790/The Zone’s newest slogan: ‘Outspoken, irreverent and fun… we’re the other sports station!’

790logo.300_reasonably_small

790/The Zone has created a new slogan: “Outspoken, irreverent and fun… we’re the other sports station!”

Andrew Saltzman, co-founder of the Zone, said the first three words are key. “The personalities we have are outspoken, irreverent and fun,” he said. “That is really who the station is. That’s our positioning as that sports station.”

The use of the word “other” alludes to the fact they are not rival sports station 680/The Fan and also implies that the “other” station is not outspoken, irreverent or fun.

“You can draw your own conclusions,” Saltzman said.

The Fan and Zone have been battling for listeners for years. The Fan, which recently added an FM signal at 93.7, has been gaining the upper hand in recent years. It’s the official home of the Thrashers and with 99X, picked up the Hawks from the Zone last year.

David Dickey, general manager and president the Fan, said the use of the word “other” is for an underdog, not the market leader. “They’re saying we’re Hertz and they’re Avis,” Dickey said. “It’s nice to see truth in advertising.”

The slogan reminds me of the old slogan: “Pork: the Other White Meat.” That differentiated pork from the more popular option, chicken.

The Fan since 2000 has called itself very simply  “Atlanta’s sports station.” Dickey said the Fan had its highest revenues ever last year.

Whatever. I wish the stations would combine and get rid of the overlap and keep the best talent. That of course would be saying bye bye to Steak, Rude, Buck & ol Kincade, the Stews ect…

Till then, won’t be listening.

If by The Fan “gaining ground”, you mean they have twice the listeners…then, yes, they’ve gained alot of ground.

I don’t quite get calling yourself the “other sports station”. They are outspoken, irreverent and fun and by far the best sports station in town.

I will admit the new 790 slogan takes some getting used to… but I think it is spot on. 790 is not the other sports station…not stale, not boring, not conservative. Think about it-Steaky, Stews, Bell…all fit that bill and based on the events the zone puts on…again spot on.

I would also be interested in seeing the “highest” revenue year for 680 as well Mr. Dickey. Good thing your pockets are lined with gold or 680 might be gone.

As a listener to both stations over the years, I’ve seen both sides have their ups & downs. The last few years, it seems all the best players are moving from one side to the other. 680 was smart to put Chuck & Chernoff together opposite the Stews after they both made it over. And the hits just keep on coming. Hometeam, Mitch Evans and now Sandra Golden. Put that together with the first move, John Kincade, and you can see why the ratings war is won most often by 680.

I think both sides could stand to freshened up a bit, but not by some silly “new blood” contest. There’s talent to be found in the podcast world. I also think it wouldn’t hurt some of the shows to have more input from the people behind the scenes, a la the Dan Patrick show.

That’s just my .02 worth.

jals3 — I agree with you and have been saying that for a few years. I’d imagine 790 would get better ratings if people OTP could hear them for the entire AM & PM drive times.

If 790 can add FM look out. Kincaide’s act is wearing thin, I cannot listen to Buck and that idiot anymore. Pollack and Bell is twice as entertaining and makes me laugh.
Morning show at 680 is a train wreck and the fm signal isn’t great in the morning.

this is laughable, obviously 790 is totally capitulating and basically as the bigger better guy walks off with their girl (ratings) all they can do is kick sand and say, I never loved her anyway. As anyone who sees my post knows I can not stand Shapiro at all. It is disrespectful to the other talent on 790 the zone to keep this clown around. This man knows absolutely nothing about sports in the least. A Typical comment from him is ” While i was eating at the Bones that gggk spittll choke (steakies horrid audible reflux) I saw that guy who use to play for the braves and hit home runs,,,,what’s his name……Harry ,,,,,,,Harry Enron…..yeah you know who I am talking about. Then he talks about being Jewish and eating at deli’s ……..who the f cares Stephen.

