V-103’s Elle Duncan clashes with Nina Brown

Elle Duncan

Elle Duncan

V-103 morning sports/entertainment host Elle Duncan clashed with afternoon producer Nina Brown verbally last week. If this had happened behind closed doors, this would not be news. The problem: a snippet ended up going on air.

I received the audio. In it, we only hear Duncan: “Stop with that s*** too Nina, like you’re so [bleepin']  holier than thou!” A few seconds later, Ryan Cameron went on air as if nothing had happened.

I have no clue what the argument was about and what led to this comment. I also have no idea how even a few seconds of it ended up going over a live mike.

UPDATE at 4 p.m. A source who actually heard this argument last week told me that she heard Brown may have flipped the mike on herself on purpose and thus got in trouble herself. She even had a chance to “dump” the audio after the fact because the show is delayed 45 seconds. She did not.

Nina Brown

Nina Brown

UPDATE at 9:59 p.m.:I have now heard that Brown is no longer at the station. And that the argument had something to do with some left-over pot-luck sweet potato pie. Seriously!

Duncan was off the air for about a week in what appears to be a suspension and returned this morning to the Frank and Wanda morning show, where she has been reporting sports and entertainment the past few months. Previously, she has been a mid-day host (her spot has yet to be filled) and before that, Cameron’s sidekick in the afternoons.

Duncan’s boss and V-103 general manager Rick Caffey declined to comment, per company policy.

Brown declined to comment. Duncan did not respond to text messages.

Since November 17, Brown has been posting scripture on her Twitter page.  For example:

“But where sin increased, grace increased all the more…” -Romans 5:20

Bc I only have control over my own thoughts & actions, I will not focus on what others lack, but instead focus on who I am… God’s child!

I walk thru the valley of the shadow of death absolutely fearless w/ a smile on my face & joy in my heart! Haters hate it, but God LOVES it!

God has the ability to not only order your steps, but ur stops as well…

Live mikes can be dangerous.

Back in 2004, the Regular Guys (then on 96rock) got in trouble when the morning team accidentally aired some dirty talk over a Honda commercial. Given it happened after the Janet Jackson Super Bowl brouhaha, the team ended up losing their jobs. The irony: Larry Wachs was trying to mock the FCC by airing backwards porn. The problem: while he was taping a porn star talking dirty, it went over the air. (The Regular Guys are now back on the air, safe and sound, on Rock 100.5)

V-103 listener but com'on

Elle does come off as waaay too loud and sometime obnoxious, and she has to talk over everybody…Just like last week when they were having a serious discussion about young teens and of course everybody in the studio are adults and they didn’t agree. Who was the loudest? Elle…I like Elle, but she needs to tone it down, and sometimes Wanda can be over dramatic at times too, and so silly. Wanda just needs to relax on the jokes, because her jokes are not always funny…Frank Ski is cool, but I get the impression they he would rather have Elle as host than Wanda, because Wanda somtimes has all this buffoonery behavior that uncalled for. Finally I stop listening at 10AM because why did they put OSAI back on? He has no personality, and what the deal with Romona DeBreaux? She should be doing the 10AM show..

At the end of the day, does any of this really matter, well maybe to women and men who want to be women which is like percent of the dudes in Atlanta.

UPDATE: Nina Brown no longer works at V-103. I have a close friend that works there and he confirmed that Nina resigned yesterday and sent an email to a few of her favorite co-workers thanking them for helping to make her 6 years of experience at the station great.

It’s unfortunate that something like this had to go down, especially when the argument supposedly began because of pie leftover from an office holiday potluck. With the FCC alert, and the fact that Nina allegedly turned the microphones on to get Elle in trouble, I’m sure corporate heads gave her [Nina] the option of being fired or quitting… but does that leave Elle untouched? I mean, the words did come out of HER mouth, but I guess it doesn’t matter because she was back on air today… right?

