Q100’s Jenn Hobby subbed out for Kelly Ripa this morning on “Live with Regis & Kelly,” one of four radio hosts who won a national contest to be on national TV.
She made no notable snafus and didn’t seem nervous. As a guest host, she wisely let Regis Philbin take the lead, especially during the celebrity interview segments.
Wearing a modest dark blue dress with a black belt, Hobby gave her radio family major props by name. They even aired the moment last week when she found out she made it on Regis.
“We talk about our personal lives,” she said. “We are invested in each other.”
She said she first met Bert Weiss back in 2002, a year before he hired her to replace Lindsay Brien. (She didn’t say it, but she started her radio career at the now-defunct 95.5/The Beat.)
She also told Regis how she met her fiance Grant Rivera, a principal, who was in the audience. Regis asked Grant about how American students are lagging behind others. Grant joked how his students are smarter than he is, adding, “We have to help them stay focused learning that there’s life after high school. It’s a great school.” This seemed like a rather odd place to delve into America’s education system so Regis moved on.
Jenn said she first met Grant when his school’s band came into the studio after getting invited to be part of Pres. Obama’s inauguration. “Their little geeky band members came in, and then their geeky band director came in, and then the gorgeous principal,” she said. “Well, hello! How are you? Nice to meet you!” [UPDATE: Some folks below in the comment section were offended by her use of "geeky." We'll see what she has to say Monday on the Bert Show. I'll update this then.]
She said it was a year before they had their first date.
After promos and ads, it was time for the celebrity segments.
Hayden Christensen was notably forgettable promoting a movie. She kissed his cheek when he entered so Regis later joked, “The principal didn’t like it. You might have to spend some extra time in school!”
Melissa Joan Hart, an actress promoting her ABC Family show, was livelier. She married a musician. (Jenn once married a musician, too, but that ended in divorce. She artfully chose not to mention that.) She did reference an Atlanta connection: she ran into Joey Lawrence shooting a film called “My Fake Fiance” here two years ago and that led to the sitcom they’re doing now called, of course, “Melissa & Joey.”
Hobby, a self-described foodie, wanted to do a cooking segment. She ended up hosting a “Firehouse Cook-Off” but didn’t actually get to do any cooking.
Q100’s Bert Show aired pretty much the entire hour with the show members inserting their comments. “She is really a natural,” a caller said. The audio will be up on the Bert Show website.

Jenn did OK! It would’ve been better with fewer hand motions & less clapping (Kelly doesn’t clap). I also think a hip outfit would’ve set her apart from the previous 3 co-hosts. Each one wore a conservative dress, as did Jenn. Leggings & a cool top would’ve been great, Jenn – especially for a Friday show! Her high heels made her much taller than Regis! Jenn kind of dwarfed Regis physically. She has a large head, which is GREAT for TV! Vanna White was hired by Merv Griffin because her large head looked well on TV! Good job, Jenn.

The unfortunate thing about Wendy stating, “My armpits are sweaty,” is that I’m afraid viewers thought Jenn said it instead of idiot Wendy. Wendy, would you please pipe down? You are not nearly as cute/funny as you think you are. Just be quiet sometimes! We’re doing our best to tune you out, but you just keep talking.

I cringed when Jenn Hobby described the band director and band members as “geeks.” Felt really bad for them to be called that on national TV! When Grant said, “Sir?” (as though he didn’t hear the question) after he’d already answered a couple of Regis’s questions, it was clearly a “buy time” strategy. I wonder if Grant knew he’d be interviewed!

I’m not a huge Jenn fan but I thought she did well and looked comfortable. The “geek” comment was not funny and in poor taste. That’s just the real Jenn coming through, though. I knew when I heard her fiance went shopping with her what kind of outfit she’d wind up in….conservative and all covered up. I really thought she should have worn something stylish like Kelly. I’m sure this Grant guy seems nice but I detect some control issues. Of course, Jenn has her own issues too. If you’re marrying a man in November you might want to be able to go #2 in his presence. But that’s just me…..

Ouch on the geek comment — I’m afraid that may overshadow an otherwise great performance. It’s really no different than as if she’d said fat instead of geeky — it really comes across as shallow, but I guess we all make mistakes.

