Dish Network customers lose FX, Fox Sports, NatGeo over rate dispute

Two of the three possible regular season final games for outgoing Braves manager Bobby Cox may be blacked out for Dish Network customers if a dispute over rates isn't resolved. CREDIT: Curtis Compton/ajc.com

If you’re a Dish Network customer and planning to watch two of the three final Atlanta Braves regularly scheduled season games this weekend, you may be out of luck.

News Corp.’s Fox is blocking Dish’s access to 19 Fox Sports channels, FX and the National Geographic Channel. The sticking point is rate increases. Dish said they are asking for transmission fee increase of more than 50 percent. Those increases are often passed on to customers in the form of higher monthly subscription rates.

In a press release today, Dish said, “Fox has flatly refused Dish Network’s request to allow customers to continue to watch these FOX channels during the negotiations.”

“Dish Network is not going to allow Fox or any programmer to bully our customers into paying such an unconscionable price increase,” said Dave Shull, senior vice president of Programming for Dish Network in the press release.

The University of Georgia football game on Saturday night versus the Colorado Buffaloes is set to air on Fox Sports South, which would be unavailable if this dispute continues.

But good news, Dawg fans: Dish has come up with a work around. It has made some channels available that most Atlanta subscribers don’t normally get, including FSN Rocky Mountain (9664) and CSN Mid-Atlantic (9667) . Those networks are airing the Georgia-Colorado game. (UPDATE: I hear this work-around did not end up happening. I’m checking with Dish to see if that was indeed the case.)

There, so far, appears to be no other option for the affected Braves games SportsSouth is scheduled to air the Braves-Phillies game tonight at 7:30 p.m. Fox Sports South is set to air the Sunday game, which could be manager Bobby Cox’s final game ever, at 1:30 p.m. (The Saturday game at 4 p.m. will air on WAGA-TV, which Dish Network customers will have access to whether this dispute is resolved or not.)

Fox has its own website about the situation at www.getwhatipaidfor.com where it also notes that the Fox broadcast network might be affected on November 1 in a separate dispute. There, Fox points to alternative options such as DirecTV, Comcast and AT&T U-Verse.

In a media statement today, Fox said, “The proposal we’ve offered Dish is fair and in line with the tremendous value we provide.   We regret the inconvenience to our viewers, but Dish has asserted its subscribers do not value our channels and has made a decision to go forward without them.”

This move affects Dish Network’s 14.3 million nationwide customers. (Dish does not reveal metro specific numbers.)

According to Scarborough Research covering February 2009 to January 2010, the Atlanta metro area has 1.5 million households that subscribe to cable, 527,700 households who use DirecTV and 320,400 households who have Dish.

This current dispute does not impact Fox News, the Fox broadcast network (WAGA) or Fox Business Channel.

The national Geographic channel has alot of decent programming.
I hope you folks will come to some sort of agreement on this issue.
I like dishnetwork with alot of good programming.
You folks can tell fox that greed is not an option, coming from a loyal consumer, who spends alot of money each month on programming.
Thank you,

Its all about money. First of all DISH requires you to sign up for an upgraded package in order to get FOX Sports (part of the standard package on COX cable) and now they will be unable to provide that service. Don’t think for a minute that they will lower your monthly bill or let you out of your contract with them. Can anyone spell Class Action law suit?

Ive been a DirecTV customer for 8 years. Even though DirecTV owns a portion of DISH, they are completely different. It has to be a monsoon for DirecTV to go out yet if it barely sprinkled when I had DISH, I would lose signal. U-Verse is idiotic as they put the “box” over half a mile away from my home and I can’t get it. Have to be under 3000′ for U-Verse, but the people I talk to who have it says it freezes up and pixulates like a bad sat. picture sometimes.

Don’t be mad at DISH though, it’s not them that’s causing the outage, it’s the network. DISH is fighting for the consumer so they won’t have to raise their rates and the network is not granting DISH access while they are still in negotiations.

I was at a cook out at my nieces house last weekend and had to miss the UGA game because they have dish and the game was not available on what they had. It was on an “upgrade” channel. You gotta be kidding me. I have also been places when the weather was bad and the channel was going in and out. Why does anybody have this crappy service? I don’t get it. I will keep my cable, thank you.

