TV news ratings in Atlanta show WSB-TV’s continued dominance

wsb-tv

Nearly four years ago, Atlanta became a “metered” TV market, which means ratings are measured daily using a continuous sample of Atlantans.

ABC affiliate WSB-TV has been the market leader in local news for many years, possibly decades. That did not change under the “meter” system. WSB-TV’s ratings since 2006 have remained remarkably steady.

Since 2006, the Fox and NBC affiliates (WAGA-TV and WXIA-TV) have lost steam while CBS affiliate WGCL-TV has made some gains from very low levels.

WSB-TV in many time slots doubles the second-place TV station, sometimes more. Its strongest news time period is the 6 p.m. news anchored by Monica Pearson and John Pruitt, based on ratings from July 1, 2009 through March 4, 2010. The station at that hour generates a 9.1 rating vs. 4.4 for WAGA-TV (Fox 5), 2.9 for WXIA-TV (NBC) and 1.3 for WGCL-TV (CBS).

For the same period from July 1, 2006 to June 30, 2007: WSB-TV (8.5); WAGA-TV (5.1); WXIA-TV (4.9); WGCL-TV (1.3)

Fox 5’s 10 p.m. news program pulls in its best numbers among all its newscasts with a 5.0 share (vs. 7.7 in 2006-07).

Both WGCL-TV and WXIA-TV pull in their strongest numbers at 11 p.m. And despite the “Jay Leno Show” debacle that dragged ratings down in other markets, WXIA has held its own compared to 2008-09. Overall, the ratings at that hour show a tight fight for second place:

WSB-TV (7.5), WXIA-TV (3.5), WGCL-TV (3.4), WAGA-TV (3.0). In 2006-07, the ratings were as follows (with WAGA airing “That 70s Show”): WSB-TV (7.3), WXIA-TV (4.7), WAGA-TV (3.6) and WGCL-TV (3.2).

Here are ratings from other time slots covering 2009-10:

The ratings at 5 a.m.: WSB-TV (3.5), WAGA-TV (1.6), WXIA-TV (1.0), WGCL’s “Better Mornings” (0.4)

The ratings at 6 a.m.: WSB-TV (5.8), WAGA-TV (2.7), WXIA_TV (2.1), WGCL’s “Better Mornings” (0.7). (Although the numbers for “Better Mornings” are relatively miniscule, that’s up from 0.3 in 2007-08.)

The ratings at 7 a.m.: Good Morning America at ABC (6.2), Good Day Atlanta on Fox 5 (3.0); Today Show at NBC (2.5); Early Show (0.6).

I watch to see the over the top hype whenever there is a weather event. Have you noticed how wrong they always are? They never acknowledge their reactionary forecasts, instead, they pretend it never happened and wait for the next made up weather event.

Also, why is there 2 hours of news every night? The second hour repeats the first hour. Have they considered, as viewers, we don’t care?

For 7pm, the rating for Access Hollywood should reflect WAGA not WXIA. Doesn’t NBC Nightly News come on at 7pm for WXIA or is that at 6:30pm?

And how about Nightline? Doubling the ratings of the top two Late Night shows.

Whatever happened to 11 and 5?
Fox won’t stand for being a loser in a big city like Atlanta.

I’m surprised “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel Of Fortune” aren’t in first place here, since they are
in 1st place elsewhere in the U.S. I’d rather watch Vanna White than Diane Sawyer any day of the week.

I have lived here for 50+ years and you can take WSB-TV news/weather/sports, Monica and her hair to the moon for all I care. The reason they are number one is the number of moronic, losers in Georgia who think WSB cares about them. I don’t believe a word I hear on WSB, even the score of a Braves game. I think they would even twist that up into some wild story.

CBS’s “We Ask the Tough Questions” gimmic is terrible. It’s no wonder they’re getting completely slaughtered in the ratings.

11 Alive’s “Good News” gimmic is trash as well.

Why can’t we just get the news. Make it boring. Make it plain. Boring and plain works!!!!!!!!

WSB Channel 2 tries to scare you into watching their weather forecast. You can mute the television and watch the weathermans increasing gesticulations to see what the level of weather is coming in.

I am a true Fox 5 news watcher. Good Day Atlanta is my favorite. I really think that all 4 of the newscasters on that show gel really well together. It’s not a stuffy show at all.

I love watching Amanda and Russ at 10pm (Russ is by far the most handsome man on the news stations in Atlanta). And, I trust no one but Ken Cook with the weather forecast.

One of the best things about going out of town is NOT having to watch ANY of the local news anchors. Other cities’ anchors don’t do all this foolishness as done here.

Amanda Davis, Ken Cook, Jill Becker and Monica Kaufman/Pearson has gotten old–figuratively and I guess literally. I stopped watching WSB news because of MKP’s silly ad libs and ghetto hair colors. I hear Jovita can be a snot; I love John Pruitt. Karen Greer looks like Monica but without the crazy hair. I don’t like any of the local folks now.

