B98.5 nixes the Steve & Vikki Show

steve mccoy

B98.5 has decided to end the Steve and Vikki Show less than two years after a ballyhooed launch in 2008.  Steve McCoy is out for sure, confirmed a Cox Radio official close to the situation who declined to be identified because he wasn’t authorized to give out such information.

Tony Kidd, Cox Radio market manager, said he wasn’t ready to discuss the situation just yet.

The pair’s contract is up June 30. B98.5 decided to take them off the air early because the soft-rock station had a deadline to give Steve & Vikki a third year. Management has chosen not to take the option.

Steve & Vikki on B98.5

A friend close to Vikki Locke said she has an offer to stay on, perhaps as a solo morning host, starting July 1. She has not made up her mind but has until next week to say yes or no.

If she doesn’t, B98.5 could bring back Kelly Stevens and Alpha Trivette, the former morning team who helmed the B98.5 morning slot for nearly a decade. The team has not been able to find a radio job since B98.5 let them go in 2008.

Steve & Vikki have been together for more than two decades, most of it at Star 94, where they thrived for many years as the source for soccer moms across metro Atlanta. Star, wanting to veer younger, decided to dismiss them in 2007. B98.5 hired them soon after in 2008. They returned to the air in July, 2008.

Management figured they were a perfect fit for the B98.5 demographic, which is older than that of Star 94.

Steve & Vikki have drawn decent ratings but  probably not as good as B98.5 had hoped. Worse yet, the economy took a dive soon after they were hired, hindering B98.5’s ability to offset the higher costs of the morning show compared to the more economical Kelly & Alpha.

Steve & Vikki’s morning numbers lagged far behind B98.5’s  mid-day and afternoon time periods, though the station’s emphasis over the years has been to get the “listen while you work” crowd. And since the new people meter measurements have been in place, B98.5 has done extremely well. It even landed at No. 1 during the Christmas holiday season.

As of late evening Thursday night, the Steve & Vikki show remained on the Web site www.b985.com. Ironically, at 11:24 p.m., about 12 hours after McCoy was told the news, WXIA-TV ran an ad featuring Steve & Vikki advertising a free trip to see “American Idol.” The title said that B98.5 is the “new home of Steve and Vikki in the morning.” Yes, they still use “new” after all this time.

The staff has been informed of the situation Thursday. They will go to a more music format for now, led by producer Will Gara. [UPDATE: Steve & Vikki were indeed not on the air Friday morning and Gara was covering. The show aired from 5 to 9 a.m.]

Though B98.5 has emphasized more music, less personality over the years, management saw an opportunity when Steve & Vikki became available. Arguably, since B98.5 is the only pure adult contemporary station in the market, hiring Steve & Vikki was insurance nobody else would hire the pair and take on B98.5 directly. Indeed, nobody has, though 105.7/The Groove and Star 94 are certainly pivoting toward their audience.

There have been management shifts. Two big supporters of Steve & Vikki when they got there are no longer at B98.5: former VP/general manager Dave Meszaros and former market manager Chris Wegmann.

Steve & Vikki more or less replicated their Star 94 show on B98.5.  Program directors came and went trying to tweak it to their liking. Clearly, it didn’t work out.

McCoy has not returned a call for comment. In 2007 and 2008, McCoy didn’t talk about his departure from Star 94 until he was hired by B98.5.

Our office stopped listening because of the music. Kelly Clarkson all the time. And, how long can it be the “New” home of Steve and Vicki. They are not your problem..It’s your music selection.

What a lame morning show.
Steve sounds like a guy I would never want to know.
His sidekick is “Grandma Diva.”

Multiple comments on this… first of all, any station owned by Cox Radio is going to be a disaster… they destroy anything they touch. They are inept at managing anything. I would not put Cox radio in charge of a little league hot dog stand, much less a major-market radio station.

Second of all, I have enjoyed listening to Steve & Vikki over the years… some of us in our 30s get sick of the sophomoric, frat-boy humor that dominates a lot of radio station morning shows. Some of us are more mature than The Regular Guys crap… we would like something slightly better. Radio programmers seem to forget that the MAJORITY of radio listeners are between 30 and 50… people under 30 almost exclusively use iPods, music on their computers, music on their phones, etc. People from 30 to 50 are the ones commuting to work, working in offices, etc., and THAT group is the majority of radio listeners, NOT a bunch of 22-year-olds… so please quit catering to that age group!!!

Finally, radio programmers, producers and ownership groups need to realize that IT’S NOT 1977 ANYMORE!!! What I mean by that is that radio and TV ratings numbers don’t mean crap anymore, because there are INFINITE choices for consumers now. When I was a kid in 1977, there were 3 network TV stations in Atlanta, Channel 17, Channel 46, and a couple of PBS stations… a half-dozen options. On the radio, there was pretty much Z-93, WQXI, Peach, 96 Rock, Warm 100, Kicks 101, and Y-106… that and 3 or 4 AM stations, and those were your choices. Unless you had a car cassette player, those 8 to 10 stations got 95 percent of the audience. Now, in 2010, there are a dozen more FM stations, probably a few more AM stations, PLUS MP-3 players PLUS car CD players PLUS iPod connections PLUS iPhones… in other words, getting a solid Arbitron number is going to be much harder these days. Besides, radio listenership has ALWAYS been hard to guage… why still base things on an antiquated, unreliable system?

If you have a good, loyal audience, stay true to them… don’t make changes every other year… don’t try ideas all over the board… and for god’s sake, don’t try to compare yourselves to 30 years ago!

The radio & TV world is a different place nowadays… it’s time that media groups and programmers realized that.