All you bozos who shout cable and U-Verse: Not everybody lives where there is cable. There are a whole bunch of us who live outside the area served. This action is violation of contract by Dish. I just got signed up a couple of months ago and the service is fine. Major reasons for signing were saving money by bundling with my phone and Internet and to see college football. I am also a huge Braves fan and have enjoyed watching them again after not having any kind of live TV for nearly five years. But hey, this is not the end of the world. Take that time you would have been watching and serve the Lord by being a blessing to others.

Just chatted with Dish.. we will be able to watch the Georgia/Colorado game on 9664 or 9667. 9667 is the Comcast regional sports network and 9664 is Fox Sports Rocky Mountain, which is not owned by Newscorp and therefore not affected by this issue. It is also showing up on channel 444 HDALT… and chat claimed that i’d be able to watch the game in HD on 444 if it was being broadcast in HD.. but the Miss St. game was not in HD so who knows… The braves are a different story.. no such luck there!

Everyone is slowing moving away from cable anyways. Cable companies continue to charge outrageous prices so most people can watch television for a couple hours a day and on the weekends. This is just the beginning folks. 25% or more of the population will turn off their cable in the next five years. Quit blaming this thing on the Fox Network. They have the right to charge whatever they see fit for their network feed. The problem is with Dish Network. They’re the ones who refuse to pay for the feed, only because they don’t like the rate increase. Then Charlie Ergen (CEO Dish Network) broadcasts his own feed on the Fox channel telling his customers he’s just doing this to save them from a rate increase. I have a contract with Dish as do most of their customers. They can’t raise my rates. I can leave Dish when my contract expires and pay no rate increase. Don’t *iss on my leg and tell me it’s raining Charlie. Meanwhile, Dish has dropped a channel from the programming package that I’ve purchased only after I signed the contract. How about I pay Dish a portion in Dollars and substitute the remainder with Pesos. If they can change the agreement after the fact why can’t I?

Nowhere on the Fox site is there a place to contact them about this issue and express your displeasure with Fox in this whole ordeal. There is a convenient link to contact Dish about it, but not Fox. Seems to me Fox is more interested in waging a PR war, not offer programming to paying customers. For the record, both companies are pricks who could care less about customers. I just want to be able to contact both of them and I would hope Braves fans and UGA fans would inundate both of these horrible companies about this issue.

two questions:
1. Why is there not a TV provider where the customer chooses what channels they get in a “a la carte” style delivery?
2. Why do we pay for channels that we have absolutely no intentions to watch? (and would be happy to not receive)

If the TV providers (comcast, Dish, DirectTV…) do nothing but pass the increases on to the customers, why not give the customers the choice on receiving the channel? Answer: because it is a monopoly that the government (FCC) allows to happen. By tiering the channels, the FCC turns it head while TV providers rake in much more money than they should because the consumers have no true choice.

The whole industry is crooked.

I had Comcast and kept having problems with the box, so I called ATT about U-verse. It sounded great. I also had regular ATT telephone and ATT DSL. They came out and checked out every thing and said I could get U verse, so I did. They installed, had it for two days and started having outages. They sent a tech out who said I was to far away from the box and they should have never installed. Tried to switch back to regular ATT broadband and they said my area was over serviced and I couldnt go back. The worst customer service I have ever had with any company in my life!!! Ordered Direct TV, installed the next day, looks great, and cheaper. Also much better customer service.

Some customers have no choice but to have Dish Network – I personally have been with Dish for over 10 years and love it, disputes like this have come up in the past, but have always been resolved with no action needed on part of the customers. I have DTV in one cabin I own in the mountains, and Dish in another cabin.(these are vacation rentals)
1. Dish had horrible customer service–3 no shows for installation. So I put in DTV in the first cabin.
2. I installed Dish in the second because of ‘bundled’ pricing with the local phone company.

After using both, I like Dish better (more chanels that I want to watch for less $$). I was waiting until my contract ran out with DTV to switch that location to Dish also. BUT—I will rethink that unless this is resolved. I’ll change the Dish location to DTV also.

I’ve had Dish for the past few years, and really have enjoyed the service. What I don’t understand is they get into these p*ssing matches with networks (eg, MLB Network, Fox, ABC/ESPN) and the only ones that suffer are the customer.

