LA Times: Turner tries to smooth things over with Tyler Perry over ‘Boondocks’ parody

6a00d8341c630a53ef0134851edea2970c-500wiAlthough Tyler Perry has not said a word publicly, insiders are saying he was might upset by the “Boondocks” parody of him that aired June 20 on Turner Entertainment’s Adult Swim network. Making it more awkward: he works closely with TBS on “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne” and “Meet the Browns.”

Aaron McGruder, the creator of the “Boondocks,” created a thinly disguised Perry-like character named Winston Jerome (apparently, the original name was too close to Perry so execs insisted he change it.) In the episode, Jerome, who dresses up like Madea in his plays, used religion to cover up the fact he is gay.

The Los Angeles Times, using unnamed sources, got some inside scoop on Perry’s reaction:

Soon after the episode aired, Perry got in touch with executives at Turner including entertainment chief Steve Koonin and Phil Kent, the chief executive of Turner Broadcasting. Perry complained loudly about the episode and even threatened to rethink his relationship with the company, people familiar with the situation said. A spokesman for Perry declined to comment.

Ken Sunshine, a Perry spokesman, declined to me, too.

Tim DeClaire, a spokemsan for Adult Swim, declined comment as well about whether the network plans to air that “Boondocks” again.

Who cares about Madea, does anybody even watch those crappy shows anyway? Thought what the Boondocks did was funny, oh and don’t we have freedom of speech here anyways. If someone wants to make fun of a public figure, there is no law saying they cannot. Get a clue.

Geez, why give McGruder the satisfaction?

The Boondocks come across more than a soapbox tirade than a genuinely funny, entertaining show.

What a wuss…..He doesn’t like it when the satire is directed his way? Wuss. You’re a millionaire and entertainment power broker. You should not get upset about this. You just knocked yourself down to Sarah Palin levels. The quality of his shows and movies make him a candidate for ridicule. They are demeaning and stereotypical to blacks.

Saw the episode, much respect to Tyler for working his way out of a troubled background. I think Perry has just as much right to defend himself and personal beliefs as McGrueder does to take jabs at it. With his money, influence, and connects, I’d think he could create some creative comebacks. That’s true freedom of speech. Think about it!

It’s comedy damn it! Aaron spoofs EVERYONE.. I guess it’s only funny when it’s about someone else… WHATEVER! The fact that Perry is getting so upset about something AM does to dozens of other celebrities should indicate something . If AM didn’t hit close enough to the target, Perry might have just brushed it off. We all know about the stigma gay black men have to live with in their communities. It’s the reason the AIDS population is so high in the black community.

I agree with you (Hindu Elvis Pimp) . . . a few of his movies has a message but for the Madea stuff he portrays her as a woman that solves problems by using a firearm and using abusive language as a way to communicate. He portrays a black woman in the most demeaning way. Bad influence on the younger generation . . . and the us as a people of color(s).

I have never heard Tyler Perry say out of his mouth that he’s gay! The problem is we always want to assume something about people we don’t even know, just think if the shoe were on the other foot how would we react!!! Just because you come from the background that Tyler Perry comes from does not make you gay and neither does playing a woman in a play or movie………. Several men have played a woman on TV and on the big screen and their not gay. I think we should all focus on the man in the mirror!!!!!!!!!

Tyler Perry is living in a world of fantasy if he really believes the public accepts his posturing as a heterosexual male. He is a 40-something year old man who dresses in drag, has no marital history or known prefame girlfriends, no children, he’s a multimillionaire, and he lives in Atlanta with all of those attributes. Further, he is quite effeminate. Those things veritably scream gay. And there’s nothing wrong with hat. The problem is Perry clearly is not being honest with himself and the whole world knows it.

How long did he think he could perpetrate the I’m-so-holy-but-I-dress-in-drag thing before people began to publicly discuss his sexual orientation? At the end of the day, he’s still got support and he’s making millions BUT he needs to do a little soul-searching and find the courage and honesty to face the truth. The rumors and innuendo aren’t going to disappear. You can’t hide in a closet when the doors and walls are exposed!