Hey, gin, sorry… i am long-winded sometimes! LOL But sometimes you gotta be to explain a point THOROUGHLY.

What B-98.5 is doing is the same as all these other stations… Z-93/Dave FM, Star 94, Project CRAP-9-6, 99X, etc. etc. etc… they wonder why their ratings don’t match up to 10, 15, 20, 30 years ago… and they base ad rates on THOSE stats. You just can’t do that in 2010.

I think if you find a niche audience and play THEIR music (hint to B-985… a few more lost classics and secondary hits from artists in the 70s and 80s and early 90s… a few less songs from 3 Doors Down, Kelly Clarkson, Rob Thomas, etc.)… and if you find some personalities that are genuine and likeable… then you will be FINE. Don’t try to re-invent the wheel… we as an audience just don’t want to hear the same songs 10 times a week, and we don’t want announcers and hosts that TRY too darn hard! Just be yourselves!

Heck, if you guys will pay me and Kittenmommy HALF of what you give to big-time celebrities like Steve, Vikki, Kelly, Alpha, etc. than WE will come chat and play good music every single morning!

(Hope that’s ok that I volunteered you, Kittenmommy!)

Gary & Yetta, Steve & Vikki, Chase & Woodside, Rhubarb Jones…Real personalities, real radio. Z93, 94Q, Peach, 96 Rock, Power 99…Those were the days. Nothing compares.

As for mornings, Jimmy Baron on Z93 is a nice guy but the music is horrible (format flip coming soon), and anyway, DAVE-FM is a suck name for a radio station. Snore 94 is all jangly guitar-rock under the false “Atlanta’s Hit Music” slogan. I stopped paying attnetion to Clear Channel stations so I have no idea what’s on 94.9, and 96.1 had a retard on for a while, right? THA-NOO 97.1 the River is the same 40 songs over and over. B98.5 is out now. I used to enjoy Bert on Q100 but now it’s all fake voice disguiser crap and “How much did Bert drink this weekend?” I hate country and I’m not a homeboy prone to listening to V103.

Maybe the new WZGC will be interesting. How about a current-based Hot AC with Steve McCoy in the morning?

By the way, no offense ot some people, but are Kelly and Alpha THAT interesting? Always sounded to me like two accountants talking at a coffee shop… not interesting at ALL. I am sure they are nice people, but I think they need to find some LIVELY people with personality.

By the way, I like Bob’s comments… I forgot about the Power 99 days back in the mid-to-late 1980s… that was THE station when I was in high school! I miss the days of 1980s Atlanta radio… was beter quality stuff then.

And does anybody other than 15-year-old girls and 22-year-old skater and snowboard frat boys listen to Star 94 anymore? Every time I hear it it’s playing some mind-numbing hip-hop trash or John Mayer for the 1,000th time… I have not listened to them 10 years since they dropped the Friday Night 80s.

I hope Steve McCoy lands somewhere… I’ve always liked him and his personality and he’s really an Atlanta icon… I can’t keep up with new people in the revolving door of radio personalities in the Atlanta market (what was that Morning Mess crap on 94 for like 3 months)?

Oh, well, to each his own.

Nobody has answered my question yet… what is the appeal of Kelly and Alpha? Not being mean, I’m just asking an objective question… why are they so popular? Every time I heard them they just seemed dry, boring and uninteresting… I did not know they sparked such fierce allegiance from people, but apparently they do. Just asking what the draw is for them….

To be honest, you could put ANYBODY in that slot, and as long as they had a lively show, played GOOD music and had quality news, weather and traffic, they would be a good-sized audience of people 30 to 50.

Randy — thanks man…. let’s call the producers and put a show on with you and me! I think we could DEFINITELY do better than 95 percent of the radio people out there in Atlanta!

Hey “Good News!”… what the h*** are you talking about? “Bring in some edgier stuff with more music.” Ummmm, if you want EDGIER and to appeal to the early-to-mid 20s market, listen to Barf 94!!! As I explained before (points to above comments), the whole MARKET for B-98.5 is the OLDER demographic, the 30-to-50 year old audience. We don’t necessarily WANT edgier music all the time… we might want some good 80s classics from time to time (and not the “typical” 80s crap on compilation CDs like Hey Mickey, Come On Eileen, Down Under, etc. We want to hear some lesser-known hits or secondary singles).

And I agree with the posters about NOT bringing back Kelly & Alpha… for all those bashing Steve and Vikki, you thought K&A were entertaining? Sorry, they were as interesting and “edgy” as sliced bread.

I agree with Mrs. Norman Maine’s post…. find some NEW, and younger radio talent and give them a shot… don’t pay a multi-million dollar contract, pay a couple of up-and-comers $60-$70 K for the first year and see how they do. If it works, sign ‘em for longer and give ‘em a raise.

Why would anyone listen to regular radio at all? All the personalities are the same: boring and predictable. For less than the price of a tank of gas you can get satellite radio and have the music YOU want to listen to and a wider choice of radio personalities. How many times can terrestrial radio keep recycling itself? It’s the same “Morning Zoo with Chapstick and Bonzo!” junk that’s been around for 30 years. Do we really care that a couple of overpaid coma-inducing dorks pretending to be 20 years younger got fired?

To Millermoose — why you told me to “get a life,” I don’t know… I agree with you… that’s what I SAID, that these stations need to play some good music, with some news and traffic, and just have someone with a lively personality to provide the segues… I never said anyone needed “2 or 3 idiots” running their mouths for 3 straight hours. In my opinion, that described The Regular Guys, Slapstick Greaseman or whatever his name was, the Morning X, Chris Rood, etc.

