V-103 wins national urban station of the year award

v103_logoV-103 Thursday night won urban station of the year at the National Association of Broadcasters’ Marconi Radio Awards in D.C.

The Marconi awards are considered a top honor for a radio station.

V-103 has been a top-rated R&B/hip-hop station in Atlanta for many years under the eye of Rick Caffey. It has built up a dominant on-air staff, including veterans Frank Ski and Wanda Smith in the morning, Ryan Cameron and Rashan Ali in the afternoons and Greg Street in the evenings.

The station, which remains No. 1 in Atlanta despite a recent slip in ratings, currently has two slots open: mid days and late nights.

Reggie Rouse, the program director, said the station was excited to win the award but has no plans to “rest on our laurels.” He said V-103’s successful formula has been melding service and community with great personalities and music.

This is the first time in a decade V-103 has taken home this award. The station won five times between 1990 and 2000.

Well, congrats V-103. I can’t stand to listen to your station myself, but that won’t stop me from recognizing that you serve your listeners better than anyone else. Keep up the good work.

Playing degrading music about drug selling and having sex makes them #1? Fitting for these times and this town. A garbage station making their listeners dumb and celebrating bad music.

A joke at the least. Get Real.

I agree. Besides Ryan Cameron and Osei, the rest of the staff suck! I travel extensively and that is probably one of the worse programming jobs ever. They have a 25 song playlist. You will only hear 25 songs on that station! That is horrible when people have to listen 8-10 hours while at work and in the car. You can’t really blame it on the jocks. It’s the programming. At least Ryan makes it funny during the boring song choices and Osei willmake it sexy. Please fire Wanda, Frank, and Rashaan! Put Elle back with Ryan and move them to the mornings. Leave Osei 10-2, get ole girl back at 2-6 and leave Greg at 6-10pm. Hire someone like Brian McKnight or someone who has a slow syndicated sgow to do overnights. That’s a good line up. Send my check please.

@ Candi: You don’t HAVE to listen 8-10 hours while at work and in your car. Change the station! You people kill me acting like V-103 or any other station owes you something. They appeal to the masses, whether that includes you or not. If you don’t like the 25 songs that they continuously play, don’t listen? If enough people stop listening, they’ll be forced to change their lineup. But that probably won’t happen because there are clearly more people who like what they’re playing than not. These blog always seem to attract the haters so the opinion seems skewed.

Well deserved! V-103 reminds me of the old WPGC in Washington DC, which is also owned by CBS as well. I hope they do eventually find a permanent replacement for both middays and late nights because it just doesn’t feel right listening to the Quiet Storm without a host. I do agree that Frank Ski is a blowhard, especially after listening to him during this Eddie Long situation, but the station is way more community oriented and well programmed urban in a large market.

@ Candi: They have more variety to their playlist compared to Kiss 104.1, Majic 97.5/107.5, and Hot 107.9 combined. If it wasn’t for V then those station would all worse than they already are. The only urban stations that are better programmed is WDKX in Rochester, NY, but it’s still community-owned and operated. I consider this station is a blessing considering it being corporate-owned.