I’ve met both ladies before, and though both could use a dose of sincerity and “warm fuzzies”, I never would have expected that such a display of UNprofessionalism would be broadcasted on the airwaves for all of Atlanta to hear… but that whole place is chaotic… from the top on down… and when those in position are unprofessional and catty, then I suppose a staff that mirrors the same behavior isn’t surprising at all. #gofigure

I am a professional african american woman who works in the media profession. Elle needs to be terminated immediately. I don’t care why she said those things but it creates a hostile work environment and the situation needs to be handled immediately – a slap on the wrist is unacceptable. Nina Brown should sue their employer for allowing a co-worker to attack her in such a manner while in the workplace. Its time for the management staff to be relieved of their duties. Elle should have been forced to resign and never allowed to re-enter the workplace. Its appears the management staff promotes that type of work environment which makes them liable for any wrongdoings. NINA PLEASE SUE THE EMPLOYER FOR ALLOWING ELLE TO HARASS, INTIMIDATE AND THREATEN YOU. PLEASE GO FORWARD AND LET THEM KNOW YOU ARE FEARFUL OF ELLE AND THE HOSTILE WORK ENVIRONMENT THEY HAVE CREATED.

V-103 has done something few urban radio stations have accomplished, consistently stay at the top of the radio ratings heap year after year.. High ratings = higher advertising rates so Frank and Wanda are not going anywhere since they are the soul of the morning show. Franks intellect and inquisitiveness, combined with Wanda’s heart and passion for people make for a great duo.

Frank & Wanda occationally debate cetain topics and most of the times engage listeners in the debates but whenever Elle inserts herself into the discussion she comes across as a spoiled brat who screams her opinions whenever she disagrees with someone. This is a huge turnoff to the morning listeners. They need to mover her back to the juevenille Ryan Cameron show in the evenings and bring someone in with more maturity and is less grating in the mornings.

ELLE NEEDS TO BE FIRED IMMEDIATELY. I AM WRITING/CALLING THE FCC TO REPORT IT!!! NO ONE SHOULD TALK LIKE THAT IN THE WORKPLACE. FRANK AND WANDA – KEEP UP THE GOOD JOB!!! ATLANTA LOVES YOU AND ALL THAT YOU DO!

Nina’s irritating, I hope she really is gone. And if she turned the mic on, w/o Elle’s knowledge, then she would be the cause of an FCC violation. Therefore, she should go.

Elle is the perfect example of the quote “It’s better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.” Pretty girl but still very young in the media business and ignorant or inexperienced on a lot of things. And I’m convinced Frank Ski is gay. How many dudes walk around saying “OMG”??

V-103 has not been worth spit this millennium, without a doubt(actually, longer than that-I’m just being generous). This is coming from someone who grew up as a kid recording the Fresh Party on Friday Nights in the late 80’s. I have tried to give the station, and its numerous personalities chances over the years but it just comes across as lame, stereotypical BS! I have no idea who Elle Duncan is, but the fact that this type of behavior happens on V-103 is not shocking at all. I’m just thankful I was aware of other options out there. I refuse to listen to this Cooning, & Tom Foolery. Stop supporting this garbage!

In the workplace – there is something called ethics… i guess you have never worked in a professional environment. There is an expectation for adults to know the policies and procedures. Surely, Elle broke the rules by talking like that in the workplace…

First of all, Nina doesn’t have a case against V-103 because she broke company policies and procedures when she didn’t follow proper procedures and the mic was turned on allowing the conversation to be aired. Her resposibility as the producer of the show is to be the director. She’s to insure that the broadcast is aired flawlessly, which she did not do. Therefore, they have every right to FIRE her, in which she will not be eligible for unemployment benefits at ALL! As for Elle,, Elle has every right to file a law suit against NINA for setting her up and purposely causing undue stress to her! I’m interested to know what transpired BEFORE the mics were turned on. That’s going to determine if Nina has a case at all. But for right now, Nina potentially ruined Elle’s career and ELLE has a case in my opinion especially if they fire her!

To Ms. Reality,

I work for the Georgia Department of Labor. You stand CORRECTED… Nina does have a case against V103. Elle does NOT have any grounds to file a lawsuit – she used vulgar language which creates a hostile work environment and could possibly escalate into a physical situation. I’m sure you have violated company policies too (i.e. browsing the web, making personal phone calls, exceeding lunch periods, reporting to work late — do i need to list more). Elle does not have a case. Also, Georgia is an employment-at-will state and certain circumstances will allow you to collect unemployment if you are terminated. The Georgia Department of Labor offices will be open tomorrow if you would like to call and verify the information regarding collecting unemployment.