But 790 could work. Nick is great all the time, bring back Eskimo boy Nick. Chris is passable and would be alright if he would apologize for worshiping Barry Bonds for all those years as he sat down and interviewed the true greats in baseball and did not realize how hypocritical it was to kiss Barry’s Ass and not even admit he was a juiced up freak. Then there the two let’s act old and full of ourselves and don’t even show up half the time, Mr. Ga Tech pompous Ass and 1930’s beat reporter- Fire immediately. The stews -fire them and then sue them for fraud. Not everything has a racial angle clowns. There is a speakeasy rib shack over in kirkwood where the men tie one on and talk sports, Atlanta, and the black culture and tradition barely ever getting into race at all. These older better men could make the stews a forgotten memory in about half a week. The hard part is Bell and Pollack. Sorry Dave but Bell and Arch wins hands down. Maybe they could start floating you around.

Last but not least. Every time Rodney writes about this skirmish it is pretty obvious that Mr. Cho must have a crush on someone at 790 or Kincaid shot down his advances. The bias against 680 from Mr. Cho is sickening. Never once does Cho come out and tell the truth 680 has been pounding 790 for years. They win, They Win, They Win. Take that Cha Cha go home to daddy and get out your tape player in the basement. I triple dog dare to take you radio work and send it to all sports stations, without telling them who you are or having Daddy buy the station,.I bet you do not even get a 2nd interview and probably not even many 1st interviews.

Freakshow…..680 has only been beating the Zone since about the mid point of 2008 and that was only in ratings during the mid day and afternoon drive – hence the reason the Zone moved Bell to his own show. Before then, it was no contest as the Zone practically owned The Fan. I mean even ESPN had to go to the Zone to get any material out of the local sports market when they featured the Southeast or Atlanta sports teams until 680 started pouring more of the Dickey’s money into the operation.

790 needs an FM signal so they can expand their audience (and no, the HD signal does not cut it because only a small fraction of people actually own one). They also need the full reorganization within Lincoln Financial to take effect so they can get more money flowing back into the station like the Dickey’s have done. Get those two going and the Zone will once again be back on top. The only reason 680 is winning now is because they are reaching more people. If 790 had that range, it would be 2000-2008 all over again because the content and character over at the Zone is much better – save Chuck and Chernoff.

Oh and Steak and Saltzman have for years debunked that crap rumor that Steak’s dad bought him the radio station. And Steak was in the Atlanta sports market before the Zone was around. I am pretty sure he would land another gig somewhere because he stirs emotions just like you show here.

Also, Mr. Ho actually seems to have more of an infatuation with the Fan than he does 790. He never seems to miss a moment to write one of these stories and take shots at the Zone.

And to David Dickey…..those highest revenues ever happen to be the result of the Atlanta Braves and nothing that 680 has done themselves. Don’t talk like advertisers are flocking to The Fan because of their daytime content.

They would do much better to focus and build oon the talent that has some intellect when it comes to sports: Dimino, Barnhart, Durham, and maybe Pollack and R.S.

Apart from going that route, they are in trouble. If they want to go low-brow and bathroom humor, there are plenty of other stations that already do that, so it doesn’t help.

They need to raise their standards above 680, not lower them beneath 680.

Longtime ATL Sports Radio Listener

The best sports radio talent in Atlanta is Nick Cellini, hands down.

Dimino and Cellin together are fantastic radio.

Steak used to be really passionate and entertaining to hear, many , many years ago. Once he became a father, he seems to have lost his interest in sports. I get it, your priorites cnhange when you become a dad. Now, it is obvious that he does not watch anywnere near the # of games that he used to, and it seems that each moring he just skims through the AJC sports section and just mails it in. Sadly, he now sounds like an ill-informed, screaming buffoon. It is painful to listen to. The days when Steak is out are incredibly entertaining, as Nick and Chris get back to their old “Bottom Line” swagger.

Chuck and Chernoff are abouve and beyond, the best sports radio show in the South. They know how to entice the listeners and make the show very entertaning. Both hosts prove that they have a passion and deep knowledge of sports. Bring back “5 Seconds” and “Win Chuck’s Lunch!”

I find the Rude Awakening to be very entertaining, despite the smatering of talent. I am surprised to read al of the negative comments regarding Leo. I value his baseball knowledge, his old-school opinions and infectious laugh. Rude is a fantastic point man who has made tremendous strides in his sports knowledge. Where he once was trying to keep up, he now brings inciteful questions and poignant comments to the table.

