Get thee to the plastic surgeon! ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ recap, ep. four
“I still wanted to look like NeNe, the black woman that I am – but a better version.” – NeNe Leakes to People magazine.
To be on a reality show, you need to have a base level of vanity. So it’s not surprising a high percentage of the “Real Housewives” on the various franchises appear to have had work done.
But NeNe Leakes wouldn’t necessarily be the first one you’d think of who would have work on her face. (Her breasts? A different story.)
Yet there she is in Monday night’s episode getting a nose job on top of a breast implant reduction and some liposuction.
Her excuse? Stress over her son Bryce’s problems and marital issues with Gregg. She has some cash now. Her rationale: why not take advantage and do something for herself for a change? During the entire storyline, Gregg is absent from the cameras. While she gets drugged up before surgery, she asks for him (”I need to see Gregg!”) and it’s kind of sad. She has a friend Diana be a surrogate support system.
It’s great to see NeNe in non-drama mode for a change. She comes across as vulnerable and almost sweet – at least until the drugs wear off.
The other big plot line revolves around Phaedra Parks’ over-the-top baby shower. Parks hosts more than 150 people, with ballerinas and a dance with Dwight Eubanks because her husband Apollo found it too “girly.” Women even get male escorts as they enter the party. “Where are we? Chippendales?” Cynthia Bailey snarks.
And we even get to see former “Housewife” cast member Lisa Wu Hartwell, who refused to play RHOA games and left earlier this year. Regulars will be amused that the producers felt compelled to place her name on the screen twice and not explain why she disappeared.
Kandi Burruss was also in a major snark mode: “I love Phaedra but the rhinestones on the eyelashes are bourghetto. Bourgeois and ghetto at the same time!”
“Someone stab me in the neck and put me out of my misery!” Cynthia added. (That’s probably what a lot of RHOA viewers were thinking!)
In other plotlines:
- Kandi and Kim Zolciak talk about Kim’s next move in her music career. Kim is a bit clueless but thinks she might do a song based on something said by Jimmy Kimmel: “That ring don’t mean a thing.” (As of this taping, she was dating Lee Najjar AKA Big Papa again!) Kandi, who did her production of “Tardy for the Party” for free, wants some money from Kim to do another song. She says that to the camera but does she say that to Kim? Not that we can tell. We also get to meet Kim’s parents for the first time and they complain how they hardly ever see her. And they encourage her to go to church. Nope. She isn’t changing a thing.
- Sheree Whitfield is now dating fake “Love Doctor”/life coach Tiy-E Muhammad. She pops in to his relationships seminar in Decatur, where we also get to see Carol Blackmon of Majic 107.5, too. Sheree seems quite smitten, assuming of course that this dude has money. I’m surprised she hasn’t asked for his financial statements yet.
- Cynthia Bailey joins Phaedra for the annual Steeplechase event and finds Phaedra annoyingly full of herself. She also has to hold back her husband Peter when Phaedra badmouths him to his face about having five children. “We’ve got to get out of this limo,” Cynthia said to the cameras. “My man is five minutes from choking Phaedra and going to prison himself.” She also likens Phaedra as “the black Tammy Faye Bakker.”

Phaedra responded on her blog about what she said last week re: black vs. white households. She was vague though and didn’t respond in specifics:
I have received numerous comments about the remarks that I made on the episode that aired on Monday, October 18, 2010. I feel the need to respond to those comments, because I believe my remarks were generally misunderstood and are being used to portray me as someone I am not. I am not a racist. My heart has always been open to people of all races, ethnicities, and walks of life. If that were not the case, I would not have fallen in love with and married a man who is biracial and was raised by a white woman. The reality is that we live in a society where matters of race are not discussed honestly or openly for fear of being labeled a racist. And that really needs to change if we’re going to move forward in any meaningful way as a melting pot of ideas, viewpoints, and experiences. While I do regret any discomfort or offense that my comments may have caused, I believe it is important that we use opportunities like this to create forums for dialogue and growth, not for personal attacks.
And starting November 7, the show (currently on Monday nights at 9 p.m.) is moving to Sunday night at 10 p.m. to anchor Bravo’s first entry into original programming that night.

