After more than five years at 790/The Zone, mid-day host Brandon Adams is leaving the world of pampered athletes and obnoxious coaches to delve into the equally Byzantine world of test scores, school boards politics and parental demands.
The 33-year-old Gainesville native and University of Georgia graduate said he is going to pursue a masters degree in educational administration at Georgia State University.
Teamed with Jeff Woolverton from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays, he put in his notice last week and informed listeners today.
For eight years, he was an elementary school teacher and is returning to that profession this fall after two and a half years working full time at the Zone. (He worked part-time as an on-air host on weekends for three years.)
“Doing a radio show was a culmination of a dream of mine,” he said in a phone interview today. “I was lucky to get to do that the last few years. I just felt the time is right to focus on the next phase of my professional development.”
He said growing up, he admired Rush Limbaugh and after college, when he heard the Zone, he knew he wanted to work there. “It combined two passions of mine: talk radio and sports.”
He started doing menial jobs at the Zone answering phones and such but finally got a shot at doing radio talk with Woolverton in 2005.
Since he went mid-days, ratings have not been great. And feedback from fans on this blog have been rough.
Adams said he wasn’t immune to the criticism, but he got used to it after awhile.
“It doesn’t really bother me,” he said. “It doesn’t keep me awake at night. I’m thankful for the people who enjoy the show. I appreciate when they listen when they can.”
He thinks his last day will be Thursday on the air. He is just glad he’s been able to say goodbye, something many radio hosts don’t get to do. He also isn’t sure what the Zone’s next step will be during mid-days.
“Whatever shape it takes over the next few months, I’m sure it will be positive changes,” he said optimistically.

That first poster is insane. Adams was one of the best things about the Zone. He could easily anchor his own national show and I will miss him. Wolverton is unlistenable without him.

One of the least talented radio individuals I have ever heard anywhere, and his partner isn’t much better. It’s a good move for him because his talent wasn’t clearly in radio. Hopefully he’s a much, much better educator then a radio personality/host. I doubt he could be much worse, but I wish him luck in this much needed career decision.

You losers need to shut up about Adams-how many of you have followed what might have seemed like an impossible dream and actually followed it through to completion? How many of you keyboard hot-shots could even get on the air and do a passable show? Brandon and Woolvey were the Everyman guys who actually got on the air…give them some credit for trying at least-that’s better than most of you could probably say. Nice backhanded compliments too…typical ATL insincerity…

I rarely post but had to add my two cents. Brandon was the worst sports talk personality I have ever heard. EVER and I am 49 years old. So often I had to change stations when he would bully Jeff to agree about some inane point of view. Funny reading this article because I always thought he was a bad impersonation of Rush. Brandon never did his homework, Always exaggerated, (I’m being pushed by state patrol?) Would try to make points that only made sense in a Red Sky world, where gravity pulls up. So often I would get in my car after work and listen to 680 because I had to switch stations during lunch and forget to switch back. Want a bold suggestion for his replacement. Hire Jerry Elinger from down the dial. There is no room for him there and he is the everyman intelligent point of view the Brandon wished for but never could be. And his temperament would go well with Woolve

Brandon and Woolvy were VERY good when they worked weekends together, debuting in February 2004. After nearly four years of weekends and fill-in work, they went monday-friday beginning Jan. 2008 and the tone of the show changed almost from Day One. Too bad, because they both know sports at a very high level and both worked very hard to be prepared and have a quality show. Brandon seemed to get more serious about almost every topic than he ever had when he and Jeff worked weekends and Woolvy seemed to be on his heels most of the time, not sure if he should call out his co-host or play along and hope it got better. Just an observation.
Here’s another observation: management at 790 never lifted one solitary finger to help this show improve or even simply develop. They fired the update guy to save $8 an hour, making Jeff and Brandon responsible for doing updates and, unless you’ve hosted a show, it’s hard to understand just how valuable that three or so minutes between segments is.
As far as I know, that show never had a paid producer, either. Could be wrong, but if B & W ever did, it was one of the lowest-paid employees at BLB. So now Brandon and Jeff were prepping for the show, performing the show, doing updates between segments of the show AND producing the show. All so management could pay a producer . . . $25 a day? MAYBE $50 a day, but that’s a big maybe. At that rate of pay, the producer is working a second full-time job and has virtually no out-of-studio time to work on, or even think about, the show he is supposed to be producing.
There are many other points to be made re: 790’s complete disregard for that time slot (rarely, if ever, did they get the premium, paid experts such as Barnhart, McCann, etc. Super Bowl time? Every show other than Brandon and Jeff would go, etc.). Some of the blame does fall to B & W, as 2 1/2 years is enough time to tinker and fiddle until you get the show to the place you want, but far far far far more blame goes to management. They never invested the $$ or the time or the mere interest to give the show any chance to succeed.

I give Brandon credit for chasing his dream. I don’t blame him at all for that. I was just commenting on the way he performed the job. I don’t know if I could do the job any better, but then again, I’m not employed in that profession so it doesn’t matter. He was and thus folks have every reason to voice an opinion of his work. Not that he does (or should) give 2 flips about the opinions of anyone here. He gave it a shot and it didn’t work out. No shame in that at all.