I agree that most of these stations don’t seem to be able to “get it” and connect to their audiences… all I was saying is that I feel bad for Steve and Vikki because I have listened to them (not religiously) for more than 20 years… they are a big part of my teenage years, and I just hate to see them come to an abrupt end like this.

I’m not a fan of constant radio drivel, bet it Kelly & Alpha, the morning mess, the creepy Bert show, or … as Chas so eloquently put it … “Morning Zoo with Chapstick and Bonzo!”

Can’t stand Vicki’s whooping laugh, how many times has she “fell off her chair”???? Lame and tired. I have listened to Atlanta Radio since 1970 and it has come a long way but it is much worse than it was when we had less choices. I loved, JJ Jackson, Mark McCain, Willard, Kaedy Keily, Christopher Rude, Larry “Night Train” Lane, Rebecca Stevens, Garry McKee, Craig Ashwood…and many more I can’t remember right now. Never a fan of Steve and Vicki, just too pretentious and scripted for my tastes. Oh well, maybe we’ll get someone new and talented, only time will tell, and NO Tom Sullivan is not the answer.

Jeff

miller, I’ll take your word about Project 9-sux-1 and whatever 105.7 is… I’ll never listen to those stations again. They blew up an Atlanta tradition in 96 Rock a couple years ago for this crap… all they had to do was work some new music in, but they destroyed the whole thing and now play all this unrecognizable music. I don’t even know what “the groove” is…. 105.7 USED to be WGST, with good news and entertainment and sports programs… “the groove” makes me think they play 1970s acid rock…

Speaking of FM stations and sports… would it KILL the Atlanta market to put a freakin’ sports programming station on the FM dial????? If you live outside downtown Atlanta, good luck in getting any AM stations after dark, save for WSB. I was in Marietta and Kennesaw the other night, couldn’t get the Hawks game on 790… could barely hear 680, but it was 90 percent static. For god’s sake, medium sized cities like Nashville and Birmingham have FM sports stations… can we PLEASE get one in Atlanta?

Wow, such venom toward S & V… c’mon people, they are harmless! Sure you may not like their humor, but why all the bitterness? At least they are not crude, offensive and condescending, unlike many of Atlanta’s other radio personalities…

Sure, maybe they are a few years past when they were good, but at least they were committed to Atlanta and did a lot of charity work… and they at least were entertaining at best and non-threatening at worst… I’m just saying that I wish they’d had a final week where they could do a final special show or something…. Steve deserves it for the 30 years of work he’s put into Atlanta radio.

I love the concept of The River, but their programmers must suck! Here is what I hear EVERY TIME I go by their station: Fleetwood Mac, Boston, The Eagles, Deep Purple, Rolling Stones, Kansas, Allman Brothers. Repeat every hour.

With all the great music from the 70s and 80s — a ton of lost tracks, second and third singles, B-side songs — and they play the same crap you see advertised on those “Greatest Hits” infomercials on TV at 3 a.m.? C’mon guys, you can do better than that!

Hopefully B98.5 brings back Kelly and Alpha. For a morning show, they were a great balance between talk and music. I prefer more music in the morning and since Steve and Vicki (which is more talk than music), I mostly listen to CD’s while driving to work.

Actually, talk radio fan, if you read my above posts, I am not at all defending them and certainly not acting as their agent… I am SIMPLY saying that I feel bad that it ended this way… I wish they had mutally parted ways and had one last Atlanta radio broadcast, similar to what they had at Star 94. Just as a native Atlantan, I’m saying that Steve has been a staple of Atlanta radio for 3 decades and I’d hate to see him disappear on some random February Thursday with no chance to say goodbye to the listeners.

I”m just being human, that’s all… not saying they are the best solution. Personally, for 98.5, I thought it would be a good fit… but anytime you have contracts like they have, anything less than dominating the ratings is not good.

I am also just saying that as far as ATL radio morning show options, I like them better than anything else… Kelly and Alpha seemed VERY boring to me, and I always thought S & V were at least lively.

Truth be told, all Atlanta radio stations probably need a big shake up.

Start listening to Dave FM if you’re that sad. It’s 98.5 lite anyway. I honestly don’t know why anyone in their right mind would want to listen to what 98.5 plays on a weekly basis anyway but the Dave channel has quietly mixed the format for the somewhat mainstream/non-fat office worker that doesn’t want to listen to Falco.

At least at Dave you can hear crap like train, Wallflowers, the Counting Crowes and numerous other bands that died in 1997 and should have stayed there. Sorry, I mean 98.5. What’s the difference?

Honest question here…what on earth do people like about 98.5 or Dave FM? A cycle of 50 crappy songs mixed in with Christmas music for 98.5…A cycle of a few non top 40 songs mixed in with B98.5 crap for Dave.

Do crappy pop songs from the 80’s/90’s have that much power? Do you just not like good music? Is the mean just a safe place to limit your music listening?

Radio as an entertainment medium (which is what radio is), is going to have to re-invent itself. The industry should look at it’s history, and remember what it’s like to arouse the imagination of the listeners. Put talented entertainers on the air, and not shock-jocks, and empty headed morons who think they are comedians. I can get music anywhere nowadays, put some D.J.’s on who don’t just talk about what was on Tv last night. That’s not entertainment, just re-hashing of a tv program that I did not watch. And if I did watch it, I don’t need to hear a re-hash of it.! Radio was, and could again be such a great medium of entertainment except for the small minds and limited imaginations of the people in charge of Radio companies today.

