‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ reunion, part one: who’s verbally abusing who?

If “Real Housewives of Atlanta” cast member NeNe Leakes’ wanted to salvage her shredded reputation last night during part one of the reunion, she failed. (There’s always part two next week!)

NeNe spent much of the hour at the Georgia Aquarium taped a month ago looking like she had been sucking on a lemon all day. Even host Andy Cohen acknowledged her sour attitude at one point.

Here’s what we learned: she is still in the midst of divorcing her husband Gregg. “We’re both in a peaceful place,” she said. “We’re beyond that footage” we saw on TV. Did he cheat on her? “Gregg is not an angel,” she said “I’m not going to say whether he has or hasn’t. I don’t think that’s everyone’s business is what I will say.”

NeNe says she hates verbal abuse. Who is more verbally abusive: Kim or NeNe?

And she has not spoken to Dwight Eubanks despite his efforts at a reconciliation on camera during the final episode. “I felt he was a social climber,” she said. “I don’t do those well. It was best we part.”

And the chill in the room between NeNe and Kim Zolciak almost froze the poor beluga whales behind them. The two revived the same argument that began on that tour bus en route to Miami: that NeNe was offended by the way Kim treated her assistant Sweetie.

Even before then, every time one of them spoke, the cameras would show the other looking disgusted. Unlike past seasons, the two appear to be well beyond kissing and making up.

In other notables:

- Phaedra Parks tried to explain her reference during the show of a “donkey booty.” “It comes off the back like a little shelf. That’s the booty to aspire to. You want to rest a plate on that thing!”

- Someone asked Kim yet again about how old she is. She is 32, people. Kim repeated that she did look old season one due to her wigs and makeup. Andy offended Kim a bit by saying she “caked” on the makeup, then backed off.

- Kim, in fact, looked and sounded a bit sedated during the show, at least until the end. She’s not smoking and drinking while pregnant. (She said she’s “pumped” about life and having a baby with Kroy Biermann.)

- NeNe had liposuction during the season. Both Cynthia Bailey and Kandi Burruss admitted doing so, too, in the past. Kandi said she gained 15 pounds afterwards, not realizing lipo is not an allowance to eat all you want.

- Cynthia Bailey, who proudly said she’s 43, did not know her mom and sister considered sabotaging her wedding by hiding her license until she saw it on TV. “It was shocking,” she said, but she didn’t seem all that upset during the reunion. “It was coming from a good place,” she said. She also signed a pre-nup with Peter Thomas, as did Phaedra with Apollo. And the chemistry one viewer observed between her and her ex Leon, she said was illusory.

- NeNe denied having a crush on Cynthia’s husband Peter, despite flirtations. (”I don’t have a crush on anyone,” she said.).

- Phaedra said her comment that white folks only like canned foods was said “in jest.” She said Apollo says he only likes canned foods all the time. “I wasn’t talking about all white people,” she said. To accuse her of racism wasn’t fair because that would mean some sort of intolerance on her part and that is not the case.

- A reader wondered if Phaedra was being truthful about being an equestrian as a child and could she show proof. The show then revealed a photo of her as a child on a horse.

- NeNe and Phaedra argued over whether Phaedra “knew” NeNe growing up. Phaedra never claimed to be buddies with NeNe growing up but said she “knew” her through her older brother. (They are a few years apart.) NeNe said she didn’t remember Phaedra or her brother and acted a bit like a jerk about it. “I don’t remember people in high school,” NeNe said. “I still don’t know you.”

NeNe also apparently called Phaedra before “Housewives” to do a reality show, proving NeNe knew of her at some point before “Housewives.”

- Phaedra proved that she can be really serious and smart, as people tell me. “Housewives” only highlighted her sillier moments. She explained to Kim that the reason why people found her treatment of Sweetie uncomfortable is the history of black folks. “Historically,” she said, “this country has had a troubled past with race relations. We’re just 57 years out from Brown vs. Board of Education when blacks were integrated into white schools. We never forget no matter what you say. We are somewhat more sensitive because of our troubled past. I’m black. I live in the South. it’s 2011 and there’s still racism and people being hurt. We may have a black president. People think we are on equal footing but we are not equal. There’s still a lot of tension. We have to realize that.”

- I just noticed I didn’t even mention Sheree Whitfield. Maybe next week, they’ll talk about Ti-y Mohammad.

NEXT WEEK

Kim and Kandi argue over the money issues between the two of them concerning Kim’s music. Cynthia and Sheree explain why they found Phaedra’s due date issue not overly invasive. NeNe and Kim keep on blabbering.