Meh. Turner has got what they wanted from him, it is a matter of time before his shows start to decline. If he is going to be a big baby and cry when someone makes fun of him, let him take his shows somewhere else. Boondocks like South Park takes shots at EVERYONE. If they are taking shots at you, you are either making a lot of money, of acting like a jerk. Either way you are moving the meter so just smile and say nothing. I am sure there are plenty of washed up actors who wish Boondocks was making fun of them.

I normally don’t even watch the boondocks, but after the so call media uproar and blogging about T. Perry in the epsisode, it only enticed me to download the show and watch it. I found it funny and entertaining.

I was surprised when I watched one and immediately became a fan. He has some wonderful movies out, that’s why he’s so dang rich. Madea can be hilarious too!

Tyler can defend himself if he chooses. Personally I think he should just move on. I don’t care if he’s straight or gay, he’s funny and I think he has a great heart.

Tyler Perry’s television shows are nothing but coonin’ and bafoonin’, so why is he upset that someone did a parody about him? I have friends who get upset when I say I don’t like his shows and are ready to fight! Why? Is that how you see yourself? Well I don’t. If he is gay, so what….It doesn’t change how I feel about him. The Boondocks is satire-based comedy. They make fun of EVERYBODY on that show. It was just a matter of time before they got around to Tyler Perry. If he’s going as far as calling executives at Turner instead of LHAO, then he’s being alittle soft to say the least.

Tyler, lets be real with yourself and the fans! Your female emotional outbursts are legendary and the 21st century is not the place to remain in the closet. Lets look at the Media/Madia characters for a quick minute.
1. They depict the matriarchs of the Black Family as a cigarette smoking, pistol packing, curse like a sailor degenerate(this is what white america and the world see and hear)
2. She is shown as a supposedly “Good Christian Woman” that provides wise counsel for young black girls and women
3. There is the gospel music that tends to lead the audience away from the garbage makeup of Madea and the rest of the cast.

The plays really have nothing to do with ministering to the people but more about how religious satire and comedy can be integrated to form a style of entertainment that catapults the author into a man made success story that bolsters the same old tire story “I had a bad upbringing by a loving momma and my daddy was a drunk and abusive to me.”

WAS DAD HARSH ON YOU BECAUSE HE SAW THE FEMALE TRAITS AND ATTRIBUTES BUT MOMMA COVERED FOR YOU WHICH LED TO THEIR MARRIAGE BEING TUMULTUOUS FOR LACK OF BETTER WORDS??

Personally I saw the show and couldn’t stop laughing. I know people who have worked and currently work with Tyler or “Mr. Perry” as he instructs you to call him at the studio and they said it was dead on.

It’s not a matter of free speech necessarily…it’s about Turner respecting a business relationship with one of its biggest stars and business partners. Do I think that it’s OK that that the Boondocks creator did a send up of Perry regarding free speech???? Sure, but, it’s commercial speech that’s involved. Perry has a right to feel the that network doesn’t have his best interests on the table when they allow lesser “talent” to spoof Perry. Turner was all about the might $$$ and couldn’t care less about the the hired talent going after each other with knives..and Perry has a right to be angry about it.

As an earlier poster said, maybe he should simply count his money and shut up…or better yet, he should make a movie “spoofing” all of the Turner and Hollywood execs that he’s has to do battle with over the years…as well as all of his artistic detractors (re Spike Lee, Aaron McGruder) with the mighty chips on their shoulders

UM, let’s look at this from another perspective. He works with this company on two shows and is obviously not happy with the parody. If you have a working relationship with people and something of this nature comes out, and you find it offensive, then you will respond. Tyler is a successful man who is doing his thing, and frankly if I had a business relationship with someone and they did something like this against my wishes, without my knowledge, approval, or whatever, I would probably have something to say too. Sure to us the Boondocks episode is funny, but if a person feels personally attacked by people they trust, they are going to be upset.

