Katy Perry’s ‘Teenage Dream’ spends third week on top of Atlanta radio

Katy Perry is seemingly everywhere on TV and radio. “Teenage Dream” is part of her ubiquity as the song spends its third week as the most popular song in Atlanta.

It was heard on Star (62), Wild (116) and Q100 (62) the past week. Spins are down 42 spins week over week.

Rihanna’s “Only Girl (in the World)” is the No. 2 song in town, getting spins on the same three stations (though only once at Star 94.)

Wild appears to have cut back the frequency of its top 5 songs from 125 to 130 times a week to 110 to 120.  So those songs are now spun once every 87 minutes instead of once ever 80 minutes.

Latest songs added to radio stations:

Kicks: Brad Paisley “This is Country Music,” Darius Rucker “This,” Sugarland “Little Miss,” Taylor Swift “Back to December”

The Bull: Darius Rucker “This,” Easton Corbin “I Can’t Love You Back,” Brad Paisley “This is Country Music,” Jason Aldean “Dirt Road Anthem”

Star 94: no adds

Q100: Eminem “No Love”

Wild: Black Eyed Peas “The Time”

V-103: Cali Swag …

Fish 104.7 goes all Christmas, followed by B98.5 four hours later

3231110Again, 104.7/The Fish was the first station to go all Christmas this morning. The Christian pop station opted to open the Christmas doors the same time as a year ago: the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

At 8:07 a.m., Amy Grant’s “Jingle Bells” heralded a month-long holiday tradition that is expected to include more than 8,000 songs. This is the station’s ninth year of switching formats at this time of year.

B98.5, which last year zoomed to No. 1 in the ratings the minute it brought Santa Claus into town, chose the same time as 2009 to launch its format: 11:59 a.m. with Bobby Helms’ “Jingle Bell Rock.”

The first station in Atlanta to go all Christmas happened was then Peach 94.9 a decade ago. Fish jumped aboard in 2002. B98.5 followed in 2004. In 2006, Peach (now Lite) dropped Christmas in the middle of December for a country format, 94.9/The Bull, leaving Atlanta with two all-Christmas stations the past four years.

If you want your Christmas music with a bit more spirituality, …

Did Bristol Palin win ‘Dancing With the Stars’?

Jennifer Grey had the time of her life, ultimately taking home the mirror-ball trophy tonight.

By far, she was the superior dancer compared to her competitors: the exuberant, youthful Kyle Massey and the controversial Bristol Palin. From a pure dancing perspective, only Brandy had a shot at beating Grey but she was eliminated last week.

Was Jennifer Grey the right pick?

  • Yes! She deserved it.
  • No! I preferred Bristol
  • No! I preferred Kyle

Grey’s role as Baby in “Dirty Dancing” gave her the instant nostalgia vote. The thoughts of her and the late great Patrick Swayze was especially resonant early in the competition. And her fans embraced her roller-coaster ride  of  injuries and emotions.

This season 11 spurred more blog-Twitter-Facebook buzz than any prior one thanks to Palin and the political connection with her mom. As a result, the ratings on Monday night jumped to 23.7 million, the highest of this fall for …

True Oldies 106.7 dropping Scott Shannon, adding local mid-day host, modifies playlist

Scott Shannon, mid-day host and creator of the True Oldies Channel, will be losing his mid-day spot on True Oldies 106.7.  Local jock Kristen Charles will be taking over.

“We want to be live and local,” said general manager Paul O’Malley. “I believe in live bodies as much as humanly possible talking to our customers and clients every day. It gives us a competitive advantage.” Competition, in his mind, is not just other AM/FM stations but XM/Sirius, Pandora and iPods/iPads.

The branding and music mix has been adjusted as well though it’s not format change. Its now called Atlanta’s Greatest Hits, as the new logo shows. Presumably, the phrase “oldies” is now considered too “old” to draw younger listeners.

Among the artists featured on the web site banner: Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, Billy Joel, the Rolling Stones, Elvis, the Beach Boys, Rod Stewart,  the Supremes, the Monkees, Aretha Franklin, the Eagles and Jackson 5.

V-103’s Elle Duncan clashes with Nina Brown

Elle Duncan

Elle Duncan

V-103 morning sports/entertainment host Elle Duncan clashed with afternoon producer Nina Brown verbally last week. If this had happened behind closed doors, this would not be news. The problem: a snippet ended up going on air.

I received the audio. In it, we only hear Duncan: “Stop with that s*** too Nina, like you’re so [bleepin']  holier than thou!” A few seconds later, Ryan Cameron went on air as if nothing had happened.