Changes in broadcasting are part of the job in most markets. Here in Atlanta, as has been mentioned by on-air talent at The Zone before, it’s different. This city’s listeners give more leeway for hosts to have longer on-air runs. Evidence: Randy & Spiff, Cindy & Ray, Steve & Vicki, Buck & Kinkade, heck, even Max & Morgan! (Good googlie mooglies!)
Saying this, I wish Brandon a successful translation back to his previous chosen direction in education.
Isn’t it interesting that about a week or two after the article about how Dickey Broadcasting was burying 790, that this change happens? A couple of days after, Steak Shapiro sat alone on The Bottom Line … er… Mayhem, and did a solid hour “Ask the Manager-esqe’ rant on how hateful folks can be on blogs, etc. At least he didn’t trow up that tired topic that hsts use when they have a hangover & don’t want to do proper show prep: Is Atlanta a real Sports Town?
I forsee John Michaels getting a midday gig, perhaps with Wolvie. They’re auditioning 20 somethings to see if they can discover/create another, younger ‘king-lite’. Good luck with that.
My suggestion? Move Steakie out of mornings – let Chris & Nick go with an update guy, put John Michaels & Wolvie in as filler until you get a better option midday, keep the rest and hope that you can land keep Tech sports and the Falcons away from Dickey. If not – buh bye BLB. St. Louis was beri beri bad for you. Shoulda listened to Chris.

Adams has been George Costanza of sports radio–everything he says is wrong. Really, just about every time he tries to address a strategic or technical aspect of a sport he gets it wrong. It’s uncanny. You would think that he’d get it right occasionally given the number of opinions he sets out there, but he doesn’t. The dude doesn’t seem to understand that being passionate about a team does not mean you actually know anything about the sport. Wolverton is just as dumb, although not quite as bombastic and annoying. The worst team in Atlanta by far. So bad that I would rather listen to Colin Cowchip. Man, do they suck.

Can I have ‘The Bottom Line’ back? Please?
Here’s my dream lineup: The Bottom Line in the mornings, a good “knowledge” show in the mid-mornings (like what they had with Chuck and Chernoff), The Stews in their usual time slot, and then a good afternoon drive show (without David Pollack. David Pollack should be in the mid-mornings talking serious sports talk.)
Mike Bell should stay in the evenings. Steak Shapiro should be off the air.
That’s what I would do if I were 790, but they are hurting for cash. That’s why they are looking for a bunch of kids.

Who cares anymore. I stopped listening to that station long ago. I crank up the satellite for Howard in the mornings and then a little Chuck and Chernoff in the afternoon down the dial. After 3:00 PM there’s nothing listenable on the AM dial. The Stewarts are a couple of racist and Mike Bell listens to too much satellite radio and lifts his material directly from Howard and Scotty Ferrall. Kincade is what he is…Another arrogant damn yankee.

Last week, I knew once Rodney Ho outed 790 for their turbulence it would not be good for B&W. In the real world, if you are brought in to a company as junior resource, people ultimately will always look at you as junior resource. That is the fate of BA. In corporate america, you just switch jobs to get a ‘perception refresh’. Ultimately, that was just too much to overcome. It will also be too much to overcome for talent search of 20 somethings they are conducting right now as reported by Rodney Ho.
Wolvey probably got a bit of reprieve because he works GA Tech sidelines for football games for jacket radio network. 790 probably did not want to shake that up on eve of season. He will be gone too.
The next shoe to drop has to be Cellini. Maheim needs a real Jock, not a radio one, in the morning to counter Leo.

If your 14 I understand liking his sophomoric since of humor but anyone else I cannot imagine seeing anything in his abilities as an on air personality. Brandon did spend too much time dissecting some inane point that seemed to him to make the world turn but to me was just a after thought at best. If I could pigeon hole him he seems like I guy who loves watching sports but most likely never played anything past little league baseball. He just seemed like a casual observer not an informed guy who really understood the major sports.

@ 2nd rate sports town…please feel free to leave Atlanta. We don’t sell out play-off games because we spent our money on season tickets to college games to be able to buy season tickets we made donations to the school we support and then pay for the weekly trek and tailgate festivities. After that pro sports is just something we watch as we recover from the sport we love. Big difference between Sports town and pro sports town. The “2 Live Stews” are a joke…….I have heard more Ebonics on their show than on a Marta train. They must get a dollar for every time they mention Crown Royal on the show. Call me Al has it pegged, there was ZERO support for that show and those two from management. When a show moves from weekends to weekdays, it needs an incredible push from management to change the theatre of the mind.
The theatre of the mind is the perception that the audience has for the show and it’s hosts. If you have heard them on the weekends, you tend to perceive them as weekend only talent. It takes managerial support to change this perception.
Ultimately, the only way to win when you don’t have support, a producer, or regular paid expert analysts is to be unique. Creativity in topics and discussion, along with audio, can keep your show fresh and even comedic at times. Unfortunately, this is not the strength of that show. They often fall into the trap of setting up a weekend show in a weekday time slot. “Call us with your favorite Falcons draft pick”, “Should the Hawks sign Joe Johnson?” etc. All of that is fine for a latenight, weekend, or small market show. But Atlanta requires more.
There is an audience for Atlanta sports talk radio as there is always passionate responses to these discussions. It’s just going to take a different set of ideas and direction to give the listeners in this city the kind of shows they can get behind.