God bless both of them, and God bless the brave, good-hearted old-fashioned radio entertainers. I am not sorry to see them go. I was a loyal listener for B98.5 while Kelly and Alpha were there and decided to give Steve and Vicki a shot after the station fired Kelly and Alpha. After a couple of months I grew so tired of them I wanted to puke…..seems they were star struck and all they wanted to do was see how many celebrities they could interview and have on the show, plus their conceited banter was terrible. I finally switched when my wife found a new station and said to give it a try….it was the new True Oldies Atlanta 106.7 and when I first started listening to them, the had Imus in the Morning…didn’t like him at all, but suffered through Steve and Vicki for while. But when the Oldies station brought in Randy and Spiff I became a loyal listener all day longand haven’t turned back or regretted it since….I love the oldies station and will continue listening for a long time….they make my long commute so much fun and entertaining. See ya Steve and Vicki…..

I turned off B98.5 the day that they took Kelly and Alpha off the air. Management then did not listen, listening to them in the morning on the way to work they would always make you laugh. I don’t care what kind of mood you were in they pulled you out and made you smile.
Since then the musid has been crappy, nothing like what they were playing. Management didn’t understand that the soft rock was pleasant to listen to at work. I have notived stores and offices that used to play them have chosen no music since their departure.

What Cox did to Kelly an Alpha and all of their fans was terrible. The only way to redeem yourself is put them back on the air and then watch your ratings soar again. I will never listen to any other team.

I will reiterate some of the earlier posts…For a major market, Atlanta radio is crap. 97.1 is about the only station worth listening to if you don’t like country or hip-hop/rap/whatever they call it these days, but the playlist on 97.1 is getting repetitive. There’s a whole lot more good stuff they could be playing. (Some 80s rock is sneaking in there though.)
But, most of the time I listen to the iPod…some of my playlists could go on for days without repeating anything. There is a serious amount of music loaded on this thing. And no commercials!!

I live halfway between Atlanta and Birmingham. I like rock (from the 60’s to late 80’s) and old and new country. Atlanta radio has no personality at the moment. The comments to bring in Rick Burgess and Bubba Bussey are dead on. These guys could compete with Neil Boortz. Bring back the old 96 Rock & Z93 from the 80’s and you’ll win the 40 to 60 demographic. Dickey Bros. buy the a top 5 station so the Braves can be heard OTP? Try Rock 100.5 for that since the games will be on there also. It makes more sense than buying another station that Cox won’t sell.

The 97.1 playlist is GETTING repetitive? Seriously? It was repetitive the day it went on the air. After two weeks you heard every song 3 -4 times.

Jeff – Grow a sack will you? AWWWW how precious as a teenage boy you listened to Steve and Vickie. Ohh the thoughts of Vickie keeping me warm at night still cloud my fragile eggshell mind.

Steve and Vickie need to use their creativity and fun??? Steve’s creativity I don’t believe extends beyond his ability to sounds so completely insecere and Vickie well uhhh nevermind. PS how do you use your fun?

98.5 is for chicks and gays,(not that there’s anything wrong with that.) I’m 53. 6-10, RegGuys.
All other times, Boortz, Beck, Rush, Cain, Denny and Savage. Yep, conservative. 961 blows
100.5 away. Rock should be hard, always. Reg Guys make you laugh. There’s not a lot to
laugh about these days. I’m also a trucker. My office for 8-12 hrs. is driving the truck. Peace.

As a soccer mom, I do basically like Steve and Vickie…but tend to channel-surf for the music. More music is definitely needed at all ATL radio stations since there’s not a decent host out there. Except maybe Ryan Cameron (WGC alum here). Get a less well-known (but not offensive-kids are in the car too) team that plays a good variety of music, please! Along with several others, I really do miss the stations from the 80s…and that Friday 5 p.m. whistle. Sigh.

On the side – who cares what Vickie looks like, it’s not like 98.5 is a TV program – we can only hear her.

I listened to Steve and Vicki for years when they were on Star 94 and loved them and the music. When they came back to 98.5, I found that while I still liked their banter, I did not care much for the music but that is not their fault. I really don’t understand why some of you feel the need to make such nasty and cruel comments about them. If you don’t like a station, all you have to do is turn it off. Steve and Vicki, I wish you the best.

Bring Back Kelly & Alpha. My entire office, friends and family stopped listening to the morning show when you let them go and brought in S & V. Co-workers were upset with the fact that they no longer had a good radio station that they could listen to while taking their kids to school then coming to work. You never know what was going to come out of S&V’s mouth. Personally I ended up getting an XM Radio for my car and havent’ listened since. Bring back Kelly & Alpha! Thank you.

There’s a REASON these 2 have been unemployed since they were fired. They are corny & awful. Terrestrial radio is CRAP. Debating over the same lame 2 or 3 morning teams in town or whether we should hear more fleetwood mac or the eagles for the trillionth time!?!?! B98.5 should learn they are not the American Idol audience. I’m tired of David Cook, Chris Daughtry and Kelly Clarkson. Learn to mix it up. I like the 80’s weekends, but please quit playing the same rotation.

Each Atlanta radio station has a playlist and they play it to over and over. Get a clue.

Too bad for Steve & Viki. I agree the music selection is probably what killed them. B98.5, dig deep into the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s vault. What you’re playing now can be found in anyone’s CD collection.

I have two questions:

1. If B98.5 starts playing some deeper cuts from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, will Atlanta listeners recognize what they’re hearing? I don’t find much sophistication here, and I’ve lived here over 15 years;

2. If playing deeper cuts doesn’t work, then what will? Maybe B98.5 should conduct an extensive survey and ask their demographic what they are looking for.

Good luck, B98.5. You’ll need it.