I have no clue what the argument was about and what led to this comment. I also have no idea how even a few seconds of it ended up going over a live mike.

UPDATE at 4 p.m. A source who actually heard this argument last week told me that she heard Brown may have flipped the mike on herself on purpose and thus got in trouble herself. She even had a chance to “dump” the audio after the fact because the show is delayed 45 seconds. She did not.

UPDATE at 9:59 p.m.:I have now heard that Brown is no longer at the station. And that the …

Channel 2 WSB-TV adding 4 p.m. news program once ‘Oprah’ leaves

Life after “Oprah” next fall, Channel 2 WSB-TV will add a 4 p.m. news program. As a result, the station will hire 20 more news employees, according to general manager Bill Hoffman.

“We’re excited about our news expansion,” Hoffman said in an interview today. “We’ve got such a strong news brand, the best thing we can do is expand.”

“The Oprah Winfrey Show” has been a dominant ratings force for more than two decades. Even though Oprah will end original episodes in May, repeats will continue through September. Hoffman said he will start taking applications now and will start the hiring process before September.

Channel 2 Action News is the No. 1 news operation in Atlanta and has been for many years.

Hoffman said the station has not decided who will anchor the 4 p.m. news.

Currently, CBS’s WGCL-TV is the only local affiliate with a 4 p.m. news program and runs three consecutive hours of news from 4 to 7 p.m., including Katie Couric’s CBS evening news program at 6:30 p.m. In the …

Star 94 matches 2009 total in radiothon for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta

Star 94 raised $560,212 last week for the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, slightly more than in 2009.

In eight years, Star 94 has raised more than $7.7 million for the hospital.

Here’s what the new program director Scott Lindy had to say in an email Monday:

That’s a little higher than last year and an amazing amount of money considering the down economy, dozens of GA banks failing and having our state above the national average in unemployment. When times are tough Star listeners still find a way to give over half a million dollars to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Impressive.

2010-star-94 careathonI’ve been tracking pledge totals since 2004:

2004: $1.167 million.
2005: $1.2 million
2006: $1,215,834
2007: $1,212,437
2008: $825,284
2009: $558,000
2010: $560,000

The station’s falling ratings and a rough economy have impacted fund-raising the past couple of years.

You can always donate at the hospital here.

‘Dancing With the Stars’ finale recap: do you love me?

There were no major surprises tonight. Kyle Massey was vibrant and fun. Bristol Palin put in her best effort. And Jennifer Grey is the one to beat.

jennifer-grey-and-derek-hough-photo_343x515Why Jennifer Grey will win: She has gone two weeks in a row with perfect scores from the judges. She has pulled off slow dances well, fast dances well, sultry dances well. She’s passionate when need be, sexy when need be, athletic when need be. She has managed to get past nagging injuries and emotional distress midway through the competition to ride this one to the end. Nice echo to “Dirty Dancing” last night in her free-style dance (aah… the watermelon!)

Why she won’t: She’s been almost too good. Voters may just get complacent and assume she’s safe. To some, she comes across as a bit too confident, maybe a bit too desperate to win.

Odds of winning: 1-1(odds I gave her before the competition: 10 to 1)

What if Bristol Palin wins “Dancing With the Stars”?

  • She earned it!
  • That’d be the worst pick in the history of the …

Kim Zolciak says she’s pregnant with child No. 3

tuesdaylifeandstylemagazinekendrawilkinsonbaskettkimzolciakpregnant“Real Housewives of Atlanta” star Kim Zolciak is pregnant with her third child, she announced on Twitter today.

She also linked to a Life & Style cover story featuring a photo of her and her boyfriend Kroy Biermann, an Atlanta Falcon defensive end. They met at the Dancing Stars of Atlanta charity event this past May, as chronicled last week on “Real Housewives.”

Looks like Lee Najjar (”Big Poppa”) is no longer a factor in this picture.

Zolciak has two daughters we’ve seen on the show but I’m not sure who their father is.

Jonathan Jaxson, a gossip writer who first revealed her pregnancy in late October and used to work with Zolciak, said she is also putting her townhome up for sale. He runs a site called Dishin’ the Dirt.

She had denied the pregnancy in recent weeks, including to Q100’s Bert Show. “I am not pregnant,” she told Bert late last month.  She deflected the question again last night on Bravo’s “Watch What Happens.” “Do I look fat?” she asked Andy Cohen, the host. …

People who are into more current music can enjoy specials featuring Taylor Swift on NBC or Beyonce on ABC Thanksgiving night.