Tyler Perry has the right to be upset about the parody. And who are we to attempt to judge him. Whether Tyler was gay is gay or not, or was in his past, is none of our business. TP needs to stop! The more he reacts, the more he is proving that the Boondocks episode must have had some truth to it. Anyone who knows anything about black gay men, will know that TP fits the mold:

1) the glamorous and powerful female friends he surrounds himself with (where are his “homies?”),
2) his religion (a lot of gay men are religious or struggle with it),
3) his Madea movies (the cross dressing, the ubber sexy men he uses in his movies, they are always written about Black women and their struggles to overcome bad Black men, the ‘motherly’ advice from Madea)

I can’t say that I haven’t enjoyed or appreciated TP’s movies, because I have. But the more he tries to defend himself, the more people are going to speculate. His best bet is to brush it off and keep it moving. This hissy fit is not a good look.

While I respect the origins of the story coming from the L.A. Times (not mediatakeout again), I’m still wary at the non-named sources in this day and age. As you can see, this little blurb has taken a life of it’s own in the court of public opinion. Look at yourselves, arguing over rumor and innuendo. AM wrote a funny storyline, TWO WEEKS AGO. Another episode, funnier than this one, has come and gone but you fools are still crying about this one. I think TP is somewhere in his vault, counting his coins ans ignoring the whole thing.

I love the fact that Arron McGruder says the things that we all are thinking… and its doubly funny in cartoon format. Most black people don’t like stereotypical, shuckin’ n’ jivin’ characters even if it is a black producer. Tyler Perry is just as much at fault at continuing the status quo for black actors that so many tried so hard to kill. Kudos to McGruder and Spike because we need more criticism of black actors and producers. Just because they are successful and black doesn’t mean that they are above critique.

Let’s see, where does he stand legally, since the character Winston Jerome only bears his likeness. McGruder never once used Tyler Perry’s name. It seems to me, that technically Tyler is acknowledging that McGruder is correct – i.e., – he agrees that McGruder was referencing him as evidenced by his desire to sue him. I know Perry understands satire, which is what his portrayal of Madea is by default. Some people are much better at dishing out than they are at receiving it. We are learning more about Tyler than we knew because of this.

Robin Williams, Martin Lawrence, Cedric the Entertainer, and countless others have dressed up and their orientation was never questioned. Tyler Perry has always believe that he was fooling the world as long as he condemned the gay society. I’m glad he’s being exposed –he has made money disowning gays in plays and tv while bending over in real life. I can’t wait til L. Gross, A. Payne write a book! The price of fame can be extremely high. It usually costs them their privacy and their pride which are two very valuable commodities. I think Tyler knew the cost once his plays started taking off and his name became mainstream. So the ridicule he’s receiving now was something that I’m sure he was “waiting” on eventually. If not, he must be foolish. But I’m almost sure that’s not the case.
With gay characters on almost every show and movie that comes out these days, most people can spot a gay man (more so than a gay woman). So why is everyone (including Tyler) surprised that his “Tea has been spilled.” (and for my LGBT community members….yall KNOW WHAT I MEAN!) LOL. can I get a amen!

Is it that important to you if he is or is not gay? Accept people as they are and you would find life much happier than what you are portraying today. There is a wide range of entertainment. You can select what makes you happy and please don’t rain on others if you don’t like theirs. Both are crazy funny in their own ways and neither one is better than the other because people like what they like and it’s only important to them and not you.

Mr. Adams – creating opportunities? Then why doesn’t TP cast a REAL older, plus-size black woman to play Medea? That’s what I don’t get. I definitely don’t care for the character; some of the movies are pretty good. I don’t watch tv. Everybody cry for TP…how about the fact that AM’s art is just as impactful to those who look at it for what it is. Yes..its satire and way over the top, but there is a very large audience for his work as well. The Boondocks began as a little known comic-strip that has grown into a show, WHY, because its funny as hell. Looking at the obvious and making it grand. For those who are protecting TP, please do yourself a favor and watch the Boondocks. You will find that the central character Huey is the messenger of the show, who comments on all the funny foolishness that occurs around him. Essentially, the show has similar messages as the work TP produces minus the spiritual attachment, some folks are just too dumb to see past the punchline. For the record, and to stay on topic, TP should be ashamed of himself for trying to pull a power move to get another Black Man’s work removed or changed or whatever the case may be. The joke was on him this time and he is “gay” for not appreciating the artistic freedom even if he disliked the personal touch…He makes his coin the same way!!

