First VH1 scripted show ‘Single Ladies’ to be shot in Atlanta

First announced as a movie in May, “Single Ladies” will become VH1’s first scripted drama series, set to debut in July, 2011.

Better yet, it’s going to be shot in Atlanta next spring. The film was shot over the summer and is set to air before the series starts.

Executive produced by Queen Latifah (who will guest star), the series is about three best friends with different points of views on sex and relationships.

stacey-dashThe press release provides a synopsis:

Val ( Stacey Dash-right) is an ambitious aspiring fashion mogul who wants to find a true partner. Keisha (LisaRaye McCoy), on the other hand, is a former video dancer just looking for a rich man to keep her in style. April (Charity Shea) has supposedly found the perfect man and the perfect marriage – but is learning that marriage isn’t necessarily a happy ending. Single Ladies is a modern, sexy series set in the world of Atlanta fashion, music, and celebrity that will constantly explore which woman has the right approach to relationships.

In the same press release, Jeff Olde, EVP of VH1’s original programming department said “their complex lives and loves play out against a super hip Atlanta backdrop which is sure to be a character in the movie… Once we saw an early cut of the movie we knew right away we needed to make this a series.”

Wonderful! I welcome any opportunity for our great city to be portrayed nationally in a positive light…I just hope this new show does that. Being produced by Queen Latifah, I expect the portrayal of young, beautiful, successful black women to be truly representative of that sector of the population of Atlanta.

So Lisa Raye will be playing herself. The writers just replayed D-list actress to video dancer.

I remember when VH1 played music. Of course I also remember when MTV played music, and had VJs: Alan Hunter, Martha Quinn, Mark Goodman, J.J. Jackson, and Nina Blackwood. So…I guess I remember when both MTV and VH1 jumped the shark. Oh well.

I guess we should be relieved that none of the “Real Housewives of Atlanta” made the cut for the roles.

I wonder if Lisa tried out for a part? Sheree probably did since she is now an “actress”.