My opinion of “Steak” Shapiro — Narcissitic ego-maniac. And could someone shut him up when he starts talking about food & dining establishments!
B – Adams …. every now & then I thought he was on point with a topic, so for me that made him slightly better than his partner, Woolverton. And JW, IMO, is NOT good at all.
The station is in need of a COMPLETE OVERHAUL. Steak, Cillini, B&W, and Bell need to go bye-bye. The Stews hip-hip garb needs to go too, but ratings-hos in Mngt will keep them. Dimino and Pollack (and I’m a GT guy) are the only “professionals” worth keeping.

I’m shocked… it took almost a day before people started lobbing hate at Steak Shapiro and the Stews. As much as some of you guys hate the Stews, maybe you missed the fact that they get more big name guests than all the other local shows on 790 and 680 combined.
Between satellite radio, streaming internet and podcasts I barely listen to ATL sports radio anymore save for the Stews and maybe a few minutes of Mayhem. Atlanta sports radio is severely lacking any real personalities. To be honest on B&W, I barely knew who was who. Same goes for Buck & Kincade, Chuck & Chernoff, David Pollock…etc. they are all very vanilla. The Mayhem guys are just decent (I’ll admit Steak IS annoying) and the Stews, while not everyone’s cup of tea, definitely have their niche.
But there is absolutely NOTHING on our airwaves that comes close to Dan Patrick, Dan Lebatard, Kornheiser, Rome, John Salley, Mad Dog Russo, Ferrall and some of the other wildly entertaining voices out there.

Brandon’s actually a very nice person when I’ve listened, to use a wrestling analogy, he’s “worked heel” a lot to drive calls on subjects and taken a side he doesn’t agree with to spur conversation. Something a lot of people don’t do in this town. If you had a show where people agreed with the host all the time it doesn’t work especially in call in shows. Good luck to you Brandon!!

Good luck to you, BA! As I’ve always said, you gave hope to the guy who sat in his car and thought “Geez, if THIS guy can host a radio show, there’s hope for me!!”
Most of the time you were pretty annoying, and I found it nearly impossible to support you after you made this statement a couple of years ago during a discussion about Native American’s protesting mascots that belittled their heritage: “I really don’t care that they are offended …”
What a crass and ignorant comment for someone who claims to be an educator. Let’s hope you gained a little intelligence during your respite from education. I would hate for someone who feels that way to be on the administrative level or on a school board or board of regents.

Adams would read an article with the headline, “Turner Field sufferes tremendous riot, 9 fans dead 11 injured”, and he’d have a 30 minute diatribe about the use of the word tremendous.
“When I hear the word tremendous, I think of things that are large. The Hindenburg was tremendous in every way. It was big, it went down in big flames, and the radio man was shouting in a tremendous voice as he witnessed the carnage. The riot at Turner last night only encompassed a small section of the stadium, and there wasnt even a big fire. While tragic, I’m not sure the word tremendous really fits here. I’d prefer to use the word horrific. And when we come back, I’ll tell you why. You’re listening to Brandon and Woolvy on WQXI, 790 the Zone.”

The problem with 790 is that 70% of their shows’ content seems to be non-sports related. I want to listen to scores, then sports discussion – not which restaurant in Atlanta has the best mac & cheese. Am I silly for wanting a sports talk radio station to focus on sports?
Brownie

For the most part, 680 has been kicking 790’s tail for some time now, but primarily because their mgmt is much more aggressive.
Someone earlier made the point that ALL of the Atlanta talk radio pales in comparison to the national guys (Colin, Patrick, Van Pelt, etc.)…..well of course they do. It’s a matter of resources, money, signal, professional producers/directors, and their ability to get big name guests. But, with local talk radio, we all get much more info and discussion on what we care most about….local teams.
We do have a varied group of on-air “talent” to listen to. I watch Mayhem in the morning, but I really don’t see Steak bringing anything to the show at all, other than annoyance. I actually enjoy Cellini (I think he’s witty and entertaining, and does know sports), and Dimino (other than his voice) is the best Atlanta has to offer – very informative and MAKES VALID POINTS.
At 680 in the morning, I think Rude is a professional radio guy, and he has made the switch to sports very well. I don’t expect top analysis from him, and most importantly he doesn’t try to portray himself as such. Laurentino is the most arrogant blowhard on the air, and Leo should just go back to coaching.
Two Live Stews – let’s face it….you either like ‘em…or you’ve got a brain in your head. Talk about a one-note song.
Brandon – impressive breath control….don’t think I’ve ever heard him stop pontificating long enough to take a breath. He’s from the school of “why say something in 20 words, when I could use over 200?”. Wolverton was never given any time to do anything but just agree with his blowhard partner.
Mike Bell – let’s face it, about as creative and talented as they come, and fun to listen to, but obviously very juvenile. Pollack – something’s missing – just not found his radio voice yet.
And then there’s Buck & Kincaid. Opposites work out sometimes. Pretty good balance, and you just have to realize that Buck isn’t very polished and will be forever somewhat tongue in cheek (”my God, can you believe they pay me to do this??”), and Kincaid IS the closest thing we have to a national voice.
You’re welcome to disagree….

