‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ breaks yet another franchise record in ratings

CREDIT: Bravo

CREDIT: Bravo

This past Sunday’s “Real Housewives of Atlanta,” which continued NeNe Leakes’ explosive argument with Kim Zolciak in Miami, gave the show its best ratings ever: 3.43 million viewers.

Locally, the show drew 228,000 viewers, one of the top 20 shows for the week in primetime, just behind WSB-TV’s “The Bachelor.”

“Real Housewives”  is now averaging more viewers than it did season two, at about 2.9 million per week, and remains the top franchise among the six “Housewives” that have aired so far. The season started a bit slow in terms of viewers while airing on Monday but since its move to Sunday, the show has far exceeded its season two numbers.

There are so many franchises, Bravo is airing two at once. “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” season finale on Jan. 20 drew 2.76 million viewers, thanks to a fracas between the two sisters.

“The Real Housewives of Atlanta” will air its season finale this Sunday at 10 p.m., followed by two weeks of “reunion” footage shot at the Georgia Aquarium.

In other ratings news, BET’s “The Game,” shot in Atlanta, drew 5.9 million viewers in its second outing, with 337,000 viewers in Atlanta. That’s down about 23 percent from its monstrous 7.7 million debut but still an impressive figure for BET. I’m checking to see how the show did last night. The new  “Let’s Stay Together,” also shot in Atlanta, held about 59 percent of “The Game” audience, which is considered mediocre retention.

And oddly, “Top Chef: All Stars” on Bravo is lagging behind recent seasons of the show in ratings despite the “all star”  designation. The show drew 2.3 million on January 19 for “Restaurant Wars,” with local chef Richard Blais winning the $10,000 prize for best chef performance.

Sorry, but this show is so NOT Atlanta. It is crazy how we are represented! Basically, white trash vs Black women trying to get famous. Very sad that this has continued. The other shows actually show some women with class rather than women screaming and pulling wigs. They are making the women of Atlanta look dumb and uneducated. Please let this be the last season of them!

Robin please, anyone of any intelligence, knows that these women do not represent Atlanta–and furthermore, you obviously haven’t really watched any of the other housewives show, or you’d know that these women are as shallow and catty as the Atlanta women–they just have a little more money. I watch the Beverly Hills one also, and believe me, having money does not make them look like girl scouts. It’s all for entertainment and that’s ALL it is.

Hmm let me see now…trash trash and more trash. I said this to wife and it struck a cord with her. How can women specifically black women expect respect when we allow ourselves to be petrayed and paid money to act like complete idiots for a national audience. We scream, march, and protest every single thing under the moon, but when it comes to dignity towards our women, we go hide and say its great entertainment.
I would be appalled to allow my daughter to watch such defication on television. There is a time when stereotyping cease to categorize all black women, OH and the one white woman on the show. How do black men stand up and say here is my proud black women when the media makes them out to be loud mouth, cigarette smoking, hair coloring bi–ches..Really, its an insult to the REAL AFRICAN AMERICAN HOUSEWIFES, who are professionals on thier job and committed wifes to thier husbands.
Oh by the way WHO’s MARRIED ON THIS SHOW AGAIN????????????

I must agree with Robin. This show is showing such a bad taste of Atlanta women. I am surrounded by many women with just as much money or more, living in million dollar homes, lavish lifestyles and they wouldn’t think of behaving this way. Not a chance! What a travesty that people watch this and think this is Atlanta? REALLY? It’s a disgrace to say to least. I suppose people like to watch superficial women stab each other in the back, show NO MANNERS at all when invited to someone’s home (NeNe… she’s off the charts rude). This is far from being a classy woman in Atlanta… guess if it draws attention to that many, there are lots of others who condone this behavior. One hour of this is more than enough! Just sayin… terrible depiction of TRUE Atlanta women!

Seriously?