RATINGS UPDATE

- The final regular episode Jan. 30 broke all “Housewives” records with 4.4 million viewers, one million more than the show ever got before.

Did Nene say sge don’t like verbal abuse? Nene is verbal abuse! Did Nene try to play the race card on Kim to get the other womens against Kim? Yes she did! Very childish. Did Ne-he call one of the housewives a Trans what? She’s is the only woman on the show that has man features. She look like an oversize silly man.
Peter said Nene is a nice person off camera and that is the reason her children’s are so nice. I am not the one to talk about peoples children….but didn’t her oldest son get arrested for POT? Does her oldest son even attempt to look for employment. Who would want to hire him knowing he does pot and can’t open his mouth like a man when spoken to.
Gregg, fame has gone to Ne-he’s head. You were better off without that big he-man. Remember the saying Karma is a B! NE-HE!

You didn’t mention Sheree because she’s boring as hell. They could easily cut her out of that show with no big losses.

I agree with you. He He is a mess. She then had the gall to claim that for her it wasn’t a “black & white” issue. Then why use such inflammatory language and then proceed to bring forth a previous issue that you claim offended you and Sheree and yet neither of you said anything at the time or to the offender (big poppa)? Kandi is exceptionally phony this season. If you are in this music business, then why would you not provide a contract to Kim? Why whine after the fact? You essentially offered pro bono work hoping for good will. Nevertheless, I appreciate them for being so entertaining.

did i just read that one of the social climbers in rhoa called another intermittent cast member a social climber? isn’t that what all of them are? none of these women appear to be prominent professional, business or social leaders in the community and while a couple may be wives do any of them represent a wife in a modern relationship of equal achievers.

@ Indeed – Nene may be a little off putting but everyone seems to just slide over the fact that there are many interactions that are not seen on camera. The fact that Kim acknowledged that Big Poppa was running around calling Sweetie a black b@*^# and Kim’s response is “it wasn’t me”. Sorry but I agree with Nene on this one because being rude and demeaning to anyone should not be tolerated and if you get called out on it then so be it. If your boyfriend (although he is married) is going around making statements like that about your assistant and “friend” and you don’t speak up then… but do you really expect her to cut off her meal ticket?
Phaedra and Nene’s conversation about knowing each other is childish. I graduated with people in the same year that I do not remember. At the same time just because Nene contacted Phaedra about being on a show does not mean that they know each other from Athens… she just knows that she is connected as someone’s lawyer.
Sheree – Boring and can be left off next season, Cynthia – Boring and can be left off next season, Kandi – OK but the singing is kinda annoying and she needs to call Kim on some of her nonsense. Mixing friendship and business can be a big problem.

LOL George! YES, YES, YES…NeNe had the nerve to call Dwight a social climber. I have to give it to her…she believes all her b.s. Let her enjoy the ride for a while and make some $$…because IT IS coming to an end soon! Peter’s toungue should’ve fell out of his mouth when he said “look at her kids”…heck…LOCK AT THEM. That oldest…NO THANKS!!!

Is it just me or has NeNe become an angry, mean, and hateful person?! She used to be one of my favorites, so fun and sassy, but now I think she is so mean and unlikeable. As I watched the reunion last night, I just kept thinking about how much she has changed. I mean she always had spunk, but now she’s just so mean. Although she says she’s “getting her happy back”, she seems pretty miserable and wants everyone else to be miserable with her.

The reunion show was somewhat boring……HeShe, I mean NeNe looked and acted like the show wasn’t good enough for her. For once, it didn’t revolve around her (I am so proud it didn’t) Kim may have flaws as well as the other ladies, but, when it comes to being ghetto Nene wins. I hope when you all see NeNe on the Apprentice show her true colors will come out and once and for all we may be rid of her in Atlanta. Just saying……….

@ Shelley Ann: totally agree on Nene. She was by far my favorite in past seasons b/c her biting remarks and antics were backed w/ humor. Who can ever forget her Kim Song in the limo? This season I didn’t enjoy Nene. Everything was mean spirited. It’s understandable w/ all that’s going on in her life, but at times it felt like the fame bubble had finally burst. All over her head. And mouth. I hope she gets it worked out b/c she looked like a petulant child in every shot at the reunion when the focus was not on her. Too bad.

