wants us to do what he complained about and Royal make a damn good living off of.
Do none of you get how Hypocritical this is of NEAL BOORTZ and Royal? DON”T let the Government TAKE my money to help the Poor but I will give MY money to a Rich dead guy because he was nice. There are a LOT of Nice Good people that are hurting and have families. If you want to give please do, but if you make less per year than Royal. YOU ARE A FOOL. You are getting your money Creflo Dollared and smiling just like the rest of the church congregation.

It is not mean it is wrong for a rich guy to be asking for money. There are people that really could use the help. Royal makes more than you or I or most of the people posting. Sorry to offend some peoples values, but I just don’t understand WHY his family needs help with the money and Stuff he had.

Geeze, people! Let the guy rest in peace. The people who are hosting this event are doing it out of their love and affection for a wonderful man; to honor his memory, to get some closure; to feel like they are doing something helpful in a terribly helpless situation. You don’t have to go, you don’t have to give money, you don’t even have to like the idea. However, out of respect for Royal and his family, keep you d—- opinion to yourself.

It’s amazing to me how some of the fools on here can’t distinguish between voluntary charity and giving, versus the compulsory confiscation for redistribution by the government. There is absolutely no comparison between the federal government using its power of force to take your money to spend and waste as it sees fit, versus individuals voluntarily giving their money for what ever reason they choose to. You would have to be a real idiot to not understand that distinction and try to make that comparison.
Neal has never ever opposed private charity or giving. In fact, he has encouraged private charity as the alternative to the inefficient and wasteful welfare system of the government. Neal has said repeatedly that if someone is in a bad situation and needs help they need to seek it from private charity, churches, family, or friends, not the tax payers. There is absolutely nothing inconsistent or hypocritical about this particular cause, and only the most obtuse would fail to recognize this.

What part of Bad Situation and Truly Needy does ROYAL fit in? Bad Situation is he died way WAY WAY too young, but he was in good(should have been) shape on the money thing. Needy? Yes, his wife will need to find another Nice man to help raise the children and love her, but again money ain’t a problem. he should have been smarter, and i figure he was, than to be like some Pro Athletes and movie stars that die broke and live outside their means.
My ISSUE is this is not a person that really needs help. For every person that has read this can walk down their street and find a family that needs more help, but will not ask for help. I am sorry, but there are people that need help just to have a meal or gas money to go to a low paying job. That $50 could be a tank of gas for a single working mom waiting tables at Waffle House.

Give if want or don’t. I don’t think Neal – or any other conservatively slanted talk show host – is against people giving money to other people. As for asking for voluntary donations – I don’t think they care either way. It’s the compulsory – government directed – giving and taking that is the issue. Royal is dead – he’s gone – can you not have some respect for the dead by keeping your negative comments to yourselves? If you don’t want to give – don’t give.

OK maybe I have come across too mean. I don’t fault Royal or his family or people that want to give freely. We are not talking about someone that REALLY needs the money and that is the issue.
Why doesn’t NEAL run a “THIS FAMILY is in Bad Shape and needs Money” sales pitch everyday? The Punchline can dedicate 1 weekend night a month to give the money to the families that are hurting. I just feel to make it a public issue and to put it in your face is so wrong. The fact is this has been on the radio and in print media so it is not like asking for help from his family, church, or friends that really know him. This is what we do for Police, Fire/Rescue, or Military people not a RICH DUDE people heard on the radio. I didn’t hear Ludlow Porch’s family asking for this type of support. He was actually on the radio FULL TIME(his voice) being the SHOW.

The larger question is, why even have any issue with this at all? This in no way affects your life or anybody elses outside of Royal’s family and the people that choose to participate in this. It seems as if you’re making a stink out of it just for the sake of doing so.

Maybe I was too mean. I just think people could do more and better things with the money. As I said just walk in your neighborhood and there are people that are REALLY hurting and trying to do better in their lives. This just seems like people patting themselves on the back and not trying to help the really needy. It is not like Royal was a civil servant that died in the line of duty. HE WAS RICH or VERY WELL OFF. The neighbor that just passed and buried on Wednesday was 98. There was her family and a few of us friends. She out lived most people she knew. Her family needs help too. Why is Royal more special than many that are nice and needy? I am asking why he is needing this; when he had way more means than most?

All you DumbA$$ that question the benefit for Royal, its not the money its the thought. I am pretty sure Royal had insurance and savings, therefore its a fundraiser for his kids and if you don’t want to participate, then don’t. I am surprised how stupid people are these days. People have these fundraisers all the time and it shows you limited mind capabilities.

So, if you don’t think his family needs help, it is very simple: Don’t give any money. If you know somebody more deserving of a benefit, then throw one for them. Why all the anger that people who loved Royal want to do something to help his family? This does not conflict with Neal’s personal responsibility philosophy because that’s really a “don’t rely on the government” philosophy and this in no way involves the government. So give if you want, don’t if you don’t want, and maybe just say a prayer for the family that lost him so young. It’s still a free country.

If it ain’t about the MONEY then why are people being charged $50 a head to attend? Most shows are $15. Royal’s benefit is more than 3x the cost of a regular show. I will go to another show at the punchline and pay $15 and just think about Royal then. I can afford a few more drinks and TIP the waitress more.

Did it occur to any of you that Royal may not have had life insurance, other than what he had through his employment with Cox? He died because of acute hypertension – if he had the condition for any length of time, no company would write insurance for him. As I recall, he got married in his late 30s, and had been a confirmed bachelor up until then. Perhaps he never contemplated that he would have children and a wife, and did not have the forethought to make sure he had adequate coverage to support a family in his absence, much less educate his children. Maybe he had other obligations to support other members of his family, besides his immediate one.
The point is, we do not know and cannot know what his wife and daughters face. Since Neal is encouraging donations, I feel certain that there is a reason and need for it. As has previously been stated numerous times, get over it! Do not donate if you do not want to!!

Mr. and Mrs. Boortz, for your information, are the ones that started the account for his family with a large donation. If you don’t want to give, then don’t give, but show respect for the family and others who do. I am a senior on SS and unable to give and am raising two grandchildren on my SS but I DO NOT BEGRUDGE ONE THING BEING DONE FOR THIS FAMILY.