I had been unable to escape the hype which seems to be everywhere regarding this spectacle. I have never viewed any of these shows until this last episode. I could only make it through 20 minutes and it only made me frustrated that it was 20 minutes of my life that I can’t get back. How sad for our culture that not only do sponsors support this tripe but that people actually plan time to view it on a regular basis. This Kim chick is something else (and NO I don’t want what you have because I don’t think you have much). I pray that these women are guided by someone with some sense and never let their children view this horrible programming. Probably the funniest line I heard was the black chick saying “there are things you just don’t say to a black woman”. What an idiot (oops ….is that one of those things). You’re not special honey, like all the others you are bought and sold. Good luck to their kids. Hopefully they don’t end up as warped as their mother’s.

Oh female Black folk – why so much shame?? We are who we are, wether we’re educated, professionals, scholars, forward thinkers, monied gentry or…not! Remember, we’re ALL individuals and no one else represents you – YOU REPRESENT yourself! So, why be ashamed or upset etc when someone not like you or how you feel your race/gender/town should be ‘represented’ is featured on a show?? Remember, we’re all individuals – you’re NOT responsible for someone else’s behavior because they are your race or gender. Just represent for yourself! So hold your head high and carry yourself the way you choose and just let NENE be NENE! Why would ANYONE see a resemblence in you…and if you’re still upset because you feel people see a little NENE in you, well, maybe that’s what you’ve displayed….just saying!

It’s funny that the RHOA is the highest rated of all of the Housewives series, considering that most of the cast isn’t rich (or married). I wonder what that says about viewers who enjoy the series, that they don’t mind watching the lives of people who pretend like they have money, over the lives of people who have two pennies to rub together.

I used to work Grady ER. Lots of black nurses, doctors, techs, and other staff. Most of them are class acts, especially the ones from Nigeria and Jamaica…oh I miss you folks. But we had some that could be just as low down, and trashy acting and talking as the ones from this show. One on one, they were ok, but get them in a group together, and omg, all the blackness showed up and classy went out the hallway. We had a lot of patients and their families that acted as bad as the Nene’s on this show too. Most of them were on welfare. It is a shame that people think this is a good thing, and their upbringing, or lack of it, just perpetuates this kind of behavior, and then there are those who do know better, but somehow think that the show makes it ‘ok’ for them to act this way. The men of this culture don’t seem to be all that either. But until you learn self-respect, and act accordingly, your treatment will always be second class, no matter how you dress it up.

Everyone knows this is pure entertainment with a bit of truth. All of the negative comments assert your ignorance and jealousy. Most of you are quick to demoralize African-Americans if they join in on the money making ventures. We reward and award actors and actresses for their acting skills in an astronomical way. Some of their behaviors outside of the screen is atrocious—take Charlie Sheen for example. We pay to be entertained. Why complain about it!!!!!!!!!!!! I enjoy watching RHOA because I know it’s entertainment.

This fascination with reality shows took off with the Flavor of Love and has not stopped yet. It has nothing at all to do with class. People watch as shown by the ratings and with this the women accomplish their goal – a paycheck! Unfortunately the real housewives of any city are dealt a blow because the first requirement is to be married and role models for their children and communities. The fact that Sheree was married to an athlete and had access to millions and never educated herself or acquired personal wealth; NeNe and Kim were able to attach themselves to men that for a limited time finance their shallow lifestyles until they were broke but the women share the same character; Phaedra, an entertainment attorney got pregnant mariied and controls a young criminal that needs her finances; Kandi has money and sense will likely be the next casulty of leaving the show for better things; oh and the latest addition seasoned model will marry an older financially strapped man neither of which contributes much to the show; all accompanied by women and others that seek fame by addining themselves as walkup housewives. Anyone with with a minimal amount of common sense would never view these women as anything other than well paid clowns trying to make a living. There is a reason they are not married.

It is unfortunate that Atlanta is a melting pot of people from all over the world arriving with diverse backgrounds and cultures. It should be noted that Kandi is the only character on ROHA that is actually from Atlanta. And even with wealth, there is new money and old money. Old money usually is accompanied by class and good breeding, new money is what you see here and with others – rappers, athletes, entertainers. You cannot buy class either you have it or you don’t.

