Whatever happened to… Flip Spiceland?

flipLong-time WXIA-TV meteorologist Flip Spiceland voluntarily left the station in early 2008 for what ended up being a short-lived public relations job which lasted all of three weeks because a grand jury went after the company for fraud.

Spiceland then repped North Metro Technical College. But that college merged with another one, leaving him jobless again.

Recently, he found a position with the United Way, helping with fundraising in Paulding County working out of the Douglasville office. “I’m delighted,” he said. “It’s really rewarding.”

He’s used to still being recognized “almost constantly.”

And with a name like Flip Spiceland, that’s understandable. He said when he calls companies to remind them about United Way contributions, people have called the area director to make sure it wasn’t a joke. He also does face-to-face presentations with companies. The last one he did, in which he discussed logistics related to the campaign, ended with a Q&A. The first question: “Is Flip your real name?’

(It is more or less. His birth name is Philip Howard Spiceland but his parents always called him Flip.)

Spiceland worked for 21 years at CNN as well from 1980 to 2001 before going to WXIA for seven years.

I asked him if he’s glad he’s not having to do the Wizometer, the recent gimmick WXIA introduced in which they rank weather each day from 1 to 11. He is glad he doesn’t have to do it though he can’t blame the station for the marketing tactic. He said this morning he heard Chesley McNeil, his replacement, give today a 5 out of 10 and noted tornado warnings. A colleague in his office today mused: “If a tornado warning means a 5, if he says 2 or 3, should I run for my life?”

I keep thinking the Wizometer is a Urine Test Machine. Bad idea. They need to drop it fast! Plus, Kirk Mellish already has the best meter in town. Dont rip it off WXIA!!!

Can’t a retired well-known meteorologist find a job teaching at a university? After all, he has an “–ologist” at the end of his title. If that title really does mean more than “weather man,” then someone needs to learn how to do it right? Surely, some GA college must offer some course that would be right for Flip, even if it’s in the broadcast journalism department.

File this one under “questions nobody is asking”.

I miss Flip. I watched him when he was on CNN years back and was glad to see him again when he migrated to the local market. He always appeared “real” on the air; was always framing things in a humorous light and never seemed to take himself more seriously than the news or weather he was reporting about. The on-air personalities of today act as though their demeanor is more important than the message they deliver.

I wonder if Flip looks at objects and says he loves them. He loves lamp, he loves carpet.

Art, you are SO right! Some of the weather anchors (ahem, CNN) need to stop taking themselves so seriously. Goodness, you’d think they were doing a play-by-play of someone’s funeral… And this is when they’re talking about **sunshine forecasts**!

Hey, cable weather people, get some Immodium or get OFF camera!

The Channel 11 news was part of my morning routine for years, and I always enjoyed Flip’s forecasts and on-air personality. He must be relieved to be away from the joke that Channel 11 has become….from the station that “offers you change” to the station “that actually helps you!” Oh, and let’s not forget the Wizometer or the screaming kids at the end of the news broadcasts: “11 Alive! You’re the ones!”
How can a station have fallen so far, so fast?

I am glad to know that other people are as turned off by 11Alive as I am. I thought I was just getting cranky. The Wizometer was the last straw. Channel 2 is so much better. I like Robin Roberts and George Stephanopolus much more than Matt and Meredith.

I always liked Flip. I thought he had a good blend of personality and intelligence. Of course that wouldn’t help him now with whoever is running the show at 11Alive.

The Wizometer is intellectually offensive – and I don’t feel like the meteorologists even buy into it – clearly their delivery of the “score” comes across as less-than-enthusiastic – this was one marketing tactic that was not properly market tested…. clearly – I give the Wizometer a negative 1.

Well, the Wizometer is 1 – 11. And yes, I couldn’t BELIEVE Chesley gave today a 5 considering there was a severe thunderstorm warning and a tornado watch all day! He is crazy. Bring back Flip!!!!

Worked with Flip at CNN. He was great to work with. Always had a good sense of humor and didn’t have that inflated ego seen in other talent. I wish Flip much luck in the future.

I am glad I am not the only one who dislikes the WIZ. It highlights 1-11 instead of the actual temps. That 1-11 is in the beholder’s eye, their 11 might be my 1. The graghics are annoying and crowded. I have now swicthed to channel 2 if I need to see the rating number, I go to CBS. CBS’ is simple and straight forward.