Now, after saying my peace about BA, it’s time for Steven to be a real manager and take himself off the air.
It’s obvious he made this move and BA is doing the noble, less-embarrassing thing by moving on. I’m sure there was a conversation a while back between Steven, “Salsa” and BA, in which BA was told that it might be a good idea for him to start “exploring other career options.”
But now it’s time for the guy with the biggest ego in town (yes, even bigger than Kincaid), without merit, to admit that he’s not very good at being on air. The fact that there is still a segment called “Things I Learned Over the Weekend” is proof that the guy has serious inferiority issues, and needs to keep himself on the air to maintain his own sense of self-importance.

Sorry to hear that Brandon is leaving radio. I think he has real talent, and made it a point to listen to the weekend show (even though I hate the Dawgs). The daily show never quite worked, largely because Brandon’s talents are in discussion and a bit of free-form dialogue, not the quick hits and boring interviews that their short mid-day show features. Al’s points above are spot-on. The weekend show allowed him much more time and freedom to do what he does best. He will be missed.
I have found that the most enjoyable stuff on Atlanta sports radio is usually in the weekend and non-prime hours. I’d much rather listen to Brandon, Sam Raden, John Michaels, Hans Hiser, etc., on the weekends than the more prominent shows 790 and 680 offer.

Gee, Brownie… that’s rough.
The Stews are the only show I listen to on 790. I find them to be very entertaining, and on-target with their perspectives. I have to agree with those who say that there is an audience for their type of program. The fact is, The 2-Live Stews program is very unique, and unlike anything on radio. Of course, if you don’t like them, then tune into something else. But there are a lot of people who are looking for the Stews candid perspective that parallel a demographic who’s ignored in sports-talk & guy-talk radio. That’s why the Stews have better ratings than any other 790 show, and even better ratings than their competition across the dial.
I find the Stews much easier to listen to than the arrogant, egotistical, self-promotional, Mr. Know-It-All and Mr. Perfect Matt Chernoff. There are’nt enough microphones in the studio to satisfy him.

Actually fellas, if 790 corrects their mid-day show and can give Cellini more time as first banana on Mayhem; then the Zone can be successful once again. They have the best sports talk, the best interviews, and overall better personalities.
The one thing they need to do is the next time they feel like blowing off $11 million, how about putting it to good use by getting an FM signal and simulcasting the station. They would triple their audience overnight and can land the radio networks of the home teams and other sports.

Lou….it’s because Jerry Ellinger sucks. You think Brandon Adams was bad on the radio, Ellinger is even worse. I always cringed when the guy showed up on ESPNews and did his little commentaries. The guy has no business being a radio host. Oh and Dimino is much better at talking sports and baseball compared to the 680 group. I have never seen so many people excited to hear Don Sutton get on the radio in my life. However, I do have to give kudos to Chuck Dowdle as he is the only one on Braves pre or post game shows that is even enjoyable to listen too. Steak – our version of Chris Berman
Kincade – believe it or not, this guy has mellowed quite a bit and is okay for the most part. And like the air, he is exactly that way in person. You either like him or he aggravates you.
Dimino – by far the star of 790.
Cellini – I’m not sure anyone would miss him.
Buck – local and all about the homer approach.
Woolverton – he needs help getting his ideas out.
Bell and Pollack – talk about 2 opposites. It seems to work, but can’t hear them in Duluth regularly.
Dave Hubbard – his one diatribe on rap music-2-speech makes him my favorite personality.
Mitch Evans – he and ‘Randi’ are now on 680…..somehow he keeps finding work.
The 2 Stews – I get most of it, but can’t listen for very long….their interview skills need help…did you hear the Barkley/Doug encounter where Doug did zero research and axed Chuck when he was going to go into the HOF? Ryan has such a chip on his shoulder because he made it to the league, so he gets it all…..and both will defend Vick til the end.
Chuck and Chernoff – probably the best on the air, and that’s not saying a whole lot.
I wouldn’t mind hearing more of 3D talking about the Hawks either. He has a good opinion of what goes on.

This show was atrocious and this move had to be made. Make no mistake, this move wasn’t something Brandon just decided to do on his own accord. There was no way he would of left the radio job if he didn’t have to. Fact is the Zone finally realized how awful the show truly is and that it isn’t going to work and they informed Brandon that he wasn’t going to be renewed and he needed to find other options. The only mystery is why they haven’t told the other no talent hack that he cohosts with to hit the bricks as he a train wreck of a host as well.
If Steak was smart (yes I know you have to suspend your disbelief on that), he would put his gigantic ego and pride aside and remove himself from the air and simply do the job of helping run the station and it’s business affairs. This is clearly the only situation (him being part owner of the station) in any market where he could maintain a job as on air ‘talent’.
However, making smart decisions is not the strong point of the zone management as you can see from their idiotic business ventures and decision, in conjunction with their programming decisions. Now that they have begun to address the problem with the mid-day show, they need to address the other terrible shows they have, like the one with the two functional retards that follows B&W’s show. In addition, could you have a bigger buffoon on the radio then that intellectual dwarf David Pollack? After the stewpids, he has to be the most ignorant and stupid host I’ve ever heard on the radio. He seems almost gleeful and proud of the fact that he doesn’t know anything about any subject outside of sports. That’s just sad honestly, and his partner is fat, bloated, balding, alcoholic that thinks juvenile antics is clever and fresh.
While 790 has major issues, 680 isn’t much better. Perry is an obnoxious blow hard that has absolutely no business being on the radio in any market. He should be selling insurance somewhere and not doing radio. Leo is ok, but he is in over his head as full time radio guy. He would be ok doing special duty like Braves and baseball related programming, but beyond that, he just doesn’t have it.
Meanwhile, Buck is completely worthless hack. If it wasn’t for the fact that he was the QB for the 1980 national championship team, he would never have a job in broadcasting. The fact is the guy is as dumb as a stump and has an incredibly boring radio personality. For someone who apparently played football and baseball, he has an amazing lack of insight and complete inability to articulate anything remotely interesting or insightful. Instead of calling Kevorkian to assist in suicides, you should just call Buck and have him talk to you at your bedside.
reality