I like Ted Hall, but mostly…bring back VICKIE NEWTON! She was PERFECT.

WSB and Monica SUCK! She seems like a thug in hiding. I love how she changes the hair every night for attention. She has been divorced 4 times. That says a lot about who she really is. They love covering all of the racist blacks too as well as the NAACP. Pretty obvious how they are all major democrats.

Monica Pearson and John Pruitt are to TV news here in Atlanta what Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and the Chicago Bulls were to the NBA during the MJ era. Just like no one won the NBA while MJ was on top of his game, no other TV station has a chance as long as John and Monica are sitting behind the anchor desk.

Kudos to the writers/producers there who really prepare what we see, but I could do without the ad libs and “seen only on 2,” and “we were the first to bring you” and M’s hair BS. @Hurricane,

Don’t forget WSB-TV’s deep bench. They’re constantly and consistently developing new talent. When Monica and John retire, Jovita Moore and Justin Farmer (son of Don Farmer and Chris Curle — two other WSB-TV greats) will be right there to pick up the ball.

I thought this was going to be about WSB radio as well. WSB radio is a waste. What a missed opportuinity with 50,000 watts! And what do they have? Almost a third of their broadcast day is devoted to that loud mouth, oral aggressor Neal Boortz and if that isn’t enough, they have Hannity, Michael Savage, and then they throw in Herman Cain. What a joke!

Very hard to take WSB tv news seriously with Monica and her hair. Channel 5 presents far better news, sports and weather.

Maretta

Too bad Fox 5 isn’t drawing more people; they are really professional. But then, again, they’re about half as old and experienced as the WSB lead team. But the new people WSB has brought own are really impressive — Justin Farmer, John Bachman, Erin Coleman and all those young, new, impressive reporters in the field and young, new weather people. If WSB can keep them, that station will be in good stead for decades to come. But I still miss the professionalism of Amanda Rossiter (sp.). One thing that irks me, however, is that so called tough-question investigative team on Channel 46 — just because you’re rude doesn’t mean you’re asking tough questions — the public is not impressed. Those people need to go back to journalism school and study the ways of the greats of their profession and not imitate rag paper journalism.

It proves that the “all girl news” format at 46 ran out of gas quickly. As others have said, being obnoxious and rude wears thin quick, too. While the restaurant thing might be okay, simply reporting the facts would suffice. Dagmar can only take you so far…then you HAVE to drag in a REAL meteorologist. Give me Feldman or Minton anyday. I’m not much on WSB but it is the best of a mediocre crowd. I agree, the “newer” talent is good there.

Dragon

I’ll never understand why guys are so crazy about this Dagmar person. Yeah, she’s skinny, and looks like she has inflated boobs, but rather ordinary as far as I’m concerned. Most of the Atlanta TV weather ladies seem to be in the “who is skinniest” derby, with old fatty Minton giving up, it appears.

Dragon

WXIA’s ratings continue to fall. February’s numbers were ok becuase of the olympics, but still down compared to a year ago. That is right, even the olympics could not help them. The morning news has been in a free fall for a year. The News Director there has lost the newsroom. Look for more changes to come in the near future, as her future is clearly in doubt.

Lifetime Atlanta resident here, and while all our local stations have ebbed and flowed in my 40 years, this is how I see it now:

WSB — still the benchmark with the best, deepest talent pool. John Bachman, Jovita Moore, Erin Coleman, Justin Farmer, Fred Blankenship, etc. are all very professional. And I trust David Chandley and Glenn Burns with the weather.

Fox5 — a close second, with some good talent, but their field reporters are sometimes kinda over-the-top and too dramatic (Doug Evans, Portia Bruner, George Franco, etc.) I respect Ken Cook and Russ Spencer and Amanda Davis, though.

WXIA — used to be a lot stronger talent-wise, but not now. I grew up in school watching Hal Suit and Guy Sharpe, and they also had Chuck Moore and John Pruitt in the 80s…. now, their talent is so-so and not consistent, and their story selection and order are sometimes questionable.

WGCL — still second-rate talent compared to all the other stations… part of the reason is nobody STAYS there for more than 8 or 10 months. They need to spring for a solid, no-frills, respected veteran news anchor or two. HOWEVER, I will say that Dagmar Midcap is HIGHLY OVERRATED! She is awful! For my money, have Jennifer Valdez do the weather every newscast every day!!! She is GREAT!!!!!!! Smart, competent, engaging, funny, and she has fun with the job… plus, she is the HOTTEST broadcaster in all of metro Atlanta! The channel 46 morning show is the best, and she makes it even better.

All that being said, the TV news in Atlanta suffers from what happens in all big cities — it’s a ratings-grabbing, money-hungry, sensationalistic cluster****. A legit, serious, important news story may get cut so they can get some drama on the air — a fire, a wreck, etc.