@ JUST ME – no disrespect to you, however, you should braoden your circle of black people. If your basis on ‘typing’ blacks or ‘the blackness’ (that ’showed up’) is based on impoverished health care workers who are perhaps one generation removed from the welfare roll call, you’re cheating yourself and underserving society in general. What you were observing in the ER was most likely poor people taking their first step to better their lives by getting off welfare. Unfortunately, when you’re raised from generations of poverty and destitution there isn’t a refinement course that comes with it. Through socialization, hopefully they and their children will be and do better. We can hope. But don’t believe this is relegated to ‘black’ people. Poor is poor in any culture and exhibits very similar behaviors. I’ve seen many, many, black, white, yellow and brown NENEs….and like NENE, several of them were NOT even poor!

Atlanta is a great city and for those who don’t like it, the airport has return flights to wherever you’re from, the buses and trains run daily and the interstates are open! Reality TV is Reality TV it’s entertainment at its best.

If you are confident in yourself, your culture, your accomplishments, this show cannot change that. As successful people no matter what culture, these characters do not represent you. I watch and laugh along with the rest of America and I am delighted that this does not represent who I am or my firends and family. Anyone that would sterotype anyone based has problems of their own.

Everyone is so quick to talk about the RHOA and make generalizations and stereotypes about the entire African-American community based on the 5 African-American cast members on this show; however, people don’t make the same generalizations or stereotypes about Caucasians or Italian-Americans (who are still Caucasian) based on the behavior of the cast members on the Jersey Shore. Why is that? The cast members on the Jersey Shore are just as trashy and ignorant, if not more, as the castmembers of RHOA. They are constantly drinking, partying, fighting, and having one night stands. Snookie is always intoxicated and was even arrested for public intoxication. J-Woww and the other females are always in some kind of physical altercation. Just about every cast member on the Jersey Shore has brought someone home that they just met at the club that night and had sex with them. They are all just disgusting but noone makes stereotypes about the Caucasian race based on the behavior of the Jersey Shore cast members. I am an educated African-American woman who realizes that you cannot make stereotypes of an entire race of people based on the ignorance of a few. Therefore, please don’t stereotype the African-American community based on the 5 African-American cast members on RHOA. BTW, Kim is just as trashy and ignorant as the rest of them, and she’s white. Like so many bloggers before me have said, it’s a show. It’s for entertainment purposes only. If you look at this show for some kind of enlightenment, then something is wrong in your life. Depending on who your cable provider is, there are at least 60 other channels you can watch. If you don’t like the show, change the channel!!!!

When ‘The Jersey Shore’ debuted, many Italian-American groups protested MTV and their “guido show” for the way it protrayed them as a group. I supposed the feared viewers making stereotypes about all Italian-Americans , based on 8 20-something kids on MTV.

I watch the show, I am amazed every time at how absurd it is but I do get a good laugh. The only thing that “irks” me is that Nene, who is hilarious, does not seem to realize that she is only popular because she is like a cartoon. Like SpongeBob square pants she is a joke and like SBSP she is famous because she is a joke. She seems to take herself seriously, like she thinks she is really appreciated and respected instead of realizing she is just comic relief and a spectacle. I am not trying to be mean but ‘c’mon does she really think her success is because anyone actually respects her?

@Chaz, give over it! I’m soooo sick of some black people being embarassed by what other black people do. Who cares?! This is entertainment. As a black woman, I AM respected because of I carry myself, not how some reality star behaves on TV. Get real. If you’re being disrespected maybe you should carry yourself differently.

@Just Me, I’m sure it is Just You, because who else would want to be around you. Get over yourself.

@DrJ, you’re dead on but you’re arguing with idiots! If they weren’t they would be able to actually defend what they’re saying and understand what you’ve said. It’s obvious they can’t so just move on.

I watch every week because I enjoy the entertainment. Would much rather watch RHOA than The Bachelor.

Calm down, people.

To: Robin R & all the others with friends with “money and class, ” peep this: if you and your friends aren’t 2nd or 3rd generation professionals (as in, doctors, lawyers, etc.) then you’re NOT considered a REAL part of Black ELITE anyway.