This is embarassing! None of these people are housewives, they all work because their husbands have nothing. Kandi is the only one that may have money dude. NeNe is “akin” brand new with her new found success and thats why her and greg are fallin out. She dont need him anymore when he too her broke a** in. Its embarassing. Why do we have to go to athens to find two broke a** women to represent Atlanta. Phaedra is country. The baby shower was unbearable. It was simply crazy as hell. I along with a few other million people happen to love the show! If you dont like it, turn the channel! Why does it bother you? I dont miss Lisa at all, glad that wanna be perfect girl is gone! I really like Sheree this season more and more. I have always liked Kandi. Kim is good tv, a mess but good for tv. Nene, the ghetto, ex-stripper can go somewhere and get over herself. The worst most degrading one on the show! Not sure why the Cynthia girl exist and Phakedra is also good for tv. She thinks shes more than she is. Now, honestly who ould want to watch a show with all them boring wives that someone just listed. Good tv is good tv, an RHOA is great tv!

It bothers me because all of the RHOA are BROKE!!!! Try looking at the RHO Beverly Hills or New York. It’s Pale in comparison!! They are actually housewives and they pretty much have money fallin from the trees. RHOA, its not so and they all are sisters. The Show should be “strugglin azz housewives of atlanta”. Sheree, Kim, Ne Ne,= money from the show. Houses are rented. Cars are rented or leased. Cynthia’s husband Broke! Phaedra’s Husband… No comment, just got out of Jail. WHite people sitting back laughing at this sh**. Atleast the list I named actually have money and are married. And people wonder why I have stopped dating men from Atlanta without a background check. Not only is the show insulting to the hard working and accomplished Black and white women of Atlanta, it is just a mess. Kandi is the only one who has any money or class. And I might add style. Do I watch the show. No. How do I know about it because it is all in my face. What happened to a sense of civility. And we wonder why our children, especially our girls, are the way they are.

10 years ago, I was approached about participating in a reality tv show. I considered it for the experience, not to become some flash-in-the-pan media ho. Until I spoke to a couple of people who had already been a part of the show. Each said that, looking back, they wish they hadn’t have done it. That they were ‘edited’ to portray a role and it was about creating drama. It was not an accurate reflection of who they were.
However, when it comes to RHOA, the way they are portrayed on air is not far from who they are. Many people in my circle have interacted with these women, either professionally or via their children, etc. Consistently, the feedback and experiences affirm their low-class and lack of integrity.
I’m sorry but the woman who claims to be classy and a lady while dangling her red furry lingerie demonstrates you cannot take the trailer trash out of the girl. I keep visualizing Elizabeth Berkley in Showgirls talking about her “Ver-sayse” (Versace) dress and the description of lipstick on a pig.
These women are an embarrassment to Atlanta.

Housewives!! You think of someone cleaning, cooking, taking care of children, running to the store, and school. If you are a real housewife, you don’t have time for parties, and you don’t have money for limosines. I watched the show 2 times to make sure I was seeing the real thing, and I turned the channel as someone suggested. This show is embarassing for any housewife. They should call it “The Socialites of Atlanta,” because these housewives are not real.

Why Phederas marrriage will never work!, and how come Sheree who is usually so astute – did not read the article in the AJC about Tiy-E – the Fake Dr.(with the fabricated credentials) long ago when the story broke. — for someone “in the know” — she doesnt know too much. One phone call would have told her to leave him a lone. But I suspect Bravo knows all about this — and it will be part of the the story line.
DRAMA – that is what this hot mess is. Sad is the actual words we all need to start using.

couldn’t really watch last nigh daughter called in from Dallas, but what I did see was horrible. Phaedra character and truly that is what she represents. These ladies keep me in stitches!! Bravo is here to bring a show, so the credibility, wealth, and class of these women are not a qualifier of getting on the show. They have to be broke, ghetto, and classless. I get it, and it is a guilty pleasure of mines to watch the show every week.
Phaedra is hilarious. I think she got it wrong though, her husband is use to eating jailhouse food where they make grilled cheese sandwiches with an iron. So of course he is not use to her fine southern cooking.

Ok, I admit it. I watch the show. I actually watch most of the Housewives shows. It’s escapism; mindless. But sometimes you need that.
Having said that– compare the Atlanta show to any of the other shows. We’re a laughing stock. A joke. We’re the “ghetto” group. Yes, the women on the other shows are outrageous, plastic, shallow, whatever. But the Atlanta group is portrayed (accurately?) as ghetto, and it kinda gets old that we’re the “joke” of the entire series.
Anyone who thinks this show does anything positive for Atlanta or for AA women is in serious denial.

