Whatever happened to… Rhubarb Jones?

rhubarb-Jones-2010

Former Eagle/Y-106 jock Rhubarb Jones today subbed in for Moby on Moby’s syndicated morning show heard locally on South 107.1 in Rome and WNGC-FM in Athens.

Jones has been off the radio airwaves for two years but has enjoyed a second life as a teacher of media management and director of special projects at Kennesaw State University.

“I knew it was something I wanted to do,” he said. “When I first started to college, my first idea was to teach high school history. My mother pulled me by the ear and said, ‘You will finish high school. You will finish college.” (He had me on the air this morning to talk about TV.)

She reminded him, too, that he should have a “Plan B.” Rhubarb took classes at Shorter College to learn how to teach even before his morning show gig had ended.

Rhubarb was the king of country at Y106 in the 1980s. When Moby arrived at Kicks 101.5 in 1990, he took away a big slice of Rhubarb’s audience. It was a “fierce rivalry,” Rhubarb recalled. Moby has admitted to me in recent years that he probably took the battle a wee bit too seriously and would smack talk Rhubarb.

Even after the two country stations were under one owner, their relations remained frosty. It was only after Moby got booted from Kicks and started his own syndicated gig a few years  ago that the two bonded.

“I gotta tell you when I got fired on 29th of February 2008, I got home and the very first phone call waiting on me was Moby,” he said. “We have a terrific relationship. Whenever he wants me to sub in, I”ll do it.” Today, Moby is being honored by the Pentagon, which is why he was not on the air.

Despite the loss of his radio job, Rhubarb continues to run his celebrity golf classic, now in its 18th year. His ability to draw big stars has waned, but he is still buds with Alabama lead singer Randy Owen, who will jam after the golf tournament itself April 26 at the Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta.

Rhubarb’s tournament benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. He has raised more than $3.5 million over the past two decades. Get more info at his Web site www.rhubarbjones.com.

Rhubarb Jones is the best professor I could ever ask for. The dude knows what he’s talking about, and it’s always a treat to hear him when he subs for Moby. Thanks for believing in me, Rhubarb! You rock!

Rhubarb kicked Moby’s ass on the air back in the day. I liked him much better than Moby.

Who cares. Too bad the Dixie Chicks’ tour with the Eagles and Keith Urban won’t be making a stop in the South. But then again, that’s not really a surprise is it?

My rock band played at Stone Mountain Harley-Davidson a few years back and Rhubarb came over and hung out with us. I don’t listen to country and didn’t know who he was, but he was super cool and a lot of fun to hang out with. Really awesome guy!

I had the opportunity to work with Rhubarb at KSU for nearly a year. He’s an honest, loving man who always has a minute to talk to you. He bends over backwards for his students, and wants them to achieve in a cut-throat industry. I know a lot of people would slam him for his nickname, but the man knows his stuff. Not only does he have over 30 years within the industry, he attained his master’s degree from Shorter College. (His undergraduate is from West Georgia) He is someone who I can truly call a friend, and that’s an honor.

By far one of the most honest and knowledgeable professors I had in my time at KSU. You want a professor who cares about his students, look no further than Rhubarb. It was a joy to learn from one of the very best.

Rhubarb was the best professor I’ve had at Kennesaw State. I’m a Business Management major and took his class as an elective and I learned alot of great things while having a really good time. Kennesaw is blessed to have him!

I always liked him but lost a lot of respect for him when Guy Milner was runiing for governor. his radio ad said guy would take away this and take away that and was planning to hurt the farmers of ga. It was a boatload and he wa never the same to me after that. Just like Belinda with Neil Boortz. Since her lawsuit with Crocs, i will not listen. She has riden Neils coattails so much it is sick.

Rhubarb needs to be back on the air. He’s too good not to be heard. Isn’t there any country station out there that needs a great jock with a loyal following? Come on folks, let’s get him back on the radio! We love and miss you, Rhubarb!

Moby – what a piece of work – he is a liar – he says he supports the troops, I doubt it – but I am here to tell you he does support perpetrators of domestic violence – he thought the guy who beat and robbed me was a hell of a guy and I was a “kook” – you see I wasn’t supposed to speak up according to Mr. Moby, He will always be a pig in my book. He’s just a really good liar. Had most of Atlanta sucked into his ACT!

Scott, Rhubarb was helping out his good friend Zell Miller with that promo in his race against Milner in 1994. The only time Rhubarb interjected himself into politics was to help out a friend. You do know that was a campaign script he read?

Congrats to Rhubarb on his professor gig. Had many times where he would be out and about and had many conversations with him over the years. Good man on the radio and off.