If you or your friends don’t belong to Jack & Jill, Inc. (or you don’t even know what that is) , then you’re NOT considered part of the Black ELITE. I

f you or your friends were not debutantes (with old-line exclusive social clubs, NOT sororities/ fraternities), then you’re NOT considered a part of the Black ELITE.

If your man is not in the Boule (or you don’t even know what that is) then you are NOT considered a part of the Black ELITE.

MONEY cannot get you into these circles, only pedigree…that’s why athletes and entertainers can’t even BUY THEIR WAY into them. And again, sororities and fraternities cannot automatically count their members as part of the Black ELITE (though they try to, silly rabbits (lol!).

Get a grip, this show is entertainment, ONLY. People with sense KNOW these women will NEVER be a part of the Black ELITE. True members of this circle would NEVER be caught dead on a show like this.

Just get your laugh on, people and enjoy.

Dr J, you can’t reason with ignorance or people who just don’t have depth. Forget about it. I am a well educated black woman, married to a well educated black man (a physician no less) and I watch this the show and a couple of other “reality” shows for sheer entertainment. It is a train wreck and that within itself prompts curoisity, hence the high ratings. I also listen to NPR and read the Wall Street Journal, and volunteer in the community. So, unlike most folks here, I’m not narrow minded. It’s not that deep. For me it is a guity pleasure. Period.

@ Talented 10th, real success is not measured by what family you happened to be born into or what club or organization you are a part of. In my opinion, a true successful person is who comes from nothing and builds their own wealth and success from their OWN DRIVE, DETERMINATION, KNOWLEGDE, AND PRESERVERANCE without relying on the family name or their family’s socioeconomic status. I’m not knocking those who are born into wealth, but I most certainly do not put them above those who are not. People who feel it is necessary to make it known that they are part of “elite” organizations are superficial. You brag about being part of those organizations to make yourself feel good because you are not strong enough to stand on your own.

Talented 10th

January 28th, 2011
3:58 pm

@ Oh Please; not even close, my dear. Who said I was a member of any of the organizations I mentioned? Well, I am/was (lol!), but that’s not the point.

I’m simply trying to educate the masses on the fact that we Blacks DO have our own social tiers within our community and they are NOT represented on RHOA. These tiers are evident in ALL RACES WORLDWIDE and have been around for thousands of years, so please don’t launch a fight against me on the subject.

Now, back to OUR organizations: if you didn’t know they existed, now you do. Aspire to be a part of them as oppose to ripping them up and down-playing their importance. Most of these groups have been in existence for 100 or more years. There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to be “elite” in the way you carry and present yourself in society, DAILY. NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. It’s also about having standards.

Lord knows the Diddys, Tupacs and NWAs of the world have glorified being a gangsta, an ignorant thug and/or baby daddy (not a “husband”) to many of our youth. If being a snob is the opposite of that, then I’ll gladly wear that label.

Ponder this: where would our race be today if the “gansta rap” of the past 2 decades was replaced with lyrics about being a doctor or belonging to old-line, elite social organizations? Keep your heads AND STANDARDS high, people.

Oh Please

January 28th, 2011
4:28 pm

@ Talented 10th the intention of my post was not to rip down the organizations. As far as you know, I may be a part of a few of them, but I don’t feel it necessary to state my position. I was merely stating that NOT being a part of the “elite organizations” does not make one less successful or important. There are several very influential, famous and wealthy people who are not members by choice. My comment was not directed at you. I was referring to those who always feel the need to make their membership known. It was only intended for you if you fall into this category. I am not dogging the organizations it’s some of the members who make the organizations look bad and this is found in all organizations. There will always be people who misrepresent the purpose of an organization for their own shine; feeling the need to down others to make themselves look good.

