Dish Network customers lose FX, Fox Sports, NatGeo over rate dispute

If you’re a Dish Network customer and planning to watch two of the three final Atlanta Braves regularly scheduled season games this weekend, you may be out of luck.

News Corp.’s Fox is blocking Dish’s access to 19 Fox Sports channels, FX and the National Geographic Channel. The sticking point is rate increases. Dish said they are asking for transmission fee increase of more than 50 percent. Those increases are often passed on to customers in the form of higher monthly subscription rates.

In a press release today, Dish said, “Fox has flatly refused Dish Network’s request to allow customers to continue to watch these FOX channels during the negotiations.”

“Dish Network is not going to allow Fox or any programmer to bully our customers into paying such an unconscionable price increase,” said Dave Shull, senior vice president of Programming for Dish Network in the press release.

The University of Georgia football game on Saturday night versus the Colorado Buffaloes is set to air on Fox Sports South, which would be unavailable if this dispute continues.

But good news, Dawg fans: Dish has come up with a work around. It has made some channels available that most Atlanta subscribers don’t normally get, including FSN Rocky Mountain (9664) and CSN Mid-Atlantic (9667) . Those networks are airing the Georgia-Colorado game. (UPDATE: I hear this work-around did not end up happening. I’m checking with Dish to see if that was indeed the case.)

There, so far, appears to be no other option for the affected Braves games SportsSouth is scheduled to air the Braves-Phillies game tonight at 7:30 p.m. Fox Sports South is set to air the Sunday game, which could be manager Bobby Cox’s final game ever, at 1:30 p.m. (The Saturday game at 4 p.m. will air on WAGA-TV, which Dish Network customers will have access to whether this dispute is resolved or not.)

Fox has its own website about the situation at www.getwhatipaidfor.com where it also notes that the Fox broadcast network might be affected on November 1 in a separate dispute. There, Fox points to alternative options such as DirecTV, Comcast and AT&T U-Verse.

In a media statement today, Fox said, “The proposal we’ve offered Dish is fair and in line with the tremendous value we provide.   We regret the inconvenience to our viewers, but Dish has asserted its subscribers do not value our channels and has made a decision to go forward without them.”

This move affects Dish Network’s 14.3 million nationwide customers. (Dish does not reveal metro specific numbers.)

According to Scarborough Research covering February 2009 to January 2010, the Atlanta metro area has 1.5 million households that subscribe to cable, 527,700 households who use DirecTV and 320,400 households who have Dish.

This current dispute does not impact Fox News, the Fox broadcast network (WAGA) or Fox Business Channel.

Dish ain’t “holding the line” on rates – they just increased their receiver fees.

My main beef is the stupid packaging. Why do I pay monthly fees for home shopping channels, Hispanic channels, and so forth that I will never watch? (As we all know, the entire pay TV industry works this way.) Bring on ala carte ordering!!!

Randy, the Georgia/Colorado game is listed on the info screen for channel 9667 in the 7pm time slot for Saturday, and as of right now the channel is unlocked. Hopefully, it stays that way. Too bad about the Braves though. Maybe ESPN will pick up Sunday’s game.

whm: No problem at all!

srf: I don’t see any Philadelphia area channels in the package that Dish added. That would have been the easiest solution though.

Just chatted with Dish.. we will be able to watch the Georgia/Colorado game on 9664 or 9667. 9667 is the Comcast regional sports network and 9664 is Fox Sports Rocky Mountain, which is not owned by Newscorp and therefore not affected by this issue. It is also showing up on channel 444 HDALT… and chat claimed that i’d be able to watch the game in HD on 444 if it was being broadcast in HD.. but the Miss St. game was not in HD so who knows… The braves are a different story.. no such luck there!

Everyone is slowing moving away from cable anyways. Cable companies continue to charge outrageous prices so most people can watch television for a couple hours a day and on the weekends. This is just the beginning folks. 25% or more of the population will turn off their cable in the next five years. If your within the metro area buy an antenna, continue to get HD local channels and stream the rest.

Today on the show we break down the compelling matchups in the Northern Illinois at Akron game on saturday, and chernoff will talk fast and stumble over his words.

Thom, DirecTV doesn’t own any portion of Dish Network whatsoever. Up until the split of Echostar and Dish Network, it was a much larger corporation than DirecTV.

I am a Dish customer and I think the selection of channels sucks because it is so manipulated to get you to buy the bigger selection packages. I understand marketing, but I think it’s a rip-off. Especially when the HD channels don’t work about a third of the time. Direct is looking better all the time!

Why would anyone subscribe to Dish?? According to the latest lawsuit they have screwed all their customers.

They might be cheaper but they don’t offer close to the programming of Direct. And they sure don’t offer much sports programming. If you want to watch sports…..you won’t be watching it on Dish cuz it’s not offered.

I have at quarter-inch thick file of correspondence with DISH (before I jettisoned them) on my problems with Dish Network Satellite TV. They have got to be the Gold Standard in Dumb-Ass Customer Service! I had them for over 8 years and finally could not stand it any longer. 7 rate increases in 43 months (avg: 1 every 6.1 months). Their Customer (DIS)Service is by far the worse I’ve ever encountered.
Direct TV is not much better, however, it IS better.
Anybody still on cable TV needs to try satellite TV.

According to fox website if this issue isn’t resolved by November 1st then we lose Fox WAGA channel 5. That would mean all NFC NFL games and of course all Falcon games. Luckily I have options since my Dish contract expires in November. Already looking into U-Verse packages.

Dish and Direct had better watch out…consumers are always looking for way to cut cost we may just begin streaming our TV shows through Hulu and other sources..it’s free..we’re already paying out the wazoo for DSL so why should we keep paying for cable providers when we can get it for free..except for local news and live games but college games stream live via ESPN360.com..

I’m a current Dish customer and subscribe to the expanded sports package, mostly for the Southern Conference FB games on SportsSouth. I hope they work this out soon but I see this mostly as a Fox issue, trying to raise revenues during a bad economy. My favorite show is Sons of Anarchy on FX and will just download it from a torrent site if need be.

If you think cable is going away, you are dead wrong. Satellite can’t compete with fiber on internet speeds, and people will continue to take the flaws with cable in return for 20mb/sec download speeds so they can watch all that on-demand and streaming content that keeps growing. I haven’t missed a Braves game or a UGA football game in 15 years of having Comcast, and I’ve never had more than the minimum level of service. Why would I want to pay $100 or more a month for 300+ channels when I only watch about 15 of them????

Kevin

The scumbags at DISH ought to absorb the cost during negotiations, instead of pointing a finger of blame back at FOX. This is the definition of lousy customer service.

I fired DISH network over a lousy $5 late fee, and had to pay them $15 to turn their box. Their programming sucks any ways. Why pay for 150 channels of crap when I can get ~12 channels of crap broadcasted to me for free?

I’ll never go back.

Start stuffing the DISH network reply envelope’s you get in the mail with their stupid offers with as much junk mail as they can hold. I doubt they get the message but at least it’s a little sweet private revenge.

BTW, Directv sucks too. Oh yeah, Commie-Cast sucks too.

It’s just like the grand ole FOX republicans…….trying to create it’s on stimulus funds with outrageous rate increases. Here’s what I’m wondering. Are the cable companies and Direc TV agreeing to the price increase from FOX? If so then I applaud DISH for standing firm on not implimenting this increase. The anger needs to be directed to the FOX offices as they are the ones who are causing this.