Oh, and outside of the stewpids, that pre-game baseball show that Buck use to host by himself (what they did last year before they had the Braves brtoadcast) were quite possibly the worst radio shows ever done. Talk about a pure unadulterated torture that show was.
Furthermore, when Kincade goes on vacation, please get anyone else in that studio with Buck, because he is utterly incapable of carrying a show by himself (hell, he isn’t capable of doing one with another person, but lets just go one step at a time).
Honestly, I think Chad Scott has talent and deserves a shot to be a full time host. He is very good when he fills in for someone on occasion, and has very well rounded knowledge on sports and many other non-sports related subject. As far as 790 goes, they should give Hubbard and Hans Heiserer an opportunity at being full time hosts because they are clearly more talented then most of the regular hosts there.

People in radio don’t get to announce they are leaving. Clearly he was not going to be brought back. 790 has announced they are looking for young talent (that they won’t have to pay much) and they needed a place to put them.
680 the Fan is killing 790 in the ratings, just took the Hawks away and is clearly making more money. Adams is just the next Zone talent to get the axe. Steak probably couldn’t pay him anymore.
790 switches talent about every 2 years and they need some sort of buzz. Good Luck Brandon, glad you can get off the ship before it sinks.

IMHO, a huge loss for The Zone and ATL talk radio. BA never took the obvious viewpoint, but offered a unique, refreshing take on the topic du jour. A devoted 790 listener, this move weakens The Zone as it faces an up-hill battle with 790 and satellite radio.

Yeah 790 will be off the air by next summer……how many years have I read you people say that on this blog? Yet they are still there. Oh and Tech re-upped with the Zone just last year so I don’t think they are going anywhere, especially when they had the chance to leave and didn’t.
I don’t think this is about money, but a mutual agreement between Brandon and the station. The ratings weren’t there and he wasn’t going to be given a better time slot. Plus they have tried him at a few different areas as well (once hosted hardball and still does a weekend show from time to time). BA just never seemed to find himself. Sounds like a great person and all, but not cut out for the radio gig.

There’s definitely a disproportionate amount of 790 bashing vs. 680. I have a feeling 680 mgt encouraged its staff to post negatively about 790 and its talent. This is an unusual volume of posts for a relatively unknown mid-day sports talk host.

I listen for entertainment and don’t take these serious as others it appears. Brandon best wishes. The only person I don’t really like on 790 is Pollack; he doesn’t fit the station at all (and oh boy has he brought dumb jock back to the forefront). Also, have the Stews lost their mind with that Jazzy; her voice more specifically that laugh is downright TERRIBLE!!! Leo – probably should be coaching somewhere and wishes he never left the good thing that he had going in ATL. I’m willing to bet he’s been black balled for bad mouthing the Orioles organization as much as he does. And who gives a crap about ND down here anyway?
Perry – no problems there, offers serious insight.
Kincade – good analysis, but often times has to keep repeating the same point when he’s solo.

BA seemed like a good guy and he had some talent but needed time (and maybe a smaller market) to work on some things. Good luck to him as he, like a lot of us these days, takes a new career path.
Regarding 790’s mid-day replacement, how about pairing a Tech homer and a UGA homer? They could discuss other topics rationally, but when addressing anything Tech, UGA, SEC, or ACC related, they could become contentious, nasty, attacking a$$holes like many of us on the blogs. Would need equally talented debaters (and maybe a referee), but something like that in the mid-day could be interesting. Also, if they are holding auditions, I’d like to hear what Chadd Scott from 680 can do.
Regarding format, I think including some local flavor (restaurants, concerts, etc.) and personal life (“my wife’s such a ballbuster”, etc.) mixed in with competent sports talk can be entertaining. But, it’s a fine line and it’s a constant challenge for the hosts to remain interesting, crazy, or humorous in their personal lives. Take the AM show at 790: used to be great but there’s very little mayhem anymore. Cellini’s mesmerizing roid-rage rants about someone taking his lunch from the company fridge or similar nonsense was like walking up on a street fight. Now that he’s settled down he’s not half as enjoyable. Mike Bell, would recount some lecherous, “out all night and sleep in your clothes” shenanigans which was somehow appropriate when he was part of this crew, but now seems Johnny’s Hideaway-ish given his age and when juxtaposed against Saint Pollack. And even Steak’s side notes were listenable back when he seemed excited to let us know about a great new spot or an exclusive party from which most of us are excluded. But, lately there’s a sense of boredom and big shot entitlement that can come across. On the other hand, maybe there just isn’t that much new and interesting going on in Atlanta or sports in general at the moment.

