It’s been nearly a year since we watched Sheree Whitfield pull Kim Zolciak’s weave, Nene Leakes and Kim battle over an alleged choking incident and Kim sing her way onto the dance charts with “Tardy for the Party.” Ahh… the memories!
But the women many people love to hate are back for a third season of “Real Housewives of Atlanta,” starting October 4 on Bravo. Lisa Wu Hartwell is no longer a regular cast member and will be reduced to cameo appearances.
Two newbies are coming aboard: model Cynthia Bailey and lawyer Phaedra Parks. For folks who complain the show lacks housewives, the married Hartwell is replaced by Parks, who is also married. Cynthia recently got married. Sheree and Kim are not married and there are no signs either are going to be stepping down the aisle anytime soon.
Bravo sent a preview of the first episode. Without giving away too much, here are some notable observations:
- Sheree’s hair is far thicker than it was last season. She’s no longer working on her fashion line, which I hear died on the runway. Instead, she’s now learning how to act, her “new-found passion.” “I can picture myself on stage receiving an Oscar one day,” she said, with total sincerity.
- The producers like to frequently blur out paintings, which is oddly distracting.
- Kim’s lesbian affair is a classy topic of discussion. “Chaos and drama,” Kim complains, while courting the chaos and drama. Big Poppa? Hard to say what’s going on there. She looks like she has lost some weight and has a better-looking wig on her head.
- Kim and NeNe may or may not reconcile for the 75th time.
- Kim’s mothering skills are in full display. “I hope I instilled the same morals and values my parents did in me,” she said with a straight face. One bit of advice to her 13-year-old daughter: “Don’t chase boys.” Later, she tells the camera, “I remember how wild I was, but hey, I turned out well.”
- Dwight Eubanks, who might be angling for more camera time, is allegedly spreading rumors that don’t please everyone in the gang. And as Bravo trailers have shown, the two aren’t exactly buddy buddy at this point.
- Those trailers also show NeNe having issues with her husband Greg, who isn’t working much lately while NeNe pays the bills with her fame.
- A very pregnant Phaedra shows up partway through the episode as Dwight’s attorney. (She has repped Bobby Brown in the past.) “I’m a Southern belle from Athens, Georgia,” she said on the show. “Southern women have a certain type of charm, a gracefulness women in other parts of the world don’t have.” Her husband Apollo is younger than her. “If people aren’t talking about you, you aren’t relevant,” she noted, embodying the RHOA philosophy.
- Kandi, still recovering from A.J.’s death last fall, has dumped the music she was working on last year and has started over. She is gingerly dating again.
- Model Cynthia Bailey is not formally introduced in the first episode.
Bravo did provide episode descriptions for the next two episodes. Cynthia apparently is connected to NeNe and both attend the Dogwood Festival in the October 11 episode. Presumably, that’s her first official appearance on the show. Later, Kandi goes to Cynthia’s nightclub Uptown Restaurant and Lounge to test out new material for her album.
In the October 18 episode, Kandi helps Kim out as Kim gets ready to perform her one new song at a gay circuit party. NeNe’s son Brice’s previously reported problems with the law are addressed, too.

Stop the insanity. This constant aggrandizing of reality tripe like the Real Housewives of anything is a waste of bandwidth.

Would it be too much to ask that the RHOA actually had professional DEGREED women of substance who actually have a 9-5 that consist of something other than hair, makeup, singing or fashion. There are thousands of hardworking, intelligent, professional, degreed women in Atlanta. I only wish BRAVO would find a few for RHOA. This show sends terrible sterotypes to our kids. Most people still need an education and lots of hard work to make it, unlike most of the past crews of RHOA.

Why would someone want to watch a show about normal everyday life? You would make a better argument in asking that everyone turn off the televisions and try to make their own lives more entertaining.

I can tell you – this is the most embarrassing show portraying ‘Atlanta’.
I refuse to watch. It no more reflects Atlanta Housewives than pigs in mud – although that resembles this show!!!!

Sheree has delusions of grandeur. First to be a successful actress you have to be liked. No one…I mean no one likes you. The show is entertaining, but in a “what not to do” way. Comic relief and head shaking laughs is all I get from it. None of this crap is real.