Not highlighted on TBS, but Jen & Grand had their first date in January 2010. Wedding date is November. How well do you really know someone in 10 months? She won’t go #2 even behind a closed bathroom door if he’s in the residence. Clearly not being herself around him.

When will this conceeded woman finish with her 15 minutes of fame. I have met her personally out and about at appearences and other functions socially. She is very self absorbed and judgemental. Now she has had her uneventful hour on national TV…go home now. Also, in reference to her upcoming marriage…she has already been divorced once…how about getting to know Grant before you start calling divorce lawyer number 2.

I thought Jenn Hobby did a great job. Loved her outfit, loved her poise, loved her contributions. A true natural. I did cringe a bit at the “geek” comment, but come on people, it’s nothing we haven’t heard before. Band members are notoriously known as geeks even if they’re not! Unfortunately, that’s the way pop culture has framed you. It’s a shame she said it on national TV, but she was just being her bubbly, cute self — no vindictiveness behind it. I knew at that moment all the petty people would be coming out of the woodwork whining about it and using it to trash her. Everyone always has to pick something to dwell on and make it seem like the person did the absolute most worst thing on the planet. The absolute worst thing on the planet is not “Jenn Hobby called me a band geek on national TV.” Get over it. Can’t you all just be happy for someone from your hometown making a dream come true? You did a wonderful job Jenn!

Am I the only one who thinks that Jenn looked like a nervous wreck? I thought she came across as fake and unnatural. And her clapping was really annoying! I couldn’t believe she called the band members “geeks” and that they aired Wendy (which came across sounding as if Jenn said it) talking about sweaty armpits. At least she didn’t get tongue-tied. Or fall. Or get pegged in the face with a beach ball. On the positive side, loved her dress and her hair looked great! Her eyes didn’t look squinty like they usually do. Christine, she did seem more nervous than I thought she’d be. She was trying to speak very formally & properly, enunciating each word – which is understandable. However, I think she was coached (or was smart enough to think of it herself) to not be like Shannon & Jayde, who shamelessly gushed & flirted with Regis. Now, that was uncomfortable! Wish she’d worn cropped, funky pants or something fun! The assistants did fix her bra strap after the first segment. She must be on cloud 9. Good job, Jenn.

As a former band geek, I have no problem with the term. It was really disappointing to hear her call not the only the band director “Geeky” but the students as well. Such poor taste that clearly shows how she feels about those people. Within the first five minutes of what should have been an incredible experience, she blew it all away. And at that point, I turned the station. There will no doubt be a lot of PR-spin put to this on Monday’s radio show that she is a part of. But the damage, unfortunately, was done by 9:05 this morning. And on top of it all, she hideously embarrassed her future second husband. People from the South are supposed to have much better manners and taste.

C’mon people, she didn’t mean it literally, she was telling a story of how she first laid eyes on her fiance. I am pretty critical, but even I didn’t see the harm in her story, it was cute and people need comprehension skills, because it was all in context and not meant to hurt.
As far as how long she has known her fi, who cares? Good for her! She found love again and wants to get married, big deal! If she were in her 20’s I would raise a brow, but she has been there, done that and won’t make the same mistakes again.

Regardless of whether or not it is appropriate to call kids in band geeks, the fact that she would make that kind of reference about educators and students when she is marrying an educator should scare the heck out of her fiancé. She is classless and has proven to America that she has no grace under pressure. Oh my gosh…you dont step on the people on the way up because you see them on the way down. She called a band and band director (that represented Georgia) GEEKS. She overlooked the truly great thing that day when they interviewed some of the band students and band director. She was only looking out for herself. Well at least she has found someone because it sounded like she just wants to get married to anyone. You dont call high school band students and the band director geeks. Many students listen to Q100 and really respect these people. How can you hurt them by doing this. I respected Jen Hobby until this happened. She could have said something really good about that band, but lets just call them geeks and then get to the REAL story. How is your fiance principal suppose to even face the band at his own school now. She owes everyone an apology for that comment. However, I think she said what she really felt….she felt that the band coming into the studio that day was a waste and they were just a bunch of geeks. 105.7 here I come!!

