Monica Pearson loves to give advice to younger folks. So when V-103’s Frank Ski and his wife Tanya invited the veteran WSB-TV anchor over to their home Sunday to have lunch with six promising female high school seniors who had won $1,000 scholarships, she jumped at the chance.

She told the women not to get caught up in guys obsessed with bling. “As my mama said, the raggedy ride is better than the dressed-up walk!” Plus, “Don’t judge a book by its cover. Read it!”

Tanya Ski, at one point, noted, “I’ve never seen you wear the same thing twice!”

Pearson grinned and said, “You just didn’t notice. When you’re used to dressing from Goodwill as a child, you learn to coordinate!”

The winners were Ariane Robinson, Nanisha Martinez, Brittany McGrue (all from Alpharetta High School), Cinnamon Murray (North Springs High School), Daria Leroy (Independence High School) and Darion Forrest (Benjamin Banneker High School).

The other “legend” Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas on TLC gave some advice and stories to the students. She has a desire to put together a TLC movie, which sounds very intriguing. “It will be great for so many people to see all the things we had to overcome to get where we were,” she said.

She also talks a bit about her upcoming reality show “What Chilli Wants” on VH1 starting April 11. “I’m dating from my point of view,” she said. “I have a laundry list of what I want from a guy. Most people say I’m too picky.”

Where are all the white people? Guess they don’t need any scholarships…they’re all rich!

Mike Hunt – you think white people are the only educated and well to do people. you need to open your eyes. This is 2010….

BigBoom, I think what Mike was trying to say (albeit poorly) was that all the students were african american, and that must mean that the Skis don’t think white children need the money.

I on the other hand, applaud this effort. Any guidance that can be given to young girls of any race by women who are pillars of their community, or successful with their careers, is well worth the effort.

I applaud them for organizing this.

So white people are complaining about diversity now? LOL!!!! That is biggest laugh I’ve had in awhile. Where was the diversity when schools integrated and the parents took their kids out and sent them to private schools or kept moving further out from the city? Where was the diversity in the church’s? When black’s started to attend your church’s and yall split up the church and left. Diversity my FOOT!

It’s only 6 young ladies from different areas of the City. It’s not about race, it’s about helping these youngladies. You losers are always trying to find something negative when someone is doing something positive. Why don’t you hand out some scholarships to kids you feel deserve it that are not youngladies of color. LOSER!!!

affirmative action

Sigh…ya’ll are hilarious… matter what the topic, race ALWAYS creeps into it….why not just applaud the young ladies for their accomplishments and leave it at that….and by the way, I don’t see any of ya’ll with any foundations offering any type of scholarship…so when you do that, then you can fuss about what others do with their time and money, ‘k?

Also, Lord please allow her to see her inner beauty and let her hair go back to its natural-born color.

Are you kidding me with the ignorant, preposterous comments? This has to be a joke. If you would have read the article and paid more attention to the detail of the name, maybe you would have realized that Martinez is not a predominately African American name. I guess that’s not good enough for you either. All the young ladies are not of completely African American descent. The hosts Mr. and Mrs. Ski are not of full African American descent either. Check the facts before soundig like an ignorant fool…..The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge;
fools despise wisdom and instruction. Proverbs 1:7

no white’s applied b/c it was on the Frank Ski African radio show. No self respecting WHITE person would listen to that. Didn’t he have a side kick that trash talked whites at one time? And when has Monica ever given to wite charities. She, Tucker, Oprah, Jackson, REV Wright (oh there’s a good one) the blakc man work ethic, the black man family ethic, Sharpton-it’s all about AFRICANS.

Well said war eagle…It’s great to see the blacks who take offence and express their annoyance when they hear whites complain and speak out…but it’s ok when they speak out when they see any sort of racial injustice. The days of double standards are over with!

To War Eagle, please do your research before writing things that are incorrect. My husband and I donate to charities that benefit people of all races and ages, including the Northwest Georgia Girl Scout Council, Metropolitan Atlanta United Way, The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Talent Development Program, The High Museum and Senior Citizens of Atlanta, just to name a few.

Yes, There is a time for all good workers to come to the end of a certain workforce in life. Enjoy the memories and move to something else, try teaching, offering your input and experiences to others. When one’s resume is so very, very impressive from traveling with someone who has received the Nobel Peace Prize, not to mention the interview from Buckingham Palace my, my, you have been where only a few have gone. Congratulations to Monica Pearson with LOVE!
