CBS Atlanta adds 5 p.m. news, drops ‘The 700 Club.’

CBS Atlanta (WGCL-TV) is adding an extra hour of news on weekdays starting Monday, August 30 at 5 p.m.

But it also means Pat Robertson’s long-running “The 700 Club” is leaving the station’s 9 a.m. position. News director Steve Schwaid said he did not know where that program will end up. According to the WATL-TV schedule, the show is already airing a half-hour version at 9 a.m. there and will go to a full hour on Monday.

CBS Atlanta has been running “People’s Court” at 5 p.m., but that veteran court show will now move to the 9 a.m. slot.

Stephany Fisher and Kim Fettig will co-anchor the 5 p.m. show. Jaquitta Williams, who recently joined the station, co-hosts with Fisher at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Stations in this market have been aggressively adding more broadcast news in recent years. WAGA-TV has a relatively new 11 p.m. news program and an extra 9 a.m. “Good Day Xtra” show. All four local news stations recently added a 4:30 a.m. broadcast.

“There’s clearly a market for this,” Schwaid said. “Our continued goal is to increase our news footprint in the market.”

The station is the only one in town with a 4 p.m. show, so it will run local news continuously from 4 to 6:30 p.m. At 5 p.m. WAGA and WSB both air local news as well. WXIA-TV airs “Dr. Phil.” With “People’s Court,” WGCL would typically finish behind those three other stations among 25 to 54 year olds, with WSB on top, followed by WAGA, then WXIA.  WATL-TV with “Maury” would often beat “People’s Court” as well in that demo.

CBS Atlanta now will air about six hours a day of fresh news, matching WSB-TV and ahead of WXIA-TV. WAGA, with its 10 p.m. news and “Good Day Atlanta”/”Good Day Xtra” combo, has by far the most.

And how about Dagmar Midcap’s possible departure from the station later this year?

“We’ll talk another time,” Schwaid said.

Congrats! Another newscast no one will watch! Maybe WGCL will realize that shuffling talent and firing people doesn’t help the ratings. Consistent quality does. (Look it up, Meredithians)

Adding more time to a newscast no one watches? Makes total sense…

congratulations CBS atlanta. i like the 4 pm newscast. its a tight format with always a sky eye report on breaking developments at the top. the ‘tough questions’ segments are good TV, and have been copied by other stations. i hope dagmar stays, but cbsAtlanta will survive without her. i look forward to seeing how they present the 5 PM cast. that is all

Please drop the 700 club completely. We don’t need that type of homophobia on the air.

I agree with Sheeple. 700 Club should be relegated to the Christian broadcast channels. It obviously was low rated or they would not have dropped it. I do with WGCL could increase their news ratings. God knows their Better Mornings pulls in no better than 0.9 or less.

The 700 Club will be on WATL 36 @ 9:00 AM weekdays. I heard a commercial for the change on the radio.

Hope the rumors about Dagmar aren’t true. I’ll really miss seeing Dagmar’s midcaps each day. Although, I’m guessing my tennis elbow would finally get a chance to heal.

I’d rather watch WGCL’s 4 PM news than any more of Oprah’s feminist doggerel.

How long will it be until Pat Roberson predicts some kind of horrible tragedy for those cities that take his show off the air?

From a business perspective the 700 Club is a paid program, and a lucrative one. It’s a hard habit to break! WGCL should be congratulated for trying to grow their own audience with programming that may have far more value to the viewer. Also, in case it didn’t register with the Boo Birds, I suspect that this move may ADD news jobs at WGCL.

Heck, even the Christian channels should pull that hate-mongering jerk Robertson. It’s not news and they should stop pretendingn that they have anything close to unbiased reporting.

More Katie Brace please. Solid reporter owed some time at the anchor desk.

Fresh LOCAL news from 4p – 6:30p everyday? Really?

If Dagmar left all they have are rude questions. No one is watching now. Fewer will watch in the future.

I will watch ABC, NBC, & FOX local news but I rarely watch CBS. Many of their broadcasters have moved from Charleston and I did not watch them when I was there either. So whenever I forget and turn to WGCL-TV I quickly switch the channel. I find their stories either gross (like when they insisted or running a story for days about untreated sewage backing up in an apartment complex! People are eating dinner!) Many of their stories are boring (especially in the morning). It does not matter how much they expand their news broadcasts, morning, afternoon, or evenings I doubt their ratings will improve.

700 Club will be GREAT programming on a station that plays Maury and Jerry Springer continuously all day!

I have a tough question – why wasn’t Bighair D-cup dropped long ago? If I’m feeling lazy and want the weather graphics on the screen read to me by a sweater model, I might stick around. But if I want real weather info, I turn to the other guys.

It doesn’t matter though. CBS 46 always looks bush league.