I’ve seen my bill increase, and channels decrease. They claim to have these fights so they don’t have to increase the monthly charges, yet they still increase them.

The similar setup/channel lineup to what I have costs the same with DirectTV and Comcast, yet they offer those channels that I lose with Dish.

Comcast’s service was dreadful in my neighborhood when I first moved in, even though the neighborhood was a new install. (Constant drops, blockiness, etc) I may have to revist them, or go DirectTV. (Sadly, ATT U-Verse isn’t in my area yet, or else I would have already switched)

Had Dish and comcast. Dish price was nice but like everyone said it goes out if the wind blows hard or really cloudy outside. But the f$$kers you got to watch for is comcast. They will over charge you when they get a chance. After promotion was over my rate went up to $293 for one month. Are you kidding me for cable ( hbo, Showtime and fox soccer channel) and they didn’t notify me at all on my bill or anything the just hit me with the $300 bill. Comcast is about getting new customers and treating the old ones like sh@t. I’m getting DirectTV Monday and hopefully it’s better than dish and comcast

Gary Miller

Great News

DISH Loses Fox, MSG Programming

According to DISH, Fox has requested a rate increase of “more then 50 percent” and have refused their request to keep the stations on during negotiations.

Well from the consumer prospective I say GREAT for DISH – they should never need to pay more then a 1 or 2 percent increase (if that much) for any programming during a renewal. Granted I will miss my National Geographic, but I will survive, as for the sports programming “there is only so much sports I can watch and losing the FOX channels will not affect me in the least – hopefully I will also lose FOX News (What a joke).”

For those companies that own the programs, you need to understand many consumers are getting greatly unhappy with the constant increases in prices for getting their entertainment. Most of which can be attributed to you. Program owners need to remember the Golden Rule “You need the consumer”, otherwise when you sell advertising for your programs you are not going to be able to charge very much with no one watching. I assume the loss of income would also not make your shareholders happy.

Consumers need to remember, without us “the consumers” program owners have nothing. As it is we are paying for a show that has already been paid for with advertising dollars, giving the program owner additional income. That is fine within reason, but the owners need to be looking at increasing the advertising dollars – which will of course increase with the increase in the number of people who watch the show, therefore they should be ATTEMPTING to keep costs to the consumer as low as possible to gain more viewers and drive up advertising pricing.

On a related note:

Advertisers are your rates going down since millions of views can no longer view your advertising? You need to step in and make sure you are not overpaying for viewers that can no longer view your advertising. Are you getting a refund from FOX for your advertising? I doubt it.

Again Great move on DISH’S part, however will this also lower my monthly payment to DISH? I doubt it; however DISH as an entertainment operator needs to remember to take care of its customers on both sides of these issues when they occur.

Renewals like this need to become MUCH MORE PUBLIC as it is the consumer that ultimately suffers regardless of the outcome. As a consumer I want to know what FOX is getting for “allowing its programs to be viewed by me”!

I have Dish Network and block all shopping and religious channels on my remote. I am not anti-religious, but I prefer to GO TO church rather than watch it on TV. This is just my choice. Regarding the current problem between Fox and Dish Network, they are both dissing Bobby Cox. This is his last season and the Braves are on a run to the playoffs. The fans in the Atlanta area are not happy with either Dish Network or News Corp (Fox) for not showing the games of 10/1/2010 and/or 10/3/2010. There will probably be repercussions for both of these companies.

What is going on????? Do I hear: breach of contract???? Do we have a lawyer in the house??? Sign me up for a class action law suit against DISH NET……….What 50% increase????? does this mean what we pay for sports package alone……this would only be $3.50 for me! Apparently these companies don’t respect us “the consumers”…..we do have choices….right?

Had to listen to the Braves game on radio in the ATL metro area. Seemed like the old days when I listened to the Pirates on KDKA radio in the Pittsburgh area years ago. Not so bad , except the Braves lost 11 to 5. Hope the idiots at Fox and Dish come to terms.

Dish reps will cancel you in a heartbeat. It’s not their fault and there isn’t anything you can do by calling and whining. If you dont want it to go away, and you don’t want to pay more, call Fox. Every other provider is up for negotiation or contract renewal in the next 6 months and you can bet they’ll drop Fox in a heartbeat too. Go ahead and sign an agreement with them, and then be stuck in it without anything.