Thing is no matter who we are, we all know people who act very similar to the women and men on this show. And it is stereotyping to an extent, and they are making money off of it. So are many of the comedians, and of course, the rappers, hip hoppers, and gangsta thugs. It is true that Grady is inner city, but it is also the trauma center for the area. They see a broad spectrum of life. And it isn’t my only experience…it was just an example. I have only watched three episodes of this show over the past two years, most recently last week. I actually turned the sound down when Nene went off on her tangent…All of my neighbors are black, and I didn’t want them to think I was having a party;) As for “DrJ”, I have known some like him too. Heck I may even know Him…but I bet I didn’t like him. Not because of his color, but his attitude. Good people are good people, no matter what color, race, or religion they are. And I find nice people everywhere I am.

Dr J You make a good point but you have your nose in air you uppity negro……yea you heard me. Ivy league education does not qualify you to be god. I wish people would stop thinking just because you went to an Ivy “skool” you are now eligible to have the powers to part the red sea. Stop worshipping yourself, your killing me.
But any way what it all boils down to this all that “reality TV”
is really an easy way out for someone to be famous for acting inappropriately and have no true acting talents what so ever.
(Jersey shore?)
Its all very simple if you do not like the characters or whatever on these shows SHUT YOUR TV OFF. (the average person watches 3-4 hour of TV a day any way…go to the gym or walk your dog instead.) I find it pretty amazing that people are quietly obsessed with these shows but many people are so bored with their lives that the get a guilty pleasure watching these shows to confirm that they enjoy watching people going through drama.
Thats why I call these shows “player hater TV 2.0″
On these shows Think about it, all they do is argue and fuss about some pretty petty matters and for what ever reason many people worship these “untalented” individuals. In regards to Housewives of Atlanta
Its really nothing more than an “upscale Jerry Springer show”.
NeNe is upscale Ghetto for real and Kim? She is nothing more than dressed up White trash.
Is this REALLY entertainment? That is for you to decide.

I tried to watch the show a couple of weeks ago, but couldn’t stomach it. The “Real Housewives” series plays on stereotypes that everyone in this country has…that women from New Jersey are married to mafia bosses and are always loud, that women from Beverly Hills are all blonde with fake boobs, and that all women from Atlanta are black and loud. It’s the Bravo network that plays on these stereotypes.

I think that that the way some of the women act on the show is disgusting. People say that there is a lot of labeling of black people, these women actually put names to that label. It is a shame because I know so many black people who have a lot more class than them. On the other hand you have Kim who I believe is a wanna be black person. How is it that her parents have no accent but Kim tries to talk with a black accent?. I guess that some people will act any way for money. I would never let my kids watch that show and think that it is okay to act like that. Even if is just a show, some of these women are absolute trash. Honestly Jesse how can you even embarrass yourself by saying these women are the real deal.

The saying “most men live quiet lives of desperation” holds true as human beings are always pursuing something of material value instead of internal self value and hide behind their real emotions by not being their authentic self. These women are being who they are(in most situations) with no apologies which is more than most people can say as most people always try to say the “right thing” or act the “right way” so that others will like or accept them. That is real insecurity and not being one’s authentic self but most people are too insecure to be an individual and are always seeking their acceptance and self love through others approval. Be yourself as many people are judgemental and hypocritical because of their own insecurities, arrogance or elevated opinion of themselves. LOVE STRONG!

Stop hiding behind the RHOA show, to show your prejudices and bigotry toward Black people. For every Black person that you see as demeaning their race, you can find the exact number in the white race, also. The ladies on the show DO NOT represent anyone but themselves on the show, but I would hazard to guess that the majority of them on the show are so far removed from the parts they play on it, simply because it is scripted. Once upon a time, the worst show on TV for me was Jerry Springer, but recently I started watching it. There are times when it is hilarious’ there are times when it becomes just downright buffoonery–that is when I change the channel. If everything on TV was about life being perfect,we’d all be up in arms–that’s why we have so many channels and choices…and that is a very good thing.

I don’t know why everbody’s hyperventilating over “how Alanta women are being portrayed.”
Relax…anybody with half a brain knows that those six women were selected because they were fun to watch and brought the drama. Yes, we all know real housewives are prim and proper and are so above it all.
But don’t hate. That show is fun to watch. I literally laugh out loud when watchin it, and that doesn’t happen often when watching TV.