I refuse to listen to your station as a white 30 yr old when you’re telling me you don’t want me by keeping the Dawg and Poodle show on the air. I don’t mind a host bringing a different flavor by any means. But an ENTIRE 3 hr block of time exclusively dedicated to one narrow group of people. You can’t say the other shows with white hosts in Atlanta are speaking ONLY to white men. If that were the case, they’d be off the air. Sounds like it’s time to become a mexican AM channel.

Sounds like a little girl. 790 is definitely reeling and could be in danger of being kayoed by 680, who recently added former Zoney Mitch Evans to the fold on their sorry Braves coverage. How “The Mitch” wasn’t part of the original mix after having done solid work the last 3 years at WGST is a mystery. Brandon took things to seriously. It wasn’t fun to listen to his show. He always talked over his partner. I hope he really wanted to leave. I don’t think so, no one WANTS to leave a radio gig.
Steak is just awful- Full of himself, not a great personality. Thinks he is funnier than he is.
Stews- Just appalling. Can’t believe they are still on the radio. Hate white people and think being ghetto is funny. Bad Bad Bad radio listen.
Dimino-Love him. His passion for baseball is reflected in his work. He is Always prepared and must die a slow death everyday he works with steak
“Hometeam” always classed up the joint. Disagree he butchered Atlanta history. Knew his stuff. He, Chernoff and Kang should have been kept by 790.
Pollack and Bell-Dumb listen. Guys have nothing in common. Gave it a try, then gave it up.

This is clearly a case of him “leaving” before he was fired. I am sure his co-host will be off the air full time soon as well. After all, all this guy Adams talked about – even in the dead of summer on the hottest of days – was college football. He would scour the internet for other people’s point of view and then do an entire show around “This from Joe Blow at the Austin Statesman…do you agree?”
Why would the guy who is all college football all the time leave now that we are about to approach college football season?
Easy answer….he was fired.

Good sports talk requires two things – neither one exist in Atlanta, unfortunately.
One, good hosts who have a distinct point of view and then are prepared with facts, etc. to back up the argument. They need the debate skills of a good lawyer with the creativity and style of a well versed sports fan.
Two, good callers. The reason that the sports stations here are filled with “blow hards” is because neither of them, especially in drive time, can get a decent call to save their life. I would say a good call comes in once a week, at best. Ever dial into drive time? You can get on the air in under 30 seconds…unless they have filled the 5 hours with “guests” and replays of “guests” in order to deal with the void of callers.
What makes sports talk anywhere that it thrives – NY, Philly, SF, Chicago, etc. – great is the depth of calls and the hosts who field them.
Here, we have neither….

I enjoyed the show Brandon, you carried Wolverton whose voice is so high pitched. Wish you well in your new endeavors. I listen to 790 in your time slot. I can not listen to the time slot before you, that crew does not get it it aint NY, it’s Atlanta, all their inside jokes and coulda shouda wouldas drive me insane the despite the fact most of them have been here they still seem to love to inject the damn Yankee sense of humor that does not get it. Besides your now former or soon to be former competition in your time slot 680, has the herd, since I am not a sheep I do not herd well. Good Luck to ya buddy.
Some of the stations here just do not get it they shoved Steve McCoy out of the door, they brought in some crew of idiots which was supposed to be Mark Canov’s swansong and it was they rode that crew to the lower rankings, and sent the Steve and Vickie fans trying to find them on another station, or a station that they could identify with.
So when is some station going to wake up and start an FM sports talk station that can be heard past Peachtree Road and Lenox, it is so hard to get my Grundig receiver to work in my car to hear the weak signal broadcast by the sports AM stations.

If Steak thinks he’s good at radio, which I admit he occasionally is, let him have his own morning show w/ someone else- why ruin the best team/show 790 ever had, the bottom line? Of course it would fail, but the point is to return an element of when the station was better. The only time Dimino is any good is with Nick Celliini- let them have their own show back sans Steak, preferably in a non morning time slot