I was a big supporter of bringing S&V to B at first but when i heard the new show .. it sucked. Had none of the energy and fun of the Star show. Instead of listening to “friends” it felt like listening to grandparents. IMHO Will Gara is horrible in the role on air. Let him get back to ordering balloons and giveaways, he should NEVER have been on the air. At Star they have a much better side kick who was actually funny. When CBS look Letterman from NBC, they gave him a bigger budget to do more. When Cox got S&V , they told them to do it with less. I feel sorry for both of these fine people .. just unusual for Cox to fire anyone when it’s not Thanksgiving or Christmas time. Again, maybe with more resources and Will not on the air …. it might have worked. If Vicki does stay on look for Mark Arum to be offered a job. He’s been doing a great job on the AM and they never give him a chance. He knows ATL and can be funny at times. No one else in Cox’s stable who has a chance at this (plus the move with save them money). You heard it here first!!!

I will admit B98.5 has not been that great, but it is not that Steve and Vicki are not good at what they do! I do not mean for Vicki to feel guilty if she were to stay on with them, but I just hope she does not do that here in Atlanta since she and Steve have been together so long’ That is just how it is.
I agree with a lot of the folk’s comments, that it is not necessarily the people on some of these stations, just play some decent music! I called into DaveFM trying to hint that they play better music especially in the morning, but………..has not happened. I wish Steve and Vicki the very best. Just know you were the best in “your day”!

I’m a fan of Steve & Vikki but as I read these comments I’m confused as to why so many who profess to listen exclusively to other stations or satellite radio care enough to post comments here. It’s just entertainment, folks. If you like to listen to B98.5 FM for the music then your opinion as to who hosts the show should matter. If not then why would you need to vilify Steve & Vikki just because you don’t care for their show? Change the channel and focus that emotional energy to something that really matters.

It is DEFINITELY not Steve and Vikki that is this station’s problem. It is the music selection. I was thrilled when Steve and Vikki got the B98.5 job but if they are gone then so am I as a listener. I put up with the sucky music selection just to listen to Steve and Vickki. If Star 94 had any sense they would have been trying to woo them back after they realized their HORRIBLE mistake with the “Morning Mess”. Good Luck Steve and Vikki….hopefully someone will come to their senses and put you back on the air real soon….otherwise, I will just wake up to the “buzzing” of my alarm instead of Steve and Vikki and listen to an XM channel on the way to work. Jeff has plenty to say and he says it well. I like so many started listening to B98.5 only because Steve and Vicki continued their morning show after leaving STAR. In 2010 is morning radio shows should be about the music and light entertainment for the working consumer audience. 30 – 50 year olds have the consumer buying power not the i-pod generation who onlu have money to spend becase the 30-50 year olds workd and can give money to them.
Keep it entertaining and keep it about the music.- Steve and Vicki know how to do it and do it well – - – -just fix the music.

Steve & Vikki are great radio hosts and deserved better. I personally turned off 98.5 at least 6 months ago because Daughtry songs were on constantly. (Kelly Clarkson? – not a problem… Add up the Daughtry songs they play daily and you’ll be shocked.) However, even with 98.5 off my radio for the most part, I would tune in to Steve & Vikki in the morning. Your DJs all do a good job, in fact, but your music format is terrible.

Like many, we made the switch to B98 when Steve & Vikki moved there. Never a fan of the station’s music (too bland and limited a playlist) it was still nice to have the consistency of the morning team. Ultimately we left B98, not because of S&V, but because we never could seem to catch the weather & traffic bulletins. S&V were never meant for audiences for Rap, hard rock, or country, but they were a good fit for their target audience: Soccer moms and their families. All those spewing venom probably weren’t listening to them anyway. That is why there are different formats and your radio does have a dial. Find what you like and leave what you don’t like for those who do. Jeff has made a concise and accurate analysis of the state of radio today. Like Wal-Mart moving into a small town, I’m afraid true local stations will be eclipsed by nationally syndicated shows. As a show, they may be good, but losing the local element is not a good thing for radio’s future.

I emailed the station manager complaining that they play the same songs. Of course he said it was to appeal to the listeners. From reading these comments. I guess it didn’t work. I hope they play more classic rock, more variety and fewer songs by some of these new artists with little talent. It must be easier to put together a show by playing the same songs every day.

Cox has not just ruined Steve and Vikki, They have also ruined Channel 2 News. I USED to listen/watch both. All these “teasers” about “upcoming” stuff is doing nothing but filling up air time with useless information–to the tune of 20% of the shows! I quit watching Channel 2 because I only got about 10 minutes worth of real news and I quit listening to Steve and Vikki because Cox forced them to do so many of these teasers that I was hearing the SAME teaser From Steve, the news gal, and from Will. Of course, I also got tired of listening to all of Will’s stories about his gay lifestyle. Personally, I could care less about his lifestyle and all the things that go on in it. I think that a radio show is the completely wrong venue for all that.

I was surprised to hear about S&V leaving the station – I have enjoyed their show since they joined B98.5 – even the News Gal and Will and his “lifestyle” stories of his crazy cousin Tim (if they are true). I have had the option of turning the channel or station when I don’t care for something – sounds like Greg G’s radio dial doesn’t work –

Life brings changes – are you paying the same amount for a bottle of water as you were when you were growing up – (doubt water was even for sale then) – yes Changes.

Accept what is given – and GO ON with your life – else you’ll be STUCK in the Past.

Even though S&V were not on B98.5 FM this morning – I listened – it was actually nice to hear different songs that I not heard on there station before. I’ll listen again tomorrow and maybe for longer –

I wish the best for Steve and Vikki. If they re-appear then they just might get me as a follower – I listen to a station because I enjoy their entire format – not just to listen to a set of voices.

Matt’s point about FM Talk is right on the money. I stream 99.7 WTN out of Nashville very frequently to listen to Phil Valentine and that station has been a consistent Top 10 performer most of the time. If a mid-size market like Nashville can make FM Talk work, Atlanta can also.