Also, if I hear breach of contract one more time someone’s getting hurt. You sign a contract in a providers favor, and agree that you’ll commit to service even when “pricing and programming are subject to change,” and then you whine when it actually changes!

Read a book.

Ok, lets sit back for a second and look at this problem. Fox wants a 50% increase in fees, Dish says that’s to much and we don’t want to pass this on to our customers. Strike 1 Fox. Dish is working to provide other channels so we can still watch the shows we enjoy, Fox just pulls the plug and don’t care about us. Strike 2 Fox. Fox puts up website bashing Dish, promoting other providers. But still leaves us in the dark. Dish says leave the programming on and offered Fox a double digit increase. Not good enough for greedy Fox. they just turned us off. Strike 3 Fox. I just want to thank Fox Sports for showing their real colors and how much they care about the customer.

It is amazing that the “negotiations” were not completed before football season. You have to wonder if Dish intentionally stalled the process so that customers would put pressure on FOX. I was just wondering about this statement put out by fox “As of November 1, Dish’s position could also keep you from watching FOX’s coverage of key final match ups from the NFL regular season and the NFL Playoffs, MLB World Series, Glee, The Simpsons, Family Guy, House and other exciting FOX programming, including several new series and season premieres”. Really fox? these are local over the air channels that anyone can get they are also protected by the government and not any satellite or cable company has any control over them. This is just another tactic that fox is using to try and strong arm Dish Network into paying outrageous fees which in turn get passed on to the consumer. As a consumer I applaud Dish for sticking up for my wallet and not charging me more for a few channels.

I pay $130/mo for DISH and this is not the first time we’ve lost channels. The last time, it was the local network block and it was gone for months. No price adjustments from DISH. While I love having satellite, I could easily drop pay t.v. and go back to my antenna, and watch on demand episodes on my computer from the networks. But they’ll probably be the next ones to start charging an arm and a leg. It’s all about greed and the bottom line. And we are stupid enough to pay for it, like bottled water.

Just to let everyone know, I heard that someone stating that if you decide to leave Dish, and they try to make you pay a cancellation charge or some other B.S Charge, you can just tell them they broke a contract with you, and you will not pay and will fight it, because when you signed up, Dish offered you those same channels they now are not providing. Kudos to Dish Network!!! Their standing up for there customers,to keep their prices down.I’ve worked in the satellite business for twenty years and they are the only thats ever cared squat about what they charge there customers or customer service in general. The same thing happened about six or so years ago with ViaComm and DishNetwork.Dish turned all there channels off and end the end three or four weeks later the disput was settled and the customers won!End the end Dish lost 10,000 subscriber and life went on.Oh by the way “I’m currantly working for the other side”

Record a live game t o view later? OMG! Lol save your software bucks and invest in the real thing AND on top of that, use your software… Wow! and Joe- if what you are stating is true, all the more reason to switch, right? Folks, If you look it up Direct TV is part/majority owned by News Corp (Fox) and Liberty Media (who also owns the Braves….This is all part of the rate dispute for selected Fox Channels with the other Channels due up in the next few months….Part of the problem with “broadcasters” also owning the “delivery” services (SAT, Cable etc).

Brian

Right On Ken, charge extra for the mexican channels to cover any increase Fox Corps. wants to charge! And it’s not Dish Networks fault about this whole thing….it’s Fox Corps. that wants to increase the cost of their network by 50% and although it’s probably only going to reflect a $1 increase in our Dish Network bill, I am happy they are fighting Fox on the increase! Hey, it’s FOX that is taking our FX, Sports Channels, NatGeo off while they are negotiating, not Dish Network. If FOX was decent in any way, they’d leave all the channels on while negotiations are in progress.
And to ” bornloser”…boy, that name fits you perfectly…..Not everyone can get cable you frickin’ idiot…that’s why we get satellite service.

Now I think they should have to let us out of the contract without fees so I can go back to Direct TV! I know, I know…dream on and write the check! It’s just not fair at all! Netflix, Hulu and the hundreds of streaming sites and torrents/newsgroups along with google TV have made me realize I’m wasting money just so companies can play games to get more out of us all.
Dish will end up giving the “we tried, blah blah blah but we will have to raise our rates to get the content our customers want, blah blah blah” speech hoping people don’t realize fox owns part of Dish.

