Aaron McGruder’s ‘Boondocks’ mocks Tyler Perry

Aaron McGruder (left) mocks Tyler Perry in last night’s “Boondocks” episode on Adult Swim. He portrays the Perry-like character as a closeted gay man named Winston Jerome. Jerome creates a homo-erotic cult which features Jerome as a cross dresser who resembles Madea.

Grandpa, hungry for fame, agrees to be in one of Jerome’s plays and “renounces” his family and “Ice Cube and all his works.”

He even kisses Jerome in the stage play in hopes of getting in the film. He also thinks he’ll be able to attract a coterie of hot “Beyonce”-type groupies. That doesn’t happen. What’s worse, Jerome actually DOES want to sleep with Grandpa. So he bolts.

There’s a scene in which “Rocky Horror Picture Show” fans will appreciate. An in a funny visual gag, Jerome dresses Jesus in a cute blue sweater on the cross because Jerome thought he was cold.

The only odd thing is I don’t think there’s any real evidence Perry places inordinate numbers of light-skinned hottie black guys in his plays and movies. (Jerome does!)

Adult Swim is a sister station of TBS, which works closely with Perry and Ice Cube.

This episode is hilarious.

LOL @ Winston Jerome wearing a tight, pink V-neck muscle shirt.

Good thing I watched it last night, because WorldStarHipHop left out one of the main scenes.

The whole part about the “typical Winston Jerome Story” is missing in this clip that is posted. I don’t know how they left it out.

Check it out at the 3:26 mark:

It’s not the amount of light skinned men he casts it’s the roles they play.

I get that McGruder wants to do biting satire, but he seems to forget the humor component. Instead we get unfunny bashing with no hooks or punchlines.

Michael is not funny because of the Punchlines (which I found rather funny and funnier watching the second time around). Or is it not funny because you love Perry more. Most people will say the latter.

It is clever, witty and pushes the envelope…over the edge lol

There is a reason that Riley is on the show with Huey. There is a reason granddad is on the show with Rufus. There is a reason that Tom (Uncle) is married to his wife (who loves black culture and Usher) and their innocent bi-racial daughter is on here too….
The entire show is a composite of urban America, specifically black culture. If any of you actually watch Boondocks (and not just this TP episode) you would see and KNOW that huey represents the thought that isnt bound by culture. He is free. Free to think, do and be. But, he is the only one that is free and is often ignored by his family and even friends for it. He is like Willy Wanka in the scene saying “no. stop. dont go there…” and is unheard and the repurcussions occur because everyone failed to listen.
Riley is the kid immersed in today’s culture and as such he always uses the N-word. He loves hip hop but to his detriment. Their granddad is obsessed with fame and fortune…
Aaron is doing one hell of a job showing us where we are today.
1. Lil’ Scrappy is on murder charges and may get the death penalty. He is a key example of the “role models” Riley loves
2. Remember the “balloon kid” whose parents used him to try and get a reality show. Or the Salahi’s who crashed the state dinner to be on a reality show. These are examples of the depths granddad would go to to be famous.
3. The Real Housewives of NJ one of the family is $11M in debt and when I read the article today they actually said well if he didnt spend like that we wouldve have made it on the show.
4. Jamal Bryant being on Omarosa’s show as a “spiritual advisor” and claims he wants to make sure she is equally yoked but NEVER talked about God, Jesus or the Holy Spirit. He never asked any of the guys if they were saved or even Christian. What DID he do? He brought prenups. Because a prenup trumps a bible any day, right? WRONG. He is a pastor though, right? And was excited to be on a show to promote his “collar” but not his Christ.

I love Boondocks because it shows us the ignorance in the world and in Black America. Call it what you want but this show is a wake up call.

And, let me add this, this particular episode wasnt a mock of Jesus. It was a mock to those who USE Jesus to promote their agenda. someone on here said it best. CHRISTIANS endorse TP (not all but most) and his cross dressing. But, will tell RuPaul to BURN IN HELL. What is the difference? Oh, Tyler does it for Jesus…or in the name of Jesus…please. Aaron wasnt making fun of JESUS (also known as Yeshua, the Bread of Life, the Light of the World, the Resurrection…) he was making fun of the jesus (lower case intended) that is being used to endorse this foolishness TP is doing and this is the same Jesus that parades around most of our pulpits today.

And, another thing…Aaron isnt homophobic. He is pointing out the obvious. ALL of these people who are in the closet need to come out. Stop lying, pretending, fronting, living a lie. Be you. The real you. His point of reference is hollywood and entertainment and truth be told that is where most of the closeters are. They promote one thing and live another reality. But, stop fronting and just live. We all see it anyway…and that is what Aaron is saying…WE ALL SEE IT ANYWAY SO STOP LYING!

[...] Mark Anthony Neal writes about Boondocks creator, Aaron McGruder taking on Tyler Perry. I love how Neal breaks things down in both an intellectual and readable way. And also, how he calms people down, because people are tripping like McGruder attacked President Obama or something. I mean, if Barack ain’t Black Jesus, Tyler Perry ain’t even Judas Iscariot. But you know, now that I’m thinking about some of these movies he makes, maybe he is. Click on this link to watch the Boondocks episode Neal refers to. [...]

@ Ms. Lady

Only one correction. His name is Ruckus not Rufus. Lol. But I agree with everything you said though. I absolutely hate when people use Jesus as a way to justify what they do. I’m a christian, but that does get on my nerves how some of us can be hypercritical. I loved your RuPaul example btw. That right there can win almost any argument against someone who tries to justify what TP does but condems any other crossdresser. I don’t agree with that life style, but i don’ think it’s right to bash one person for doing it but applauding another because he does it “in the name of Jesus”. Good post.