Also, Atlanta could use an all-news station, especially as most other Top 10 markets have well-known 24-hour news stations.

I also agree with Mrs. Norman Maine’s comments. It seems that every time there is a shake up and major radio personalities go bye-bye, the solution is to bring some former DJ back. There is a lot of young talent in Atlanta. Tim Orff, formally of DAVEFM, was never really given the opportunity to shine. At least he has a good time on air. After Orff’s unceremonious removal, DAVE “brought back” Jimmy Barrons. So, how has that gone?

When I moved to Atlanta 5 years ago, I found Kelly and Alpha on 98.5. I enjoyed the mix of music and talk. It was all good to me. I was sad when they left!! I gave Steve and Vickie a try. I never heard them on Star 94. I’ve not been impressed at all with them or their show! Most of the things they do are just not funny and they both seem rather annoying. But I’ve also not found a show on morning radio that I enjoy!! There is nothing good on the radio. I too get tired of the same old songs played over and over.

It was my understanding that Kelly and Alpha always wanted to do more variety but were held back by Cox. Perhaps it’s time to let them lose and see what they can do!!

This is an opportunity for B98 to really change and give the people what they want. And goodbye Steve and Vickie!! Glad to see you go!!

Ok- Everybody here blames Cox Radio for being so evil. Last year, it was Clear Channel that was so evil. People- get real! TV shows come and go all the time. The same happens in radio.
As for Kelly and Alpha- I am hoping Cox learned from their past mistake with those 2. Hell, anybody can build a radio show around spouting off a headline of the day in the news and then taking calls for 2 hours on the air about it. They did this every single day. It got old really quick. Their format might be best suited for AM stations. It would be nice if an FM station in Atlanta might actually play some music in the morning instead of insulting our intelligence!

I have loved listening to Steve & Vikki over the years. I guess I will have to start listening to XM or let my kids have control of the radio in the mornings (UGH!!). Was glad when they got rid of Kelly and Alpha, don’t bring them back. And please, don’t give us 30 to 50 somethings some group like the “Morning Mess” to listen to, we are a bit more mature than that crap!

Wow, so many hateful people here. Thats why I liked Steve and Vicki. Turn on my radio in the morning and made me smile. I dislike the music on B98.5, but came over to mornings for Steve and Vicki. I grew up with them, They were like family. Looks like I’m heading back to Star. I did enjoy Cindy and Ray when they used to do afternoons, so its time to get to know their morning show.

I switched to XM several years ago and have no need for FM radio. I can listed to the decade or mix that I want without commercials and without FCC oversight. Yes, I pay for this service, but it is WELL WORTH IT!

If B-98.5 wants to out-perform other stations, you need to get Tom Sullivan with Vikki or either dump the entire morning format. Kelly and Alpha are lame and there is a reason no one has hired them since their departure from B-98.5. I agree with the comment that Cox Radio couldn’t manage a little league hotdog stand…..if you want to be at bliss with your radio, subscribe to Sirius XM.

I listened to Steve and Vicki through high school and college. I was glad when they came back to 98.5. But I realized pretty quick that if you didn’t spend every evening in front of the TV, you wouldn’t understand the hype of their show. I was sick of the whole morning show talking about Idol, 24, Sex in the City, etc. I hated the hollywood gossip, Vicki might as well go work for the Enquirer. As far as music goes, it seems as though the whole music library was Kelly Clarkson and Nickelback. And please stop with the stupid producer Will and his boy Kirby stories.

Give the Atlanta Listeners something or someone interesting to listen to.

Siriusly XM – Tom Sullivan – he has been “let go” more than most Hollywood husbands – why would you bring something like HIM back in the public? Jay Bird – you must be a biggot – (not that there is anything wrong with being one in YOUR world) – but who needs YOU and WHY would you listen to a station that you didn’t like (S&V were only on for 2 years, you had plenty of time to stop listening)? Kelly & Alpha and Steve & Vikki were both hard working reliable radio host. You need to get into XM and out of the radio market.

I have to say I love listening to Steve & Viki. But the music on 98.5 could REALLY use a good vamping up! The only time I listen to that station is/WAS in the morning with Steve & Vicki. And, I agree with Jeff to a great extent. Viki has a very infectious laugh and that is what I need in the morning, not crude & rude. I don’t know about the hosts prior to them on 98.5 because I didn’t listen to them so I can’t say they were better or not…..just that I do like Steve & Viki and hope they find a new home here in Atlanta soon.

First off, I will miss S&V. It was obivous that there show had little to no budget to begin with. When they were on Star 94, they had much better promotions. Second, while I enjoyed Will stories, he could not take the place of Tom Sullivan. Yes, the music was repative and boring. For those who want Kelly and Alpha back. Why did B98.5 get rid of them to begin with. Im sure it was ratings. The above article mentioned nothing about S&V ratings, just money. To WSB Management, I won’t be here for your new show. In much the same way your former Kelly and Alpha fans switched. The same way I switched from Star when you brought S&V over.

I grew up listening to Steve & Vikki and will miss them very much.
I do agree that the “uninvited guest” was probably the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.
It might have been funny once. I listened to my iPod on the way to work anyway, but I do like to hear the news, traffic, weather first thing in the morning. Randy & Spiff are on the oldies station, guess I’ll give them a listen. They seem to be less annoying than any of the other morning shows.