I have to comment on this. I used to produce that show, was an intern there at the start and with the show for more than a year. Al could not have been more accurate, that if anyone in blb reads what he stated, I bet they will think it came from me or another former producer of the show. My guess is Al is either a former intern of the show, a friend of an intern, a former/current producer, or someone who works/worked there with knowledge. The only thing he’s wrong about is that I wish I got at least $50 a day from them. I can personally attest to the effort and work BA put into the show. I do agree with some of the statements about trying too hard and drowning out Woolvey in conversation. Though several comments are just down right mean spirited, but that’s the way of things. We enjoy blasting those who have it better than us who we think have no right to. BA & I often didn’t see eye to eye on ideas for how things should be done or things that they should be doing instead, but I know he always wanted what he thought was the best for the show. To all those saying, I can do as “good” as him, I dare you to put up and try it. Send a demo to Edgar or any other Pd and see what they tell you, if you hear back that is. Running point on a show, hell even being on-air talent, is something that is so easy to say I can do, but not as easy to actually do. Okay, now having said all that I will say, that was a show I honestly would not have listened to if I didn’t have to, (actually most zone shows have become that for me and now that I don’t have to I hardly ever listen to them). I agree about the uga stuff. It was a joke when I was producing the show, and with the producers who followed me when we talked, that at least once a week we would have to have a show devoted to Georgia football. It was an absolute must. Btw, having come from a family that was blue & orange (my dad, and two of my three aunts having gone to UF as well as Grandparents who lived in the heart of Gator country) and being a Tech guy, you can imagine how fun those shows were for me. I do think he was forced out, and I have no inside information confirming this but as someone commented earlier “you don’t leave a radio gig on your own” unless it’s to a better radio gig, and I do think he is taking the high road. To those that say he detested teaching, you must know a different BA, because the one I knew left a job he liked for a chance to pursue his dream job, something most of us would have done.
As for all the stew bashing saying they are racists? I can say they are not, though even I have to admit there are times it seems Doug hates white people, but I do agree there are times they play the race card when it really shouldn’t be played, but to me that makes them ones who cry wolf not racists. Jesse Jackson, now he’s a racist. To those who complain that they are not dogs or poodles and get all worked up about it, get over yourselves, seriously. As a white guy with a lot of 20 something friends both white and black, I can tell you, we don’t call each other dude or whatever thing you called each other, it’s “dawg” though I have never called a girl/woman poodle nor do I know anyone who does. Not going to get worked up about it though because it’s not any dumber than calling a girl chick. The show does cater to a different crowd, but that doesn’t mean it sucks (the Arsenio Hall intro is a bit much and dated IMO), and money making wise, it’s probably the only thing 790 has left. To those who commented that used to listen and don’t now (which I fall into), I agree with everything they said. The show started going down even before it went national, but it has really gone downhill after Shaggy was canned by sporting news (not 790 to those who blame them, as sporting news has complete creative control over the show when it started syndicating them and thus has control over who produces it, not 790). Also, off the air, Ryan is very well spoken, do you really think he talks like that all the time? There is a reason he’s starting an acting career. I will say though, that for the love of all that you hold dear, how Roger or whoever the exec prod is, can continue to allow Jazz on the air is beyond me. You want to talk about nails on a chalk board. Unfortunately for me the few times I’ve tuned in to listen to the Stews have been when she’s on, and the dial can’t change fast enough.
As for all the other 790 bashing, some are on point, some are not. And to clarify something I’ve seen numerous times on this thread and others, neither Chernoff nor Oliver was fired. Matt wanted more money and a morning drive spot (which he did do when he first got to 680) when his contract was coming up for renewal, and Kang was never under contract during the time he left (which for the life of me I don’t know how management would allow that) my understanding was he was getting paid per show, which is why he was able to be on-air pretty much the next day on the fan after leaving the zone. As for tizzle, they did do him wrong, but that’s how management there has been the past few years and honestly how this business goes, just something those working in it have to be used to. Yes, they are cheap (and I can rail on about that but won’t as it serves no real point other than making me sound like a bitter former employee which I’m not), and that cheapness, whether because of St. Louis or not is really coming home to roost. Don’t get me wrong, I loved my time and most of the people there, but I do not miss the cheapness of management one bit and am happy to have moved on to other things. I had to say a few things because BA was getting unjustly ripped on things he shouldn’t have been ripped on here and a bunch of the other misconceptions I’ve seen posted in the commentary on here and on other blogs.

That show was plain dribble. Not sure what pictures Woolvy has hidden in a secret safe at his house but seriously, who would hire this guy? He’s got to be related to Steak. His sports knowledge is iffy and after all these years he still sounds like a rambling scared little boy on the air. RE @Mike: Don’t really listen to the Stews much anymore. I wouldn’t say it’s bush league more than I would say FM Shock Jockish. It doesn’t seem surprising considering they’ve done similar stunts like that in the past. Generally, if a name being touted on their show is too big to be true, 99% of the time it’s not the actual person. They should have done something to infer it was a parody, either by reflection of the voice or the use of quotes, but since I didn’t hear the tease I don’t know if they did or didn’t. From comments I’ve read, I assume they didn’t or if they did it was poorly executed and listeners failed to pick up it wasn’t really Obama. It’s a shame, because now it’s just another instance of crying wolf and you know what they say when you cry wolf too often.

As I said that was a show I would not have listened to if I did not have to. Those I have issue with are the ones saying he didn’t prep or put effort in, nothing could be farther from true. The personal shots like fat ass and the like which are just mean spirited, as I said those are people jealous he was doing something they wish they could do and felt he had no right to do it so it makes them feel good to rip on him.

I’ve never heard anyone who could talk as long as Brandon Adams and say abolutely nothing worthwhile. But then again he admired Rush Limbaugh so what would one expect? With blowhard teachers like him it’s no wonder that our school system is a mess. Can’t believe he going to get back in that line of business – poor kids. His show is unlistenable with him and Jeff W. I find it interesting how many people quote Rush Limbaugh in their posts. I question how many have acutally listened to Rush at all. I’ll bet that the vast majority have never even listened to a word he has ever said, yet they are quick to castigate him along with the sports talk radio hosts in question. Beyond pathetic. If you don’t like something at least have a serious foundation to stand upon rather than a B.S. spoonfed position from someone else. You are losers.

Next to The Bottom Line, this was the best program on 790 the zone. Period. They made me laugh which I believe is part of what sports talk radio is supposed to be about. Sad to see them go.

It looks like Jeff W maybe gone or is going back to weekends only. He is not on this week, I don’t buy he is on vacation. I don’t think got his TV gig renewed this year with RAYCOM, since ESPN has all the broadcasting rights to ACC football. The RAYCOM broadcasts will be using ESPN staff.
It is looking more and more that 790 is on its last legs. Soon as Mike Bell goes, Steak is getting ready to turn the office keys to the bank.