I have disliked Elle since she was mysteriously given a job on The Two Live Stews! I always had the feeling that she was sleeping her way into these jobs because her voice is awful….her approach is lack luster….and she is just overall boring and blah! I actually stopped listening to V103 during the 10AM slot when she was named the host. I have now stopped listening all together now that she is on the morning show. I love Ryan and Rashan….but I have to lay some of the blame on Ryan for even bringing this no talent to the station. I wish that I could sleep my way to the top….I could be Michelle Obama! LOL

in response to yomomma, there are plenty of women who know and can do sports. hell waok had one of the best in the nation when rose scott was on there. i heard her on the falcons and v103. that show was hot then the two ladies talking relationships. that’s when waok was actually pretty good.so this is the best they can do well maybe elle should just read scores and not try to fake it. v103 shouldn’t even be giving sports stick to the trashy hiphop housewives bs they’re so good at! espn radio baby!

BACKGROUND TO THE SITUATION:

@Ms. Reality – Would you believe it was over PIE… (please see my previous comment above)?

According to my male friend who works there, the verbal brawl apparently began with Nina trying to keep Elle from getting some pie that was leftover from a holiday potluck. Pie that Ryan told Elle she could have. At that point, apparently there was a negative, “harrassing”, text message about Elle that Nina intended to send to one of her friends, but sent it to Elle by mistake, which caused Elle to come back into the studio and continue the argument.. the rest is history.

If anyone has a kwasi case of innocence, it’s Elle, but both are undoubtedly guilty of being unprofessional…. and that’s a common trait at V-103.

Chandra, Just so that you know, I am an employer who recently fired an employee for breaking company policies when she created an environment that made it impossible for my business to function by tampering with our equipment. In my opinion, Nina used the equipment in an inappropriate manner when she aired a conversation, regardless of the conversation, that was not a part of the morning show. In doing so she violated FCC laws and could potentially cause V-103 the license to broadcast the radio show. For that reason, Nina’s actions jeopardized the company’s ability to function and therefore she doesn’t have a case! Regardless, anyone that would jeopardize her employer in this manner needs to find a new career bc she’ll never get another chance in radio with her track record! Her irresponsible behavior could potentially ruin BOTH of their careers! Very unfortunate, they both just ruined an opportunity of a lifetime! As for ELLE, don’t EVER allow anyone to take you there… in the end it’s never worth it!

I no longer had any interest in listening to V-103 when they let Miss Sophia go, and I have never looked back, so I don’t really care. What has been said about Nina Brown and her scripture quoting though, reminded me of a supervisor I had at the old Southern Bell. That witch with a “B”, sat at her desk, read the Bible and played gospel music like nobody’s business, but she was the worst human being that you would ever want to encounter in life, so it was no surprise to me that she eventually got fired, because she was insane!

I, too, stopped listening to the morning show. I tolerated Frank and Wanda due to the community outreach. Elle is very unpolished and lacks proper diction and etiquette. Her discourse is often conducted to overtalk commentary by Frank and Wanda. Speaking the loudest does not equate to being the brightest. She brings no value to the show. I cringed when she solicited listeners votes to appear on Regis and Kelly. The very thought of her representing Atlanta! She first should be an understudy before receiving air time. A shiny penny spends like a dull penny but still a penny. Her self promoted “pretty face” has little value on a faceless radio. Just my humble thoughts…

Rodney is so right, Ryan played it off like nothing happen and just continued on, but I guess he had to do that, What else was he really suppose to do? It was crazy though. Ok. I was there. This is what REALLY happened…in SPECIFIC DETAILS…

Part One: The Hunger For More!

See Elle didn’t bring a lunch that and forgot to eat a healthy breakfast when she arrived at work at 540am to prep for the morning show . Throughout the show her stomach continued to growl very uncontrollably to the point that a joking Wanda Smith mentioned that there were two delicious sweet potatoe pies in the V-Fridge that could save the starvation. Elle knowing that she had a scrumptious homemade pie waiting for her hungry self couldn’t wait to chow down on it. Towards the end of the show Elle received a call from a friend offering to take here to lunch. She needed to do some production work before heading out to satisfy her now 12 hour hunger pangs (yes Pangs not pains…get a dictionary). She was overly excited to not only have a great lunch but would be able to have a homemade sweet potatoe pie to take home and devour by her lonesome self.. so around 12 noon she headed out to lunch…PART 2 ” The Conclusion…The ..Battle of the Pies” Coming Soon…