The two worst talents on Atlanta sports radio are Lorantino and Kincade. The two blow-hards come across as two guys who were picked on in high school, and now have to talk loud and brash to sooth their fragile egos. Both of these guys tell everyone that will listen “let me buy you a pack of gum, so that I can show you how to chew it.”
This type of personality works well on News/Talk, where the likes of Boortz, Hannity and Limbaugh have had huge success in angering their listeners, however in sposrts talk, it just misses the mark. Listeners to Sports radio want to feel like they are having a beer with their buddies.

IDIOTS…..Instead of wasting money on St Louis radio stations or buying into a restaurant they should have secured an FM station to boast their signal (which has always been their biggest draw back) and increase market share here in Atlanta….They were top dog and let the other station pass them and maybe run them out of town.

I’m not sure why I would pick a “favorite” station. I just switch the dial to get to the better show at that time of the day. Both morning shows are a disaster. Barnhart and Durham in the late morning, Chuck & Chernoff in the afternoon, Bell and (hopefully) Archer during the drive home. The Stews shouldn’t be fired for playing the race card. Race issues in sports are real, and are sometimes compelling to talk about. The Stews should be fired because they, their show, and most of their callers are F-ing stupid.

@Tyler,

Thank you, your point are right on. It amazes me that the same people who consistently call the Stews racist probably are saying right on to Rush, Boortz, The Regular guys, etc. when they espouses their blatant racism. I quite frankly don’t care for Ryan, I respect Doug. They may not be as prepared as i would like, but neither are Buck and some of the others. The problem with many who have a problem with the Stews is that they are not use to having someone who is non-white voicing opinions. Race permeates so much of our everyday life, not talking about it will not make it go away or solve the problem.

You are also right about Beau Bock, i mean come on, just because you have been here since dirt was discovered doesn’t mean you should be on the air. He is horrible.

Both morning shows need to be canned. I’d rather have a generic Mike & Mike than local crap. Get rid of Colin Cowherd, Durham and Barnhart, the Stews, and Buck N Kincrap.

You could consolidate the stations and play national shows with local shows at lunch and the drive home and it would be 10x better.

And Crown Royal: I know you don’t read this, but every time I hear the Stews pitching your product (which, unfortunately seems to be every ten minutes) I resolve to not drink it. Not because of race, but because I just can’t stand to hear them talk.

Chuck and Chernoff would never work in either of the drive time hours because their show is geared more towards listener interaction, which would never work in the afternoons or mornings. The lunch-time hours are the perfect slot for them and is where 790 had them forever and with good reason and success.

The reason both left 790 was because of money and Chernoff wanting a drive time slot. Someone over at 680 brought his ego down a bit when they put him back in the mid-day and I can see he now understands why.

As for the morning shows. I like Leo, I really do, but I would be more impressed if he was simply a part of a baseball only show like the Braves pregame. His insight there is very good, but football or basketball talk from him is a little hard on the ears. And the hating on Steak is a little odd. Over the last year the man has taken himself off the air more than that blubbering blowhard Kincaid. Mayhem is more or less led by Nick Cellini and that has made that show more entertaining. Keeping Sandra and putting her back on Mayhem would have been a huge success, but obviously Lincoln is not ready to shell out the cash on the station just yet.

As much as I like the insight of John Michaels at times, he needs to be with the young guns because he brings absolutely nothing to that show. Add Archer full time to Pollack and Bell and you have the best sports show in town and would be very entertaining.

680 keeps winning:

Braves, Hawks, Thrashers (ALL on FM signals), Masters, PGA Championship, World Series, Super Bowl, ESPN programming, ESPN, NBA Playoffs, Chernoff and Kang (best show in town), Kincade (don’t change a thing), Rude (for laughs), Hometeam for Hawks (glad you are back), Dominique Wilkins Coach Donnan, Coach Reeves, Chris Mortensen….. There is no question what the better product is.

The FM signal by the way is great.

790 keeps losing:

The Zone is an old car with a bad oil leak with the check engine light on. Wes Durham and Barnhart…really! I’d love to see them talk Braves or NBA, yeah right. Pollack needs to be cut loose and let Dave Archer take over. The Stews are and have been a disgrace. Steak now works for Lincoln Financial…get off the radio cha cha.

It once was great but now keeps losing across the board. 790 IS “the other sport station.”
