This past weekend, Kelly Stevens came back to his old haunt B98.5 without long-time on-air partner Alpha Trivette. It’s not a full-time job but it’s a step back into the game after two years unemployed.

He sent me this email:

I was asked to return to B98.5 to help with voice tracking on the weekends and to do vacation fill in. It’s part time but I’m grateful for the opportunity to return to what I love. It will be odd being on the air without Alpha (first time in over 20 years!) and in many ways it’s like starting my career all over again. I have to remind myself that there are a lot of us veterans of radio that might never be able to get back on the air, so again, I must keep being grateful for the chance that I’ve been given. I still hold out hope that Alpha and I can find something together…but it’s been sometime now and I’m ready to get back to doing what I love best…just thought I’d let you know what’s going on. Hope you’re doing well.

And how about this for irony. Kelly & Alpha spent nearly a decade on B98.5. Their prior job: Kool 105.1 in Denver. Kelly & Alpha were replaced by Steve McCoy and Vikki Locke. McCoy was recently dumped by B98.5 and is now at… Kool 105.1. Small world!

“It took me a little while to learn all the buttons again,” he said. “Everyone was very welcoming of me coming back.”

Alpha in the meantime is acting in plays. He sent me this email this morning about his upcoming drama “Splinters.” (though I can’t make it because I’ll be in D.C.)

Here’s my latest play at the Alliance…it is a VERY dramatic role…unlike the comedies I’ve played before.  Please let me know if you can come and when…feel free to pass the invitation along and bring friends…hope to see you.
Alpha

Kelly said he plans to see Alpha in the play on Friday.
Financially, Kelly said he’s hanging in there with voice-over work and had some savings to live off of. “I live near Spaghetti Junction, not under it yet,” he said.
Alpha is still seeking a radio job.”We’ve been looking everywhere,” he said.”We just haven’t had any luck yet. God bless him.”

kelly and alpha were great…I have nothing against steve or vicki or producer will, but if that isn’t cutting it ratings wise…please bring them back

Even though I like the music at B98.5, when they replaced kelly and alpha, they lost one of their daily listeners. Fortunately, two of my other favorites reappeared when 106.7 brought back together Randy and Spiff. I have never been a Steve and Vicky fan. They just don’t seem to be genuine. It seems to phony and scrpted.

I liked Kelly and Alpha, but after “nearly a decade” it was probably time to stop billing them as “Atlanta’s new morning team.”

What was the “big” news on 680 the Fan about their future yesterday?
I can’t find a reference to it anywhere, and their prgrammng hasn’t appeared to have changed.

The overhypers at 680 are now the home to the 2011 PGA Champiuonship in Atlanta. Big Whoop!!! Golf is not a sport that translates well to radio. Each shot is unique and better on television. I can figure out what 10 yard pass to Roddy White looks like or a double to right Center by Chipper but a ball in the 16 fairway rough is not that visual to me if you do not know the layout.

PLEASE bring Kelly and Alpha back. They are wonderful together. They never had to try to be funny, they just were.

Sorry, but I hated Kelly and Alpha’s show. Always the same old bit. Talk about some story in the news and then invite people to call in about it EVERY day. It was really some stupid things too just to insult people’s intelligence. Of course, maybe K & A weren’t smart enough to know the difference?

It is really GREAT news that Kelly Stevens is back on the air! His natural wit always makes me smile and brightens my day. And, I’ll be very happy when Kelly and Alpha are both together with a permanent position in the Atlanta area.
P.S. Larry: “Hate” is a pretty strong word which indicates stupidity on the part of intelligent people who use it.

At last a warm and friendly voice with a truly professional, commanding, authoritative, and intelligent presence has again landed on the scen! However brief a period during the week this presence may be around, it is welcomed back!