I watched Flip before CNN, when he was the weatherman on WICS in Springfield, Illinois. The WIZometer is an insult to our intelligence…I refuse to watch 11 Alive local news until they dump it…maybe they can recruit Dagmar?

I watched the morning news on Channel 11 for at least twenty years. The introduction of the Wizometer moved me to Channel 2. The word is just so awful. While I miss Jill Becker, life goes on. At least I don’t have to hear anyone say something that sounds like a device that measures output or temperature from a bodily function.

Reporting the weather is not Shakespeare. Just report the chances of precipitation, high/low temps and MAJOR weather events as crawls or program interrupts. Do not insult viewers’ intelligence by lathering us up from “it’s going to rain” to “we’re all going to die soon because of thunderstorms”. And another thing, David Chandley could make a dewpoint reading sound like Armegeddon with all his theatrics!

Why did Flip leave the weather biz? I want the rest of the story. I also happy to read I’m not the only one that thinks the Wizometer is a joke. How demeaning for educated people to have to deliver the weather in such a silly way. Doesn’t Chestley(sp) have a PhD?

October 25th, 2010
10:13 pm

11Alive sucks. Things must be hard for weather people in ATL. One long time Weather Channel
meteroligist now works as Chestley’s ASSISTANT. Like having your mother as your assistant.
She probably has years more meteroligist experience, but 11 Alive does not/will not count that.

11 Alive is horrible! The WIZ? My GOD such an insult.
Flip should send out some resumes or try talk radio.
It sucks being shoved out to the United Way – Douglasville office, much less the Douglasville office for anything.

WXIA sucks…….always has, always will. With all the changes they’ve recently made, they now ignore the bad stuff going on in and around Atlanta…….and report only the good. I’ll stick with WSB!!

I worked with Flip at that “short lived PR job.” The man never wore socks.

October 25th, 2010
10:45 pm

Glad Flip has found something fulfilling to do. Most of us spend our lives and careers never figuring out what actually makes us happy, and then we die wondering what life was all about anyway. Those who DO figure it out, are the real winners.

News is a funny thing. I swore off watching news some years back on the grounds that I’d rather read what’s going on than see what a TV station thinks I should know. I don’t feel like I have missed anything. Except a lot of stories about shootings and DUI and other local crap nobody needs to know about.

And the weather? No matter how many forecasts and meters and gimmicks and fancy stuff they put on the screen, the bottom line is that none of it will change the weather. The weather will be exactly the same tomorrow even if there was no Chesley giving tornados a 5. He could give them a 10 for that matter and the weather will still be the same.

So if something is going to be the same regardless of what they tell us on TV, why bother listening to what they have to say? They don’t control it. They can’t change it. They have no power over it, any more than the lunatic on the corner at Five Points.

I do my own weather forecast: I look outside and choose a jacket or umbrella when needed. This technique is very simple and has never failed me.

Patrick, you must be like many many 15-35 year olds. As long as it dosen’t affect me – why care.
Your gods are rock and rap and drink. Rocking and rolling and drinking right on thru the years!.
Watching the local news keeps you informed and apart of the city. But you can live an un-affected
un-caring, un-informed, just more don’t give a damm jerk filled life.

Quit watching WXIA when they decided they were the station that “helps” you and were offering “change”. What’s that? Trying to strap on to Obama’s tag-line? Helps me do what? Chesley and the Whizometer is a joke. At least WSB treats the viewer like they’re half-way intelligent.

October 26th, 2010

People I love the Wizometer and the changes that have taken place at 11Alive. While I miss Flip, I love that i don’t have to sit and hear every murder, traffic accident and have stupid live reporting out side jails as coverage for someone who is deep inside. I love the product testing and the whole entire positive vipe at 11Alive. I hate Flip left he would have fit in nicely!

Great idea about the teaching slot – unfortunately, colleges require a Master’s en route to a PhD. And as for the socks – in the ’80s, Ted Turner and Lewis Grizzard were also sockless. I’d say that’s pretty good company.

Chesley ath the entire WXIA team are a bunch of idiots.. that Wizometer is the dumbest idea… I think people are smart enough to decide on their own what kind of a day it will be.. and certainly going to 11 just because of the station identification adds more lunacy to the idea.. I don’t even know where they got Chesley as that guy can’t even communicate half the time. They must have been hard up that day.