Why all these negative words against Nene? Who would watch RHOA without Nene? Noone. She gets paid to be a character or role. She is not sleeping with any fool and getting knocked up to be relevant. She isn’t buying a car that gets repoed. She isn’t marring a broke club manager who couldn’t afford a wedding band. She isn’t marrying a con and pop out a baby in a year. So, whats wrong with Nene keeping it real? She is on the show because we love the antics — the good and bad.

My summary, my opinion:

Phaedra-she started the season off looking a little “clownish” but actually turned out to be a very down to earth funny, quirky lady

Sheree-Before I had watched the show I had read about her allegedly stripping her foreclosed home. When I started watching the show I thought she was a bit shallow and vapid but I have to say she has become a very grounded women with a plan and is making her own way

Cynthia-Sorry, nice enough but like Lisa or DeShawn she does not bring much to the table, I can take her or leaver her.

Kim-Kim just needs to grow up and get her prioritize straight. Maybe it will be this new baby or maybe it will be her daughter becoming a high schooler but she needs to focus

NeNe-nothing but a rude cartoon. While she may be funny sometimes her lack of class and her poor manners will be her demise. She will be like Omarosa, notorious (as opposed to popular) for a bit then gone gone gone

Team Nene–the problem I have with Nene is her “character” is not a rounded one, she has become very 1 dimensional and that dimension is Angry and bitter as opposed to her former Sassy and funny.

I don’t recall during the reunion show last night Cynthia proclaiming that she is 43, but NeNe certainly did in her exchange with Phaedra.

I think NeNe does think she is the cream of the crop, but there is nothing wrong with thinking highly of yourself as long as it is not being arrogant. The killer was when they were in Florida at Kim’s friend estate. The nerve of NeNe to invite someone to another friends house and then just tell them her friend (Diana) is staying there, bascially like or not. Kim’s friend should have gave NeNe the boot out of his house, she cannot run someone else’s home. She just kind of told them what she is doing and can’t nobody do anything about it. Just like she was trying to get Cynthia to leave the estate saying “we are divided”. Nobody had any issues but her. I do believe if it’s not about her…then it ain’t happening. I think she could be a decent person, but I think she wants to be that social climber she was calling Dwight.

@ I’m just sayin…Cynthia did give her age when they were talking about the booty’s and Sheree said Cynthia had a butt. That’s when Cynthia said she thinks she looks good for 43 yrs old.

One more commment….why is there so much social drinking on any of these housewives shows? Its like they drink all day long….it has to be a front and for the cameras only because otherwise they would all never be sober. All that social drinking is nothing but making them delayed alcoholics. You cannot think with a clear head with all that drinking and how can you make decisions and function. Cynthia said she was in her suite the day of her wedding drink champange (she started that morning at home) and Peter was suppose to be drink when he said his vows. What’s up with that? Then to, alcoholics can drink all day long and some of them can walk a straight line.

All the black women on that show are racist. Easy to tolerate ONE white woman and none of them do that well. None has ever encountered problems their parents may have had with racism. To claim they did is just a lie and an insult to their parent’s problems years ago. SHUT UP ALREADY. I AM BLACK AND WOULD NEVER CLAIM IN THIS DAY I AM PUT UPON AND PUT DOWN BY WHITE PEOPLE. Get over yourselves and move on. Even I know not to pull the race card and so should you! It is a pathetic choice and looks bad on all blacks. We have come too far for that. Ne Ne – grow up, lose your attitude and work on having a little class.

I thought that the reunion show was good. Just enough drama to keep one entertained. As for NeNe, although she is trying to get her happy back she is in the midst of a divorce, trying to develope an income to continue to live with her children at a comfortable level, dealing with a child who is loosing his way, and trying to keep the drama from her youngest son all at the same time. NeNe take your time and it will all work out. I would be a little “angry” too!

Agreed

February 14th, 2011
12:14 pm

@ Andi, money is not everything. There is not enough money to make me risk becoming an alcoholic or damaging my liver as that is what alcohol will do. Now on the other hand if they want to pay me to PRETEND I’m drinking alcohol then that’s a different story. I have heard before at one time that most of the liquor on TV shows is nothing more than tea and maybe even some sparkling water, or maybe its non-alcoholic drinks, who knows. All I’m saying that if it is real liquor then some of those thousands they make might end up going for rehab somewhere. @ Kay a lot of people are all going through something at one time or another in their life, but that does consitute being angry. If that was the case of being angry because you are dealing with problems, then the average female or person would walk around being angry all the time. You can handle things without being angry and taking things out on others.