Why is it that anything that goes wrong seems to happen in Atlanta? Do I remember that same discussin on Q100 and the Bert Show many times? We always get national attention for something stupid in Atlanta…now that something stupid is Jenn Hobby’s comment. I guess you have to be “In a Band” like her ex husband to be cool….you CANT be in THE band, thats just geeky. I cannot believe anyone would say that it was okay to call high school students “Geeks.” Indulge me for a minute…Bert Show 7:00 in the morning…a caller calls and says that her son is in the band and was called a “geek” by a teacher WWJHS(WHAT WOULD JENN HOBBY SAY ABOUT THIS). Also, what would Jenn Hobby say if this happened to another radio or TV personality? I think she answers this every morning by stating her opinion on every subject under the sun. Jenn, so is the engagement still on or does your fiance care more about his students? Maybe you can report on yourself next week in the celebrity gossip. On the other hand, maybe WENDY will be reporting it in your place.

You have no idea what you are saying concerning Mr. Rivera’s ex-wife. She NEVER cheated on him with her H.S. students! You say it is “documented.” That is boldface lie! Do not make comments about things of which you have no knowledge or “documents.” Sometimes marriages just don’t work out.

When did Jenn start saying “Yep!” Haha. Anyway, Rodney, your synopsis was neutral and just fine! Not only being called geeky, but these high school band members were called “little” … as though in elementary school. Oh, well. Regis should do a better job of listening. She had to tell him 3x that she had been at TBS for eight years. I thought it was a little awkward when Regis abruptly shifted to that book he was promoting.

As a teacher, I am very disappointed by Ms. Hobby’s comments. Among the biggest issues that educators are facing, is the issue of bullying. States have adopted anti-bullying legislation and millions of dollars have been spent trying to curb bullying. In it’s extreme form, bullying has led to childhood murder and suicide. It all starts with name calling. I wish Ms. Hobby could spend a few days in my world. Her name-calling, however innocent, sets us back. Kids listen and look up to personalities and celebrities. I know that my students listen to Q100. If Ms. Hobby ever becomes a parent, I hope that her attitude and flip comments change. Also, I know Grant Rivera…he should be embarrassed but I’m afraid that he is actually more shallow than his fiancé. They are both embarrassing themselves and apparently don’t know it.

I don’t think we are haters just because we called Jenn out on her “geeky” comment. This is a grown woman soon to be married to a principal, she is not a teenager. Flip comments like that show a person’s true colors. Regis looked pretty uncomfortable too.

OKay 1st, I am a former band member, and I have many times described myself as a former band geek, as did most of the band members. So, if you were offended by that comment, get a backbone. Second, no one said anyone HAD to watch the show, so if you don’t like Jenn Hobby, then why did you watch it? Third, how many times have you been on national TV with millions watching you? She did a FANTASTIC job and represented Atlanta very well.
As for the Bert Show, once again, if you don’t like the cast members, DON’T LISTEN TO THE SHOW. I think they do a great job in the morning, and I listen every morning.
So if you are going to whine on here, don’t bother posting your comment. No one wants to read it.

Some brutal folks commenting on here. Down right mean commenting on her appearance and her complexion, and her relationship. Wow im amazed how cruel you guys can be. Lets see how you guys do hosting on national tv. I was also in band and it didnt offend me at all. If you dont like her you dont have to watch her when she’s on tv or listen to the Bert show. Think about if it were you being judged, and try to be nice. Jenn did a great job and looked beautiful.

Scott G.: We did not apply for the job or campaign relentlessly to get people to vote us onto a national show. Nobody is saying they could’ve done a better job. If you choose a public career, you will be scrutinized…which is why many of us opt to not be a public figure. If listeners enjoy Bert, Jeff, and Melissa, we understand that we just have to put up with Wendy’s amazingly ignorant comments. (She’s an embarrassment to 20-somethings.) That little sausage needs to hush, if even for only a few minutes, to give us relief. Do you have any idea why this is called a “blog?” If it bothers you so much, don’t log into it. Now, go back to taping “Save That!” clips.