Why are all these black women still supporting this sword swallower?
Would you support your man for being a bone smoker? This is why
I want a woman who isn’t a typical black woman: no music ringtones, tattoos
that have be shown to everyone(screw your jailbound baby daddy),an
unnatural “love” for effiminate men, an unnatural love for dope dealers,
an unnatural taste for skin-tight clothing, an unnatural desire to accept
the worst behavior from blacks.

If my grandmother behaved as the untouchable “TP”, I wouldn’t be here
because my grandfather wasn’t attracted to masculine women/effiminate men!!!

I suggest black men continue our plan of making something of ourselves,
and get a white or asian woman to share our lives. I will never be with a
woman that thinks that Perry and his “messages” are normal, and the rest
of us are abnormal. This is most likely why we get white women when
we get a chance!!!!

That episode gives even more credibility to the comments Spike Lee made last year about the characters of Tyler Perry. It was a shame that Perry decided to respond to Lee’s comments at the NAACP awards when he bought his way onto the stage to give his rebuttal to Spikes comments.

Perry is a very petty (gay) man who has created his own reality with his monty. Between he and Oprah – both of them need to be honest with their sexuality. What’s the big deal – just say what you are.

Of course Tyler, in all likelihood, is gay. But as a fan of the Boondocks and most of Tyler’s work, I found that “Pause” episode to be offensive. Not necessarily to Tyler per se, because his Jesus pimpin’ from the closet ways needed to be spoofed. But with all the homophobia in the world and the black church world in particular (Tyler’s main audience), I felt it irresponsible to paint a portrait that could be misconstrued to be a representation of ALL black gays. Sorry to say, but we are not all so desperate for sex that we’d start a Christian Theater Cult just to get laid. Puh-leeze. I like McGruder, but on this one he can suck it (No homo).

No one watches Tyler Perry’s coon-tastic television shows anyways. He’d be doing Turner a huge favor if he took his talentless television shows off the air. McGruder boldly revealed to the masses what many of us discuss in our social circles – Tyler Perry is in touch with his feminine side. One can only wonder why he’s SO upset. What does Tyler Perry’s sexuality have to do with anything. It’s HIS business and noone else’s unless you are laying up with him. Tyler Perry has put a lot of black actors and actresses to work, so I admire and respect the man. McGruder hasn’t done anything but put on a mediocre show.

Just because someone gives you “work”, means little, it she be gainfully employed, or a prosperous business. The real issue that should be addressed by Tyler Perry is OBESITY. The people that I have seen on his shows look as if they ate a fourth of the world! Those Browns are the classic clinical pictures of fatal heart attacks and strokes. Now, is that really funny?

Tyler, Girl…its 2010 you can be gay and successful. Gay Black Men are your second largest support group next to Single Black Women. Just go on Oprah for an hour…both drinking a glass of Barefoot Moscato and with some cold Fried chicken and a piece of red velvet cake…and talk about about really why you can’t get married! thats what we do on a saturday night!

Do you pro-perry supporters have jobs? Perhaps, you guys
should understand that you have bills to pay, children to support.
If Tyler Perry(insert anycelebrity) isn’t helping you with this,
why the hell are you guys protesting the “haters”? Why can
Perry convey any idea of Blacks that “he” sees fit,any
opinion, any left-field concept “he” chooses. No one else
can do this,or else we’re haters or racists(black people
can be racists too).

Thankfully, this is last post on this idol who is playing with
the minds of the weak, gullible and desperate! Remember folks,
if you ain’t paying my bills, I’m not arguing for you!!!

I’ll be doing something this weekend TP won’t, spending time
with MY children.