Cynthia you claim to be 43. O.k. fine, first of all 43 is a still a young woman. And yes, you look 43, nothing wrong with that. Phaedra, I’m glad you put Mr. Ed “big-teeth NeNe in her place. She claims, she didn’t know you in Athens. Still, she tried to score a gig or part in Bobby Brown’s show. NeNe you are a social climber. You will never have fame because you are not likable. Kim, I’m a black woman and feel you are NOT a racist. NeNe will continue to play the race-card to discredit whatever you do. NeNe stay in Atlanta or go back to Athens. You will never make it in L.A., never! Too many established black well-known actresses are trying hard to get roles and don’t. Why do you think you have a chance?

Can someone please explain to me the fascination African-American women in this city have with their cell phones? I went to a buffet restaurant last night, and had to sit thru a 30-minute meal next to a 30-something woman who never got off her cell phone the entire time she was eating. In addition to that, her 2 daughters (both less than 10 years of age) also had cell phones and also stayed on them the entire time they were there. I’ve watched African-American women running across highways, dodging traffic, while talking on their phones. It’s just unbelievable to me. I just read an article that said that black women make up for 60% of all cell phone calls. Just curious what the attraction and addiction to these cell phones is.

I think it’s funny that you’ve got a show full of self-proclaimed strong women some of whom happen to be Black, and one White woman in their midst who absolutely never brings up race. Yet each of these women feels the need to school her on race relations. Really? Mind your business.

If Kim had demonstrated a need to be schooled, such as being insensitive, or making racially insensitive comments, then BAM, let her have her due. In this case, she pissed off a fat cow beast in NeNe, who pulled a race card. Then each of the other chickens had to come a-cluckin to back up their solidarity. Really? What does NeNe really have in common with the rest of the chicks?

This could easily have been simplified if NeNe had said what she truly felt: You have an assistant and you don’t even work; “I’m jealous you’re talentless and singing more than I am; the spotlight is not on me; I need to cut you down.” That would have made for a much less meaty argument, but would have been way more realistic. I don’t believe absolutely anything in Kim’s behavior is racist. It appears she has a sycophantic/symbiotic relationship with Sweetie, and that’s not my business so long as I’m not paying her.

NeNe is just jealous of Kim and full of vitriol and bile. Every woman goes through jealous moments, the trick is in how you handle yourself. Kim’s a hot mess, but I don’t believe she’s cognizant enough to actually be harmful. And she’s certainly not demonstrated anything racist. Do you honestly think Kim would kick a Black man out of bed?

Jamie either you’re full of it or the article you are referring to is; a call placed from a cell phone has no identity especially since it’s possible to acquire a cell phone without ever getting an account with a company which “may” collect such demographic data such as race and gender. And even if you acquire a cell phone via a carrier they have no idea whether or not the phone is actually for you or if you have acquired it for someone else.

Finally, stop the stupid stereotyping as your limited contact with black women can in no way represent the practices of black women all over the country. Just say to you “it appears that black women are obsessed with their cell phones”. By the way, I am a black woman and I rarely use my cell phone. And when I’m driving I see folks of all races and genders mindlessly chattering away on their cell phone.

@Bubbles, if you watch the reunion show, Nene said it wasn’t about racism. Big Poppa called Sweetie a black b*tch and Kim didn’t do anything about. Kim response “It wasn’t me”. I like many of my friends was thinking the same exact thing Nene was “Sweetie is Kim’s slave.” Like most of Nene’s storms on the show the evolve from her saying what the other cast members think or say behind each other back.

@Jamie

I am a black male and agree with you 100%, in fact this is an ongoing topic with me and some of the guys at my gym. I read a book called the Female Brain, the author stated that the area of the brain that controls conversation is twice the size in female as in male. In addition, the area that control sex is twice the size in male vs. female. That said, i just don’t get why women in general, black in particular, have the constant need to just talk.

I ask anyone to just do an observation driving, eating, in stores, etc. and see who are on the cell phones, i am willing to wager a small sum of money that blackwomen will far outnumber all other races and ethnic groups. Sorry, it is just the fact.

Sisters back away from the cellphone, and the buffets while you are at it! I even see this at the gym, instead of working out intently, you are jabbing away on the cellphone, COME ON!!

@Jen if you want to watch housewives series that contain all white women then you should look at Beverly Hills, Orange County, New York, New Jersey, DC (has 1 black woman) and the upcoming Miami series (which will also have Latino chicks in it). No one is complaining that these other series don’t have black women portrayed in them and the Atlanta series is by far the highest rated one so something is working for these “sistas in Atlanta” whether you like it or not.