I agree with Brad. Really surprised at all the negative comments about this show. You always knew they would be discussing something relevant about our town’s sports. I also liked the fact they had sincere passion for the local pro teams as well (not just UGA as most have said). And like it or not this is a clooge football crazed city of which UGA is the biggest show in town. You have to talk about it.

UGA is not in THIS town. Only Brandon Adams would try to argue that point. The most illogical, irritating, irrational, smug SOB I have ever heard. His idea of making a point was to repeat what he just said (word for word) 3 times in a row, without a breath, and without any possibility of someone interrupting him. I can see it now. His teaching style: Kids, Hitler was not a bad guy HILTER was NOT a bad guy HITLER WAS NOT A BAD GUY!!!!!

brandon adams had the dumbest opinions on sports i had ever heard. and jeff is just horrible, stumbling, idiot. every show seems like his first one. no wonder the ratings were horrible. our office never turned 790 off so we had to have our ears bleed from 11-1 daily. one down and one to go.

No, I believe he met her when he was still married to his first wife…cough cough, she worked at the station….just sayin. How bad is steak? He reduces two legitamite sports talk radio personalities, Cellini and Dimino, down to his Moe and Curley. Just unlistenable! Horrific! Embarrassing!

Had been travelling and on vacation and just noticed Brandon was gone. As I mentioned in the other thread about 680 passing 790 this is good for the station. For those who are ripping on Woolverton, how would you know how good he is, he never got a chance to talk. Not only would Brandon Adams come into every show with some crazy theory or point which was going to be his point for the day, but he was so insecure he wouldnt allow anyone to disagree with any of it or shoot holes in the obvious weaknesses in his theories. If they did he would interrupt them constantly and he started every sentence after that with “I think you would have to agree” I felt bad for Woolverton, he seemed like the guy on a date with a crazy chick in a restaraunt and he was afraid she was going to freak out in public.
As I said, I have listened to 790 since 01 and this was the worst show they ever had, no matter what they do it will be better. You have to have a little give and take, you have to have guys disagree every once in a while and give each other a hard time. One guy coming up with mostly crazy inane theories and the other guy being forced to agree all the time is terrible radio.

Some very neg comments about Steak and The Stews. B & W were straight bland period. I turned many times from the show. To the Stew haters: A black person can be the only black at a place or an event…no problem that guy adapts. Switch the situation, 9 out of 10 white guys are out of place. That’s why you either love or hate the Stews. It’s like Buckhead or Bankhead. I’d rather chill in Buckhead, but I can still feel comfortable at a bbq with good people in bankhead. And on and on…But please stop the racist stuff. We’re just a little different.

I liked BA.. how the hell can a dumbass like Mike Bell stay on with 790 and BA leaves? No one here can tell me Mike Bell is worth a damn.. he is bar none the worst radio show “host” I have ever heard. He’s not funny, though HE thinks he is(which makes it worse), he doesn’t know his sports, etc etc etc. PLEASE get rid of him..

I was not a huge fan of Brandon Adams, but I think he is jumping from a sinking ship. At some point, when you continually make outrageous and ignorant statements just to get a reaction, people will begin to think you are actually ignorant.
790 seems to be heading down hill rapidly. To their credit, they have apparently done some legit consumer testing and surveys recently, and the overwhelming response was to get Steak Shapiro off the air. Off air or on, he is incredibly arrogant and condescending. I have heard he suffers from ADD – if so please medicate yourself or get off the air. Steak is a less talented, more annoying version of Chris Berman.
790 does have some decent talent remaining (Dimino, Cellini, Bell), but I am increasingly changing the station to 680 and keeping it there.
Finally, please back-off on the excessive teasing before commercial breaks. This often feels forced and many hosts forget to follow-through with the material after the break.

While having a little more inside information than the average listener, I can honestly tell you (like some others have said) that the show never had a fighting chance (no producer, no support from management, etc) As well, there is also a religious bias within the station as ALL of the management are of the Jewish faith and only 2 on-air employees ARE NOT (BA and David P). I’ve heard many behind the scene conversations that have spoke of that point.
Jeff Wolverton’s job is secure simply because his wife is the financial manager for the station (as well as Jeff is Jewish). I’ve been told on countless occasions that Jeff NEVER put in any prep for the B and W shows. In addition to that, if you ever heard BA do a show with anyone else (Steak, David, Bo, Nick, etc) you understood how good Brandon was.
As I once heard Brandon say in a conversation… Sports talk radio is NOT about promoting your “superior knowledge” about sports as much as it’s about being able to generate sports conversation that causes the radio listeners to both THINK and RESPOND. That’s why the show failed!!! Brandon would present a “strong” opinion (much like a “Kincade” does), but Jeff would NEVER try to give an opposing view. No disrespect to Jeff, but he’s the one responsible for the show TANKING. It falls on Steak’s shoulders if he can’t see that.
But as I said earlier… even if he does recognize it… he’s not gonna do anything.
Good luck, BA!!!

Glad to see Brandon gone, lets hope David is next. I always felt you came off as a know it all, and talked down to your listeners. Also it sounded like you had marbles in your mouth. I am sure you knew you were going to get fired so you bailed on your partner, again I am not surprised.
Good day Steak, Good day…..
LOL what a joke.
