Enrique Iglesias’ comeback hit ‘I Like It’ is tops in Atlanta radio as the Groove narrows its playlist

Enrique_IglesiasEnriqueFrontalEnrique Iglesias has been off the pop culture radar screen for several years. His last hit on top 40 radio was in 2001 with “Escape.”

He’s now back with his No. 1 hit “I Like It,” which topples Mike Posner’s “Cooler Than Me” as the most played song on Atlanta radio. Posner was on top for a month.

And the Groove’s shift to sounding like the old 95.5/The Beat is virtually complete.

105.7/The Groove, which had a more oldies pop sound a few months ago but has become more and more of a “rhythmic top 40,” has increased its airplay of its top songs, from around 70 spins a week, or once every two hours and 24 minutes to a whopping 125 spins a week. That means once every 80 minutes. So if you listen to the station for eight straight hours, you’ll hear five particular songs six times each – or about one-quarter of the time.

The five big songs are “I Like It,” Taio Cruz’s “Dynamite,” Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie,” Usher’s “DJ’s Got Me Falling In Love Again” and B.o.B’s “Airplanes.”

I don’t think a station in Atlanta has ever played songs with such high frequency before though there are stations around the country that do so in markets such as Indianapolis, Denver and New York. Taio Cruz’s song, for instance, was played at least 120 times a week on 19 different stations nationwide  this past week, according to Mediabase 24/7.

Seven more songs are played on the Groove about 60 to 70 times a week, or once every hour and 30 minutes. So 12 songs now encompass about 50 percent of total playing time on the station.

In other words, the Groove is chasing listeners who plan to spend only a short time with the station. It wants to build “cume,” or total listeners at the expense of more loyal folks who like to keep a station on for long periods of time.

Its playlist now more closely aligns itself to that of the former Beat, which used to play its top songs 100 times a week before it ended its run on FM last month. The Groove’s recent adds also indicate a shift to a purer hip hop sound: Drake’s “Miss Me,” Jay-Z and T.I.’s “Swagga Like Us,” New Boyz’s “Break My Bank,” and Lil Wayne’s “Got Money” and “Lollipop.”

In fact, the Beat used to play maybe 130 different songs a week, by far the lowest in Atlanta. Now, it’s the Groove, which is down to 127 unique tunes this past week.

Among other stations, Q100 has added Cee-Lo’s “F*** You,” Will.i.am & Nicki Minaj’s “Check It Out” and Natasha Bedingfield’s “Strip Me” to its playlist. Star 94 has also added “Strip Me” over the past week. Dave FM added Florence & the Machine’s “Dog Days are Over.”

V-103 has added Nicki Minja’s “Right Thru Me” and has played Willow’s “Whip My Hair” a couple of times this week. Hot hasn’t added anything the past week but on Sept. 20 started playing Travis Porter’s “Make it Rain.”

Kicks has added one song in the past nine days: Tim McGraw’s “Felt Good On My Lips” on Sept. 20. Two days later, the Bull added the same song. It also added Lady Antebellum’s “Hello World” on Monday with Blake Shelton’s “Who Are You When I’m Not…”

A top five for True Oldies is sort of silly since no song is spun more than eight times in a given week. B98.5’s playlist almost never changes so its top 5 tends to be fairly static. Ditto with Kiss 104.1. Rock 100.5 and the River both play purely oldies and the top songs all tend to be clustered in the same area.

Was “The New 97.1 The River” too “new” to compile any data on? Sorry. Couldn’t help myself!

another station started off strong… is ending up like all the rest, repetition, corporate, and nothing new… Groove is groove less.. bring back the day when djs ran the radio stations!