I hate that S&V got the axe without giving them a chance to say goodbye to their fans, but that happens with other radio personalities. On the air one day, gone the next, without an explanation. Maybe they were let go due to their frequent, embarrassing screw-ups with their contest gimmicks and call-ins, ie…
1. The “Kate dates 8″ thing, in which they unknowingly set her up with a married guy, and then his wife in Texas finds out. She gives S&V, and Kate, hell, (embarrassing all of them) when her husband was the liar.
2. The “Valentines Proposal” thing in which one former breast cancer survivor pours her heart out and proposes, to have her boyfriend put her off. And the guy who proposes to his girlfriend, who ends up breaking up with him on the air.
3. The time they had an exercise freak’s wife call him up (on the air) and ask him to come home to spend time with her. He sounded clearly pissed and she sounded humiliated. I don’t think that on-air phone call did anything positive for their strained relationship.
4. I know there are several other humiliating calls , but I can’t recall specifis right now. I just think, even though they may have been trying to do something fun and ratings-grabbing, Steve and Vikki stuck their foot in their mouth, and did some stupid things without thinking them through. Who wants their relationship problems escalated and played out on the radio?

I called to comment on something a couple of times and Alpha answered the phone, he was short and rude, no personality. I hope Steve and Vicki stay together. Well, Connie doesn’t seem to read posts very well. In my post I mentioned that I have already changed both my radio AND my TV tuner to something other than the Cox stations. My feedback here is just to let Cox know WHY they are losing some listeners, if they actually care. I actually did write a similar Email directly to the VP/Market Manager of Programming at B98.5 and received a very nice but very canned reply. At this point I know that they have heard my assessment. What they choose to do about it will determine if I ever tune in to B98.5 or Channel 2 again for more than just a passing channel surf.

Why don’t you wait and see what transpires over the next few months before doing all your yammering – I personally liked listening to B98.5 this past Monday and Tuesday – I notice a different venu of music – interesting… Producer Will is doing his job until there are changes. I keep 98.5 on in my business all day long – it’s a station I want my customers to hear in the background. Are S&V and K&A the only DJ’s that have ever been let go? Life goes on people – Do you think if YOU lost your job – say at Sony – that none of us would EVER buy a Sony product again – DOUBTFUL… You will not have S&V and K&A in your thoughts 2 weeks from now. I’m sure they all appreciate your support.

You think Kelly Clarkson was played too much? How about Daughtry? While I like him, I was sick of hearing his songs. The music needs to be stepped up a notch. And none of the things that Steve and Vicki chatted about was funny any more. I loved the Steve & Vicki show! Sad to hear that they are off the air! I prefer ‘talk radio’ in the morning versus music. I have not lived here long enough to know about the previous show, but I definately do not like the new morning guy or the music they have been playing over the past few days. So since Steve and Vikki are gone, I will no longer listen to B98.5. I was lost before Steve and Vikki returned to the radio, so now I’m going to be lost again. I don’t like the other morning shows. I am sad to see Steve and Vikki go, they were the only decent am show on in Atlanta. But, honestly Will is my favorite personality on the show, so I hope they keep him on the air. He could be SO awesome with the right partner. B98.5 s problem is their repetetive playlist. Their genre is “soft rock” that gives them about 4 decades or music to pick from and yet they play the same 50 songs over and over. Clarkson, Daughtry and Prince ALL the time. Now they have even included Miley in heavy rotation. The “BIG 80s” weekends sounded like a great thing until the second week when I figured out they are playing the same songs OVER and OVER. I don’t get it. I have always turned the station at 9am because Jordyn Gray gets on my nerves and Kelly McCoy later in the day is TERRIBLE. They have some serious revamping to do if they are going to keep listeners.

Steve and Vikki were the only reason I listened to B98.5 and have already moved to 106.7 with Randy and Spiff. I really hate the way that radio stations just drop someone or a format without any warning to listeners. I guess there is no reason to feel a loyalty to a station if they don’t have any loyalty to the fans. Do what you want, 98.5, I have already moved on. I will no longer be listening to B98.5 since they let Steve and Vikki go. They were the ONLY reason I listened to Steve and Vikki. I really enjoyed Steve and Vikki and thought they were a good fit for 98.5. I am disappointed that the station let them go with no explanation to the listeners. This seems a very unfair way to treat employees and fans. I will not be tuning in again because you play the same songs over and over again. As an early 30-something, 98.5 was not exactly my favorite station. However, I tolerated it because I was such a loyal fan of Steve & Vikki on Star 94. However, I have no reason to listen to it anymore, and I really miss them if they don’t pop up on another Atlanta station. I understand why they may have been a better fit for a crowd my age and older, and therefore on the “least controversial, suitable for offices everywhere” light rock station. But I guess this isn’t the first time a radio station didn’t consider its listeners when making these decisions. Thank goodness for ipods and podcasts!

I liked Steve and Vickie, I’m sad Cox has ended their show. Steve & Vickie never offended me, and they were easy to listen to in the morning, never abrasive or loud. Corny as it was, I liked The Uninvited Guest, to not know how it ends is a bit of a letdown. Well, it;s about time they got it (management) that New Home of the Steve and Vicki show got so tirrrrrrrring. Vicki I could do without, that screeching and shrill laugh got on my nerves first thing in the morning. Steve on the other hand was great and enjoyed his voice and comments. Will is borrrring and tiring. I think splitting up this duo would be best and bring Steve back I think he could shine without Vicki and Will. Keep Will in the background where he needs to be. I do agree McKee was a show that kept you informed made you feel good and you got to laugh while you were in traffic and on your way to work.