Atlanta, Just because jenn wanted to do the Regis gig doesnt mean it welcomes hateful comments. Yes it’s a blog and thats why I put my comment up, but not all the comments on here are mean spirited. When I read some of the comments I was shocked and thought thats going a little to far. Its one thing to say that you feel she didnt do a good job, but the comments talking about a wart on her face and a break out was just mean. Then there’s the one’s making comments about her relationship with Grant. Do you not have more important things to do instead of tearing someone down. I hope that if Jenn reads these she knows that most of the people support her and that she has thick skin for the haters…

I thought both Jenn and Grant did a very good job. The geek comment was just a slip because she was nervous and who wouldn’t be nervous on National TV. Give her a break. I suspect she will apologize for the slip on Monday and all the band kids will be just fine. She has done so much for them by helping to raise all that money for them to travel to DC to march in the inaugaration – I would hate to think the kids or their band director would hold a grudge.

Naysayers: it’s just so easy for you to say whatever hurtful things you want on here to Jenn because she made one minuscule mistake because of nerves. (Haven’t we all?) First we have the person pretending to be Ryan Newell, bringing up her past divorce. Next, we have people speculating about the kind of relationship she has with Grant Rivera and proclaiming to “know” that she’s not good enough for him. Then there’s the shallow people who want to hate on her because of her choice of dress, the wart on her face, her hand gestures, her small eyes, etc.
Seriously? You call Jenn Hobby shallow. Yet all of these comments prove that you are the shallow, petty, and pathetic ones. I love how most of you couldn’t even put up your real names to own up to your hateful comments. Keep hiding behind your computer screens and throwing stones, little sheep. You’ll never learn.

I understand that a lot of pressure was on her since she was on national TV, but I think all of us (including Regis) got that uncomfortable feeling when Jenn said those comments. I think she was trying to get a laugh from the audience, and unfortunately, it was at the expense of students and a band director. I thought it was very immature. I’m interested to hear what she has to say on Monday.

“I like really don’t think of the word “geeky” (she’ll say geeks – less offensive) in a bad way at all or whatever! I heard from several band members, and they weren’t at all offended or whatever, you know what I mean? I even like talked to the band director, and he was like fine with it.”

How much do you want to bet that the band director or the school has already been contacted by the station, or Jenn, or her principal fiancé, in an effort to do damage control. Of course they’ll play it down as a nothing comment, and of course they will say they “heard” from the band director and he (she?) is cool with it. Jenn will be Miss Wonderful again. And soon she will have her new husband, Mr. Hobby to dote over her and pick up the dogs and cats she hits with her car. Airhead. BTW, who thinks Jenn’s grandma really blogged? Were the capital letters supposed to convince us? Please. Onto Bert’s movie role: The Nose in 3D.

I am over this. I am Jenn’s cousin. Do you have nothing better to do than then make nasty comments? If you do not know Jenn personally then you should not be saying anything about her. You know nothing about her or what really goes on in her personal life. How dare you say that nasty comment about hitting animals. You can sit back and speculate on what you think you know and make nasty comments about her dress and how she looks but it only makes you look petty. jenn is not a malicious person, her geeky comment was not meant to hurt anyone….. get over it! and yes, that REALLY was OUR grandmother who blogged. We have a great, tight- knit family who supports each other! We hope that you are that lucky!
The Real Issue
August 22nd, 2010
9:10 pm
We are all missing the real issue. Jenn is marrying a high school principal. Every morning students at this school listen as Jenn talks about her and the fiance’s life ( no matter what the subject matter is). Students hear the life of their principal being paraded around the airwaves each morning. I am not bashing anyone, just stating the facts. Aren’t we suppose to keep our personal lives PERSONAL. It might have been different if the principal had not been sitting in the audience. However, he was there and he was proud. I am not harping on the one incident. I am concerned about the whole picture. How effective can you be as a principal if your personal life is open for everyone to see. Isn’t that why most people have their Facebook information locked to the outside world? Either you want to be a big time “newsmaker” with your fiance or you want to concentrate on the future decision makers of this world…our students.

In total agreement with the above “real issue” post. If I were a parent of a student that attends the school mentioned, I would be concerned. Ms. Hobby should be aware of the importance of a principal’s image to the community. I don’t know the principal but I’m sure he is careful how he lives his life and how he presents himself. They both should think long and hard about future public appearances together, as his career will be the one to implode, not hers.