The Dish Network shouldn’t make this an inconvenience for the customer! We pay for these channels and there should have been a notice in my latest bill about these changes so I could have been forewarned. I will not go without NATGEO because someone has an issue with price. I understand why but we, the customer, should have a choice if we want to pay extra or not. Well it goes to say that I don’t know what the HELL I’m gonna do! At one point I just want the dang thing to come up and I don’t care what the cost is, but the other is that WTF?!?!??!?! Don’t Fox & all them other stations generate MILLIONS or BILLIONS of dollars? Now they gotta take more money from people even through a recession?!?!?!??! WTF is this world coming to!!!!

Well I just read the Fox side of the story and they said it is Dish Network who is the greedy party. I suppose you can say both sides are at fault. Fox says Dish is charging for local programming and that their profits [dish] for 2009 was over 2 Billion dollars and they are 25% over that figure so far this year. Although I am not fond of Fox’s political views I do think both sides is to blame. I know dish raised their rates for no other reason than greed and i think fox has a right to want some of that profit. You notice that there is no problem YET with the other satellite companies and broadcasters

fx wants more money then they should work harder and offer more all they show is reruns. it is fox responsibilties to pay thier taxes not the customers. fox all they do sit on thier asses so where is the justification for the increase

I bought the package I have specifically for FX !!! Think this is a good reason to break my contract if I have to and go to direct ! And the trouble is it is right in the middle of one of my favorite series….Sons of Anarchy !! Not pleased !

I’m not surprised that Fox would pull a stunt like this. Way to make freinds! I love Son’s and was pissed it wasn’t on last night. Please get this dispute straightened out.

Sons was good last night..thanks to Directtv. If you read the newsletter sent out by Directtv you will see that they are only asking for a small increase. Less than $2 per customer. You idiots that have Dish should be mad that Dish charges for local channels..they are free on Directtv..I had Dish and made the switch and all of you should to and then the $2 BILLION dollar profit that Dish is going to post this year will go down a little bit.

bornloser you are the moron for even posting a comment like that. Most people that have dish or direct go that route due to the fact that they do not have cable as an option. The cable tv in our area carries 35 channels of wich 20 of them are such poor quality they are unwatchable.

Recently we have have Disney HD’s removed. We have lost FX, Fox sports and Nat Geo. We pay for the largest package to make sure we’ll get certain channels and we aren’t happy when we lose them. Fox is not to blame for this. They own the network, Charlie is leasing it, a business move for all the networks. Charlie makes money on these networks that don’t belong to him, he in turn leases them to millions of us. Charlie (dish) is making billions each year in profit and he can certainly afford a small increase to keep his customers happy. Another fact, Fox is not asking for a 50% increase. DISH Network lost approximately 19000 subscribers during the quarter ended June 30, 2010 and I predict a much larger loss from this mess. Direct TV is making deals for those Dish customers with contracts. If Charlie were half as smart as he thinks he is he’d settle this quickly instead of putting his head in the sand hoping Fox will back down.

Has anyone called Dish Network and asked to cancel their 2 year contract because FX is no longer
available? It will be interesting to see if it can be done.

While reading all the nergative commenst I have yet to find recommendation for a solution… I’m a big fan or Sons of Anarchy. The banner at the bottom of my tv screen suggested calllng an 800 #, but the number listed lookied like it was short a digit…….So how do we approach this to get some action???

I’m ticked off. I always watch FX and not for sports. Also, NatGeo is one of my favorite channels. I’ll be looking at cable.

Hold your ground Dish. I’m a huge sports fan, but Fox is not near as important as they think they are! I’d rather listen to the games on the radio before I will allow Fox to extort a 50% increase out of me! Fox will not be the first company to cut off their nose to spite thier face in this economy! Thanks Dish for sticking up for your customers!

well im from Cali and ive tried almost all except comcast i ride the prices they all go up and down right now i got dish and its great, picture is third place with u Verse and verizon at first but their pricing SUCKS!! and they have some technical issues to fix, the worst ones are direct tv and time warner which are the same low picture quality, im going to miss net geo though