The music is the most important and I love 80s weekend, but all radio stations play the same songs over and over and over!!! There is so much out there to be played! The radio business is brutal. Our society is so cruel….lighten up people…if you do not like the music and people turn the radio off. Maybe it’s just me but I personally wouldn’t malign anyone who has done as much as Steve and Vikii have for Children’s hospital, and other charities around the Atlanta area. The fact that the most venemous comments are coming from the people who want Kelly and Alpha to come back, gives me a clue as to what type of show they must have. I do remember coming across Kelly and Alpha one time while surfing the radio channels and almost fell asleep before I could get the channel changed. How boring a team they are. I guess it takes an individual with a sense of humor to appreciate Steve and Vikii’s show. I’m probably not going to listen to b98.5 anymore, because the only reason I did listen in the first place was because of them. The stations music selection leaves much to be desired and Will is not worth listening to on his own.

I was totally disgusted when B98.5 removed Kelly & Alpha just shy of their ten year service to them. I was a previous fan of Steve & Vicki on Star 94.1, but felt B98.5 played more the music I wanted to hear and liked Kelly & Alpha and after some months of listening to DaveFM and River, went back to B98.5. I think B98.5 is not the personalites – its the lack of understanding that people that have to sit in traffic like mix…we are a mixed culture in Atlanta – why are we playing the same things over and over and we want some talk/personality but not talk to carry the entire show….the execs have failed in finding the correct combination of contests, music, news/traffic and you can blame the personalities all you want…but that doesnt make it so..there are other ways to cut a budget than people that are known and cared about – LIKE YOURS FOR INSTANCE.

Ir there a remote chance of getting “Sounds of Faith” added on Sunday mornings? The greatest of all programs on 94.9 was awakening on Sunday morning to Alan Kunke’s smooth mellow voice and hearing the many, many, many spiritual selections that made my heart soar. B98.5 made a big mistake by letting Steve go. I like Vikki, but Will is not a good partner for her. I agree the music needed some help too. I only listened to the morning show, so now, I won’t be listening at all! I hope they can find another home in Atlanta, if not, I guess I’ll join the others with the iPod and taking CD’s to work to listen to. All other stations are for the tiny boppers, country (ugh) or rap crap(yuck!). Maybe B98.5 will find a whole new crowd. Just play music for babies.

They try to keep the show moving with Cousin Will, which is boring, too. Steve added a little pizazz to the show, offering an intelligent, warm, twist to the entertainment. He and Vicki play off of each other very well…at least enough to keep the show fresh and interesting. He adds a personality to the show. Without Steve, you might as well just play music with a few less than exciting comments added to the music variety. I REALLY miss Steve. The show lays flat without him. I love the personalities of Vicki and Will, but they are dull without the comic relief of Steve who is the brunt of their jokes and quips. PLEASE bring Steve back!!! I have spoken to many of my “older” yet “hip” (smile) friends who totally agree. This takes me back to when Randy and Spiff were suddenly thrown off of the air without any explanation to their audience about what happened. Now, I am gladly going back to Randy and Spiff for my morning commute (we old ones DO still go to work at 6:00 in the morning). I would still like to stay attached to modern music, without going completely to the “oldies”. But, you have forced me to choose another route.

Fondly,
An old listener

What a big mistake. Steve is great. Vicki is horrible. and Will good lord beat a dying horse over and over again. who gives a rat’s tail about his cousin. Just play decent music. and that other team kelly alpha, they are as bad and stupid as randy and spiff. thank god for CD’s. Bring back Gary McKee, JJ Jackson and the music the baby boomers love to hear. Not all of this crap now.

Never liked the “new” 98.5 Steve and Vikki but after Kelly and Alpha just didn’t find anything else good for early mornings at 6 a.m. Recently found 104.7 and it is fun, clean and the host are full of positive energy. It might not be for everyone but works for me. I might go back if Kelly and Alpha can be as good as they used to be. I’m probalby an old timer but still work 5 days a week and need a morning that is informative, cheerful and decent music ( please no CAR WASH )

Bring back Kelly & Alpha….I got so tired of hearing about the “new” Steve and Vikki show….it was bad enough when it was Steve and Vikki…now that it’s just Vikki (and Producer Will), it’s a total bore. And I don’t listen for the music in the morning….I want traffic, news, and weather most of all.

I used to listen to 94.9 as Peach and Lite FM. Clear Channel lost a loyal listener when 94.9 changed over to country music in December, 2006. I went back to listening to B 98.5 FM… they began airing the syndicated Delilah show at night. Steve and Vikki would end their 17-year run at Star 94 in late 2007, and move over to B 98 in July, 2008. B 98 has been such a breath of fresh air since mid-2008.

Wish Clear Channel would consider overhauling 1 of their existing Atlanta stations… maybe bringing back the WPCH-FM calls, Peach branding, and AC music format. Probably too far fetched.

Furthermore, B 98.5 FM may be getting about ready to lose me too.

I could picture Clear Channel bringing back the Peach branding, WPCH calls, and AC format to its former 94.9 dial position. Maybe Steve and Vikki getting a new morning show… and Delilah’s show returning to her Peach/Lite FM roots. Just a thought.

I totally agree about Will being a part of the problem and the music! Steve and Vikki definitely not the problem. They are awesome and I will not listen to 98.5 now. I left STAR 94 when they did and now I will leave 98.5 too! They are funny, entertaining and clean! They needed Tom as their sidekick as they had him at Star 94. The 3 of them were a good match. Had me laughing every morning on my way to work. Will, not to funny. Boring is the word. THIS SUX BAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had listen to Steve and Vickie since the 70’s at various radio stations. I always enjoyed them. I always enjoyed B98.5 also. But when they came to B98.5 it was like they were trying to stay in the young crowd. Talking about gays, sex and other things so freely, that I know they never talked about before. I know Steve has kids and wondered what they thought about their Dad talking like that. I lost respect for both of them because I like B98.5 for it’s conservative format.