Do I think Tyler is Gay? Maybe. Is he super feminine?Hells Yes…The bottom line is that the stigma that comes along with being a (Male)closet Homosexual far outweighs that of an openly Gay person, especially when 70%(estimate) of your income comes from the “jesus holly rollers”. I think above all else Tyler is more concerned about how his money stacks,at the end of the day.
Perhaps, Tyler needs to look in the mirror,I am sure there are “Madea’s” out there that don’t like being stereotyped as gun toting, fist wielding, over weight, highly aggressive, uneducated, law breaking, ghetto ass old ladies either, but too bad they dont have Kent’s # over @Turner.*sigh*
The Boondocks is a good show.It gives balance to this whole damn debauchery we call entertainment .

W_O_W, For the record, I don’t care if Tyler Perry is gay, not an issue in the least. What is the issue is that I hate his tv shows, and was only mildly moved at less than 30 percent of his silverscreen abortions. No doubt Ive found myself flippin through the channels and hit a TBS episode of House of Pain or Meet the Browns, and to this day can’t find one character that I identify with as a black male. However I am a HUGE fan of the BOONDOCKS! Every show has made me laugh, most all of them have made me think, (further than just a public service announcement- don’t smoke crack, practice safe sex, etc)lol The BDKs is and over the top satire people, all the way to brass tacks of animation, does anyone see the reasoning of the “Anime” style NOW? Everything in the show is excessive. Essentially TP and AM do the same thing don’t they.Could the tv watching community take a live action version of the boondocks, say starring Lil JJ and Bobby J. Thompson? F**k no! Why? Because its easier to accept these jokes from a cartoon meant to push the envelope. The images that we portray as people are the fuel for their artistic inspiration. Were any rappers up in arms the last two seasons during the Gangstalicious fiasco? And Im quite positive that show hit home to some people. Fall back folks, AM has been doin this stuff for years in the comic, his comedy is edgy and fun without losing a lot of substance. However TP is a recycle artist with no REAL variation in his works. That crap should have never left the theater the FIRST TIME! Do any black people see themselves this way?

As far as the sexual orientation of anyone goes, peep this… Riley is a character that finds almost everything and everyone “gay” but in the G-licious finale, ironically found himself to be “The Gay” I don’t know AM is homophobic or a closet homosexual himself, all Im saying is if we parallel characters behavior to the writers that create them we could say this same thing about a lot of people couldn’t we. But in the end that kind of logic is weak, and wholly inaccurate.

Bottom line: Everyone gets exploited and we are all subject to ridicule by someone…you’ll heal Tyler Perry, you just need more scar tissue.

BOONDOCKS FOREVER!

I agree with your views on the Boondocks! I am a fan myself …I think AM writing and spin is Genius to say the least. Riley character displays the ignorance we as just plain ole’ people have inherited over generations of mis-education and the result of years of suppression. While Huey’s character knows better and tries to do better, thus THE MESSAGE!!!!!! If Riley says some out the way shhh, its because we all were thinking it,and he is the only one with the guts to say it…Can’t understand what the problem is with that?

Obviously angry and unemployed. Seriously, get some exercise. Being unemployable is no excuse to be such a laxy fartwit, posting inane crap all day.

As the late great Arsenio Hall said, “It’s a black thing. I don’t get it.”

Boondocks is stupid, (at least the cartoon was the few times I read it, never saw the show) and anything Tyler Perry has done is stupid. It’s not geared to me and I don’t blindly support his stupid crap because I’m black. Oh wait, I’m NOT black.

Didn’t Tyler Perry cheat some contractor or something out of cash because he, Tyler Perry, is so big and important now? We see “how he rolls.”

Just a classless piece of dung. Apparently the Boondock author thinks so too. I may have to pay more attention to this person. He obviously has intelligence and my first impression was wrong.

it is his business if he is or is not gay. the problem is that many people think that it is up to them and that the way they see the world is the way it should be. this man pulled his self up from being homeless to be a rich and i mean rich man. now the haters are mad because they do not have what he has.tony curtis, milton berle, flip wilson, martin and many more . jamie foxx played wanda on in living color, the hatred and racism in this country is so bad i can only hope it will change.if tyler isn’t saying anything about this then why is it a problem. 1 gays who want well known people to get political power often claim people. 2 others who have thier own problems want to put people below them so they csn feel better

Personlly to me it doesn’t matter weather he is gay or not the problem i have with Tyler Perry is that while his movies and plays are entertaining and teach strong values and belief, they are overcasted by sterotypes, ingorance and fundementals of outlandish behavior which potraits African-Americans in a negative light. Which isn’t good for African American culture .