I wouldnt have called NeNe gorgeous before but her face matched itself. Now, really – does she look better or an artificial attempt to seek out the “Barbie” complex (all races, ethnic groups can fall into this phenom) and modifying the features that she was born with esp those that are defined by her parents, grandparents and her African American racial heritage – the features that her sons inherited from her. I felt sorry for NeNe last night. Where was Gregg? I can see why she would divorce him for not being by her side last night. WOW….that was so sad. Cynthia man has 5 kids and he is 50? So I streamed a little last night online, basically to see what Phaedra’s become. In her defense she looks to have the preggo lips thing going.
The quote that stood out and immediately proved that Cynthia is just as delusional as the rest was when she said about moving to Atlanta from NYC, “It’s nice to be a big fish in a small pond”. Honey, this is ATLANTA the Black Capitol of the USA for the upwardly mobile and civil rights legacies! Everyone lets take a moment and seek to be introspective. The silly housewives shows are just a reflection of the people that are cast in them and not a true image of any of the cities represented as every city has a mixture of the haves, pretending to have, and the actual have “nots”. Who cares as the world is a “screwed up” place with all the silly shallowness that many pretend to act and be and wrong priorities that many posses that will never bring true fulfillment and happiness. Internal happiness is just that and doesn’t need approval and “fanfare”from others. Being genuinely real is difficult for most people as we are insecure human beings always searching for “things” to bring meaning to our lives and then many find themselves as if not more empty and the cycle starts again. Acceptance of one’s self is a daily journey that can’t be found in things or others but only in yourself through spiritual or other introspection which can present a sense of peace and greater fulfillment that does not have to impress others.

One of the comments mentioned where are the dignified African American women? Stacie from RHODC is extremely dignified with a great family, job and lives a charitable lifestyle but people didn’t tune in because of the lack of drama.
RHOA is pure entertainment. Sheree seems to have let her guard down. Nene’s powertrip may have ruined her marriaged. Kandi is still doing her thing, Kim is a hot mess, Phaedra is delusional and Cynthia does add a touch of class to the show. My friends and I hook up on FB and laugh for the next hour. It’s hilarious!

It’s just a show and no more represents Atlanta than Jersey Shore represents the folks who live there. These execs know we love to watch train wrecks. What are the two Housewives shows that are always mentioned – New Jersey after the overturned table incident and Atlanta with all the drama and all the broke ladies pretending to have money. My friend is a producer for RH of Atlanta and he said they originally wanted to do a show called African American Housewives but knew it wouldn’t fly….so they picked a large African American city (AKA ATLANTA) and thus the Real Housewives of Atlanta was born. It definately doesn’t represent anyone I know on Habersham.

This is only entertainment. I do admit that these woman are not housewives of ATL but they do bring the drama. They are who they are on and off the screen. KANDI -is just real! She is not trying to make any friends and deal with any BS. She all about making a dollar and saving her money. She never tried to be a high profile chic. KIM-she is just BLOND. Even though it’s a wig. She don’t need anymore chances at singing. She is done. She did have me laughing on the nutcraker comment though..LOL! NENE- Just NeNe! Let her have her 5mins of fame because she has never had anything else. I must say she did look like Whoopi in the “Color Purple” when she stated “Is we gon get a drink now” LOL. The Model Chic-not important and i still don’t know her name but last night she did show me is that she is not at all prim and proper…She is straight GHETTO..but hey I liked that side of her because it might give her another season on this show. Sherry (Sheree..I guess)-Is angry as hell and broke. You might as well start with payless online because soon you will be shopping there. Phaedra-FAKE! A pastor child but your child’s father is a convicted felon. Honey please!! The playing innocent phase is not working. She might as well have had a baby by Peter. At least no one has said he was a convict. But Ms. Parks, APOLLO is so damn fine but Sherry’s (Sheree..I guess) hairstylist could probably tell you more about that from some of his buddies that went through the Federal prison with him. Your money and those greasy lips aren’t going to keep him honey.

Why is Cynthia , a young beautiful attractive woman , involved with an old short broke black man.They look very strange together. Is the shortage of men in Atlanta real and not a myth to the point that a fine classy sexy woman like Cynthia has to resort to dating an old broke man.
Wealthy , professional , attractive black men are glaringly absent from this show. However , it is still enjoyable.

The show is very scripted. My blonde daughter, her east indian/columbian friend, another white girl with brown hair and an african american boy and I are the group in the Piedmont Park Dogwood Festival sitting on a blanket scence where NeNe and Cynthia Bailey first start telling about her problems with Greg and her son. There were so many powdering her nose and make-up breaks. We are spliced back into the scene.