I would much rather have a glimpse at the inside real world life of a strong, hardworking, well educated, self-made, not sponsored, real women in Atlanta. I, along with thousands of other successful women, exist in Atlanta. Why are we not portrayed in RHOA? Unfortunately, BRAVO choses to portray Atlanta women with a cast who can’t even speak english or do simple math or intelligently navigate their finances or pursue a sustainable career. The past RHOA, with the exception of Kandi, have very little to offer in the way of hard work, financial saviness, and a respectable, hard earned career. They are simply comic relief at the expense of real women in Atlanta. And, news flash, the economy is in the tank. Only idiots are still spending and charging like it’s raining $100’s. We need to teach our girls, and boys for that matter, to work hard, not hardly work and leech off whomever will sponsor your habits. I am appalled at the sheer ignorance, lack of a work ethic and the lack of financial knowledge of most, not all, but most, of the past RHOA cast. Every week we get a new dose of idiots bickering and fighting like little kids, and spending the money of their sponsors. Yes, it’s often funny but who’s laughing when most of these women are struggling in real life since they have little if any education, work ethics or financial sense.

OMG where did they drag up these lowlifes? Atlanta is full of smart, funny, talented, interesting and beautiful women. These women are not housewives and surely the franchise based in ATL presented their token minority group as representatives of here. Like being a primetime female anchor in Atlanta means minority only. At least we can be comforted that they are not putting overweight hicks without teeth, with multiple stretched tatoos, and obvious lack of diversity in the gene pool on as reps of our area. Kill this drivel already!

Must confess RHOA is my guilty pleasure. Wow! I’m excited about watching tv again. Khandi is normal and ghetto chic. Glad she’s dating now. Time to move on. Can’t wait to hear NeNe explain her ugly new NoNose. Glad they dumped Lisa, won’t miss her one bit. Bring Ed back if you must. Kim is such a HAM smoking and drinking like a fish. Did she take parenting classes during hiatus? Sheree the lesbian designer. What a joke. Perhaps I’ll run down to Goodwill to see whether her designs have hit the racks. The new housewives are supposedly educated and sophisticated. (Boooorriiiing) Cynthia and Phaedra. A model and a lawyer. Hmm, wonder if they’ll fit in with the characters we’ve come to love.
I am willing to give them a chance on one condition–bring drama to the max!

I agree dcgal. Watching thousands of Eddie Long’s parishioners show up at his church on Sunday in support of this scam artist was unbelievable. I sat there with my mouth open, watching these people jump up and down, screaming, throwing their hands in the air, as though he was a rock star. I have no idea whether he’s guilty of sexual misconduct or not, but the fact that he used his congregation’s financial support to buy these boys homes, vacations, jewelry, etc., should be reason enough to no longer support this man. I found it very interesting that he never denied the allegations, and never said he didn’t do what they’re accusing him of. All he said was that he was going to fight the charges. My guess is he didn’t deny the allegations, because he knows they’ve got enough evidence to nail him. It won’t matter though, because his scam is to prey on people who obviously aren’t the brightest people in the world, who blindly follow anything he tells them. They estimated he takes in 3 million dollars a year. How can people not see that he’s a rip-off artist. Watching these mega-rich evangelists makes me so proud to be agnostic. If people really want to do something positive with their money, how about sending donations to the Cancer Society, The American Heart Assn., or the Humane Society, to name a few. These poor, under-educated people believe that if they send Long, and the rest of his ilk, money, they will somehow have this place in God’s kingdom when they die. Believe me, if there is a God, Eddie Long would be the last person he would want teaching his message.

I also love that all these “ministers” in Atlanta refer to themselves as “Bishop”, “Apostle”, or my favorite, “Doctor”, even though they have no formal education. There are actual websites where you can buy a fake doctorate for $150.00. If you haven’t seen “Religulous” by Bill Maher, I highly recommend it. It really sheds light on this southern religious phenomenon.

These housewives shows do their best to stereotype the area they film from. The Orange county housewives are all white, with blonde hair and fake boobs.
The New Jersey housewives are all Italian, dark hair, and loud.
The Atlanta housewives are all black, loud, with bad weaves.
Bravo should be ashamed of themselves for going with the stereotypes of these geographical areas.

Everyone should know that BRAVO picks its cast members for this franchise based upon the drama they can bring to the table, and not on class, money, or success. Now if they were to pick women that has real success in Atlanta, they would be too real and classy to bring in the ratings. Unfortunately in our society, having class also means boring in the television world.