That’s why I like reading stuff better.

The ‘tough questions’ gimmick on CBS46 is getting a bit tired. I emailed the station to ask what happens when Dagmar starts to sag, but I got no reply. I’m guessing they put more money buying her bras and sweaters than they do into actual news coverage.

WSB clearly has the best folks, but neither my wife nor I can stand Chuck Dowdle because of that awful voice. We have to switch immediately when he comes on. If I want to hear a sports announcer with an accent like what I imagine most NASCAR fans have, I’ll hang out in a sports bar in Paulding County.

Two things – Atlanta became a “people metered” market in 2006 meaning it gets daily ratings with demographics. It’s been a “metered” market for decades meaning it got a total number but didn’t know who (men, women, ages) was watching and the folks in the sales department care about the who, that’s where you make the money.

Second – way to do a nice fluff piece about the sister without mentioning you’re all owned by the same company. typical.

Hey qwerty — first of all, I know Chuck Dowdle and he is one of the nicest, most genuine people I’ve ever met. Secondly, he’s from the south for God’s sake… why would you want a sportscaster in the SOUTH to forget all traces of his roots? Thirdly, what the crap is wrong with a slight southern dialect? You bashed Chuck, Southerners and NASCAR fans all in one paragraph… way to go, you judgemental moron. Fourthly, you’re married? She must be blind. And FINALLY, if you had half a brain, you’d know that Chuck RETIRED from WSB a month or two ago, so you won’t have to listen to him any more, bless your arrogant, judgemental, pretentious heart….

Go back to Minneapolis or wherever you are from so you can listen to those LOVELY northern accents as they talk about college hockey or curling or boxing or JV basketball or whatever else the crap northern sports anchors blather on about… I’ll take guys like Chuck, Buck Lanford, Ken Rodriguez etc. talking about the ‘Dawgs, the Jackets, the Braves, the Falcons, the Hawks, golf, and yes, even NASCAR.

All local news is news for children. If it bleeds it leads. Most of the local coverage needed can be gotten in 5 minutes reading the AJC online. If you want news that matters watch PBS news hour at 6pm if you must let a news outlet dictate when you get your news fix.

This article completely misleads readers! The fact that not a single network in Atlanta gets a 5 rating for news should embarrass each one of them! WSB may be “king” in Atlanta, but that is like saying a rat is the king of all rodents, they are all terrible! But I guess I should expect no less from a media that too is dying on the vine.

Here’s my 2 cents-
Channel 2:
The Good- Glenn Burns- Great meteorolist- knows his stuff.
The Bad- The Sports Desk- It’s like a revolving door over there. Pick someone and stick with them!
The Ugly- Monica Kauffman- The hair is just too distracting. Very unprofessional to be changing it every 4 days when you are on the air. Time to retire and dye it blue.

Fox 5:
The Good- Russ Spencer- Excellent anchor, very professsional. Keep up the good work.
The Bad- Not enough time devoted to sports outside of Atlanta.
The Ugly- Tom Hayes on “The Edge”- Drama Queen. Hard to take seriously. Plus he’s smaller than the ladies in the chair next to him.

11 Alive:
The Good- Weather- Paul and Chris as mentioned in previous posts do an outstanding job!
The Bad- Something about that studio setup is really distracting.
The Ugly- Fred Kalil- Time to go. Amateur hour is over. Also, not a fan of the way Ted Hall tries to talk all “folksy” to you on the camera.

CBS 46:
The Good- Dagmar. Oh yeah. Sure she is not a meteorologist, but it is working. Their ratings are up!
The Bad- Not enough Dagmar
The Ugly- This station is moving in the right direction, so let’s hope they continue to do so.

WXIA’s demographics are even worse than their ratings. Their numbers continue to freefall. The 5-7am actually had pretty good ratings and was challenging for a #2 position prior to the massive changes it underwent in February 2009. There has been so much change there and all of it has been met with almost universal negativity by the viewers. There is no way to surgarcoat it, WSB pounds all of the local stations. Fox is the clear, but distant number 2. WXIA is the number 3 and falling further back with smaller and smaller numbers, which means continued declining ad revenue, and WGCL, well keep trying guys.

Hey, The First Jeff 10:52pm, I grew up in Tennessee and North Carolina, so I’d say I’m Southern too. But you’re right, I cannot stand heavy Southern accents, and I do think NASCAR fans are rednecks. And probably everyone who lives in Paulding County. Never been to Minneapolis, but thanks for the suggestion — I may visit someday.

Oh, and I know Chuck’s retiring, but he’s still on WSB all the time. Just this past Sunday, he was doing a car show. He’s there, watch and you’ll hear/see. My wife saw with her 20/15 vision (Lasik) and told me to change it fast!