Another one of the radio co-hosts on Live! wouldn’t disclose anything about her boyfriend. Melissa Carter (very wisely) uses a fake name for her girlfriend. Why did Hobby want to use Grant’s real name and his school on TBS? Especially when she’s been talking about sleeping with him, that he spends every night at her place because her neighborhood is “hip” and his is not, etc.
Her point about little geeky band members and the geeky band director was: “And THEN, the principal walked in, and I said, ‘Hello! How are YOU?!!!” Clearly, she was contrasting geeky (usually socially inept and below average in attractiveness) with the ultra-cool and handsome principal.
Anyway, I agree that it’s unfortunate that his students & their parents are listening to very intimate details about their principal, including his snarky, sarcastic “Not your most admirable quality” comment to Jenn’s friend and how his romantic proposal wasn’t that great because Jenn admitted that she was pouty and mad about having to go to a museum (for HIS job that day).
I feel bad that her grandmother is reading this blog, but who in the family even told her to come to this site? . .

Regis mentioned cougars, and Jenn asked what that is. Hayden listed actors in the movie, clearly avoiding naming Chris Brown but Jenn said with excitement and a big smile, “And Chris Brown TOO, right?” (Chris doesn’t have a lot of marquee value nowadays.) When Regis mentioned it was 4:15 in Hawaii, Jenn asked, “In the MORNING?” Big sigh.

I love The Bert Show and thought Jenn looked great and did a great job. The geek slip was a little cringe worthy, but I knew she would address it and apologize on Monday. My only critique of her was that she she have looked at the camera more, that it. But for your first time on National TV, I think she nailed it.
However, I do sometimes agree with the people who are saying she should not discuss so much about her fiance, especially the sleeping over and the being snide to her friends. His students put him on a pedestal and thats where he needs to be if he is in charge of a bunch of high school students. Just maybe something for Jenn to think about it.

Thank you to the bloggers who have commented on “the real issues.” If teachers are expected to maintain totally privacy on Facebook so that students cannot see any personal information, how is it acceptable for a principal’s private life to be aired on the radio every morning? It is certainly disconcerting that a high school principal’s fiance’ makes derogatory comments to band students and their very hard-working director. It would have been much more positive had she mentioned the band’s representation of Georgia in the inaugural parade. A principal needs to be “focused” on serving as an instructional leader in his or her school- not seeking 15 minutes of fame that only serves to further the negative stereotypes of public schools!

Yes, Christine, Jenn apologized several times, and she sounded very sincere. Truly. As expected, Bert aired callers, all who proclaimed they were not at all offended, and one parent from South Cobb High School proclaimed “Not ONE person from the school took ANY offense to the comments.” Listeners are gearing up for Day 3 of hearing how beautiful Jenn looked, how the choice of dress and accessories were perfect, that Jenn is better than Kelly, what a natural she is, that there was absolutely no room for improvement, etc., etc. Running theme on TBS is that Jenn is going national & won’t be on TBS much longer.

However, Hobby has loved Wendy since she was an intern, and Jeff believes that since she works so hard, she should be on the air. Jeff and Wendy are also close personal friends. Making sense why we have to listen to her now?

NO NO NO I-675 and I-285. First of all, that caller was not a parent from South Cobb High School, but a parent from her fiance’ school. It seems that every body is acting very unprofessional and is completely acceptable. I feel sorry for our children.

The caller was a school board member who is infatuated with Rivera, jenn’s fiancé(in case you missed one of the thousand times she said it on air. Apparently the school board is starting to become annoyed with Rivera. Let’s hope Jenn makes it to the big time because her fiancé is headed toward unemployment, ironically, because of her. Jenn’s comments were more revealing than anything. How could she not be thinking about Grant and what would happen to him if she called his kids geeks? Plus, what is up with her being on television talking about the news? I thought Jenn was the entertainment person and Melissa Carter is the news director. I thought Melissa used to work at CNN. Is Jenn openly trying to take Melissa’s job? I think Melissa is the only intellectual voice on FM morning radio.