Cynthia….is gorgeous. Not ghetto in the least. A breath of fresh air. I wanted to be stabbed in the neck after that baby shower.
Phaedra….RHOA=Big fail. Rhinestones on your eyelids are so country, Queen. Get a grip, you are trying too hard. Lose some of the lip gloss, your soup coolers are too massive for all that shine. Looks like you’ve been eating pork chops without your hands.
NeNe…..with the exception of the Dwight incident…has toned down the ghettofabulousness. Old nose was better, but I understand the need for change.
Kim…..child please. You can’t sing a lick and if Kandi decides to charge your behind…then we won’t hold our breath for that next single.
Kandi…tone down the red hair. You are looking like Ronald McDonald’s illegitimate sister.

when are ppl going to realize that “Housewives” is a play on words. In each of the Housewives series (OC, NY, NJ & BH), there’s only going to be maybe one “true” housewive. Lets not go name calling, I do think the woman, do not set a good example of Real Housewives compared to the other shows… The woman on the other shows, are mostly married, or come from money.. example the hollywood wives omg! They don’t even compare…The only one I love love on the show is Kandi, and although she had planned to get married she is not now, but she is still a great additon to the show.. Either change the name of the show, or change the cast! Either way the show is like a trainwreck! Can’t stop watching!

While I do find RHOA quite embarrasing and over the top at times, I find it much easier to turn the channel, but can’t wait for the next episode to come on. Everyone is intitled to their own opinon and that is why we have freedom of speech here in America (ran) and I have to give it my fellow African Americans for coming such a long way in the television industry.
Some of the previous comments were well warranted like Ty-i-muhummad’s head looks like someone fired a speeding bullet down the middle of it….It does and that was quite funny. Dwight did put you in the mind of a black Willie Wonka, Phaedra’s baby shower was a little over the top, Kim needs to be on the REAL HOUSE WIVES OF THE TRAILOR PARK, Kandi is doing her thing and is quite classy, Sheree is very shallow and seems to have nothing to offer any man even if he does work at payless, Cynthia big fish you may need to jump back into that pond you came from becuse you seem to just not fit in. NeNe why did you do that to yourself, when you come back to Athens girl we really are not going to know who you are.
With all that being said and done it is all ENTERTAINMENT, scripted, but before I go I will leave with this last thought, RHOA may be tasteless and lacks a lot of class, but what about those shows like Jackass where those guys make complete fools of themselves and go on to make not 1, but 2 movies about their buffoonery?

This discussion PROVES why they are still number 1 in the REAL HOUSEWIVES Franchise! They were the first set of “Housewives” to bring the type of drama and from that moment forward, RHONJ, RHONY and RHOC had to pick it up with their drama. No matter the opinions, RHOA set the tone. We can all come back week after week to talk that trash, but we’re all still going to watch! Then, get on the computer to be JUDGES/CRITICS!!! LOL

Sherae…I liked seeing her with her daughter and she seems to be a lot more likeable and less bitter this season. She is actually funny.

Enjoyed the show last night. I am still shaking my head at Phaedra’s fat greasy lips, lack of common sense, why insult the couple you shared the limo with, did it ever occur to you that they consider his 5 children as something other than baggage???, and that ode to urself of a baby shower…at the racing stripe down the center of Dr. Tiy E Mohammed head, is that the result of a hair club for men membership…at poor NeNe, I hate to see a marriage that was once so strong fall apart right before our eyes…and at Kim thinking shes a bonafide pop star, and making plans for her next “big hit”.

I am embarrassed by the depictions on this show; it’s sad that people watch it and support it. I was fortunate enough to advance read a book that speaks about the imagery of black women in the media; folks need to check it out: Living Well Despite Catchin H*** (and there’s a subtitle). The negative imagery of black women isn’t helpful to the community and for general perceptions by all races. Who cares if the other series’ women look stupid? Doesn’t mean you have to, too.

The show was slow and I didn’t really have any favorite parts. Phaedra once again was a clown and looked like one too. Dwight still looks like he is sick. I hope not. I must admit it’s fun looking at the old shows on channel 69. Check out LOGO-A-LIST OF NY…this show is off the chain, it’s another housewife show but it’s about gay men. Entertainment galore!!!

After watching the RHOBH, I think all the RHOA should feel like welfare receipients! Sheri and NeNe don’t even own thie homes. RHOBH are disgustly rich and still they are the real deal. NeNe is still walking arounf with a tire Gucci bag from many years ago. Sheri borrowed a Birken bag. Sheri can’t afford a $10,000 bag. She couldn’t keep up her mortgage payments. ompare the RHOBH homes to RHOA and they (RHOA) look like upscale homeless shelters!