I saw the episode and it was funny as hell. I don’t and can see why this man is so bitter. It is obvious that Tyler Perry is gay and flamboyant. The Boondocks show is one of the most creative shows that I have ever seen. I will boycott Turner if they even try to cancel this show.

Tyler Perry’s movies are just not funny. Black people go to see them in droves simply because there is a black cast. The characters are either stereotypes or so thinly written a soap opera wouldn’t feature them. How he made his money is a mystery to me. And as for being gay, who cares?

Adult Swim is one of the few “independent” publicly accessible sources of satire in our country right now, with the exception perhaps of the Comedy Central threesome (Southpark, Stewart, Colbert).

Atlanta should be very proud to be associated with that threesome. And all of us should defend it vehemently. Comedy is the only truth we have right now.

Freedom of Speech? I use to watch the “Boondocks” when it first appeared. After that first season, it hasn’t been funny. Aaron knows by doing this, he will appeal to a different audience (young white guys who sit around posting comments all day), therefore, attempting to get more viewers and better ratings. If any writer talks about EVERYONE, it would be Seth Macfarland! Aaron, for the past season has done nothing but criticize a certain group of people. I’m not a fan of Tyler Perry (movies, tv shows and plays), but I do recognize the great things he does in the community. Like the time those minority kids (Blacks/Mexicans) in Phili were told to get out of a swimming pool, because the white parents didn’t want them swimming with their kids. Well, Tyler took every kid that was there to Walt Disney World, all expenses paid. Aaron? He’s running around making crappy shows. The Boondocks is not funny anymore.

Btw. who said that anyone broke a law? Tyler asked two executives for a simple explaination. Besides, did you hear anything come from Tyler himself? This is all speculation and the MEDIA has you telling people to get a clue. Next, you’ll start talking to yourself.

Oh, what a huge loss to society at large and black culture in particular if the minstrel show currently going by the title of “House of Payne” got yanked off the air. Perry clearly doesn’t understand that the larger issue going on in that episode was that McGruder was aiming at the hypocrisy of the black church. They laugh and laugh when he cross-dresses as Madea in those chitlin circuit Jesus morality plays, but see how they treat real life transvestites and LGBT people in their own community.

two words for mr perry. thicker skin. The boondocks is a parody and satire of, about and for Black American culture. We have the likes of Paul Mooney, Eddie Murphy, (the late) Richard Pryor, Chris Rock and (the late) Red Foxx who have all made comments simillar to those made on the boondocks. Mr. Perry should realize that stereotypical behavior, situations and events breed stereo types. He has made a heck of a lot of money capitalizing on those stereo types. He put himself out there. He writes the plays, movies and tv shows (with all the same general story lines). And most of all he is the one dressed like someones ignorant grandmother on stage. I guess its all fun and games till someone says the joke is on you…

[...] Following the episode, titled “Pause,” Turner execs reportedly were busy trying to smooth things over with Perry. [...]

First and foremost, I do NOT CARE if Tyler Perry is really gay or not. It makes no difference. However, Mr. Perry has ABSOLUTELY NO RIGHT to try to get The Boondock’s episode pulled simply because his feeling were hurt. Obviosly, Perry does not know the meaning of the word SATIRE. All of the crap Perry puts out is offensive on soooo many levels and since I am usually offended by his works, I simply do not watch them. I absolutely hate that Perry usually portrays his black female characters as overly dependent, hooping and hollering Jesus freaks who are ONLY happy when they find a man. Perry needs to “man-up” and be able to take a little critism.

That man has too much going on to worry about some some show (with not even half the ratings of his) that is satiring him. To be SATIRED, you’ve got to be doing something right. And I’m sure that’s exactly how TP looks at it. Gay or not. Bafoonery or not. He’s doing HIS thing. And whether or not a bunch of internet losers think he’s gay isn’t stopping him from doing it.
