Top radio songs in Atlanta by decade

It’s Labor Day weekend. I’ve already proven my radio dorkiness with my weekly Atlanta radio airplay reports, courtesy of Mediabase 24/7.

When i come aroundHere’s even more dorkiness: which are the most popular songs by decade on Atlanta radio the past week? I decided to check the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s to see what songs have stood the test of time. Green Day’s “When I Come Around” tops the 1990s (right), Bryan Adams’ “Summer of ‘69″ is most heard from the 1980s, Aerosmith’s “Dream On” leads the 1970s and Rolling Stones’ “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” is most commonly heard from the 1960s.

Nationally, the top pre-2000 song is Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’ ” It ranked 7th in Atlanta. No surprise there given how that song has been revived by “The Sopranos” and “Glee.”

Observations: thanks to Rock 100.5 and 97.1/The River, the 1970s classic rock hits get more top spins than songs from the 1980s and 1990s.  In Atlanta, The Rolling Stones were spun 150 times this past week vs. The Beatles, who were spun 112 times (although more different Beatles tunes were played, thanks to True Oldies). And the two major country stations seem to really like Tim McGraw cuts from the 1990s.

This compilation did not include 99X at 97.9, which is not tracked by Mediabase 24/7. If it had, that might have boosted some 90s songs by the likes of Nirvana and Pearl Jam.

NOTE: Mediabase 24/7, the source of this information, only provides market-wide numbers for the past week, limiting my ability to use a larger sample over time. The market numbers reflect 16 radio stations in Atlanta (Dave, Star, Bull, Project, the River, B98.5, Q100, Rock 100.5, Kicks, Praise, V-103, Kiss, Groove, True Oldies, Majic, Hot)  and inexplicably excludes Fish 104.7  from the compilation. Stations with limited signals in metro Atlanta such as South 107, 99X at 97.9 and Legend 96.7 are also excluded.

Odd that the two greatest bands of the past forty years (Beatles & U2) don’t have more songs being played. Grass Roots? Thin Lizzy? Makes me glad for my ipod.

Summer of 69 being the tops of the 80’s is just damn embarrassing. Is there any way to retroactively fire all the djs from back then?

Further proof that “The NEW” 97.1 The River needs a much larger playlist. If the constant hype of them still being “NEW” after 4 years isn’t enough to make you change the dial, then the shallow playlist will certainly do it.

A flaw in the research… Perhaps it would have been more telling to talk to the folks at 99X since alternative ruled the airwaves during the 90’s. I bet Nirvana would have shown up.

I wish you had tapped into 106.7 for the oldies approach. They play a very interesting mix.

Stones more popular than The Beatles???

“I was country when country wasn’t cool”…….folks, Country Musics’ where it’s at (classic country music, anything after the mid eighties is just all glitz and marketing to young folks who don’t know what real country is)……it has stood the test of time. Rodney Ho, obviously you don’t listen to country. The only two songs on any of the lists that will live on and on and on are “Sweet Home Alabama” by Lynyrd Skynyrd and “Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville”. Take that, you poppers and rockers!!!!!!!

I am actually a country music fan. This was not an opinion piece. This was data from Mediabase 24/7, which tracks radio station airplay in town. It does not include some of the outlying country stations such as WNGC, South 107 or 92.5/The Bear. It only includes the Bull and Kicks.

True Oldies is included in the tracking. The Stones were played more often than the Beatles on Atlanta radio the past week. That’s how I was gauging popularity. And that’s because the River and Rock 100.5 play a lot of Stones songs, far more than the Beatles.

I know you’re joking but sadly, not a single Twisted Sister song was played on Atlanta radio the past week. But Project 9-6-1 did play “Cum on Feel the Noize” by Quiet Riot.

No Tempts, Four Tops, Supremes or Jackson 5 during the 60’s or 70’s???

The stations (esp. Kiss and True Oldies) that play those acts have much deeper playlists than those who play 70s rock (Rock and River). The Supremes were played 30 times with 15 different songs, all from True Oldies. No song was played more than five times (that being “Baby Love”) The Temptations were spun 41 times from 12 songs (Kiss, Majic and True Oldies). Four Tops? 32 times from 7 songs, all on True Oldies. Jackson 5? Six songs, 19 times (Kiss and True Oldies). I did the top 10s based on individual songs, not artists.

Ah, to return to those days of yesteryear and “Mac Berry’s Country Gold Saturday Night” on WKHX, Kicks 101.5. If they would bring Mac back or someone with his personna, I might start listening to 101.5 again, otherwise, probably not.

Radio stations don’t tap into their whole library of songs in a given week. They pick from a subset and often play the same song many times over a period of days, and many of the most popular songs of all time might not be in their repertoire over that period. So your entire test is flawed, and the list of top songs is meaningless. If you did it over a period of a year, it would have more validity.

Your diligence is pretty darned admirable … Take the rest of the day off, Rodney … Tell ‘em it’s a holiday. You’re way going the extra mile, bud ….

I can’t believe Fleetwood Mac wasn’t on this list. Every time I turn on the radio for an extended period I have to listen to three or four of their crappy songs or start roaming the dial.

Have to agree with the other posted on Thin Lizzy. That song is ok every once in a while, but that number of plays is probably contributing to many Raod Rage cases in the Baby Boomer generation. It just hurt the ears.

Sadly, I primarily listen to the River because Classic Country (60-80’s) just isn’t represented well in Atlanta or on XM. Thanks goodness for 931 on Comcast. I find it strange given it is still the biggest market in the States, but Atlanta has never been known for having a good music selection. I think there is one classic country station, but it must have all the power of two gerbils on a wheel because I hear more static on it than a 1970’s TV station after 3am.

Bryan Adams, no way. He wasn’t that hot when he was supposed to be.Too much good music from the 80’s to waste time with him. Some greats from the 70’s missing in action. Eagles, CS&N, ELO, Doobies, ect.

@Tom Mediabase doesn’t make it that easy to track marketwide numbers like that over an entire year. Best I could do is for a week. So I’m using the tools I’ve been given. And yes, a week is a small subset of sampling but it isn’t totally invalid in this situation given that most stations do tend to play the same songs week in and week out, especially oldies. Let’s take the monthly numbers of the most-played song on Rock 100.5 this year: Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Fortunate Son.”: 31 times in January, 30 in February, 32 in March, 24 in April, 23 in May, 24 in June, 24 in July and 28 in April, with three more spins so far this month. Pretty consistent though in a given week, it could vary from 6 to 8 spins.

Yes, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Led Zeppelin are represented. Over the past week, Lynyrd Skynyrd was spun 69 times with 10 different songs. Led Zeppelin was spun 125 times with 22 different songs.

True Oldies, owned by Citadel, plays a ton of variety: 986 songs in the past week alone.

I think Wes Anderson and Tarantino do a much better job of creating playlists via their movies compared to your typical radio station. I never had an idea that the Kinks catalog was so good until I saw Darjeeling Ltd. Or even that Stones song that is played inthe movie that you never hear on the radio. Glam rock of the 70s is criminally underplayed on radio. There are so many catchy tunes in that genre.
