Project Runway: Season 7, Episode 7: Hard to wear

Who should have gotten auf'd this week?

After a break last week (presumably to avoid competition with the Olympic ice skating finals), we were down to 10 designers.

Designer/judge Michael Kors delivered the challenge in his posh SoHo store.  Anytime you hear “push the envelope” you know something weird is coming at you. In this case, the designers had to create a look as well as a complementary accessory out of hardware store material.

Everything from sheets of metal and copper to buckets of bolts and sand paper were thrown in the mix. Not surprisingly, several futuristic-looking fembots stormed the runway with designer Isabel Toledo (who created Michelle Obama’s inauguration look) and jewelry designer Stephen Webster as guest judges.

On the flipside, Anthony seemed like his mouth was bolted shut because he was surprisingly quiet.

THE BEST

Winner: Jay’s leather-looking pants (left) made of garbage bags were amazing. Punctuated by the belt and blue masking tape, it was a total look of luxury – and his second win.

Maya delivered a head-to-toe look, so say the judges. While they loved her individual pieces, including the creative key necklace, I think the jacket looked like a “Hellraiser” movie costume.

Frankly, Mila is overly predictable. While she did transform the paint tray liners into ablack-and-white dress with movement, I can not imagine a complete line of designs all with graphic color blocks.

THE WORST

Auf’d: Jesse’s painted copper dress made the judges think of the Tin Man from “Wizard of Oz,” a Hershey’s kiss and a dirty vacuum bag. They gave him points for the asymmetry and stitching of the back. While I didn’t like the powder puff skirt, I don’t think he should have gone home…

runwayemilioEmilio, in my opinion, had the absolute worst design with his “Malibu Hooker” (right). And why is it that all of sudden the judges don’t know what really happened in the workroom? He flat out lied and completely ignored the fact that he ran out of material. The bathing suit didn’t occur to him until Tim Gunn suggested it – in concerned jest.

Atlanta’s Anthony landed in the bottom three because his dress was too pretty. I didn’t agree on this one either. But the judges grilled him for not being innovative enough. “Boring. Conservative. Uptight.” This is probably the first (and hopefully the last) time we’ve ever heard those words used to describe the fiery personality. LOL

Loved this episode, and I thought the same thing about Emilio. Usually the judges “call them out” on what really happened in the workroom.

Totally agree that Emilio should have gone home last night. I didn’t think Anthony’s was bad either.

I was disappointed with Maya’s. In the workroom it looked like it was going to be alot better. Not that it was bad. I just thought it would be better. The necklace was very nice.

Jay’s was beautiful. He definately deserved to win. He’s won 2 now and he’s been in the top 3 a couple of times and not won, hasn’t he? I’d say he’s likely to be in the final 3.

I thought Amy’s dress was really pretty. In fact, I like alot of her stuff.

Ya gotta love an overly tired gal at 5 of 11:00, saying to herself “it’s almost over -DON’T FALL ASLEEP!!” …..and then waking up at 5:45 in such a pi$$ed off mood cuz…..I FELL ASLEEP!! Thanks for the update as to who went home. Funny, but when Anthony’s model came struttin down the runway, the first thing I thought was “Oh! pretty! I need to wear more lavendar this summer!!” Mila: Ugh. She’s so boring and her designs always look ‘the same’. I want Maya’s key necklace!!! And finally…. “Hooker Barbie” (LOL!) that was just awful. I think Ping’s backless skirt was more appealing……

I did not think that Anthony’s design was that bad.. I actually like it considering what it was made out of…yes, emilo should have gone home…why do the judges like Mila design without designing….i can do that….

Emilio outfit was BAD!, but he defended the HECK out of it. His overall look WAS uniformed. Emilion should have stayed. He’s a much better designer than Jesse was.

@Sally. I agree. Maya’s wasn’t as grand as I expected and I thought Amy’s multi-color sand paper design deserved to be in the Top 3.
@Amy and Chelley. I would totally wear Anthony’s dress! And I can barely imagine what Ping would have done with this challenge. Too funny to imagine!
@Tlynn. I definitely agree that Jesse was the weaker designer overall but based on this challenge and that piecemeal “bikini”…I’m just saying

OK-If judging by everything they have sent down the runway, I would agree that Emilio should have stayed and Jesse should have gone home. But if you are judging solely on what they did last night, Emilio should have had his tookus handed to him in a sling and been shipped far, far away (to a galaxy where some warrior princess could rock the look).

Hey Q! Could someone figure out why Maya isn’t in the Bryant Park photos that are all over the Internet?!?!? Last weeks loser in there. Jesse is there. Does mean (subtly) tha Maya is the winner?!?!? I seriously doubt it but it’s nowhere to b found on the Net why she’s not at Bryant Park.

@KenBud. I have to admit that I’m not a fan of spoilers but I did a little digging since you asked ; )

Without going into too much detail, 10 designers presented in Fashion Week at Bryant Park so that we would not find out the 3 finalists too soon. Strangely, this included Janeane (who’s gone) but NOT Maya (who is now in final 9). Hmmm….

As a result, many thought Maya was going to be auf’d last month but Janeane got the boot instead. There’s more, but I don’t want to spoil it for everyone ; ) If you’re dying to know, try to Google “Project Runway” + “spoiler” or + “Maya.” I also found interesting article on EW.com … but I just can’t bring myself to read all of it. I need something to look forward to : )