Aaron McGruder is brilliant to say the least. I so appreciate his ability to artistically deliver content that appeals to the greater intellectual sense. I believe he is spot on in this “Pause” the “Tyler Perry Spoof. While, I care not to pass judgment on Tyler Perry’s life or lifestyle, as I have no direct knowledge of what it is, I sincerely can appreciate the reference that McGruger has so accurately expressed in this satire; that Perry, as many others has used the “name of Jesus” to promote their own personal agendas and amass great wealth, and unfortunately, many a gullible “Christians” have heralded his work as some type of saving grace. I do also wish to agree with the RuPaul comment made earlier.. One dawning drag wear in the name of Jesus is no different than one who dawns drag wear in the name of Prada. Great job, McGruder. Keep them coming.. Maybe we’ll wake up one day before it’s too late!!!

so, Ms Lady, “All the gay people should come out?” So they can be subjected to the scorn and hatred and contempt of people like you?
If Tyler Perry did “come out” a lot of his fans would turn on him like attack dogs, the same way a lot of the rest of you already do – if he really is gay, its no wonder he keeps it a secret.

also, how do any of you know Tyler Perry is “using” Jesus to promote some evil sinister agenda? Maybe he really believes in christianity just as many of his fans do. THere’s no dark conspiracy in his becoming a sucessful (in terms of revenue) moviemaker – he makes something a lot of black people obviously want! You can say his movies and plays and tv shows arent very good (I dont think they are either)
but pompous psuedo-revolutionary critiques of his work arent going to make any difference to the people who love his productions!
Look at movies like “Friday” or “Soul plane” – his movies are certainly no worse. I dont see why, when the subject of Tyler Perry comes up, there’s always so much hatred and animosity – none of you who despise him with such intensity know him personally, so what’s YOUR problem?

I think TP kind of feel the way Esther Rolle would have if she had seen him hunch his shoulders to hide his neck and repeat the : damn, damn, damn, : thing he did in his play. Mocking a character is fine, but when you use a persons inperfections or what some see as imperfections, there will always be someone around to pick up on it.

The Boondocks is a groundbreaking show. It just might be the funnest show on TV. Tyler Perry is a homosexual man. I’ve always thought so. The reason why he’s suing Aaron McGruder probably has to do with the gay sigma that surrounds the Black Church. Black Christians are the most homophobic people in this country. The average Black church goer will tell you that homosexually is a sin and it has not place in the house of God. Which I find funny because everybody black person knows if your church choir doesn’t have a gay director – that church choir is probably not that good!

Personally I have no problem with Tyler Perry. I hate his movies because they don’t appeal to me. The only time I see Tyler Perry movies is when my girlfriend drags me to theater. But I do give him credit the way he markets his plays, movies, and TV show (or shows) is brilliant. He found his niche – his target demographic which is black church going females. His rags to riches story is remarkable. He’s a great role model for the black youth. However the Boondocks making fun isn’t a grounds for a law suit. The Boondocks poked fun Oprah and President Obama. If Oprah and Barack not upset why is Tyler Perry upset? He’s gay that’s why and he doesn’t want to be exposed as being gay. If he’s not gay it wouldn’t bother him! If I was McGruder I’ll make another Winston Jerome episode and go harder than I previously did.

Keep it up Aaron McGruder! The Boondocks is the funnest show on TV since The Chappelle Show!

The average brain-washed television watcher – and definitely your average TYLER PERRY FAN, is not going to understand what this episode is truly saying…

In fact, I think this episode was for TRUE CHRISTIANS before anyone else.

I don’t consider myself a JESUS FREAK, but I am definitely spiritual and Jesus is my Lord and Savior. When I watched this for the 1st time, it struck a “spiritual” cord with me.

I looked at how dude was USING JESUS as a “producing partner”, just as the dialogue stated…and how freakin’ DECEPTIVE AND EVIL that is!!!

The GAY part…. clearly dude is gay. Everyone in HOLLYWOOD knows dude is gay. So that was a given. No need to dwell on it. And if you have traditional Christian beliefs, As McGruder seems to have, you think that’s wrong anyway…. NEXT!

The bible says “what’s done in the dark shall come to the light”. Maybe this is the start of God exposing HYPOCRITES AND LIARS for who and what they truly are. God doesn’t want His people deceived, and if you ask me, TP’s rise to the top was a “little fast”….. wonder what favors he had to cash in to get Hollywood to finally notice him. A BOYFRIEND IN THE INDUSTRY PERHAPS? (at least at that time – probably not needed anymore.)

Straight up – to me – this episode may as well have been a SERMON!

j c hammer, why shouldnt he sue if he feels his character has been slandered and defamed? That’s what rich powerful people do!
This wasnt making “satirical” comments about Tyler Perry’s work, or commenting on the “hypocrisy” of the black church – this was a personal attack on Tyler Perry himself! Commenting on his movies doesnt bother me – I dont think they’re that good either! But attacking him personally is something different!

What does Tyler Perry expect? If he is a “homosexual” (which is his choice for whatever reason) dressing as a woman trying to teach MORALITY, then he should expect people to take pot shots back at him. Tyler is rich yes, but he is rich because he exposes NEGATIVE SEGMENTS OF THE BLACK COMMUNITY. Those negative segments are what keep people divided and why they move away or whatever.

when I saw this episode I burst into laughter and then to tears because we as a people will accept anything and anyone that we feel has it going on at the moment no matter what message they’re giving off. Hats off to McGruder for being an excellent writer and unafraid to voice his opinion…but let’s face it, TP should fire his staff and make nice with his fired employees that know things…lol
